      One reason why Dark Dawn felt so slow story wise (and why there was way too much talking) is because they spent a lot of time setting up the changes to the world. The fourth game could have benefited from the solid groundwork and would have validated Dark Dawn in retrospect. The whole situation also wouldn't be this bad if they hadn't decided on ending the game on a ridiculously huge cliffhanger.

      Not gonna lie, nothing makes me more angry then finishing a story driven game (Which I still really enjoyed playing despite its flaws, and have replayed it a couple of times since) only for the game to give you a cliffhanger that undermines the story of the game you just played and then not even give you the sequel that would complete the story.

    I love golden Sun. I grew up playing it on my brothers Advance and bought it myself as soon as I had the money. I still play it today. But I was disapointed with the DS game. the first two had a very clear main quet. And I loved the plottwist that you had to do the exact oposite in the second game. But Dark Dawn wasn't so clear. you get what you wanted in the first place quite early in the gameand the rest just felt like a side quest. The puzzles were too easy and explained in cutscenes. And even the hardest puzzle of the entire game was solved quite easily if you used the mirror.
    Sometimes I felt like some Psynergy was just there to use one time and you even had to get one character to your party just so you could use the third eye three times.
    And I didn't liked all the 'machines' - that there weren't any spirits and it was all technology. In the lost age was only one machine; the great gogomba. And even he had a spirit inside.
    But for me the worst part was the ending. We got home and bam! Vortex and end credits. It just felt too open. Golden Sun had a open ending too, but it was a satisfying ending. We had a ship and set sail. But in Dark Dawn it didn't seem like an end. Just the beginning of another sidequest and I was very confused when it suddenly ended.

      Under that logic, the lighthouses as "just machines" too, since they have no spirits and broadcast Elemental Psynergy across Weyard.
      Plus... I dunno about you, but stopping the world from being beset by monsters that attack cities and kill thousands of people seems a touch more important than just finding a Roc's Feather to repair a glider.

      When I was growing up I had no access to an NES, so if there hadn't been a remake of Legend of Zelda for GBA I would have never had a chance to actually experience an incredibly important and influential game from before my time. It seems only right that we do everything we can to preserve these pieces of culture for future generations, and ports/remakes/remasters help with that.

    My problem with Dark Dawn was that the story was kinda boring compared to the conflicting two first games. Also, Dark Dawn just felt like a fan fiction game while the first two felt like an epic journey. having the sons look EXACTLY like their parents didn't help either. Where was the originality? Plus, the game was waaaay too easy.

    #Sunrise for sure. No JRPG has done more for me than Golden Sun, and that's not just nostalgia talking.
    While I feel Dark Dawn was not true to its originals in storytelling, it did do quite well in terms of puzzlesolving, battles and challenge. I do not agree that Dark Dawn was less challenging that the other games ( Unless you're counting TLA's Dullahan fight. Nightmare fuel. x_x ) The first two Golden Sun games may just seem more challenging because most of us were much younger when we experienced those battles and puzzles.
    I definitely remember being completely unable to defeat Saturos and Menardi for a long, long time. And then having my heart drop when they became a God-damned dragon and were so large they had to zoom out the battle camera.
    But playing Dark Dawn and the original Golden Sun/TLA side to side, Dark Dawn seems to be about the same challenge level over all. In fact, some of the puzzles were even more complex.
    I feel like Camelot just lacked fanservice in their new game, to be blunt. It felt as though they were trying to sell Golden Sun to a new demographic, not appeal to their fans, and that resulted in some bad review. Most of the characters we grew up loving never made an appearance. In fact they were barely even mentioned. Half of Weyard was not available to explore.
    In fact almost nothing from the original Golden Sun was around in Dark Dawn. How much more amazing would it have been to a fan to meet more of the original cast. Go to Lemuria, or Prox. Meet descendants, or just older versions of previous characters. See some more of our character ships confirmed.
    Instead they opted to ignore much of the "Old World" and instead try to create a new one, and frankly, a less interesting one. Camelot could do much better in a new game if they actually tried to make a TRUE SEQUEL to The Lost Age, rather than what almost feels like a spinoff.

      I'm not a GS fan, but there are two things I agree with:
      1.- The puzzles: In the original, most of them were nothing but "move and push". In The Lost Age, they tried to do something different, but they also brought a LOT of useless psynergy.
      2.- The world and characters: For example, I was recently wondering if Passaj is, actually, Altin. If so, how can they remember their glorious ancient past, from THOUSANDS of years ago, yet not mentioning those stone statues that flooded their town, just a THIRD of century ago?

