Is prayer really about changing ourselves or is it just a way to cope with the uncertainty and chaos of life?
Christ commanded us to pray in the bible so I highly doubt it is merely a coping mechanism
It is both. When we submit ourselves before the Almighty, it should be to give thanks and praise. It is also a time when we ask forgiveness and for God to help us become improved and a better version of ourselves, which only he can make manifest, when our hearts are in alignment. Chaos is the opposite of God and his natural order. Back to the days of Enoch, the 7th from Adam, God's order was thrown into chaos. The Watchers descended upon Mt. Hermon and decided they would take wives from the daughters of man. This unnatural union resulted in the nephilim or giants and ultimately the reasons for the cause of God's judgement with the flood. Huge narrative and story that doesn't end until Christs crucifixion and resurrection.

God wants us to communicate with him, we call it prayer
I was in a job that had a very toxic working environment a year ago. l prayed to God and told him how unhappy l was and that l was scared to look for another job because l didn't have the motivation to search for another job. I then asked God what he wanted me to do about my working situation. God took me on a 7 month journey and helped me to find another job in a really healthy working environment. l am so thankful and happy that he lead me from a miserable and toxic job to a job where l am happy and look forward to coming to work.
It stinks when the answer is possibly “no”. My 41 yo wife has cancer and we have 3 kids. I pray for her but it doesn’t seem to matter. I can’t imagine life without her. It terrifies me.
God never ignores your prayers, He always answer it. There are 3 answers : Yes, No, and Be Patient! He has plans for you

I got a job yesterday that is 10K more than my last job and is less stressful. I went for the interview being 3 months out of work due to health issues. The chances of me getting it was slim, next to nothing. I’m under qualified (luckily they offer 8 weeks training) but I was honest and gave my interview absolutely everything. I poured my emotions into my prayer that morning, I left my religion and only came back a week ago. I’m prayed that my nerves settled or that they’d make me stronger. I asked that whatever is planned for me will pay off and that if it is the right path I’ll get it. No word of a lie my subconscious was talking to me and usually that’s just one voice, our own, but I heard another voice at the same time that just said in my heart, “I will deliver.” I felt nothing but a chill through my body and I ended up going to the interview, scoring high in both the assessment we had to have before and smashed the interview. God is good☦️

Sometimes the answer to our prayer is no.
For me, prayer is not about asking. It is about connecting with God. It's about seeking God. He Himself is the greatest pleasure, the highest beauty, the most magnificent wonder. Nothing else can even compare to the surpassing riches of experiencing Him. He Himself is the very greatest of rewards.

Ben's "gumball machine prayers" analogy is spot on for how many people see prayer today. One of the biggest mistakes people make in praying, is that they pray for what they believe they want or need, when in reality it's what God wants or needs for us. God knows us better than we know ourselves. The other thing is, in today's world we expect God to be like this fast food drive-through employee, granting our prayers almost immediately, when in fact it could be weeks, months or even years for prayers to be granted. God works at His pace, which is always perfect and He knows best. You just need to put your trust in God, and let Him do the work.

Ya..people treat God like Santa Claus with a wish list of things. That's not how it works.
I don't think God cares if you ask. He wants you to ask Him. Jesus said to ask and keep on asking. A "gumball machine" has nothing to do with it.
You get to a point where you ask for nothing and not pray at all if you follow these men. If you want to pray all day--God is there to hear you. Jesus said ask and you shall receive, knock and the door will be open unto you. These men here will stop you from praying when they are privileged. Don't stop praying in Jesus's name.

The analogy I use is "cosmic pez dispenser". People seem to mistakenly think that God is a cosmic pez dispenser, waiting to dole out sweets on request. Such a blasphemous thought process.
I've never had a pràyer ignored. I always receive an answer or an end to my crying. You must listen quietly and do not ignore the message. It comes to you in your own voice. But you receive an answer.
This is foolishness so God speaks to you in your voice and not his....give me a break damn liar
This actually comforted me by a ton. I had just started to become Christian again after being non-religious (not atheist because I still believed in a higher power) for most of my life.
So when getting into the habit of praying, I have always been worried whether or not God heard my prayers and thinking about it really hurt me. So watching this gave me a lot of peace and reassurance. Thank you for coming out with this video ❤

