      You should be fine as long as you interact with it in the right way. A bird has a very good memory and will definitely remember someone that's nice to them, even if your interactions with it are a week apart.

      +Maya Claunch it certainly helps for you to do as much research about budgies and their care as you possibly can. If your parents understand that you know what you are getting into and that you are prepared, it might give them a reason to consider a budgie for you! Good luck :-).

      I know i am late, but it u still need info then here it is, my bird does that too but I know now that u just need to talk to your bird like read a book or something it is probably scared of ur hand so when u are reading the book or just talking put your hand on the bottom of the cage and do this about twice a day for 30min and if your bird becomes aggressive then put it's cage in a room that there is a lot of talking and action going around, don't let anybody else put their hand in the cage but you because it needs to be used to u before it gets overwhelms bye people it does not know. Hopefully this helped😃

    Thanks for these tips! I actually got to tame my birdie Nimbus after a month or so ^-^ It's been about 3 months since I got him, and I thought he might feel happier with another bird around him. So today, I got a new bird! He's in a separate cage right now, and I'm not sure how to go through with the taming process with this. Should I introduce them both first and have them together, then tame my second bird along the way? Or should I tame my second bird first and then have them together later?

    • @ParrotPerch
      @ParrotPerch  9 років тому +1

      sharon90 It worked well for me to introduce the birds first and then work with the second bird. Since my first bird (Siri) was already tame and trusted me, it made working with the second bird (Soma) a little easier. Soma would kind of follow what Siri was doing, so if, for instance, Siri ate from my hand, Soma would just follow along!

    Like your vids. Had several keets handled the same and each have their own personality! One died one day for no obvious reason. Another got the "slime" but recovered after $100 at the vet and "drops" (new ones are $23). My last one "Bob" - My beautiful powder blue lovey-dove - started laying eggs after about 2 years. ha! She would help me eat my breakfast (loved cheerios) - and dinners - broc and peas - even mashed potatoes! Finally she was even forming recognizable words.. One day spring cleaning (about 4 years) I took her cage up to my workshop to avoid any fumes. Up the steps and in the doorway I tripped.. the cage slipped.. and out went my baby. She never looked back even once. Swore - "never again".. until my two grand daughters twisted my leg a couple months ago. Say hello to "Gary & Ms Puff"! More interested in playing than socializing with us but after just a month starting to "dive-bomb" us on the couch and room to room, out in the kitchen - "looking for my wife and I". Both will come for "millet" now out of our hand on the cage or windo sill. It is their "kryptonite"! Hint: plaster joint paper roll is cheap and handy to line those window blinds! Replace with clean every few days and keep after them with a cleaning cloth. You'll quickly see their favorite hang-outs and easily make proper provisions. Put paper down with bits of scotch tape and replace as needed. NEVER just leave these gorgeous creatures "caged-up" or clip their wings! They LOVE to be free! Just be careful around any hidden "dangers"! (hot stove tops etc) If they won't leave a new room they just discovered.. take the cage there with the door open and periodically check back.. they WILL get hungry and thirsty and WILL eventually "go home". They love to fly and "feel free" - but they do love their cage even more! Above all - you must have the patience of the "Pope" sometimes! Never yell at them or lose your temper - just let them in the cage that day. It only takes a minute to undo a year's worth of training!

    I've gotten through the week, but I'm finding it very difficult to do things that require me to open his cage like replacing the food or water or his seed stick without scaring the living daylights out of him or rattling the cage more than I meant to (I just replaced his litter and he got really startled, stayed puffed out for almost half an hour). If I can't get past the initial shock of "hey, Sasquatch here is gonna have to put his giant meathooks in my space every day, this is normal," how am I ever going to get him used to me enough to handle him?

    Hi sophie. How long should u leave your parakeets to get used to their new home and environment? Thanks.

    • @ParrotPerch
      @ParrotPerch  10 років тому

      Summer Alam Hi Summer! It really depends on the individual bird. Sometimes, a few days are adequate, and other times it can take several weeks for the bird(s) to get truly comfortable. If you have them in a good environment (i.e. one where there aren't too many startling noises, intrusive pets, etc.) it shouldn't take very long!

    • @ParrotPerch
      @ParrotPerch  8 років тому

      +Devontae Clarke Keep trying. Sometimes you just have to find a specific type that they like and present it the way they want. Kale is a favorite of both my budgies and tiel, so you might try giving a few big damp leaves of that!