    The original Golden Sun did NOT have points of no return in the way that Dark Dawn did. Here and there, there were rooms or areas you couldn't go back to later (most notably sol sanctum), but for the most part, the entire game world stayed available through the ending. Hi, I'm a Fire Emblem fan, and this is a little PSA for the Golden Sun community:
    Long thought to be a dead series, Fire Emblem finally got its revival back in 2012 with FE Awakening. Now, _while I can agree_ with certain hang-ups with the series these days (like _waifus_ and _bad writing_ ), I feel that too many have let this overshadow what the series has managed to improve upon greatly (*cough* the combat system circa FE Conquest is amazing *cough*).
    And if there's anything I've learned about Nintendo, it's that _Nintendo is a timid creature, and it scares easily_ . Nothing sends Nintendo packing like a combo of poorly selling games and bad game rep, which I feel Fire Emblem might find itself in again, in the near future. And there won't be third chances.
    So, Golden Sun fans, a word of caution: *if* and *when* GS4 _finally_ comes out in 2018, enjoy it. And appreciate it.
    Because, like Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn was for quite some time, it may very well be the last entry of the series you hold so very dear.

      Beautiful comment. Thanks so much for watching. Glad to have a viewer that loves both Fire Emblem and Golden Sun! Those are the exact reasons I was worried about Fire Emblem Echoes and wanted to make that first video about it, and it's exactly why I'm glad Dark Dawn exists at all!

      Ehh... FE is different though. There's been at least 1 FE every 3 years. It's also a longer series than GS.

      I'm with Rinku San.
      While it's cute that you shared your thoughts. I'm also an FE fan. And it is indeed a different story between the two franchises. Fire Emblem is not a free roam Rpg with big damage numbers. Golden Sun's story is deep and even to its lore. Fire Emblem has not as complex writing and details when compared to GS. FE Fates, even a newer game, could not carry Fire Emblem with such heavy writing. Weapons, Gear, Map, Attack Animations, Summons. There's a lot more work compared to.
      Cheers tho.

      FE always had waifus, just like how Golden Sun has always been mediocre.

    • @Demial_Sparda
      @Demial_Sparda 7 років тому

      Agree.
      I did play golden sun 1, and like it. But I didnt like Golden Sun 2 sadly, cuz they change main character. I just couldnt bring myself up to play as main heroine's brother.
      I did like GGDD its was fun to play. And emojis option is very funny aswell :D
      What about FE. I cant call myself as fan of FE series. But, I really did play almost in every FE game. And FE:A was my favorite game.
      And you know what? Try to gyess what's was my favorite game before playing FEA? Ye, Genealogy of holy war. And try to guess, why? Cuz you could marry off characters.
      And when I learn that FEA will have Avatar unit and you could marry him some for some anime waifus, I was desperate to play.
      Though, I like idea making Avatar duetagonist. But when they promote Avatar from duetag to protag in Fates, I was kind of disappointed.
      So, why FEA best for me?
      First Avatar system.
      Second Wafus.
      And third is Dual Audio (I cant play game if there is no japanese voice overs)
      Sadly, Echoes lacks every concept that I mentioned. I'm gonna miss this game.
      I maybe gonna sound like a jerk right now, but, I really hope for Ehoes to fail in sales, and maybe they will return to those concepts again.
      ps. sry for bad grammar.

    Thank you for this video, nothing that I didn't already know but it was nice to see all the points again back to back.
    Golden Sun is my favourite game series ever, my UA-cam channel currently is dedicated to it as well so it goes without saying that I want a 4th game in the series. I agree that Dark Dawn did many things wrong but it did so many things right!
    The existence of beastmen and civilizations that we didn't visit in TLA are hinted to exist in TLA's script as well, so it can be somehow justified with in game dialogue.
    As for the sales, yeah DD did pretty mediocre compared to the gba games but is it really hopeless? Correct me if I am wrong but didn't Intelligent Systems aimed for a 600k sale goal to consider Fire Emblem Awakening successful? And their team is much bigger, so why is 780k for Dark Dawn considered so bad?
    I feel like the reason Camelot is hesitant to make a 4th game are not DD's sales, but the fear of doing even less, that's why they asked for fan support and demand, so they can be sure a 4th game will sell enough.
    It is clear that Golden Sun as an IP (unfortunately) decreases in fame, so a 4th game would be quite risky for a company to do.
    But if done good (like Awakening for example) the series will see a 5th game for sure (a man can dream XD)!