I'm glad that watching this video brought you peace and reassurance in your faith. It's understandable to have doubts about whether God hears our prayers, but it's important to remember that God's love and attention is always with us, even if we don't feel it or see it in the moment. And it's great to see that people of different beliefs and backgrounds can come together and find value in Dr. Peterson's teachings.
My brother, keep your eyes on the Truth, which is manifested in Christ. That Truth is that the Love of God was poured upon us through Christ when we did not deserve God's ears but rather God's wrath. Because of the grace we received then, remember at all times to find comfort in the fact that he hears you and cares for everything about you. That is not from me, but from the scriptures in which you can find the promises of God. Read them ceaselessly and know the comfort that awaits you in them :
Isaiah 59:1 Behold, the LORD'S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear:
Matthew 6:6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
I encourage you to read again the Gospels and put before God every concerns including what's about Him directly.

After my girlfriend broke up with me on top of my grandpa having a major surgery, losing my job, and my wallet all within a 2-3 week period, I was torn apart. The only choice I could make was either go to church, or try to deal with it all on my own like that was gonna fix anything. I relented my control over circumstance and went to church genuinely in a place of mental anguish. I said the rosary a few times and I prayed asking God to help me get through this mental trauma or at least allow my eyes to be opened past it so that I don’t fall into the the loathsome pit of depression. After the mass we went to the hospital room where my grandpa was recovering and I was just feeling bad surfing youtube. Suddenly in my mind out of nowhere, like a real eureka moment, I received clarity of mind. I honestly don’t know how or why it happened. It made no sense other than God or the blessed mother heard my prayers and had mercy on my soul, because that feeling was so relieving, the closest I can describe is like being lost in a dark hallway just walking straight for what seems like eternity asking why keep walking, and suddenly you see a door open in your view so bright as you walk out and can see the world again. I’m still not 100% over the breakup, but that’s to be expected. I did receive some grace or peace of the mind much earlier than most people get being that I got it 3 days after. My grandpa is doing great after surgery, he just needs to exercise now. I believe God said to me, look at all these things you’ve achieved on your own and what you’ve done with them without me. How much are you willing to stay alone without me in your life? Clearly nothing here on earth matters without God because he’s the only one that granted me peace mentally when people broke my heart, stole from me, fired me, and disease threatened family.

i was born in a christian family, didn't understand the true meanings of christianity because i was just told to go to church and pray with only one reason (so i don't go to hell)... had a rough childhood and teenage phase, became an atheist, and then an agnostic, but then i felt one day God led me into him one more time through one of Jordan Peterson's video where he opened a whole new perspective of faith. And videos like these are making me understand more and more about God. And i have never felt this thankful all my life to God, to the universe, and to all the people who are striving making this world a better place and have chosen life over death.

You idolize, the universe is nothing, emptiness, cant see or hear you, manifesting in demonic, worship of creation and not the Creator is demonic, angel numbers are demonic, astrology (zodiacs) is demonic, tarot is demonic, prosperity gospel is demonic, fortune telling is demonic, karma is demonic, having more than 1 god is demonic, spells are demonic, crystals are demonic, yin yangs are demonic, yoga is demonic, ouija boards are demonic, mediums are demonic, cults are demonic, lgbt is demonic, psychics are demonic, mantras are demonic, believing that you radiate some sort of positive energy (like an aura) is demonic, believing that you can connect to the universe and that you posses some sort of energies inside of you is demonic
The list goes on but these are the most common practices in new age christianity which violates the teachings of the Bible (Deuteronomy 18:9-14). The fact that you believe the universe can shift things in your favor shows me you do not know the 10 Commandments. Repent and God bless ❤
Im becoming more atheist daily i cant get a brake in life and truly not feeling it, i don’t think I’m even worthy to this so called god haven’t seen any miracles, no wins, no mercy, no meaning, no God spoke to me, nothing I’m losing what little faith i had probably because i was hoping for something out there to save me and like Santa Claus it isn’t real. I don’t know how long i can keep trying to believe i should just give up its never going to happen
Whenever you're depressed, sad or hurt. Just think about how Christ felt when he was walking with his cross with everyone heckling him and cursing his name around him. Think about his passion for us, and see if your problems surpass his
ya so the guy who set himself up to be a spectacle, a poor me type. this is the same guy who is god and knows he will be risen. he has to feel pain for a few hours (yes very awful kind i agree). then he goes to heaven after hanging out for a few days popping into existence to say hi to his friends. its not the worst thing now is it.
@@Spektor211 Exactly. There is no comfort found in someone elses suffering. Jesus' death is a demonstration of God's love towards us, not one of relative suffering. There were and there are also people in this world that suffered more than Jesus. So what?
If I knew I was the son of God, somehow that wouldn't hurt me as much. Plus the fact I KNOW that I will resurrect and it all has a purpose. Most of us are just suffering in such anguish and loneliness and hopelessness because there seems to be no meaning behind it. I can say that I would much rather have gone through what Jesus did several times over than live the life I've had thus far and I make absolutely no exaggeration there.

