  • "DIY Stone Barn Restoration : Beginner Chainsaw Experience : Irish Farmhouse Renovation / Restoration" is all another step towards one day completing our Irish farmhouse, ancient stone farm buildings and homestead.
With the majority of the lime plaster on the walls being sound and solid, we are not going to be pulling it all off the walls only to have to re-plaster using the traditional materials of lime ( natural hydraulic lime) and sand. Dawn explains.
The 250 year old stone farm building restoration is moving forwards as Dawn continues her lime mortar repairs & hard work cutting stones as she repairs the damaged walls and Ben tackles the huge Ash tree root with the chainsaw which is pushing against the wall. As a beginner to the chainsaw, progress is slowed down even more due to stones within the roots which constantly blunt the chainsaw. Ben sharpens the chainsaw and tensions the chain for the first time.
Being complete beginners at DIY farmhouse renovation, really needing a "homesteading for beginners" guide and now starting amateur archaeology, we are taking it slowly, enjoying everything we do no matter how hard it is, to one day realise our dream of running a fully functioning homestead from our once derelict Irish Farmhouse.
Using only natural hydraulic lime (NHL) and sand, we are looking to restore the farmhouse and farm buildings with a sympathetic restoration rather than renovate.

Haha, Ben - love the music genre change as you pivot from your noisy chainsaw to Dawn quietly sliding in lime render - well done footage! Of course kitties roaming around and offering no assistance whatsoever, LOUNGE LIZARDS! I'm always fascinated to see pictures of nature growing over man-made items - trees can literally envelop entire bikes, tires, tools - nature's way of saying "Get out of the way, you're in my lane." Seriously Dawn, there's NO area of that wall repair that can be criticized - you did superb work, bravo! Ben, since you've created all those slices in the root, wouldn't it be easier to hammer a sharp chisel to chip away the wood in slices? Carry on, haha, I'm only a lazy woman sitting on her couch with air-conditioning, drinking tea and snacking apple crisp.

Haha he was very chuffed with himself with the music for that! It worked really well. Oh yes the lounge lizards they saunter along have a nose at what is going on, shout a bit and then wander off again! It’s quite amazing with that root and the way it has grown very slowly through the wall and not dislodged some of the stones….just ever so slowly grown around it. I know what you mean actually because I saw a picture a few days ago on Facebook of a tree that had grown through and old wrought iron gate!
Thanks Tracy, the wall is really looking good, lots more to do with the rest of the building but it’s now not a scary job to be doing so fingers crossed it will be a lot quicker going now I’ve got a hang of it.
Good thinking with the hammer and chisel! We will try anything and any suggestion at this point lol

Exhaustion brings lack of motivation, you must pace yourselves and use labour saving machinery if you can afford it occasionally, to help prevent the physical tiredness. You need to avoid burnout so treat yourselves to the odd spa day or long weekend away preferably somewhere sunny. You are doing very well and this is a huge ambitious project, which you only have to do the once! When the building work is completed you will have time to enjoy the house and surroundings.

More sand for Dawn arrives tomorrow too so no doubt she will be repairing the walls in the building.

Something tells me that sunburn will not help your motivation one bit Dawn 😉😂 (obviously I hope you didn't burn)
So Ben, have you started measuring and drawing plans for the barn doors you want to build? 🤔 ( no pressure at all there, apologies 😳)
That was a fun wee piece with the change between that calm of Dawn's stonework to the frantic brutality of the chainsaw and the music to match both 🤣🤣
For that root Ben how about using a cheap 10mm auger bit on a drill as the tip will stop drawing as soon as it hits stone and you should be able to quickly build up a good map of where the stone is and where or where not to cut with the chainsaw..
Great video again this week and nice to see even move strength going back into that old barn wall,,
Dawn,, don't forget that stone by stone you are bringing an utter wreck back from the brink of falling down that's an incredible achievement with no small amount of pressure you've taken on your shoulders, it's no small wonder you just can't be arsed sometimes and need a rest from it.

