"authentic lightsaber fighting"? I've never seen Master Yoda fight like this. Nor Obi-wan. Come to think of it, no Jedi or Sith has ever fought like this. Lightsabers are not like Rapiers. You can fence with them if you wish, but the power and elegance of a light saber comes from its ability to protect its user via deflection.
PeteZombie you're right. rapiers are very heavy. and they are primarily used for thrusting. that's why our sabers are built to be as light as possible, and we never thrust.
I mean actually, if you think logically about lightsabres, you wouldn't throw big cuts. If they were real, rapier-like fencing would be prominent. It's incredibly lightweight meaning holding it out is much easier than a rapier and big cutting motions aren't required because if you thrust, miss by an inch, and just flick your wrist a little, you might cut off a limb. You don't need power so cutting as if you do doesn't make much sense
In a real sword fight you want to conserve as much energy as possible and be as efficient as possible. The more moves you use, the more likely you are of making a mistake.
Huh, this seems interesting. Are single-bladed sabers and one-handed styles the only way these go? I’d love to see someone use the saber staff or reverse grip.
We allow dual-wield in sparring, not yet in competition. Two-handed exists, just not as common as single-grip. Saber staff is too unsafe for this format.
While interesting, I don't think many of these fighting styles would be effective if more feints, flourishes, and "trick shots" that I see regularly employed in the full contact medieval LARP I participate in were able to be used. Also, I see a considerable lack of defense and effective parrying.

Going to have to echo the other comments here, this is essentially fencing with lightsabers. If anything, more rapier than foil. There’s little to no “actual” lightsaber combat, that being the eight forms or the styles created by Nick Gallard. I mean, it’s cool, and cheaper than buying a steel blade...but it’s nowhere near actual, realistic lightsaber combat.
Realistic lightsaber combat is very fencing-like. If you understand the 7 forms, then you know that Form II Makashi is the superior form for one-on-one lightsaber-to-lightsaber combat, and Form II is based on western fencing. Any of the 7 forms can be expressed in our system. But we are a competitive organization, as well as a martial arts organization. When the focus is what wins and what keeps you alive, the best methods start to emerge.
Okay, I can run with that. But what do your instructors actually TEACH? Are there references to actual rapier/fencing masters, like Agrippa, Fabris or Grassi? Is there actual instruction on how to control your opponents’ sword, line of direction and footwork? Cuts/slashes/thrusts? I say all this because all I seem to see in your videos is a lot of random poking and slashing with questionable footwork and timing, like two kids who picked up some Hasbro sabers at a toy store and started to fight with them. Also, how is this a martial art...? How can you compare this to other (let’s be honest, real and actually practical) forms of combat? Random pokes in a straight line in a tennis court with a polycarbonate blade doesn’t scream ‘martial art’ to me.
@@MyFriendOfMisery13 As it is an emerging sport and a hypothetical weapon, what ends up being successful will inform what is taught. We refer to historical knowledge when it is applicable, we abandon it when it is not. It is martial arts adjacent because we treat the weapon like it is as deadly as it would realistically be. We are very proud and humbled by our beginners, who had the guts to step into a burgeoning sport with no pedigree or history and to try to explore and master it.
Lightspeed Saber League hmm. Fair enough. Thank you for engaging me in this little debate, it was intelligent and enlightening. I studied a lot of Italian and French rapier play, which is why I was initially critical. But after exploring your channel more and seeing what you teach, it’s actually well put together and it does indeed look like a lot of fun. I wish there was one closer to me, I’d honestly love to give it a try.
If you guys are trying to make this like an actual lightsaber fight, i would ditch the fencing techniques. the foot maneuvers are just like fencing and the they use the light sabers as if they were fencing. The body movements are also like fencing, keeping the distance so that they can hit you but you have just enough reach to hit the. The body swings around to much. Still looks fun, but it's far too much like fencing.
@@micahdiebold6433 Depending on how you see it, "Star Wars-based fighting" is just movie fighting. We're about using the techniques that make sense for a real lightsaber if we could really make and fight with them. Many of those techniques are entirely unique to lightsaber. And yes, many are taken from the real world.
@@micahdiebold6433 Our ruleset is wholly unique and designed from the ground up to reflect the reality of combat with a burning hot column of plasma that can cut through anything, including itself. The rules have little in common with traditional fencing.
Look. This is just fencing with style. If there were lightsaber battles as there are in the movies then it would require a knowledge of martial arts, but some people lack the skill, so they do the next best thing. Makes you wonder why in the living understanding of all that is Holy, they don't just use wooden swords instead; If all they want to do, is just see who is better at whacking the piñata. 😂😂😂
I like that your fighting is not choreographed. So that's a plus. I am glad to see that you guys use safety gear. when swinging at full speed. serious injuries suck. my question though is this. why use a lightsaber that flexes so much when the source material and the basis for your sport does not. If it is a move to keep cost down so that more people can participate than be honest about it. But c'mon man don't pull the "this is the most realistic thing out there" defense. It's just not. Even the crap wal-mart toys have less flex. That said I like the idea of your sport. I do see that there are some attempts made to utilize the weapons that you have to their best advantage. but with blades that flexible why wouldn't you thrust with them? A semi ridged chest plate, or even just a bit of padding would soften the blow of a thrust and give you even more realisticality. and one more attack to deal with. "Will they thrust or won't they?" Just something to think about.