So, I prayed for my cancer stricken daughter, just 12 yo. She was a beliver, too. I prayed everyday, for hours, for a year and a half. And she died, anyway. So, I guess, the prayer is not an act of asking for something but then... what are the words of a prayers if not asking for things? Whatever the prayer is, it might not work, even in a right cause. A sad thing.
Completely agree. Same for me when my son died. I don't know why God doesn't always answer the prayers of sincere believers but I do know that God is there whether our prayers are answered or not. Doesn't make it any easier to believe in God when our deepest, most earnest prayers seem to fall on deaf ears but God has showed me in other ways He is there and my son is safe and well in His loving arms.

It springs itself on you because it is new and coming from the Holy Spirit. Oftentimes since becoming a Christian I will think and say things that I would have never before. The belief in God and prayer changes souls. For one not to believe is missing out on the very purpose of why humans exist. I pray for lost souls and to find God. I was once that person and can truly testify that it does change you ❤️ We don’t just pray for the chaos/uncertainties in life but also to thank the Lord for all blessings. Life will always throw curve balls at you minor to severe and it’s how we handle it. Give it to the Lord and trust that he will take care of you.
I was all about prayer but after suffering so much I just can't anymore . It's been 3 years( since 2021)and I had to deal with a very strong chronic insomnia. If u haven't felt what being sleep deprived for years is like then it's better not to describe it. I started college in 2022 and it was insanely hard year for me.I don't know what to do now, I've been praying for so long so God can heal my mental health and addictions but i swear it's like talking to a wall. I'm angry and dissapointed with God. I don't know if he hears me or if he's good.
I went through something similar and was discouraged often...but kept relying on God. One day, I could sleep again and the anxiety dissipated. It was an awful time but now it is just a memory. Keep praying and try to be at peace. The Rosary was a great help to me and I couldn't have made it without it. I will pray for you.

The thought occurred to me ………. That common phrase has always made me think deeply about the origin of thoughts I have not previously thought
Jordan Peterson deserves an academy award. Jordan Peterson is not stupid; He knows religion is bs, but he promotes it just to milk the fools.
I think the heart of prayer is asking for oppertunity.
So I ask for strength and God does not give me it then-and-there. He gives me challenges to make me stronger.
Right! This is something I’ve recently started to understand. He gives you trials and tribulations to get you there, while building character.
I remember a Futurama Episode that covered this concept well.
If god does too much, we rely on him for everything. If god does too little, we lose hope.
It requires a light touch and when God is doing things right, people won't be sure God has done anything at all.
It really highlights the difference between treating God like a gumball machine and treating God as an aid to your greater change or literal salvation from your suffering.

From one who knows: Prayer is most often misunderstood to be a way to ask for things. But to ask for things is to demonstrate a lack of faith; "for the Lord knows what you need before you ask." And The Lord's Prayer was improperly translated, because the Aramaic language Jesus spoke had no provision for tense. The Lord's Prayer has been wrongly translated into an ambiguous and future tense prayer of supplication, when it is in fact a PRESENT TENSE prayer of AFFIRMATION.
"Our Father which is in Heaven, hallowed is Your name. Your Kingdom is come, Your will is done, on Earth as it is in Heaven. You give us this day our daily bread and You forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. You lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Great musician, but I'm hesitant to take the advice of someone who OD'd at age 27.
Pray for the conversion and salvation if all living and offer up prayers, works, joys, and sufferings for all the living and dead.
In times like this, faith becomes more and more important.

