Every time I watch your food shopping videos I realize how much more food costs in the states. Even when you’ve done organic food shops, it’s been vastly cheaper there than it is here. It seems like we pay twice as much over here. Though it also varies state to state.

For example, you were standing near those vegan meat alternatives and the shelf tag read £1.25. That’s $1.47 in US currency. A product like that in the US would likely run between $3.00 to $8.00 depending where you live and shop.

    • @MsIdgie1

Here’s an idea for paying for the essentials such as oil. When your shopping comes under the amount you budgeted, you save the remainder, which in your shopping today was 35p, and use it when you’ve accumulated enough to purchase the essentials.

Can you even get out of the store without spending $100 now? It’s ridiculous how much profit they are making and then say they are freezing prices for our benefit. They freeze their supplier max prices around this time every year apparently. Aren’t we thankful to pay $10 for a block of butter?

I really enjoy shopping for 2-3 weeks at a time. Its a bit crazy in the amount because of our size family but we have a stocked home. We have learned what lasts and what needs to be used up. Please do share the recipes and all. I am curious about snacks and all the little bits. This would be nice to see a 4-6 week trail of this. Nearest shops for me are Lidl and Tesco. If you are on the budget, Lidl have a veg and fruit box 'reduced but still fresh' for £1.50. You can find different fruits and vegetables in really good condition, if you won't use everything you can freeze them. The staff usually put them by the cashier early in the morning. I recently got two in different times, and was really happy with them.

This is really great, some great advice! I have a tip though, as a baker I can tell you that buying the cheapest carb options (pasta, bread, noodles, etc) they have used the worst quality flour to make those products, hence why they can sell them so cheaply. It's a far greater option to buy a bag of decent quality flour (maybe £2-£3, not wholegrain unless you know what you're doing with it) that will last a couple of weeks and can be used to make these things in batches. ALDI and Lidl notoriously use low quality ingredients for anything that isn't fresh produce, so I try to make it myself whenever I can!

I get most of my food via Olio and Too Good to Go (also Lidl £1.50 boxes sometimes and there is a surplus supermarket near me in Notts so I'm very lucky!) and it's not only really reduced my food bill, it's also a really good way to shop ethically and rescue produce that would otherwise gp to waste. (I'm also vegan like you by the way!) I don't know if Olio and TGTG are big near where you are (sadly it can sometimes be a bit of a lottery to get good produce) but might be worth a try!

I’m in the US and often during the pandemic the vegan sections were constantly out of or low on foods that use to be consistently stocked (meat and dairy alternatives).
It started to get better during end of 2O21 but once inflation hit, “supply chain” news stories etc it rapidly dropped back down. Now being almost out of everything vegan has become a new normal. Shopping has turned into a “let’s see what they have” adventure farther then choosing/ deciding which vegan brand you like best.

Really like the video and glad you commented that Aldi don’t sell loose vegetables and everything is in plastic 😊

My Aldi doesn’t have those things either, once had lentils and quinoa but not usually, and tofu is a must in our house too! I always make bread with plain flour, but we have a bread machine so don’t know if that makes a difference. It might not make Paul Hollywood happy, but it’s delish and my kids are happy to eat it 😊 Ah fun.

My Aldi in the US has tofu, its $1.74 a block. It also sells vegan cheese for $3.50 a bag The only flour they sell is bleached, I prefer unbleached but I buy it at Adli if I don't want to go to another store.

In my country. both Lidl and Aldi (which is called Hofer here) sell tofu. And Lidl also has seitan. Aldi's one is a local product, though.

So many people saying Aldi have never sold tofu but i’ve 100% bought it from there before, it was in January so i think that’s the only time they do it, my aldi still does lentils… maybe it depends where you are or what stock they had??
Love these videos I watch the old ones all the time! ❤

Wow, your ALDIs are so much bigger than the ones in the states! All the ones I've been to on this side of the pond are half the size and a lot less options. I've never seen any kind of flour besides AP and definitely not fresh herbs!

I can only wish that our prices in America was low as your prices there! Absolutely loving this video haul for your groceries and we have an Aldi, I have one a few blocks from my house, but the prices aren’t nowhere near that low lol thank you so much for doing these types of videos. They really do help. I have a prepper pantry downstairs, so I’m pulling off my shelves to help lower my grocery bill here in America. Can’t wait to move back to Europe in the future. 5:19

Some large supermarkets recycle soft plastics like the packaging for the veg/crisps/bread. It tells you on the packet if you can, my local tesco has a massive bin for it at the entrance of the store. Obviously best to avoid it but if it isn't possible it is an option.

Nice video. It will be nice to see what recipes are you making with those ingredients. Lately I don’t feel very inspired to cook. Do you guys eat any other fruit apart of the bananas?

    Hey there Madeleine,
Great to see budget shopping-although is that enough for two adults for a week?
Food is a lot more expensive here in Australia, it seems!😞
Looking forward to seeing how you use the budget shop along with the recipes in next video, thanks!
    Kindly,
    Sharlot.🌻🌱🧚

Joining everyone else in the comment section because HOLY CRAP how cheap food is over there! Although the money spent is different over in my neck of the woods, I’m still happy to watch these since similar items are cheapest anyway. So I’m glad to get inspiration for recipes 😊

This was great, lovely healthy variety of food and many good staple items as well.
I noticed someone else mention it below but here in South Australia we do have tofu along with a small selection of dried red split lentils, dried soup mix peas etc at our Aldi's , so am grateful for that. The blocks of tofu are the firm kind for around $3 for a decent sized block and always cook up well.
I don't think you needed to worry about not having enough protein for the week either with all the different tinned beans that you got, and actually even the potatoes contain protein as well, so you should have been covered fine for that. You do definitely have a much better selection of meat free products at the Aldi's you have over there in the UK though compared to the minimal amount we have to choose from in Australia!
One thing I wanted to add is over on Frugal Fit Mom's channel who is in the US, she has a very well known basic recipe for artisan bread which is a very simple and easy to make no knead bread, and this actually only requires 4 ingredients but is made just with plain flour which makes it very affordable as you don't need the more expensive bread flour to make it, so that's a really handy recipe to have up your sleeve! I know Alex is extremely skilled at making bread but thought this information might be useful for someone else who wants a super easy and simple fool proof way to make it with just plain flour.
Very much looking forward to your further videos to see what meals you make, you're always very inspirational! Thanks :)