    When my parakeets trys to bite me I get scared what should i do and how do I get him not to bit when I try to get him to step up on my finger

    • @ParrotPerch
      @ParrotPerch  9 років тому

      The key is to make it a positive experience for your bird when it is asked to step up. I would hand feed him for some time, until he is really comfortable with you, and then work on teaching the step up. Incorporate millet into the training, so he gets a reward for stepping up. If he's comfortable with you and understands what you are asking him to do, then there should not be a large chance that he'll bite. However, do understand that sometimes, even with our best efforts, birds will still bite. Luckily, parakeets have small beaks compared to some of the larger parrots, so a bite is oftentimes not very severe. Just keep things positive and work on building a relationship with your bird. Also, don't force your bird to do something it is not comfortable doing. It is best to give them a choice and reward them when they make the choice we want them to make. Hope this helps!

    +The Parakeet Perch pls help is good to train a budgie in outside of house?

    • @ParrotPerch
      @ParrotPerch  8 років тому

      +eugene menza Typically, until you have at least taught step up, it's good to train budgies inside of their cage. Once you can get them to perch on your hand (which helps with returning them to the cage), then you can teach some behaviors outside of the cage in a secure room. Unless you are training outside free flight, which is risky. Anything ouside should be done while the bird is wearing a flight harness.

    • @ParrotPerch
      @ParrotPerch  10 років тому

      gorkem bolat I am not that familiar with Lories, but a lot of the same principles that apply to Budgies should apply to them (when it comes to training). Have you watched my taming video? That might help you. The key is patience and finding something the bird loves and motivating it with that (without ever being forceful). There is a video here on UA-cam (Lorikeet Tricks) that shows a clicker trained Lorie, so they seem to do well with that type of training. I do have a clicker training video that could help you get started with that. You can use the clicker to train your bird to come to you initially and then even work in some tricks later on. Enjoy your bird...Lorikeets are some of the pretties parrots out there I think!

      Albert Mejia No, it does take them some time to get used to their surroundings! Just keep things calm and let your birdie acclimate and he/she will probably be munching on food soon. You can always give it a sprig of millet to encourage it.

    Does it matter if your parakeet is male or female or how long you have had them? I have had a single female budgie for about a year or so and i have been desperately trying to tame her but she does not trust me. Sorry if this is a dumb question just need some insight!

    • @ParrotPerch
      @ParrotPerch  8 років тому

      +Jordan Gerling Since budgies have such varied personalities, I don't want to pinpoint certain behaviors to males/females (outside of males tending to talk more). I have a very high strung female that is not as trusting and then a very laid back female who is very trusting, and my male is more like the latter. The most important thing is to be patient and go through the taming process step by step. See my hand taming video, as it may help! Hand feed a lot and spend time with you budgie, even if it's just to talk to her.

      @ParrotPerch  10 років тому

      Vety De paz Thanks for the comment and very good question. You can actually use this to your advantage if you get at least one of the birds to trust you. Budgies can have very different personalities, so if you have one or more that are a little more confident, I would work on getting that bird (or those birds) interested in hand feeding over time (try giving them millet, as most parakeets love it). Then, hopefully, the other birds will become more friendly as well. The key is to be very patient and work gently, so you aren't frightening to the birds.

    Hi Sophie,
    I have a budgie who is around 6 months old I've been trying to get her to trust me for a while now, I've beem putting bird seeds of my hand to try and get her to eat off it but it hasn't been working, do you know. Why? I keep my hand completely still.
    Please help! Thanks

    • @ParrotPerch
      @ParrotPerch  10 років тому

      april sawan It might be good for you to just get your bird used to your hand first, in case it is still wary of you. Also, when are you trying to feed? Birds can have a tendency to eat during certain parts of the day, and they also have rest periods where they would rather nap or just perch somewhere. Try feeding your bird when it is hungriest (morning and evening for mine). Lastly, if you can get some millet, that might be more tempting for you bird than regular seed. Good luck!

    How long for a cockatiels comfort?

    • @ParrotPerch
      @ParrotPerch  10 років тому

      It really can vary depending on a lot of factors. For instance, my cockatiel was hand fed and I got it as a baby, so it came to me tame. If your bird is older, has had minimal interaction with people, etc., it can take some time to get it used to handling. Cockatiels are usually pretty interested in being with people and getting attention, so hopefully it won't take you too long to form a bond!

    Hi I want to ask a question. So I have this parakeet and ive gotten as far as she walks upon my finger but whenever I try to pet her she pecks me and squaks can anyone tell me why she's doing that?

    • @ParrotPerch
      @ParrotPerch  6 років тому

      It sounds like your bird is not fond of getting petted (many budgies have an aversion to that and there are a lot of factors that play into how easily a bird can be handled). It is sometimes easier to get birds to enjoy petting when they are relaxed. You might try petting in the cage at first when your bird is resting. Midday is often a good time. Also, keep interactions very positive, so that your bird thinks of your presence as a good thing!