Almost 9yrs ago my then 19yr old son suffered a severe traumatic brain injury. It's as bad as it gets. He is a quadriplegic and has lost the ability to walk, talk, eat or even move. At the time I was all about prayer but after about two years, I lost the ability to pray. I just can't grasp the purpose of this situation.

I know. I lost my son with cancer. I didn't pray, or couldn't pray. It all seemed so pointless. I was angry with God, what possible purpose could any of it have? God surrounded me with His love, a real physical presence for a few moments only but never to be forgotten. Don't worry about not being able to pray. Jesus prays for us when we can't. Your prayer is the care you give your son. All my love to you. xx

It's essential to do 2 things in prayer:
1: ask for God's will to be done, and the evil one's will to be cancelled in Jesus' name. It's important to ask for things only if it is God's will, otherwise you may enter contracts unknowingly with the evil one.
2. You should practice gratitude, to give thanks and praise for everything you have. Everyday I'm thankful for the roof over my family's head, the food and water on our tables, the beds and safe space for us to sleep in. Gratitude is as important as breathing.
It has been written that our prayers are like the smoke of an incense censor that rises to Him in the throne room. He hears each one. Cherishes each one. One prayer in particular He responded to and He said not until the full number has been reached. Wait a little while longer. This response is similar to other responses He gave in the past as we have heard and some have seen. He always acts in the fullness of His time. Time was created by Him and is His. I always strive to remember these truths as I stroll through life.

For me, prayer is asking for guidance, and meditation is listening for the answer. The answer comes from within, because God is not some being we pray to who libes in the clouds...God IS LOVE, and He is IN us, He IS us. So when we learn to truat our inner guidance and intuition, we are essentially in holy union with the Divine. Sometimes what we *think* we want is coming from an ego standpoint, and is not what we truly *need*. Prayer and meditation is a great way to habe those real, intimate conversations with God and learn to trust and have faith in the divine process & timing.

A mentor of mine agreed to sell me a small business he owned so I started working there and when the day came to sign the paperwork, he backed out. I had just gotten engaged and didn’t have anywhere else to work and he owed me a lot of money. I begged the Lord for this sale to go through so I could have the means to start a family and the answer was no. I was devastated and at a very low point in my life. Why couldn’t God just let me have this.
A while later I found a similar business that was struggling so it was cheap enough for me to max out of credit and buy it and that was the foundation for what’s now an 8 figure business. After so many “no’s” to requests for things I thought I needed desperately at the time, it took me many years to figure out that God was protecting me from my own self. Had He given me what I prayed so hard for over the years, I would be in a devastating place right now. All praise be to God

Not been my experience, personally, with God. He does listen to our prayers. He longs for relationship with us more than anything. But God isn’t a magician. He’s a miracle-doer. Just because it may take a while for a prayer to be answered, or perhaps it’s answered differently altogether, does mean we were not heard or ignored. Maybe God just had another plan for us. One of the traits of the Holy Spirit is to even intercede for us, on our behalf when we cannot find the words. Amazing!
His response is always slow to us but it’s always on time!

Its good to discuss bible mattèrs such as prayer . At age 65 I still dont grasp the " technicalities" thereof....but I pray, sometimes pleading, and then leave it there. The King and Lord Saviour Jesus Christ heard me and it is with Him now. Some things I will ask for once - others more than once like when my btother was diagnosed with cancer, some very short under my breath, on occassion just say "Jesus".., but always remember to say thank you.
God hears all prayers in Jesus's name. Don't make it complicated like these men are doing.

