- "Installing A Wood Burning Stove In The Farmhouse Kitchen, Ireland" shows how quickly we managed to restore the important heat to the kitchen in our once derelict Farmhouse in Ireland after we had to remove the potentially dangerous Waterford Stanley 8 Range which had been, we believe, fitted in the 1960s. The wood burning stove fitted in this video is the Firewarm12 model.
With a new stainless steel 904 flue liner installed and a little bit of stonework to the existing hole in the chimney breast removed, the second hand log burner / log stove / wood burning stove is fitted, the colour restored with black stove polish (Zebo) and then a small fire lit to test it all out.
This is our first experience of installing a wood burning stove and we will be purchasing a second wood burning stove in the near future for the living room. The living room chimney has already the chimney liner installation done with the same stainless steel 904 flue liner and is pretty much ready for the the stove to be fitted.
Dawn finishes clearing the moss and bits of ivy which have been previously cleared from the 200 year old dry stone wall on the homestead, which took a back seat whilst we uncovered the suspected ancient courtyard or farmyard.
Being complete beginners at farmhouse renovation and really needing a "homesteading for beginners" guide, we are taking it slowly, enjoying everything we do no matter how hard it is, to one day realise our dream of running a fully functioning homestead from our once derelict Irish Farmhouse.

What a god send eh? Myself and our friend half killed ourselves moving it from his barn to our kitchen, the driving it down the road was easy... it is soooooo heavy.
When it is lit, the kitchen is so warm we have to set it to minimum and only put small amounts of fuel in. If we don't have a range by Christmas in the kitchen, we have no doubt that this stove will keep us warm. We are that impressed by it, we are still looking for the same model for the living room.

Huge thank you to the person who loaned them the stove!! How wonderful. I kept waiting for smoke out of a chimney on the outdoor shots, but apparently it was later than that when installed. So glad you have a nice warm fireplace. Loved seeing the cat in the tree and the outside shots of the land and how amazing it looks after so much hard work. Everything is just looking better and better. All that work is paying off!
The land is looking great isn't it. We are so pleased with the "farmyard" area. We still have a lot to do but no rush with any of it really, we are just enjoying our experience.
The person who has loaned us the stove is a great person for so many reason. It is the same person that gave us the Victoria Plum tree and the flue liner for the living room.
Yes, no smoke out of the chimney... the day went a bit like this...

It was only this morning (Wednesday) that the stove was lit for the first time. This evening is a real fire in it. Logs, coal and boy is it hot in the kitchen.
Steve is a little hardcore cat. He isn't bothered too much by the rain and was quite happy outside with Dawn. Alan on the other hand is a bit of a lightweight haha.

Yes I think it did, the house has been empty for a long time, maybe 15-20 years. Lots of passers-by have told us how lovely it is to see someone bringing it back to life.
That Zebo is the business! The lovely fire means the heart of the home is back. Hope it keeps you and the kitties warm!
It’s good stuff, brought the stove up a treat! Looks almost new again! It really does and it’s lovely to have to heat back in here once again! Kitties have yet to seek it out. I’ve placed a cat bed either side of it to keep them toasty!
I am in my 70s and I can remember my mum blacking the range with zebra blacking when I was about 6. The markings on the packet are similar but we always called it zebra blacking. Great stuff.
I know you said you still have loads more to do, but, what you have done is darn good, you've both worked so hard,you should be proud of yourselfs.The wood burner is brill, love seeing a real fire,, very welcoming and cosy . Loving seeing your cats,soo cute 🥰 👌

I love a wood burner, heart of the home for sure. That’s quite the pile of stuff, very impressive looking when it’s all together. A record of weeks of hard work. Hope it will turn into some great compost one day.
Oh it really is, and the heat it throws off is phenomenal! We thought the range was good at heating the kitchen but wow this stove is on another level! Yeah that is a huge pile there, it’s an accumulation of months of clearing there. I think it’s going to take months and months to break down! 🫣😊

