WHAT HAPPENED TO ADVANCE WARS? + Will We See Advance Wars On The Nintendo Switch? (Retrospective)

- Опубліковано 7 лип 2017
- In today's episode we're discussing the Advance Wars series! After a very successful North American run including Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising, Advance Wars Dual Strike, and Advance Wars: Days of Ruin, what happened to the Advance Wars series and will it be possible for us to see another Advance Wars game on the Nintendo Switch? With Intelligent Systems' schedules currently filled working on the upcoming Fire Emblem Main series title for the Switch, it's unlikely we'll see anything soon, but after hearing from the developers it's clear that the series has not left their minds and they'd love to get back to making another Advance Wars game someday.
✨ Thanks for watching, guys! (۶•̀ᴗ•́)۶

Lucky Crit hopefully they return one day especially since golden sun still has much to offer
Yep, these are the big two in my mind that I think Nintendo is dropping the ball on and should bring back!
Lucky Crit all we can do is wait
+Jesse Rangel Yep, unfortunately. I hope on the off chance they are doing market research online and they end up finding videos like this, though!
Jesse Rangel Thanks for the Video! Personally I like Advance Wars a lot more than Fire Emblem. I would like to see a sequel soon.
When I saw the E3 stream, it unlocked a memory that is very faint.
Fire Emblem: _“I thought you were dead!”_
Advance Wars: *“My Death was greatly exaggerated.”*

Yes, yes we will.
Yep and of corse Nintendo made it 60$!!

They’ll likely do the same with a Mother 1+2 collection unless they decide to put them on the NES and SNES services.

Relationships
My tank weifu, she gets me so well because we both love seeing things getting blow up.
Her treads, radar system and canon are so beutiful.
This is just a joke but imagine a tank dating sim lol
I think hitoshi wants a tank dating sim lol
Tbh I really like the story in Advance Wars :(
@@AhnafAbdullah I mean, I liked the characters in Advance Wars, especially Black Hole, but it's kinda silly to think it needs some new angle to give depth to the character relationships. They already had plenty going on between Grit, Nell and Max or Sonja and Kanbei or Sonja and Lash or Colin and Sasha, or Lash and Adder, or...
The character relationships were already fine. They only have to write a good conflict. It's not like Fire Emblem with support dialog or pairings or skinship. And it's kinda weird that what's holding a new game back isn't trying to balance CO powers or come up with new units or fresh gameplay mechanics or a new conflict that isn't just "Black Hole comes back. Because." It's...character relationships? Really?
The hell?!

It is not news anymore.
The major issue with Advance Wars is that Japanese gamers love grinding and games that are styled like JRPGs. Advance Wars doesn't have units for you to get attached to and level up like Fire Emblem does, so Fire Emblem won out. They never even got Days of Ruin in Japan. I think Codename STEAM also could have been a test run for Advance Wars on the 3DS, but Codename STEAM really tanked hard, so that threw any chances of an Advance Wars game out the window. Its a real shame too, cause this was one of the best strategy games I've ever played.
Good deduction, sir
Indeed unfortunately I hate grinding so it would turn me off from it but maybe that's the problem
Days of Ruin kind of had a level up system, but from what I remember it rarely made too much of a difference when I played through. Besides CO Units obviously
I loved Days of Ruin. I'll never understand the japanese crowd, I only started enjoying poring through JRPGs when there was a way to circumvent the grinding with emulation/minor romhacks. I like my laborious pacing but some of us have work in the morning, damn
I wouldn't necessarily say they like grinding. In actuality they tend to hate it. But they love story-heavy games with characters they can relate to and it's kinda hard to relate to a stupid kid who doesn't know what an airport is but is somehow still an officer in the military.
And of course the military theme is a turn-off in Japan
The answer is yes. Yes we will have Advance Wars on Switch.
playing the games on an emulator right now, the games are still friggering better then the crappy mobile games these days:3
same
leo233357 id hope a game for a dedicated gaming system would be better than a mobile game...

