    If poetry exists in drumming, this man is the Bard. The Pineapple Thief was already a great band. Gavin has taken them to master status.

    I never noticed how he adjusts his hi hat clutch mid playing to get different sounds for different parts of the song. He does it at 1:25 and again at 2:06. Incredible precision!

      I noticed that too! Unreal

      While I wouldn’t put it past him, it’s possible that the equipment is just messing up and he’s fixing it mid song. The change doesn’t seem to make a difference musically

    • @pablosiller804
      @pablosiller804 11 місяців тому +10

      I think he does it to play the double bass without the hihat getting too noisy from being wide open. The first time he just loose the clutch and de second time he adjust the hight again

    • @MikeKobb
      @MikeKobb 4 місяці тому +1

      Well spotted. In other videos that I guess are maybe more recent, I've noticed that he has a trick clutch mechanism that seems to let him leave it in a loose configuration while he's using the double bass pedals, and then it re-latches when he steps on the hi-hat pedal again.

    Can we all just take a second to appreciate that the middle section goes from 7/4 to 6/4 to 5/4 to 4/4 into the outro, yet Gavin smooths it all out and makes it flow.

      He uses cut down snare wires on his snare to get a beefier shell tone instead of the wirey tone most snares get. I think he cuts down to 8 or 12 wires instead of the usual 20

      In all seriousness, I LOVE Gavin Harrison’s drumming, but in my book, no one can touch Benny when it comes to grooving. Prime example of ghost notes with his fingers? Check out his performance of September at the MEINL Festival (2010 I think, but don’t quote me on that)

    Just so graceful like a ballerina, it just looks so effortless never once does it look like he’s bashing away, but yet it’s just so musical every measure he’s the softest hitting drummer I’ve ever seen yet I’ve never heard so much music come from one man’s drum set

    Mr Harrison, in my view is some that defines ' professional'. By that, I mean he is in such control of his craft, that you never get to see him on the outer edge of his playing, or when he goes all out. There are, I think , little hints of that in this clip, because he seems to be playing with more of an edge in this than I usually see him. To me , he's the natural progression from Bill Bruford, both in technique and in temprament behind the kit. A Gavin Harrison who 'lets the clutch out' would be a sight to behold...

    I enjoyed the construction of the different drum parts, the explosiveness of the song. But most of all what I gain or moresoeven learned from watching this is how he kept good solid time....That is sooo important to me...I comb through hours of footage of different drummers of all styles, and that's what I hear them stress:Keeping time and laying that groove as Mr. Gavin Harrison did. Again, Thanks Vic Firth for the awesome in all areas of drumming and percussion because it keeps me tuned and motivated.✌☞♪♬

      I saw him playing 8 or 9 RUSH songs a few months back, eh, and... I'm not sure if I can still call Neil Peart The Professor, you know? He made tunes like Limelight and Subdivisions even better... fewer beats here and there (amazing fillings) and no need for all that fancy stuff (over-drumming)... something Neil always kept in 'cause sometimes, more is less.