Haha no it probably wouldn’t. Luckily the sun went in and it clouded over so it wasn’t too bad in the end lol
Well, funny you mention it but we were discussing the doors today and whether we should restore the building back to the single door that it used to be or carry and just fix up the end and have double doors 😂 I think we decided on the double doors because it’s a lot of work involved in rebuilding a four foot wide and 6 ft tall stone wall! 🤣

I'm lucky enough to have 5 acres of woodland I look after and I started out with the exact chainsaw you have. Although I've moved on to Stihl stuff now , because some of the plastic casing near the drive sprocket started to melt a bit over prolonged use, I still use it occasionally. I guess I've had it about 5 years or so and I've always loved the way it starts so easily. I've found it's always useful to have a backup for when I get my main saw stuck and I can then usually free the stuck bar with my reserve saw. One of my errors when starting off was that I unknowingly hand sharpened one side of the chain more vigorously than the other. This made any cut I did go a bit wonky. It looks like the sharpening tool you have will prevent that from happening so I think that was a good investment. The stonework renovation is absolutely amazing. I hope you're really proud of the way it's turning out cos it brought a tear to my eye seeing how confidently you apply the lime mortar. Well done to you both and keep the videos coming.

Once in a while Richard we get a comment and it makes us realise sometimes we are doing things right. To have someone comment who has the experience to tell me I have made a good purchase is nice. To me it made sense to buy something like the sharpener which would be good for a beginner with no experience. The angle is done for me and I can't really go wrong with it. The file seems a bit poor but it is working out OK at the moment. The chainsaw itself should be big enough for us moving forwards or at least until I know what I am doing. We may run out of things to cut before then though.
Dawn always said that she wanted to try and tackle the lime work on her own which is fine and only call on me for the largest stones or extra little bit of height. Other than that, the repairs are all Dawn. From her doing all of the joist pockets, the thresholds and then the collapsed wall under the window I think she got the bug for liming and I think she is doing an amazing job. Lots to do and bigger than she has done so far, but I have no worries at all.
Thank you for a great comment Richard. Have a nice night.

So glad you invested in a canopy as this will help you to continue with most of the outside work regardless of any rain. Dawn is doing an amazing job with the stonework and she looks so chilled out doing it. Is there any chance of the farmer neighbour putting a chain around that root and helping to shift it perhaps? Just a thought.

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  Місяць тому

The canopy has been amazing! Luckily it didn’t rain too hard but the rain we did have did not bother me one bit and it’s great also for keeping out the sun if we do get a hot one! The farmer neighbour did say he had thought about it but he suspects it might shift the wall of the building as some of the roots look like they have grown beneath it unfortunately. So chainsaw and a prayer is going to be the way forward for us 😂