Same here. We havent even seen a mobile port of Advance Wars and I know it would be good.

god I remember just leaving my gba on just to listen to Nell's theme song. AW always had great music.
Absolutely agreed. So nostalgic. While making this video there were so many moments where I was like, "This track HAS to be in there. How do I make it work in the video?"
Right? Duel Strike was one of the only games were I actaully used the Sound Room feature just to listen to the rocking themes. Colin's theme for life. Even Grits theme was good.
For me Sensei's theme was the absolute best.
@@Jamick98Geass Man with taste, Colin has my favourite theme too although Nell's is a classic
I spent alot of time just using the music player to listen to Days of Ruins music
So good, kinda sad that it was so crunchy from the DS compression
Amazing video man! I NEEED a new Advance Wars game. I got 823 hours in Dual Strike... xD That game was my childhood 😭😭
Yeah, Advance Wars in general is such a classic childhood GBA series :,)
Ranton I literally love your channel because all the games I loved from my childhood you seemed to love them as well
Me too
Well good news. The franchise is coming back.
Good news!!!
Part of that last clip about the interview just worries me that even the devs of the original games are somewhat out of touch with what the games core appeal was. Don't get me wrong, giving new aspects to the series is why Days of Ruin jumped back sales after Dual Strike. But I'm getting this nagging vibe that people equate Advance Wars as a dumbed down Fire Emblem when it, to anyone who has actually played through some of the games completely, is actually the opposite. These games are about strategy. There is little to no rng in how it plays. You either make smart, effective moves using everything or you fail. It's the ruthless calculus of what a war looks like to a commanding officer rather than what a romanticized heroic interpretation is in Fire Emblem. It's like if you only had green npc units, you had to pay for the expenses to deploy them, and tons of them would inevitably die just to secure more resources to aid the war effort. There is nothing that pisses me off more than the billions of times I have to explain this to someone who is in love with Fire Emblem and sees Advance Wars for the first time brushing it aside as if it is "less challenging".
Yeah it's certainly not less challenging. It's different and in some ways better. Thanks so much for watching!
I agree a 100%. Fire Emblem and Advance Wars might have a lot in common at first glance, but if you play both, you realize they are more different than alike, as you explained. What pisses me off is the devs at Intelligent Systems are holding back because "they don't know how to add a relationship system". I am sorry, but why is that an issue? Why would AW need a relationship system? I am aware that Visual Novels and dating sims are big in Japan, but if they are putting more importance to that particular aspect of FE, why not just cut the fat, remove the tactical gameplay and from then on release only Visual Novels based on FE characters, see how the public likes it...
I know I'm late but thank you for voicing out what I could not
you took all the words right out of my mouth...regarding A.W. vs FIre Waifu er I mean F.E.
You can cheese Fire Emblem like that's the point and you can stall out. If you're not flexible in Advanced Wars that can be the whole mission due to how CO powers work. Which is also why I liked Days of Ruin because it was basically the FE or AW games. It was dark yet it was a great story. Instead of "Oh Black Hole is at it again so we're gonna stop shooting at each other right?"
I'd walk on coals for Switch Wars. Those possibilities...
I was also a HUGE fan of Battalion Wars. The gameplay was excellent, and I absolutely loved the characters, and historical in-jokes. Unfortunately, I have spoken with someone who worked in those games. He gave me a lot f behind the scenes stuff, but confirmed Battalion is definitely dead.
You're under an NDA, aren't you?

