  • A tutorial/walkthrough of how to use the Automa to play Scythe solo. That automa has many different move actions it can do and deciphering just how to execute them can prove challenging and some people have given up altogether. Hopefully this helps show how break it down in action so that more people can enjoy this game even when they have no one to play against!
    Music: www.bensound.com
    NOTE:
    At 33:14 the correct space would have been the factory as it was in the neighborhood of 5 automa units. It wouldn't have had any effect on the game though and on a later move worker I did put a worker there.
    I did count up my territories wrong at the end giving myself an extra one so I was still pretty short of a tie even if I had one more turn. If I had given myself the popularity recruit early on, I would have been in third tier of popularity earlier and with maybe a better combat or a couple more points elsewhere I probably would have won.
    Also, on the final turn when the Automa attacked, I forgot to consider the Character as a combat unit and it would have been the one selected to attack as it is the same distance from home base as the mech I selected, but breaks the tie with reading order. So even though the character would have left the factory, they would have left their worker there effectively gaining a territory on the final turn of the game. So I would have been and ADDITIONAL 3 points behind. sigh

    Thanks a lot for the video! I have played twice with Automa, but was still not quite sure about movement. It helped a lot watching this. Also fun to watch how you got more excited the longer you played. :)

      Thanks, Jared! I definitely pride myself on playing correctly. Will always probably be a mistake here or there, but I hope never too many. I bet we all make more mistakes than we think. This is the best Automa explanation video out there! Thanks a lot. Just a note about an error that I spotted at 34:30. You moved your mech and character to a mountain from a tunnel. However this move was invalid as you can only move between a mountain you control and a tunnel - not to just any mountain.

    • @ShaneandStuff
      @ShaneandStuff  6 років тому +3

      Dang you are right! The weird thing about this is after looking this ability up, the faction board just says "move between any mountain you control and any tunnel" which would make me think you can only go from mountain you control to tunnel, or vice versa. But in the rules it actually says you can move from mountain you control to mountain you control. DANG! just goes to show no matter what is written on the boards I think you always have to check the rules until you've memorized everything because often the description on the board is not quite complete. Thanks for the complement and the correction!

    • @alexChook
      @alexChook 6 років тому +2

      Shane and Stuff yeah it's a bit ambiguous on the board I agree. Looking forward to your next play through vid!

    • @ShaneandStuff
      @ShaneandStuff  6 років тому +2

      I thought about that ability again this morning and am like, moving from mountain to mountain wow that's pretty awesome. Of course it has to already be controlled so that's the balance but, using that ability wisely you could spread out like crazy maybe for end game controlling more territories. Secure mountains and tunnels early, use them to get around fast. Man I hope I get to play this game more in the new year. I just got both expansions and all the upgrades (metal coins, realistic resources, the board extension) so I've definitely got some content to tear through! I'll have to make another solo playthrough vid with all the upgrades and one of the expansion factions!

    Nice tutorial but you made a mistake at 15:48. You moved the Automa character onto the wrong encounter token. That one already has an Automa mech in it, therefor it is an invalid target as you cannot have two Automa combat units in the same territory. Its character should have moved into the encounter token north of the Automa's home territory. Edit: Ah, you caught it a little later and corrected it.

    • @ShaneandStuff
      @ShaneandStuff  6 років тому

      Thanks Joseph! I first saw your message pop up and I thought "ugh, I made another mistake?" lol. Glad I caught this one. Hopefully my few honest mistakes add to the learning experience. That should have been obvious though since you can never have two automa combat units in the same space. Sometimes it's tricky keeping all that stuff in your head. Thanks again!

    Hi and thank you for the video, really like it and find useful! Just a question on Mech move at minute 28:21. Should you not move the mech underneath the Character on the lake as it is close to more numbers of Automa units even if the cards states at the end to get as close as possible to the enemy?
    Thanks

    • @ShaneandStuff
      @ShaneandStuff  7 років тому +1

      Nope. As the card says shortest distance to enemy combat units. The purpose of non-attacking move mech is to get the automa in the neighborhood of an enemy so that when an attack card comes up they are in the neighborhood and will attack. If the automa gets an attack move but none of their units are adjacent to the enemy, the move is skipped. You only execute moves which meet all the requirements, and you always execute exactly as written. I hope this helps!