    Hi Dawn and Ben.
It is a pleasure to see you again, despite that small discouragement, giving your best to advance in the different stages and fronts of your journey.
Dawn, your work with the stones is turning out wonderful, impeccable and looks very close to how it should have been originally, I don't know anything about building with stones, but the “castellated” and the lines of force that can be seen appear very solid and geometric, very logical (as well as aesthetically beautiful).
Seeing yourself making fine details “Edging” with the mason's ax indicates that your expertise grows with each day of work accomplished. Bravo!!!
I don't know about building with stones, but I know something about rebellious paints. An entire wall peeled off and 2 or 3 “Plasticized” pieces that don't come out with anything!!!
What they are doing is correct "Moisten", but when this doesn't work either, there are some tricks: -Moisten with hot water (whatever your hand can handle). -Moisten with water with detergent, a little dishwashing liquid, the glycerin in soaps makes the humidity remain acting for longer. -Moisten with embossed paper (kitchen towel, paper), wet a piece of towel and “stick” it to the stubborn paint, so that it maintains the humidity even more. And after a while scrape with the spatulas.
There are even more stubborn paints, which can be tested by heating the stain with a hair dryer. Indoors, I would not recommend an industrial heat gun since when the paint overheats, it releases toxic gases.
Finally, as for these pieces of paint, you can sand them by hand with medium grit, superficially, and then moisten.
This episode was very varied, and very entertaining, even with a hint of “Monty Python”, the awning box had its role.
Ben said in a comment that he will welcome ideas for the big root thing. They already recommended the Chisel and Hammer, which was my first thought, I would recommend “Metal Wedges and the Mallet” to have them on hand, in case the chisel gets stuck…
To weaken the root without fear of hitting a stone and “Killing the edge” there are some drill bits for multiple materials, without having to change from one to another, there are several brands, I don't know if they are large sizes, but I think that is worth investigating.
    www.izartool.com/es/noticias/item/313-1876-multimat-broca-todos-materiales
Well, in the end and to encourage you in any way I can, you already know that it was my birthday recently (61), just yesterday we were able to get together to celebrate it as a family, our father, my sister, my nephew and my little niece. We made some smoke offerings for lunch… and at “La Once” (5 o'clock) a small cake and coffee with milk. So even virtually I treat you to 2 slices of pancake cake with lemon cream, to share with your tea.
See you next week “Bye bye”.
    Mario.
(Dawn's music is “The Song of Dawn” by Edvard Grieg, very good musical game Ben). 🌄

Hi Mario, it’s a pleasure to see you too. We’re really sorry that we are only just getting to your comment but I think because of the link below UA-cam put your comment in “held for review” and I have only just seen we had lots and lots of comments in there! 🫣
Thank you very much, the stonework is a pleasure to work with, heavy at times…especially when you reach the top of the wall! Edging the stones is a highly satisfying past time. To take a stone that is almost right but not quite and shaping to make it a perfect fit is very pleasing!
Paint….hmm…yes, some of that paint is very “rebellious” the majority of it comes off very well indeed but lulls you into a false sense of security and then you hit the rebellion patch! Grrr!😡 Thank you for all of your tips as they will come in very handy for each and every wall that has some form of, not so good for lime walls, paint. Fingers crossed most of it will come off ok, although there is one room that I have a nasty sinking feeling is going to be very very difficult.
Haha Ben likes a bit of Monty Python, so he will be pleased to hear that! I will also pass on your tips for the root issue. It’s proving to be a right pain in the proverbial!
That sounds lovely for your birthday and belated birthday wishes to you and thank you so much for the “virtual” pancake cake with lemon cream, it sounds delicious! Especially the Lemon cream part! 😉❤️
Thank you for noticing the music, Ben does spend a lot of time on the music and getting it to fit the job in hand or scenery. Once again very sorry for the delay in answering your comment. We need to have a look at our settings for what gets held for review.
All the best Mario and hope you have a lovely weekend coming up ❤️

Hi Ben and Dawn, what a great video, I must admit some weeks seem longer than others waiting for your new video, you definitely spoilt me when you were doing all those ground works, when I think back and the conditions you two not only worked so hard but managed to get videos filmed and released, it is so nice to see you working outside in some sunshine but hedging your bets with the gazebo ☔
I think you having a break for a couple of days have done you the world of good because you both look so well, I know getting as much done as you can is important to you but looking after yourselves is far more important because there is no renovation without you, so be kind to yourselves and go out for days out because if you stay at home you will only push yourself, treat yourself to coffee and cake in some lovely Irish village, now that sounds lovely 😋

I can't believe that we have actually caught the sun, but even from back in March when the sun was out we were tanning slowly. The 7 days a week videos used every spare second of the day. Hi Neuron, thanks for joining us.
Well after our Yellow rain weather warning, not a lot came of it, I think we had one large downpour, which filled out water tanks, and that has been it. It is very overcast at the moment and I have just looked and we have some light rain, I don't think it will last though. I think it is dryer this year than last year, it just didn't seem to stop raining.
The temperature is rubbish though. 18 - 19 C in the day and 6 - 8C at night, it isn't very warm at all. Shouldn't it be red hot in Cape Town this time of year? Hopefully it improves for you this week coming.