I wonder what happened...
Hmm , I wish there was an E3 direct on June 15th 2021 that would bring back Advance Wars 1 and 2 as remakes-
WE GOT IT!
They are bringing it back!!!
Do the Japanese just think we're stupid or something? "Oh, we can't give them the Wars series; they'll never understand it." "Oh, we can't ship the real version of Final Fantasy 4 in the US, they'll never be able to figure it out." Etc, etc.
It's definitely eyebrow-raising when you hear about it. I'm really glad that's a thing of the past!
VonFirflirch you sure we only got mhgen but not xx
+Jordan Green,
It's not a franchise I care about, so I wouldn't know ;)
Although, I'm assuming it's not a case of "people outside of Japan wouldn't be able to handle it", is it? ;)
VonFirflirch they haven't given a reason
well back when SNES was released to NA Parents were complaining that they couldnt just put SNES games into the NES and accused Nintendo of ripping them off. So yes, I could see why. Also NA is highly Christian and the Christians gave flak about Pokemon being Satanic. We really do look like backwards cave people to the Japanese.
Am i the only one here that actually Adore 'Days of Ruin' 's mechanic more than 'Dual Strike' because 'Dual Strike' tends to break the game a lot while 'Days of Ruin' actually maintain it's strategic unit element stronger rather than relying on CO's power
Yeah though I haven't played Dual Strike extensively from what I've seen I think it was the most unbalanced game in the series as far as COs and powers went. Days of Ruin is much more balanced.
Lucky Crit plus fog of war is finally fair
The problem with the CO power is that when you add "another lvl" of it the "first lvl" pretty much dies out. I truly tried to adjust my strategy in AW2 and Dual Strike to ONLY rely on tier1 and one-player-power accordingly. But there is no way to dominate the battlefield with it!
- So IMO leave only ONE CO power, at most add some powerups when you progress through the campaign.
- better have less units but which are more suited for certain situations, rather than having a ton but a lot of obsolete ones
- next AW NEEDS to be tested very intensively before release! If not it might end up in some game breaking mechanics
I think all of that above makes the devs crack their heads about how to make yet another great AW game
I personally prefered black hole rising the most. 'Dual Strike' indeed tends to break the game, two turns AND both super CO powers AND a potential further power boost of up to 30% depending on who you matched together. it was just insane. I liked the switching CO's during combat mechanic and the campaign having battles on both screen at once though.
In days or Ruin I hardly even cared about which CO I got, because it'd hardly change my style of play at all. In the original two games, playing max vs grit felt like a world of difference. I can't even remember what any the days of ruin CO's did despite it being the last game to come out and having completed the game. I have not had that problem with the other games.
I enjoyed all four games though.
I didn't like Dual Strike because the mechanic felt cheap to use when you got Sami and Eagle and it made turns feel longer than they needed to be, especially on the opponents side. Also, Mega Tanks were busted and had limited counters to them which made them feel like you should be getting them as soon as possible (Much like how busted GDI Mammoth Tanks were.)
Days of Ruin brought AW back to its simplistic rock-paper-scissors with its units along with special effects that units could do like rigs and air craft carriers. It offered so much and giving us the ability to design a ton of maps compared to its predecessors made it fun to map create and save some of the good maps you made. Days of Ruin, I argue, is the best in the series (Even better than the original in my opinion.)

Boy do i feel bad for the folks waiting on that game
Check out Dreams on PS4
Who else really loved Battalion Wars 2? I think that game had so many cool unit designs that really shined and made the online modes especially fun to play. Shelling an enemy's control point with a sea-based Dreadnought was so, so awesome.
R.I.P. Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection :(
If the Switch has Virtual Console, they better put Advance Wars on there!!
Yes indeed!

I JUST WANT DoR online back!
going back to older titles makes em feel bland gameplay wise.
well exept super famicom wars.
Yeah seeing the DS online functionality gone is heartbreaking. It should honestly work on 3DS's.