    • @Wolfram47
      @Wolfram47 7 років тому +2

      Hmmm couldn't they do a kickstarter? This would both serve as an indicator of popularity and demand, as well as financing it; thus allowing them to make the game without as many qualms or worries of bad sales, as their bases are covered already. Just a thought.
      Btw I enjoyed every aspect of GS1+2's graphics, art direction, combat, psynergy, puzzles and the music was iconic (fav being Venus lighthouse) so for the meantime, release it on the Switch's VC Nintendo!

    • @valiant7251
      @valiant7251 7 років тому

      IIRC the minimum goal for fire emblem not to be completely burried was only 250k.
      I didn't like DD that much compared to the others, but I still think it was worth. I'd definitely buy a fourth golden sun. But as time goes on I'm surely getting more skeptical about both the chances of seeing a fourth installement and about the potential sales it would make ...

    but if Nintendo Smash Bros just gave Issac or Matthew and character slot, the franchise can be saved look at Awakening they got a 50% sale boost after Lucina+Robin being revealed. (also like to mention project X Zone 2 featured chrom and Lucina) Imagine what happened of a GS character had a slot also if GS get another VC port on the switch maybe it can help show that "hey they are still alive somewhere"
    or maybe a big crossover feature GS can spark interest even for newcomers

      Lol sorry about that, from what I had seen around online most people felt they weren't as good as Saturos and Menardi. I totally agree though, I really think it was a mistake not having Isaac in the newest smash game. He's not even an assist trophy anymore.. come on. He should have been in there. I definitely think you're right, we may have seen a Golden Sun 4 had he held such a role in SSB4, because as we've seen with Fire Emblem, being featured like that does wonders... so unfortunate. And what's funny enough is that everything that was mentioned as a problem in Dark Dawn, my nephew and I have been saying that all the time. In fact, even though we loved the reintroduction into the series, my nephew and I both agree that the game felt "lazy", from the soundtracks, to the pacing of the battle and in a game that's meant to be open world, why even have points of no return anymore, especially these days. Everytime there is a Nintendo Direct, we eagerly sit waiting and praying for news of another Golden Sun. We cling on to every last strand of hope and faith that one day the Golden Sun will rise again.

    I think the series needs a reboot, it's been several years since the first game, I think it can easily hook the new generation if the game is well developed and fully functional. Like Awakening from Fire Emblem was supposed to be the last FE game, but it brought the series back to life. Echoes was a great reboot but still needed work, overall it was a great refinement, but still needs that good old polish. Just imagine if GS could pull off a fully polished game, it might have the potential to bring life to a great yet dying series.

    Also, there's a reason that the Zelda remakes didn't do well: They were rather pointless. If you look at remakes of older games, it makes sense- technology has changed and allowed them to do things better than they could on the more limited hardware... Granted, technology is still advancing, but... There's really not much that modern games can do that games on the GameCube couldn't. And in the end, the changes ended up being incredibly minor... Even moreso for Twilight Princess.
    A fully reworked remake of Golden Sun and Lost Age for the 3DS as a single title- and a single coherent world- could work wonderfully.
    As for the dialogue, it wasn't he fact that there was more of it that was a problem, it was that the dialogue suffered heavily from Bioware syndrome: The dialogue often did nothing to develop the plot, nothing to develop the characters, and continuously repeated information the players already knew. More dialogue could have worked if there was a point to it, if it felt like we were learning more about the characters or the world around them- but the fact of the matter is, it simply didn't.
    Also, sunrise because the maker of the video specifically asked to be trolled by people repeating one word mindlessly...

    • @lucky_crit
      @lucky_crit  7 років тому +7

      Very good points! I have noticed while going over the dialogue that the complaints people have about them over-explaining simple concepts are DEFINITELY there. But I will say that I also feel Dark Dawn was hoping to appeal to a new generation of players too, so maybe they aimed a little younger. They definitely did a great job explaining all the story beats of the original games within the game's encyclopedia, though. Thanks for checking out the video!