    • @ShaneandStuff
      @ShaneandStuff  7 років тому +1

      to add to that putting the mech on the lake under the character would not meet the requirement of being closest and there is nothing in non-attacking move mech that says to put it next to most automa units. That's part of the move worker.

    You won that last fight against automa according to the open property 2nd from you right which gives to your opponent -2 to add to its power during the fight on the territory with the tunnel , so 7 + 3 - 2 = 8 against your 9 points )

    • @ShaneandStuff
      @ShaneandStuff  6 років тому

      I wish that had been the case. I'm assuming you're talking about the disarm ability and the way that ability works is it subtracts from total power before combat. So in this case the automa had 16 power and it would have been 14 which is still 7 + 3. :(

  • @tater4434
    @tater4434 3 роки тому +1

    It seems like you could theoretically play multiple automa with a single deck if you just select the appropriate side of the card depending on where individual automa players are in their star trackers. It would work a little differently, but it should function just fine, right?

    • @ShaneandStuff
      @ShaneandStuff  3 роки тому

      Theoretically this would "work" as in be playable. Not sure how it would ultimately play out though or if it would possibly have any weird issues for balance or difficulty if each automa is always executing the same moves (unless and until more than one is in a different place on the star tracker). I wonder if they would get to the same place at the same time or, since each move has requirements that could vary, if they would play out differently. Heck sounds like seeing how it goes would be worth trying! Let me know if you try it! There are also apps, and webpages (I think) so you could have more than one automa running off different decks without needing more physical decks.

    • @tater4434
      @tater4434 3 роки тому +1

      @@ShaneandStuff I did end up trying it with two automa and another human player. I felt like I wasn't doing everything quite right since I haven't used automa all that much, but I thought it worked fairly well. It was functional anyway. I think each automa just moved a little slower than usual, but I didn't mind that with another human player because I really just wanted the automa to be an additional obstacle rather than something to actually compete against. For that I thought it worked alright. I would do it again. 👍🙂

      @@tater4434 Awesome! Even if not done perfectly it's definitely great to be able to put more on the board to strategize around. While a 2 player game of Scythe can be good, it can also be pretty unbalanced. I think it's a much better game with more factions on the board.

    • @Lines42
      @Lines42 2 роки тому

      We tried 2 Automas with one deck during development, but it didn‘t work out. There can be a huge swing (advantage/disadvantage) to one Automa, dependent in how the cards will be distributed between the decks. There might be some games where it works, but that‘s pure luck, while others might fall apart, die to bad card distribution. We recommend playing with a full deck for each Automa.

    Great video dude but.......... You actually did win!!!! The automa mech attacked your mech on a tunnel and, as you were Saxony Faction one of the mech abilities is "Disarm" (Before combat on a territory with a tunnel, opponent gets -2 power) You beat the mech by one combat power. You would of then received a star which would of broken the tie that you thought you had.

    • @ShaneandStuff
      @ShaneandStuff  7 років тому

      I wish that were true. But it isn't for two reasons.
      1. I was Rusviet. Automa was Saxony.
      2. The disarm ability applies to the power track. Not to the power committed in battle. So since Automa was full before battle it wouldn't have made a difference. They still would have spent 7. :(
      It's kind of cool it came so close though for that battle. Makes for a good video! I'm thinking of doing a pure play through in the near future. No explanations just playing.

    You don't actually get to see which factory card the automa gets. You just remove one face down from the deck, randomly.

    • @ShaneandStuff
      @ShaneandStuff  2 роки тому

      I guess technically you're right it says that in the full rulebook but the reference card just says it takes a random card. It leaves out the face down part. Not sure it makes that huge of a difference since when a human player takes a card it's put out face up. Kind of an odd rule, not sure I know the point or why they didn't say face down on the reference card.

      I'm sure to be playing exactly the same would mean much more complication and time spent figuring out the Automas moves. Distilling it down makes it more playable and still you play largely the same. You don't want the Automa to get to the factory first. You don't want them to spread out too much. You don't want them to attack you before you're ready. It's still pretty close to a real opponent it just doesn't follow the same rules. Plus, you can play with as many as you want up to the max players for the game.