Anddd still nothing
The real question is why did Days of Ruin never even release in Japan? Japan never saw the game until 2013 and it was only released as a Club Nintendo reward.
If it hadn't gotten a botched release in Japan, it'd probably still be around today.
The series in general was selling poorly in Japan. Days of Ruin was developed specifically for the US market only as a result.
@@VestedUTuber
The series dropped HARSHLY in Japan after AW1 got delayed to all hells after 9/11, not coming out untill a AW1+2 pack.
@@thebravegallade731
I doubt it would have sold well even if it wasn't delayed. Japan is generally not into modern military styled media of any kind.
Japan just doesn't care about that series, just like Metroid. Advance Wars and Metroid are two of my favorite Nintendo franchises ever but lack of interest in Japan is bogging the franchises down. I'm gonna try and give Fire Emblem another shot but the first few times I played Fire Emblem games I just couldn't get into them nearly as much as the Advance Wars games. I love being able to spend money to make my own units just like I would in a Command & Conquer game, but the fact that it's turn based makes it all the better.
@@williamkoscielniak820 Post E3 2021: Guess what 2 series just got new games on the switch?
I'm still so mad there hasn't been an Advance Wars game for a while. But they keep milking out Waifu Emblem...
One of my favorite series. It would look phenomenal on the Switch. I guess WarGroove will have to do.
Get ready for Advanced Waifus! Coming soon to a Switch near you!
I hate WarGroove art style but I really want to play a new advance war, what to do ..
FE is the best
Oh, why? I love the art style, but I'd rather love a 20th-century military setting like AW has.
Hard to put it into words. There's just something off-putting about it. Feels like it has no soul at all.
Oh my god I was literally just having a conversation with a coworker about Advance Wars and Golden Sun and why they have stopped making them. There googled Advance Wars and saw these two vids. You are a GD psychic!!!
I knew there were many fans out there hiding in the woodwork wondering, so I really wanted to make these videos :)
I loved days of ruin's new approach. It was fresh to see some changes from cartoony to more serious. And that soundtrack! Oh man...
Aged like fine wine
Guys we gotta make war groove successful maybe that will help further development or interest for a new advance wars games
+ImmaLittlePip Yeah honestly if they see that do well and are actually paying attention perhaps they would think to make another
I told the Wargroove developers that those who fail to learn to history are doomed to repeat it. They didn't want to listen.
ImmaLittlePip Tiny Metal will do that job. It is Advanve Wars with different name...same concept...same gameplay...same in everything....
Master Knight DH - So wise... 😒
@@haimerejzapalnam9191 That's Nintendo's fault if thy don't want to make advanced wars again someone should make a new one.
Advance Wars is so good
GIVE US ANOTHER, NINTENDO
It needs representation in Super Smash Bros. in the form of a playable fighter.
@@treseancann1261
Unfortunately that would be very hard to pull off, because "we can't figure out how to make this character work since they don't actually do anything on their own in their respective game". Despite the fact that they literally did just that all the way back in the late 90s with Captain Falcon...
Just add Sami, she's quite the soldier.
Only if they pay to SystemSoft Alpha.
Tresean Cann it has an assist trophy in brawl
DoR was my favorite of the series, I played the GBA games first, but I loved the change in tone and the new character designs and gameplay that DoR had. Pretty much everything was improved and a breath of fresh air. Maybe it was just when I played the games as well. I just hit my mid 20s when DoR came out so the darker story was more up my alley.
At long last, the question "Will we see AW on the Switch?" finds its answer!
Advanced wars will always have a special place in my heart. I originally got Advanced wars as a possible on the go Command and Conquer type title.. What I got was something different... something Unexpected... something... Equally as good! I have been a big fan of turn based RPG games ever since Mario RPG, and also been a fan of strategy games due to C&C, and this blended both of these aspects together in a holly marriage of amazingness!
Fantastic Music, Fantastic Sprite art work (some of the best i have seen in a game), Fantastic story lines, Fantastic characters, Fantastic Solid Game play, and just over all Fantastic experience. in my opinion there was not one bad or weak entry in the series, every single one built upon the prior installment, and in all honesty, Not many series can stay fantastic across the board like Advanced Wars did.
Sure, Days of Ruin was far gone and removed from almost everything i had grown to know and love, but regardless, it on it's own accomplished remaining just as Fantastic as it's predecessors, and I can't praise them enough for being able to do that!
They put poison in its mutton.

HAHAHAHAH BUILD AN ARMY TRUST NOBODY SWITCH WARS IS NEVER COMING OUT
everything about Days of Ruin was great.. the balance, CO power mechanics, the unit level ups, the upgraded map maker..

In addition add a “create an army” option.. let us choose/pick what the units look like.
the sprites of the wars series were great
WARS
It's great to see that there are still people that fondly remember the Advance Wars games and dream of a new one being made some day. It would be awesome if you had a few more videos on this series, perhaps something along the lines of "Top X most powerful Dual Strike combinations", "Best & Worst multiplayer maps", "Tips for setting up the most balanced & competitive multiplayer match" [if those kind of videos are your style, that is. Post whatever videos you want lol].
I played Advance Wars Dual Strike so much that I did everything that there is to do in that game; my favorite features were:
- The Hard Campaign which was definitely a step up from the normal one
- The Survival mode where you had to play through a series of challenge maps until you either clear them all or you lose on one of the maps. Some of those later challenges got REALLY difficult from what I recall
- The feature of adding bonuses/skills (or whatever they were called) to COs to give them passive bonuses like stronger units, cheaper units, faster base captures, etc. This is in my opinion a very underrated feature because it allowed you to make the game more difficult for yourself in multiplayer vs. the computer because you could load up the computer with these bonuses, while giving yourself no bonuses at all, and this helped to overcome some of the computer's poor tactical decision making.
Days of Ruin is my favorite though due to what I feel is an overall more balanced gameplay experience. I just wish it was loaded with as much content as Dual Strike. Without a doubt my favorite feature in Days of Ruin is the map editor, which I feel is SO much better than the previous games' map editors. I have spent more time in the map editor on that game than anything else. The fact that you have 50 custom map slots is so awesome, and gives you so much versatility. I used to make my own custom campaigns, featuring original stories for different armies in a sort of fantasy world I made up. The COs could be used as a stand-in to represent certain commanders, or you could just use the generic "no-commander" which worked out just as well. I also made maps that were loosely based on WWII campaigns, such as Normandy, North Africa, Stalingrad, Solomon Islands, Battle of Midway, etc. I never completed my magnum opus though, which was to be a full 50 map custom campaign. I did save some of the map designs in spreadsheets at least though.
I know this is a ridiculously long comment, but I just enjoyed these games so much and the nostalgia is just so awesome. Keep up the great work with your videos.
I still play them to this day, I intentionally bought a tablet to play All Advance Wars games thougn GBA emulator and Drastic Emulator. Grit is my favorite out of them all and his cool theme