Well yes and no. The reason it’s being portrayed as complicated in this video is because people have forgotten what real prayer looks like and what it means to truly pray (thanks for that post modernists and existentialism 😑😒)
There is a wrong way to pray according to the Bible (Pharisee and the tax collector, out in the streets for glory, double mindedness, etc). But Real prayer is simple, just forgotten and honestly hard to do sometimes. It’s an attitude and act of dependency and humility before God. When you are truly seeking God’s face, you’re demonstrating to Him outright that you need Him and need Him to change you. It’s a huge step of humility before God because you’re acknowledging who He is and His authority in your life, and that you truly can’t do it on your own.
Granted I don’t fully understand prayer myself, but from what I can observe in the Bible and the prophets, it’s certainly got much to do with that.
It was said you aren’t changing God’s mind you are changing Who You Are. It is the confident, content people who seem to be living their best lives. The people who follow the moral and ethical rules that they have set for themselves. Believe in yourself. Be a great person. Think good thoughts💭about yourself and others. Change who you are and watch what happens.

Any possibility could exist, even as part of the natural universe. But when one steps into the realm of the "super"-natural no one could have the slightest notion of what truth actually is. And just because all possible answers are available to the human mind, that doesn't make them real. Potential does not equate to actuality. That's why proof is so important.
This reminds me of that moment from that movie Evan almighty, where God tells her, ‘when you pray to God for a closer more loving family, does he zap your family with warm and fuzzy feelings, or does he give you an opportunity to be closer and more loving with your family.’ But in a more nuanced way. When I was in prayer and started having thoughts about the false prophets performing false signs and wonders in the last days, I asked him why couldn’t their be real signs and wonders leading people to repentance/The Truth about Jesus,I was imagining like healing and stuff but then images started flashing through my head if me standing before a city with my hands up to the sky like it was something bigger, He said you do it, I said that’s crazy and thought it was crazy imagination so I rebuked the whole prayer I thought maybe the enemy was tricking me so I said Father God if these thoughts are from you and this is something you want me to do then could I get a sign, wrapped up my prayer went outside looking for my daughter (she walks the neighbors dog) wasn’t expecting nor looking for the sign (God cannot be tempted if he’s speaking you’ll know) then a white dove 🕊/bird got my attention from bathing in a puddle, pretty sure it was a dove, I thought this is a lil odd first white dove I’ve ever seen in real life, either this is pure coincidence or maybe it could be my sign, I honestly wasn’t sure, so I said Lord I hate to do this but if that white dove/bird was suppose to be my sign could I get another sign specifically another white dove 🕊/bird to confirm the first one (again I wasn’t looking for it, he’ll put it right in front of you) a few moments later right after asking for confirmation I was walking back up to my house and I got my profile pic a white dove/bird made of clouds, in perfect sight,back to back coincidences? Why would God implore us to constantly approach Him in prayer then ignore us?
If he did in fact ignore the prayers he would be a liar, it says in the Bible that he hears ALL prayers, but it doesnt mean he has to answer all of them. if your prayer is one that is wicked he wont answer it. God does not, as countless prayers have shown me, answer half hearted questions and petitions to satiate momentary longings (though He still grants them to us in abundance). Jordan is right about thought and prayer, because the conscious mortal life begins in the mind, is judged in and by the heart, and is animated or restrained in and through our bodies in live time by those two instruments of our being.

I’m crying my eyes out because I’m confused. I pray and pray and pray and God seems to put me last. I’m not sure if this is his plan or if I’m doing something wrong. No social medias, no girlfriend, no sex, i do smoke hear and there occasionally. I just desire to spread the word of the gospel and do his work, but I can’t without his help. I recently lost my job, my car followed a few weeks later, it seems like the world is against me, all my friends have abandoned me, family doesn’t really speak with me, I’m doing all I can and it’s only making my life worst. I need answers before I relapse which I’m trying really hard not to do and God IS NOT LISTENING TO ME!!!

I think a good example of this is the movie "Gran Torino", in the beginning Walt is a very rough and loveless man and by the end with the help of neighbors and his priest he changes.

Sounds like you are describing the hole we all feel in us and we all try differently to fill.
Some try it with wealth, some try it with religion, some try it with drugs, some try it with parties, some try it with Sex.
But all of these cant fill the hole in us, worse: They only make the hole bigger and bigger, so we use more wealth, more religion, more and harder drugs, more parties, more Sex.
But it just doesn't work, its never enough.
My answer to this hole is Jesus and he is enough.