Remember that crow bar I said you should get? It would make short work of removing the stones from the stump. And you could use it split off chunks when you have made a cut. One or two steel wedges would also help. A root is like a knot in timber. No grain to split along. It will be hard work...

You know, Ben, I’ve been looking into getting rid of stumps on my property and I’ve been reading that you can do this cuts like you did and fill them with epsom salt and they will die down fairly quickly. Maybe that would work in the root too. You might not get it as fast, but it might be an option. Your idea about the walls in the house is so sensible. I love it! Have a great week! See you next time! I watch a lot of UA-cam videos like this and have to tell you I throughly enjoy watching yours!
Some channels you might want to check out that are doing similar things that you are doing is. Escape to Rural France, Domaine Sauvage and the original Homestead. They just put a new roof on there home and they used panels that look like the terracotta tiles. No idea on price or if it would suit your needs but might be something to look at?
I don’t know a lot about home repairs but have done some and I can tell you one thing for sure. Get those gutters fixed before winter. Water will destroy everything. Even if it is just enough so that the water is not going down the side of your house. If it is getting between the render and stone of your house it will ruin any work you have done.
That should be the number one priority.
Looking forward to seeing more videos. Greetings from Vancouver Canada

Good evening Sharon, how are you? Hopefully well.
Haha, scraping paint, I think Dawn is planning on some more tomorrow while she is waiting for more sand to arrive.
I am hoping tomorrow will be the end of that bloody root. Had a couple of good ideas on how to cut it from an Axe to a drill, so by the end of the day.... I will be shattered hahaha.
We put some "root out" or another name down some holes we drilled when the tree was first felled, but not sure how far down this went. Now that there isn't much tree left I don't know what effect, if any, it is having. Depending on what is left we may have to look at other options to get rid of it.
At the end of the day, as long as the root is dead and I can create enough space for the repairs and future safety of the building, we will be happy. Just read that back and it sounds quite arsy... it isn't meant that way, it is meant nicely :-)❤️
Yes, most people have said dogs, but a couple have said about cats too. After reading, it seems a horrible virus.

I've been watching from the beginning, now up to 19. I love the house. There was plenty to daunt you but you kept going. It was heroic. Those veneered plywood panels must have been 60s or 70s effort to smarten up, and so depressing to see what the wood was like behind them and the other gubbins. So impressed. Also saw another video about the grant that people get and the 13 month time limit, and having to fulfil conditions. Maybe a good thing you didn't go that route so you can do it at your own pace. I know you told us how the grant added to the house price and that you were one month before it was extended.

Wow thank you for going back to watch them all! It’s a lovely house isn’t it? We love it too. ❤️ We cannot deny in the beginning it was very very daunting but with the more things we have done and time passing on by, it has become a lot less daunting, which is lovely!
Yes, I would guess at around that time for the boards, I have heard them referred to as beauty boards and vanity boards by different people. Oh it has been so soul destroying with the house and all of the timber that resides in it….so sad to have removed all that we have done. We really wanted to be able to conserve as much as we could but the rot in here has been extensive.
Yeah we’re pleased we didn’t/couldn’t go for the grant because it has meant we can do things at a much slower pace and learn as much as we can before doing, it certainly takes the added pressure off with not having it.

I made a living for a couple of years using a chain saw and i got the same sharpener you got cause i hate using the file that sharpener works great. One thing with saws ya got to be mindfull of and thats where the tip of the bar is at cause you can get kickback which can be deadly.I'd say you got all kinds of stone in that stump dulling and knicking your teeth and if your going thru alot of gas i'd sat its a dull chain cause you should get about 45 mins a tank with that saw.Your chips when sharp should be the avg length of your finger nail if its powder the chain is dull. They are a great tool the more ya use it the more you'll like it .