@@Waddle_Dee_With_Internet That's my issue too. I downloaded the game but the medieval fantasy setting is a big turnoff. What I loved about Advance Wars was that it took the same type of concepts and weapons of Command And Conquer and made a turn based strategy game out of it.

This is so mad, as an euphoric Advance Wars 2 player (did play against friends either on actual hardware ot on emulator) seeing the FamiconWars Gameplay i said to myself out loud: "I played on this exact map in AdvanceWars2."
I am not sure if i like the DarkerStyle of "Days of Ruin" but the gameplay is good right now. I just miss my Andy, Max and -Tammy- i mean Sami (names different in other languages)
It feels like it has been over two decades that a new game came out and we really are in need of a new one.
This video here? It is a brilliant summary.
Don't forget that it may also fall into the 3ds, depending on if they felt like it or not. The same has to be said for golden sun. #GoldenSunGameNow
That's actually true, though I do expect things to begin to ramp down on the 3DS likely before they're free enough to even begin on another Advance Wars! #Nintendoplease
Lucky Crit
I should make a video about how the switch may and/or may not ramp down the 3ds in the long run.
I miss advance war where there was andy sami and max the original thing i like the campaign when andy first met eagle XD and the hard part where i battle strum i think where i use andy grit and sami at the battle at the same time i still play the advance wars since i liked its story and gameplay :)
Well put together Advance Wars videos like this are always a treat and amazing nostalgia trip. Cheers!
DeeJay, thank you so much! I've been meaning to talk about the state of Reboot camp but haven't had the chance. Moving forward I definitely want to talk about the series again
Thank you for the nostaglia trip and introducing me to Wargroove!!! I'm so hyped for that game now
I would like to see IS create another Warioware title. Its one of there best IP's aside from Fire Emblem. Seriously IS dominated mobile games in the GBA - DS era. Multiple fire emblem, advance wars, and warioware titles, more of which are highly praised.
Between Advance Wars 2 and the first Warioware, I probably ate through like 100 charges of my GBA SP battery. Both those games basically sold me on buying a DS.
The answer is yes it will
I came upon your video by listening to some Advance wars music because I was feeling nostalgic and you made me feel even more so for this series.
I started with Dual Strike and I was simply hooked after the third mission. Discovering new characters, their CO powers, units and villains was just awesome.
Then I went on to play the rest of the series. And if you asked me which one is my favourite I'd say it's DS, followed closely by Days of Ruins (I really liked the change of mood and the OST in that one).
And like you, I would like to see a new game in this series, maybe on the Switch or on the 3DS.
But all we can do for now is hope for a new game and see how Wargroove and Tiny Metal will turn out. I am excited for these two.
Also you just earned a subscriber my good sir. Keep up the good work !
Thank you good sir! Glad you enjoyed this little nostalgia trip. I don't make videos like this one every week, but you can expect some more oldschool stuff every now and again, there's a lot more GBA gems I want to discuss
Sweet. I really love the GBA. It's an amazing console with a lots of great games ! I can't wait to see the next video. Good luck !
Advance Wars has a special place in my heart. Low key passing around a GBA in high school math class playing 2v2 with some buddies :D