    Oh wow, i randomly teared up when i heard the Golden Sun music. I went through so much emotion as a child when playing it.
    I captured the issues of Dark dawn very well. I'll try to give my 2 cents without too mich spoiler, in case there are still people that plan on palying the dark dawn.
    I give the game, that it started out very strong and promising. The leaving of the hut made sense (thanks Tyrell) albeit it felt lke Garet and Isaac pushed their kids a bit out of the nest. The meeting with Kraden (although i was slightly annoyed that i had to listen to the rambling of that old coot again, the guy talks way too much) revealed new possible story-elements that we have to go behind. A real mistery... to be forgotten throughout the ENTIRE game. Only at the end, it sttopped with a huge cliffhanger that the problem is still there and most likely bigger than before. But it was nowhere apparent in the rest of the game. If the developers would have put some random happenings related to it in the game, maybe have KRaden study it a bit, theorize but ultimatively not quite coming to a close due to having more pressing matters storywhise, i'd have accepted those things.
    I was bothered by the whole bunch of new civilisations as well. You can't just build an entire palace including a maybe 6-7 stories dungeon beneath it within 30 years annd claim that they've been around for forever.
    But to the characters. There was a distinct issue with the importance of certain characters. You had your starting crew, that was pretty much the exact same than your GS-Starting crew, except that Tyrell felt even more stupid than Garet and Karis.. felt like she should have been Jennas daughter and not Ivans? (Srsly, it felt like a more bitchy Jenny recolor) Rief.. existed. That's sadly about it. For the more interesting row.. The new Earth Adept could also have been an Item. Some story to get her and then she was never mentioned again. The newer Wind-Adept was as an idea alreight, maybe a bit ambitioned, but she felt way too op and for no apparent reason too important. Generally was the cast way too underdeveloped in characterisation.
    Generally, the game left a really bad taste in my mouth and i really wish for a rework of it or a redeeming 4th game.

    Am I the only one who found the intro-stage of Dark Dawn to be insufferably boring and infuriatingly offensive? The characters would keep repeating themselves over and over again. My grandmother suffered from Alzheimers and I kid you not, these characters had the same talking patterns as a patient with dementia.
    "Oh hey, so and so flew away with the contraption! He won't be able to control it without knowing wind magic, but he doesn't know wind magic! Without the knowledge of wind magic, he will surely be doomed. After all, he needs to know wind magic to control the contraption! I hope he's okay. He must be over in the wilds. We should look for him! After all, he's going to get himself killed if he doesn't know how to protect himself. If only he knew wind magic, we wouldn't have to worry. But, alas, only those who know wind magic can control the contraption! I'm sure he's in the wilds though so we'll go..." SHUT THE FUCK UP ALREADY!
    I haven't touched the game in so long, I forgot the specifics of the beginning, but it went something like that.

      NoNameC68 This this this Oh My God!! The entire game was linear, but they still held your hand the entire way, with long unskippable cutscenes of the characters trying to decide what path to take, EVEN THOUGH THERE WAS ONLY ONE POSSIBLE PATH. I ragequit the game multiple times because this was so irritating.
      I also personally thought they made the battle system worse, by not allowing you to assign moves to characters that they couldn't currently do, despite the fact that they WOULD be able to do them when their turn came around. So frustrating.
      Sunrise?

    • @Kage57
      @Kage57 6 років тому +5

      The only thing I agree is the part where they make unskippable tutorials. I got GSDD when I was in kindergarten so I actually need it. But I’m in 7th grade now and I still like to replay the game but if only you could skip it. Also they don’t repeat themselves as much as you say they do. Yeah they talk too much but they don’t repeat. They just talk ALOT. Also the camera movements make it longer a bit. imo GSDD was actually a pretty good game. It sucks you didnt complete it. The table turns once the grave eclipse happens. A lot of people die. Briggs, Hou Zan, everyone in Kaocho, everyone in Champa except for Obaba.

    I only recently got into Golden Sun from seeing Issac from Super Smash Flash 2. I liked his design and how he plays(One of my favorite characters in the game), so I decided to see what his games are like. When I saw videos and then emulated Golden Sun(I never got a lot of games for my GBA), I knew I was having fun and I like the story. I'm not done with the first game yet but after doing research, I saw that there was only 3 games and a 4th one wasn't made in a while. That's why i'm here. I didn't even know about this stuff last year but now that I know that I love this game, it's sad that there are not that much games because RPGs are my favorite types of games, and Golden Sun might be one of my favorite ones. #Sunrise

    Camelot needs to release a Golden Sun Trilogy package for the switch, allowing you to carry over your save to the sequel on the same cartridge. Then they need to work on the 4th installment if that one sells well enough. That, or remake the games from the ground up with better mechanics.