Hi Mark thanks for your questions. You mentioned a few things so I'll respond in sections. 1. We don't say it's "realistic." We say it's "authentic"-- as in, authentic to the "spirit" of the lightsaber as presented on-screen: fast, bold, beautiful. We value realism, but not above safety, fun, or gameplay. 2. Our blade more accurately simulates the true weight of a light-based sword than any other blade available, and is much, much safer. If it flexes a little so be it. 3. We don't allow thrusting for many reasons: safety, elevated equipment costs... but mostly gameplay. Allowing thrusts makes it realistic, but it slows down and shrinks the game considerably, and looks nothing at all like lightsabers on screen. This is not intuitive but it's true: the more realistic you make it, the less authentic it becomes.
Lightspeed Saber League That is exactly the response I would expect from you people. Star Wars duels are not fencing with lightsabers, they are dramatic and gritty. Look up some fan-made videos on UA-cam (I'm sure you've heard of that website). I'll look up some videos for you and send them your way.

@@MyFriendOfMisery13 Thanks for being curious! Please keep an eye out. We'll be releasing a technical manual soon.
why are they acting like lightsaber fighting is fencing
It is fencing.
This is just fencing without safety suit...
Please tell me this kind of moovement isnt a rule
Not what I was expecting
You guys are literally fencing, why dont you just fence
If you guys are trying to make this like an actual lightsaber fight, i would ditch the fencing techniques. the foot maneuvers are just like fencing and the they use the light sabers as if they were fencing. The body movements are also like fencing, keeping the distance so that they can hit you but you have just enough reach to hit the. The body swings around to much. Still looks fun, but it's far too much like fencing.
Our competitors use the techniques that work, for a light-based sword as if it was actually real. You can't get more "actual" than that!
@@LightspeedSaberLeagueYT So you are not going for Star Wars based fighting? only using their weapons but other techniques?
@@micahdiebold6433 Depending on how you see it, "Star Wars-based fighting" is just movie fighting. We're about using the techniques that make sense for a real lightsaber if we could really make and fight with them. Many of those techniques are entirely unique to lightsaber. And yes, many are taken from the real world.
@@LightspeedSaberLeagueYT Okay so it's just fencing with "Ligh-based swords" with minor rule changes.
@@micahdiebold6433 Our ruleset is wholly unique and designed from the ground up to reflect the reality of combat with a burning hot column of plasma that can cut through anything, including itself. The rules have little in common with traditional fencing.
There little to no technique in these. Wildly swings hits others hands. Wooow👏
The hands are the fastest, most nimble target in Lightspeed Saber, assuming a competent competitor.
Why are you wearing fencing gear its a perfect opportunity to wear star wars gear fitted for fencing.
Great idea. Where can we get some?
Fencing isnt meant the force
neat
This isnt fencing. Just so you guys know.
Zhamzhas Yhubleyhoreh it's lightspeed-saber fencing!
Lightspeed Saber League i would say, considering i fence myself. Not lightspeed though. Normal fencing
You should try it!
Lightspeed Saber League how? I could smack a tree with my saber and post it on my channel.
The lightsabers Are so floppy
Why use only one hand
Because it's effective!
With a laser weapon. U just close ur eyes and wave it like a maniac. No skills required.
You can try it I guess
I came looking for cool realistic lightsaber battles, not dorks wildly swinging hunks of overpriced plastic at each other.
These dudes... are just playing amateur fencing
They are indeed amateurs and we are very proud of them for the hard work theyve put into sonething that's never been done before.
Lol, thats just fencing
this is just beginner fencing...
This is not intuitive but it's true: the more realistic you make it, the less authentic it becomes.
ok fair enough.
I'd beat them all with real kigumdo skills
Go do Dag, it’s actual fighting
Too many rules.
i could clap any of these bots
XD
What is this 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
stop making up words
All words are made up
liam.monarov like what? I’m
This doesn’t look fun.
This is pathetic, its just fencing with a Star Wars skin. GET INTO IT OR GO HOME!!!
Leaf White get into what?
Lightspeed Saber League That is exactly the response I would expect from you people. Star Wars duels are not fencing with lightsabers, they are dramatic and gritty. Look up some fan-made videos on UA-cam (I'm sure you've heard of that website). I'll look up some videos for you and send them your way.
Leaf White cool thanks can't wait to see your skills!
leafwhite ,you weirdo ..i wonder how you can acomplish choreography in a fight like that.
this is so boring