(To exited to finish the whole rhyme)
ADVANCE WARS IS BACK BOIS! LETS FUCKEN GO!
You are so awesome for putting this video together for people out there like me who have been literally wondering this very question for years in the exact same format of thought you in the order of questioning you put this video together... for that sir...you have a like and my respect
The comments from the team members of intelli systems gives you some serious ups .. thanks sir
If they do make a new Advance Wars game, a feature i'd like to see in the map editor is:
Available units.
In AW 1 or 2, there is a campaign mission where you are only allowed to build certain units, while the enemy has an MD tank, some other units, and can capture a base. In the editor, I think it would be a good feature if they made it so you could chose what teams can build what units.
Also, it would be cool for COs talking (like in beginning of campaign missions)
It's back! Definitely on the switch now!
Glad to see that it’s on the switch now
Battalion Wars is one of my favorite games of the GameCube and this is my idea of how they could have made a sequel for the WiiU:
-Add new units (like bikes and Anti-Tanks)
-Add a "Retreat" command
-But most importantly: the gameplay. Imagine you have 2 screens like in the WiiU, in the big screen you have the 3rd person perspective, and in the little screen you have the map. Now, in the map screen you can actually command the troops, pretty much like in Advance Wars: you can tell them which unit they should attack, who will attack (let's say: you choose all the bazookas to attack a tank), and also from where (you can command them to go around so they can attack from behind); once you have commanded your troops, you can take control of a unit normally in the big screen (let's say in this case: a tank), and then you can coordinate your attack with the troops you sent earlier! So with this you can mix the 3rd person shooter with a Real Time Strategy mechanics.
-Also, you could unlock special characters: For example, let's say that in a certain mission you get a S rank, then you unlock Andy. Now, you have the option to put Andy as a troop in any coming or previously played mission. You can either play a mission with or without Andy; in case you do choose Andy, a regular infantry unit will be replaced with Andy. Now, Andy as a unit cannot attack, but he can repair your tanks and recons and any other mechanical unit; however, if Andy dies, you fail the mission immediately (so it's a high risk + nice reward situation).
I really hope they bring Advance Wars back, it'd even be perfect for a Mobile game!
This is actually a really well thought out and researched video, thanks for this as I was recently wondering if they were planning on doing something with the series.
You're very welcome! Thank you for checking it out!
Only got to play Days of Ruin and loved it, hope it comes back soon
+Wesley Darnell Yeah, I sure hope so.
We did it, boys.
Also, they could easily do relationships. You can have your main CO give you your powers and boost and still be able to make as many units as you want, but there would be a new twist. Similar to Yggdra Union, you could have each CO attached to a squad, getting there own battle sprite and such. The main CO would gain relationship points with all the units they are able to. The COs out on the field as units could get relationship points by being within a couple spaces of one another. CO units could be handled two ways, either giving them level ups and stats or giving them level ups, but those go towards getting them points to unlock better units or boosts to them for them to use. Like say Andy starts with mechs but as you level up you can give him tanks, rockets, whatever you want and the personal skills of the cos could effect there unit and maybe two spaces away from them. COs would also be deployed like regular squads of units, but would vary in cost depending on what unit they have and what powers are attached to them. They could also add skills to these units like in Fire Emblem. It would be a lot of work and be more complexed then before, but I believe it can work and would be really fun
Great video for the Advance Wars series. Thanks for putting it together.
I don’t think we will get an advanced wars for Nintendo switch we might as well forget about it. We will be lucky if we got advanced wars 1 remaster let alone 2
lmao we never will see that
Sad really hoped we’d eventually get a return to the series. But alas. :(
@@CaptainX2012 well
People whining about DoR gritty art style and difficulty spike were a big turnoff for many longtime fans in my opinion, which I think ultimately lead to a disinterest in the series. I personally want to see a 3DS Advanced Wars before the system burns out. I honestly think a new game in the AW 1&2 series of games would sell like gangbusters, especially now that way more North American, European, and Japanese eyes are on Intelligent Systems due to the 3DS Fire Emblem games and FE:Hero's. Make this happen!! I wanna spend hours fighting wars, customizing maps, and playing singe console multiplayer with friends like I did when I was younger.Forget the next Zelda, Assassins Creed, Elder Scrolls, or Final Fantasy, give me a goofy looking kid duel wielding wrenches!
Yeah, with the success of Fire Emblem and the rise of this genre altogether, I really hope they at least try another entry. I can only imagine how amazing it would be (hell, even as a mobile app) making maps and playing with friends. Forget Super Mario Maker, give us some Advance Wars! Imagine sending map challenges to friends that can download it, boot up the game and give them a whirl! That would be so cool.