    I got my first ever budgerigar today(Monday 25th july 2022)
    From breeder to home. It's a male, and frightened..but i thought about something i read online before getting a budgie which was...to just sit close to the cage and just talk to it.(make sure it has water n seeds too)
    It was looking straight at me the whole 15 minutes and i noticed it's heart beat was low(normal/not panicking)
    I was running out of things to say so just rambled anything i could think of.
    The good thing that has come out of it so far is that i was being social to it(havent officially given it a name yet)
    I'm going to do it again tomorrow.(longer social time frame)
    Oh...and i did put my hand in for the perch imitation of the finger(for 2-3minutes) but didn't work... still in progress.

      Thank you very much! I am very grateful for your comments. I will get a video up for you on how to get your birds interested. Until then, I would encourage you to show some interest in the toys (using your hand to play with them). If your Budgies are hand tame, they will probably show interest in what you are playing with and want to interact with it as well.

    Had one over a year and it wouldn't "come around". Then it got sick and I tool it to our vet ($100). Gave drops that I had to just grab her to administer. She got better and finally got over her craziness. Eventually she was on my shoulder and climbing all over me every time I let her out. Loved to help me eat breakfast and dinner - mashed potatoes peas broccoli celery carrots - you name it. Spring cleaning one spring I was taking her cage to the garage workshop upstairs and stumbled. The cage hit and bottom popped off - away she went!

    Can you help me? I seemed to have got a some-what aggressive budgie, Sky. When ever I millet to my other bird, (to try to get them out of the cage). Sky tries to snap at him, making him go somewhere else in the cage. Then, when I try to get she/he (It's gender is unknown) to step up, Sky just scurries away. Iv'e seen Sky step up and go very close to cage door before, but ever since I got her wings clipped she stopped stepping up.
    Also, Sky gets very scared of things, more than other birds I'm pretty sure. I recently got them a natural wood playground, to maybe help them get out of the cage. I tried to introduce my budgies to it, first by slowly putting the ladder in their cage. Sky started to freak out and fly everywhere in the cage, making my other bird freak out as well. Sky even freaks out with things she/he has seen before, like bird toys.

    Hi I just got my parakeets yesterday and they are really scared to me...I bought two parakeets, I guess they are both female. The green one named tinkerbell are SO SCARED TO ME and everytime i put my hand inside te cage, she's flying, climbing on the metal walls just to avoid me. I try to give some snacks to her but she ignored it and fly and she makes noise...what should i do? i was so bummed that i bought a budgie that don't like me..i knew it takes a lot of time but i feel hopeless.
    The blue one, who is angel are pretty kind to me and she let me touch her for while.
    Sometimes, she stand on finger but she fly again...I saw them eat they spray millet but i try to gave them fruits but they ignored it...i know that when you got your budgie's trust, you'll be able to take them out of the cage, let them eat fruits,play with them and teach them tricks.
    I was a little bit sad..😭😳
    I hope someday they will know me better and don't be afraid to me..i hope they trust me better. I knew it will just take a time...I do love pets...☺

    I got my budgiie about 9 days now. He's a tamed bird when I got him and sometimes he would perch or eat from my finger but the trust is still not there as sometimes he would runaway from my hand. He doesn't chirp a lot and he could perch still for long time, though he would play with his toy in his cage.. he likes his swing toy with bells very much, often found him perch in the round swing with bells. He would chirp along when I turn on the youtube of budgie chirping, like some of video, your budgie chirped, he would chirp, too. Do you think bird doesn't chirp much is unhappy or stressful?

    My husband and I just recieved the blue budgergar parakeet as a 2yr anniversary gift from one of my friends who I grew up with most of my life and still keep in touch with. The purpose is to help deecrease my level of anxiety and dpression; because the landlord said I'm no longer allowed to feed the wild birds on my balcony. It came home with us on the 14th of June, and still acts like it is scared of us. Why is this? It is also still too young to know it's sex....so we don't know it's exact age. Talk to them everytime you feed them say hey buddy or good morning, evening, night. Randomly check on them. When you refill their water/food do so slowly and gently do it in front of them I show them love I pour them cold spring water from a water bottle in front of them I talk to them at the same time. Their smart their animals but not just animals their aware of everything I do. I try to give them my hand slowly and if their pupils get wide or they resist then I understand I back up and give them space its not a huge difference than with dogs I can gain any dogs trust its all about moving slowly gently and not to much eye contact with dogs though once a dog touches my hand with its nose or vice verse then I've made a friend its just a slower process with birds and you can't be afraid to be bitten that's another way to gain animals trust Anyways im sipping tea and chattery 😊
