The most amazing aspect of Gavin's playing is not his technique or his excellent timing, but his ability to understand what rhythmic design should be played for the benefit of the song. That's called maturity and leaving your ego at the door to understand that the overall sound is more important than scoring points for amateur's critique on UA-cam.

Thats what we call "playing in the pocket" as drummers. Probably the most underrated but most important aspect of drumming in my eyes. Play what the Song needs, dont overplay, dont underplay. It's the understanding of musical harmonics and ryhtmic elevation of the Song. Kinda like "play to assist the other musicians in the song, dont try to dominate them"

Perfectly explained, just watched the ending of Finally Free very drum ending with Maningi on Live in London DVD, that what Mr. Mangisi has missing or lacking whatever you call.. You should feel the essence & soul and be part of with the music not push it to far or if you still want to do, please do it on the right approach like Portnoy or Gavin does

I agree, but what impresses me most about Mr. Harrison is the sound. His entire set sounds fantastic, but the toms are something really special. Btw, being moderate is something I've noticed that most young drummers have trouble achieving... especially when they get to a certain level and when their technique progresses and very few of them deal with the sound of the drums. They all play the same things and there isn’t some great originality here. Take, for example, Virgil Donati - a flawless drummer, perfect technique and limb independence, but where is the music? On the other hand, there's Nate Smith - groove, groove and just groove, without unnecessary showing off. Technique is essential, but it is a tool that allows us to express ourselves more easily and to get less tired while doing it.

I love music so much but regretfully I've only ever seen one band and that's because they just so happened to play locally to me. I'm going to see VOLA in London later this year, and looking at seeing Steve Hackett as well - and that's only possible because the man is somehow still killing it 50 years later. I can't miss an opportunity to experience it, it's a shame there's nothing upcoming for PT

One of my favorite things about Gavin is he lays back on the beat, in such an incredible way, you anticipate and anticipate and then he drops it perfectly, the cup chimes really demonstrate this ability to nail the accents in such a manner that elevates the entire feel of the song. Another aspect is his kick drumming, he will pick up the notes in perfect spots and lay them in a way you're not expecting, I simply love his drumming and he is a huge inspiration to me, this band is amazing but when you pick Gavin Harrison, your inviting all the drummers of the world to enjoy your music so obviously there is a lot of drummers commenting on Gavin and not the band, we all love the band too, but Gavin is what we are here for lol

Practice, practice and practice some more. There's a good livestream of him discussing that he would practice for many hours a day for years. The more practice and fluidity, technique, you have the easier it is to play to the music when it becomes an extension of yourself rather than a forcing of your body to try and keep to the music. Let it flow out of your soul, the more fluid you become the easier it is to do just that!

I don't even know that I can single individual songs out from 'Your Wilderness' personally... the whole album is so good from start to finish! Definitely one of my favorite albums, that's for sure. I love that it isn't a very long album either, by today's standards. It may not be 80 minutes long, but every moment is filled with musical creativity and beauty, and it makes its point without excess. I remember when I first got the album and listened to 'In Exile.' I had a big smile on my face that didn't leave for the duration of the whole album. 😀

I was introduced to The Pineapple Thief via Gavin, having heard him previously with Porcupine Tree. What I love about TPT is that Bruce's songwriting is deeper, less dark and subtler than Steven Wilson's. And he's a better vocalist. Gavin's role is different too - more restrained, more focused on backing the music. Excellent stuff.
Saw them live in 2019 in Montreal. Hope to see them again in the future.

An amazing live version of an amazing and moving song. Your Wilderness is one of my favourite albums of all time and that's why I'm so glad I bought Where We Stood a few months ago.
To me the only "fault" in this version is that Darren didn't nail the solo as it appears in the studio... But it's a little price to pay!
And Mr. Harrison... What can I say? Easily the most influential musician in my style of playing drums!

What a great and flawless live performance. The song is such a nicely woven interplay of each musician's intricate start and stop placements, with Bruce and Jon doubling registers, and... wow. The dynamics in TPT have always just been incredible. I'm Gob smacked. Having moved on to listening to newer stuff from TPT, then hearing this YW song live brought back memories of cruising in my car in that summer. Hoping for some Canadian Dates for the next TPT tour, it was great meeting Gavin at his clinic here in Winnipeg back in the PT days.

I really love this direction they took away from the rock sound. It really works for them and their musical ideas. They use simplicity to create what these songs become, which are layered and really just genius compositions.

i think Gavin is the perfect example of that talent is not only some skill you were born with.
it takes so much time and dedication and maturing to become this complete.
talent is mostly the love for your craft and the will to focus for hours and hours on your weaknesses, if you asked me...
    but i can only imagine.😅