Truth be told I think duel strike was the worst of the series and it was broken compared to days of ruin
DoR story was amazing and it's characters were well written plus it didnt focus on super power co spams like duel strike
and if sales are anything to go by I'm sure a lot of people prefer days of ruin to duel strike
though if it returns I hope it returns to advance wars 1 and 2 and dor gameplay and intelligent systems abandons duel strike in both aw games and fire emblem games

Jesus people spell it right
I didn't know advance wars, but I loved battalion wars as a kid!
Great video, you really put some effort and love in this one. I'd so love to see a new Wars game !! :)
Thanks so much! Really glad you enjoyed it. :)
Lin is bae though, and also it was nice that CO powers weren't OP asf and everything seemed balance
+Phoenix Wright Very true! Though I did miss how epic they were previously
advance war reboot coming!!!!
Great video! Advance Wars 2 is one of my all-time favourite games, and I still play it all the time on my GBA to this day. If they released another one I'd buy a Switch in a heartbeat. I tried one of the Fire Emblem games on the 3DS but just couldn't get into it.
Hello, long time fan of Advance Wars here. Thank you for making this retrospective video! Here are a few comment crossing my mind at different times of the video:
5:48 I played Battalion Wars but I could never finish it. The gameplay never clicked with me, and the clunky controls didn't help.
8:10 Days of ruin was a shock when I first played it. The radical change of setting was of-putting at first, but I grew to like it, tough not quite as much as the cartoony aesthetic of the early titles. The gameplay however was top notch, and as you say, the best balance so far in the series.
14:20 I played Fire Emblem Awakening, the relationship system was a nice touch, I think it's an interesting mechanic that made the characters more developed and relatable. However, if the excuse of the devs at Intelligent Systems for not getting on with a new AW title is "We don't know how to put a relationship system in it", I am sorry but this is idiotic. Fire Emblem and Advance Wars are two different franchise with different gameplay. What works in one doesn't necessarily work in the other. What makes them think adding a part of dating sim to AW is a good idea? I know, dating sim are very popular in Japan, but if they lack so much confidence in the established qualities of their franchise as well as presenting a deph hear to all the fan crying in unison for a new title in a franchise they hold dear, then Intelligent System should reflect on themselves, cut the fat and just release Visual Novels, since it's all Japan cares for, isn't int?
I mean, the relationship thing works in Fire Emblem because it's an RPG where you fight with unique characters, but advance wars characters are Generals commanding nameless grunts on the ground to fight war on a grand scale. Are you secretly craving for Tank on APC action, IS?
As an AW player, I like this precise combination of things in my game: A very simple but deep grid based combat system, a multitude of units with their own strength, weakness, that I can produce as many as I want and are EXPENDABLE, a colorful world that makes the action very easy to read and allow you to play war without constantly being reminded of it's horror, and generals with superpowers that turn entire battles around!
would literally be perfect for the switch lite
I come from a near future, there's a hybrid console and the game has a reboot of the first two games
So glad you made an advance wars video, I've only played the first two and would love to play the two for the ds but man i've been wanting a new advance wars game for quite a while and when i found out about wargroove it made me happy
+MRInuzaki Every once in a while I'll continue this series shedding light on older and forgotten series that I think the younger generation (or FE fans) will like. We had so many amazing games for the GBA back then that today's consoles just feel empty without :( anyway thanks so much for watching!
Good job on the video !!!, I personally love the gameplay of the series, but the cute'sy JRPG cartoon part of the game is more something I tolerate, than a feature I love. I still remember how I randomly bought Advanced Wars 2 for GBA on a whim, to play on my handheld during a vacation. I probably only bought it because it was 14$ used at Gamestop and It probably took another decade for me to truly give it the time of day. Once I truly did give it the attention it deserves I was hooked quick and I bought every other game for the GBA & DS within a year. I even play translated ROMS of the original JP released games on my GBC Emulator.
Speaking of Isaac, what ever happened to Golden Sun?
+D Murphy I hope this will shed some light on it for you: ua-cam.com/video/U6I4NBZH4hc/v-deo.html
LIVE AGAIN!
I remember being totally into Advance Wars back in the day, and ended up pursuing my taste for challenge by playing online on the fan site Advance Wars by Web. I learned so much about strategy tactics and balance playing against humans, that it was almost comical to play against the computer again.
One thing that was driven home to me was that the most overpowered unit in the game was the humble Infantry. It's a cheap meatshield with very few units that can actually one-hit-kill it, buying space for your artillery to wreak its vengeance upon your attacker. Not only is it surprisingly tough, but it's sooo cost effective! 5 Infantry can actually take down a tank. It's only weakness is that it can't concentrate fire well, but that's the job of your Artillery.
When Days of Ruin came out, I was psyched but was a bit turned off by the aesthetic change, playing in a world of gray and brown. But the balance was so much better! For one thing, the price of Infantry had been raised to 1500. ;)
This is my favorite game series ever. Without it, I would't I wouldn't love video games
Yes we will!
How convenient that you upload this just when I was gaining interest in the series, thank you