    Honestly, some franchises just dont need to become franchises. GS was planned as a singular game. Some games end where they do; dont beg the developers to wring out story where they didnt intend for it to be. Otherwise you get yearly installments where its clear the writers ran out of ideas

  • @wish-pieces
    @wish-pieces 7 років тому +1

    I was a passionate Golden Sun fan in my teen years. I constantly kept up with any info regarding the series even if it was just the Takahashi brothers being asked in an interview about a third game in the series. For several years they said they had ideas but didn't know if it would ever happen, but that if it did they wanted to put in the time and effort to make it perfect for the fans. I remember screaming and crying tears of joy when Dark Dawn was announced during the live E3 conference. I remember pestering my gamestop over and over with calls because they didn't get their shipment of the game until after launch day. I soon got the game and reveled in it. This was what I had been waiting so many long years for. Or so I thought.
    I consider myself a decent writer, at least a good enough one to be able to deconstruct and understand story elements well. And I felt like the characters and story of Dark Dawn were just really mediocre. I wanted to like the characters and writing and lore and everything so bad but things were just so bland. And finally when the story seemed like it was getting interesting, the game ended. Without giving me the one thing that I, as a big fan of the original two games, wanted in the first place out of a sequel--the satisfaction of kicking Alex's ass after he practically became a demigod in GS2. He just strings you along and toys with you with his new lackeys in Dark Dawn and then it ends without any real payoff in that respect. Plus a really cheap, uninspired cliffhanger.
    I remember having hope that we'd get a fourth game and that this was just the prologue to it like GS1 was to GS2. But then I remember that they were pretty much just one game--one script--split in half because of the lack of cartridge space. But this was different. There was soon an interview asking about a potential GS4 and the Takahashi bros were like "I dunno...we'd need a lot of time to think and figure out what happens next..." and this answer alone made me lose all faith. Dark Dawn WASN'T intended to be the prologue for a second game they had in mind. They didn't plan on doing more at all unless the game sold beyond their expectations. And it was kind of inevitable that it wouldn't. If you do a little research, it's also easy to find that Golden Sun is mostly just popular in the west. The sales of the series were never that great in Japan. And Dark Dawn sold abysmally in both regions from what I saw.
    The Takahashi bros paraded around saying they were planning on making GS3 the perfect sequel for years but just gave us something so mediocre and half-assed when it really came down to it. And I don't even know that I want a sequel anymore considering how bad GS3 was in retrospect. I've moved on. And you probably should too if you're still hoping and praying for a fourth game.

    I would say, though, that this is Nintendo we're on about- never put it past them pulling a rabbit out of the hat. Kid Icarus got another game after about 20 years, Nintendo funded Bayonetta 2 when the original wasn't even on a Nintendo system when it came out thus they didn't have any favours, Fire Emblem managed to get over to the west after being out in Japan for 20 years when they figured out that having character in a medieval western setting would actually go down pretty well in the west...
    For better and worse, I'd never underestimate Nintendo when it comes to something like this.

    Great vid, you really explored the differences between the games well.
    For me, the main problem with Dark Dawn was it's railroaded story. In DD, it felt like the progression of the game was very linear, like running don a corridor. In TLA, the world felt huge and dynamic, and the path ahead wasn't always clear. This openness gives a real sense of adventure imo.
    In TLA, the world felt real,and you were thrust in it, whereas in Dark Dawn, the world felt like it was there to suit your story.
    That's my to cents though, the series is still my favourite RPG and I did love Dark Dawn.

      Definitely a very good question. I think it would have been great to see Isaac as a playable character in the new smash bros, and the fact that he wasn't, is saddening. I think if that had happened perhaps more people would want new golden sun games. I definitely agree, Alex is my favorite character which I why I enjoyed one particular plotline of Dark Dawn, but yes, I REALLY want to see where they would have taken him as a character in future sequels (at the very least I know they had more planned out for a GS4 and I really want to know what it was). We won't get a Golden Sun 4. Golden Sun 3 needs to be redone. Don't go to their children. There's still so much in between that needs to be done. Also, why does everyone speak so differently in the new one? The team that put the first two games together needs to be reunited. Part of why Golden Sun 1 & 2 flow so well together is because it was originally meant to be a single game, but the Gameboy Cartridges couln't hold that much data.