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  19 днів тому +1

      Hi Billy, thanks for commenting.
I am pleased with the little sharpener, works really well for me, I can't see me ever going to a manual file, it would be blunter by the time I finished than it was when I started lol.
It doesn't take long on the stump for the blade to go dull but the sharpener really works as the chips are as you describe then first done.
The kickback is an issue but I have watched video which explains how to reduce it happening, but I know it doesn't mean it won't happen. One thing I like about this chainsaw is how sensitive the brake is on it, even when using it gently, my knuckles can just touch the brake and the chain stops instantly. This gives e confidence in the event of kickback.
You are right with the more I use it..... It isn't a scary tool anymore, just one I treat with as much respect as the other saws we have.
Thanks for such a great comment :-)

No, all of the blue will go as it is a modern day paint and not lime wash. It traps moisture beneath the paint layer and causes mould as it can't dry out / breath. The pink paint is lime wash on top of lime plaster so helps the walls breath and stops mould from occurring.

the shed or future workshop is gonna need a long beam from the top of one gable end to the other, the cheapest option would be using a round log, such as a pine tree or something like a telegraph pole, & maybe get the farmer with a front bucket on his tractor to lift it up into place, i myself would be on the hunt for a nice straight tree, cos wood of that diamiter that you,ll need to span that distance will be expensive, the top of the walls just need some sqaure beams fastend to the top of the walls once the walls are level on top, & cos they don,t have to be in one continus length, some of the old floor joists would do, & then all it needs is 3x2s from the top beam to the bottom, then corrugated tin sheets etc, anyway a huge well done for what you have already done. The place will be lovely

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  Місяць тому

I think it is just over 6m in length so it will be a big one and not cheap. The original wasn't that large, not even a joist thickness. We need to do some research on it, which we like to do before we start something new, but it won't be for a little while. We will be going traditional methods so like you say, the wall plate will sit on top of the wall once level, bedded into lime and fixed down. "Then all it needs....." lol, you make it sounds so easy.

Are you a colored wall type people or do you like a crisp white wall with colorful decoration… I think I remembered you like gothic type decorations. Dawn you are getting better and better on those stone walls. Ben I really had know idea that you had to sharpen each tooth of the blade…glad you found a bit of a swifter way to do that. And dogs do get distemper, or at least our dog gets vaccinated so he doesn’t get it. Dawn I’m with you it’s been a bit of a strange month for us here in Maryland. Ugh 😤 too many years spent doing that…I was very glad when it went out of fashion in England years ago but it’s slowly creeping back! lol at least there won’t be any wallpaper in this house lol. I think it’s to do with the pigments that we’re available for the limewash, there’s a mix of a couple of pink shade and an orangey peach colour too. Oh he really does, it’s become a bit of a nemesis of his at the moment! He will get it done eventually…to be fair we need only just enough out of the way to be able to get to the wall to repair it. The rest can stay put as long as we can stop it from growing. We have weed killed it a while back to fingers crossed that was enough to stop it. 🤞

The rocket stove idea works on stumps well.

Maybe instead of the chainsaw you can try with some sort of jackhammer?

Is there any way off digging a little under the root and popping some kindling underneath and burning it? Just depends what’s around and if you can have outdoor burn offs but being rural I’d imagine you’re ok. Just save your chainsaw blade if there is stone is within the root. I’d imagine it would burn pretty quick? Just an idea. Enjoying you both transforming the cottage. You’re both doing a fantastic job.

It would be lovely if we could set fire to it, because I suspect you’re right and it would get rid of it a lot quicker but it is illegal to burn anything outdoors in Ireland unfortunately. 😔😤
Aww thank you we’re glad to hear you are enjoying it all and thanks for coming along for the journey 😊

I was wondering if making a fire on the root could not have been an obtion in helping to remove it..

I think there is some kind of stump disolving product you can put in those grooves you have cut and it will take care of that over time. Check with the hardware store