Perfect timing. Thanks for being awesome!
This was a great game, I loved playing both of the first US releases on my GBA. Tbh I still play them on emulators I've downloaded on my phone since actual copies are so hard to find. I had no clue one was available for the DS. I'll be searching for it on Amazon. Awesome video bro!
I didn't play this series back in the day but recently tried out advanced wars 1 on gba, and I was absolutely stunned by how intuitive the design was and how easy it was to pick up especially with the tutorial, this game series is brilliant and it is too bad that we don't have a modern take on the series
I really want a new Advance Wars starring Orange Star.
We never learned about Sturm's fellow aliens or how he managed to recruit human COs. Shame Fire Emblem took all the attention.
I mean, a new Nintendo Wars game would just need Dual Strike's/Black Hole Rising's charm and ease of access with Days of Ruin's mechanics.
Well said bring back the old COs and their powers (but not dual mode shit was busted)
And the current days of ruin units and you would have an amazingly fun and balanced game. (Except anti tank gun needs a nerf to battle copters)
Imagine having Grit as a CO with an anti tank gun sheesh...
@@TalonKarrde03 I loved Dual Strike's crazy bustedness tho. It was so much fun to create combos that could hit triple digit damage.
ZAMNPlayerD dude it was fun just not balanced. (You just saved up to pull off the dual strike). Fun mechanic but I’d only want it to stay in that game. Don’t get me wrong I bought a DS specifically to play dual strike and I think I S ranked every level in campaign and unlocked all characters and alt art skins. Didn’t do the challenges through and I think I played every single battle map and have at least an A rank. I love this series and want more but I did miss the classic CO power swings in days of ruin. I love the actual units in days of ruin felt very balanced. With the anti tank being sole exception
@@TalonKarrde03 That's fair; Von Bolt was lowkey really disappointing. He was Hawke but without any of the badassery that made Hawke cool.
But you got to admit, it would be fun to see Jake and Andy interact.
ZAMNPlayerD no definitely Hawke was probably one of the most interesting characters. Von Bolt was just a really stereotypical big bad evil guy. I loved the new black hole minions but was really sad their designs (except Kindle’s) where just clones of AW2.
I love the game for its strategic side and the COs add so much value. I’d love for them to tweak COs like Javier requiring communication towers but overall I think the next wars game could be the best
Wargroove looks hype and I can't wait until it comes out for the Switch
+Naziro I'll definitely check it out once I get my hands on a Switch. I think I'd enjoy the real thing more, though
It would be so easy for them to make an Advance Wars game for the 3DS. They could reuse Dual Strike's system of having two CO's tagging in and out, and pairing up CO's can earn support points, which could reward the player with support conversations and increased bonuses for using the two CO's together. There, you have your character relationships problem easily solved. And this could work perfectly in either the old classic cartoony setting, the gritty post-apocalyptic setting, or an entirely new one. I feel that if they made a new Advance Wars game, it would be best on the 3DS, but I'd be glad to see the game on the Switch too.
Awesome video. I’ve been a longtime fan of the FE series and have basically been sleeping on the Advance Wars series. I don’t want to admit it, but I only started playing AW on the GBA yesterday, after having seen the DS games and thought that I should start out with the OG first. I’ve gotta say: it’s amazing as hell.