No idea where you're throwing it, but that should be put 3 foot of it under the raised beds before the soil from the 200 year old courtyard. was put down on top of it. And that was satisfying seeing the courtyard from there. yes I think Tony R would be proud or at least Phil that likes his pint lololol
Haha yes a cosy fire indoors isn’t great for the motivation to make you get up and go outside! 😂 we have thrown lots of branches and dead roots into the raised bed area that we are making, but the bits that we throw go into a huge compost type pile the other side of where we were. Normally just old bramble and black currant roots.
The courtyard looks great from a distance. We will try and get the drone up at some point when the weather allows lol
I watched a UA-cam video last night of the 3 best time team farmyard discoveries, bit grander farms than ours lol but still interesting to watch them get uncovered 😊

Dawn you love being outside always something to be sorted. Today it was really nice and not to windy.Ben there are some very helpful people in the world. How decent to lend you the stove and it looked in perfect condition. The blacklead really made it like new.I keep my kettle on it and if I am making a stew I start it of on my gas stove and then put it on the stove to stew away for a few hours in the cold weather. I know you all will enjoy the heat from it.Take care and God Bless you all xx
Oh I really do! Love the fresh air and the sounds of nature out there and yes always so much to be done. It has been not bad today, but of rain early on today but nice and dry now and we actually have the back door open! Mainly due to the stove making it too warm! 🤣 but that’s a vast improvement on the last couple of weeks!
He’s another lovely bloke who lives not too far down the lane from us. We feel very lucky to have so many lovely people around us. It came up really well with the black lead. We have so far boiled 3 kettles on it for the washing up so it’s already saved us money in not having the little electric stove on that we normally use lol. Ooh that sounds lovely, a tasty stew simmering away on it! Xx

It looks great doesn’t it Pa? From a distance you can tell just how flat it all looks now. It really was some amount of earth that we’ve shifted 😂 Yeah it’s funny because I thought, when I started lifting it, I need a pitch fork! Aww yes, they love it out there, makes me happy watching them run around and then launch up the trees! They still haven’t mastered the art of getting down so gracefully though! The stove is great and yes Ben is very pleased! lol he doesn’t do very well with the cold! 🥶 it’s a lovely stove, very cosy and warm. We’ll try and get small ones for the bedrooms too to make them nice and toasty! 😘 xxx

i use a 100 year old potbellied cast iron stove, it is amazing how much paper products and burnable trash is kept out of curbside pick up. i also keep an eye out for free wood once your land is cleared there is alot available,
We were looking at ways to reduce the costs of the recycling / waste collections, so maybe we now have the answer, thank you.
Oh we will have loads of wood when we sort it out and dry it. Just need to build a wood store next haha.

Very kind of them to loan it to y’all Today was the first time I understood the layout of your home when I saw the stairs beyond the doorway from the kitchen. I layed awake one night trying to figure out you homes layout. Lol. The things you think of when you can’t sleep. 😂. The area y’all cleared is really looking good even at this stage. Basically, look at the front of the house
The windows on the left of the front door are the Living room (sitting room / parlour) This is the room which had the Christmas decorations and where we just revealed the arched fireplace which Sean pulled the first flue liner up.
The window above that is Luka's bedroom. It has three windows. It was the second floor to be done.
To the right of the front door is the kitchen. This is where the new stove has just been fitted. Above the kitchen is our bedroom. The one with the wonky fireplace and blue painted walls.
Behind the front door is the stairs leading up to the landing and behind the stairs on the ground floor is the bathroom / toilet.
We have always meant to do a tour of the rooms but never managed to do it yet. We will.

Thank you for the verbal tour. For a long time I thought the out buildings and land was to the left side of your house and therefore the chimneys did not line up right. It took me a while to figure that out and when I saw the inside kitchen door led to the entrance way I began to make sense if the downstairs layout. I think y’all purchased a great farm home. I look forward to the patio area being finished and the roofs being put on the out buildings. I know those things take time. Dawn reminds me of a younger me. She has tenacity an you both have great work ethics. 🌳🌳🌳🪨🪨🪨❤️
Evening Ben and Dawn… that central plate on the top of the multi fuel stove is also designed to take a kettle or stewpot , just in case you hadn’t realised…. Nothing better than a slow cooked Irish stew Luvs ya both ❤
A few have said about a nice stew slowly cooking on the stove, something we must try.
At the moment the bolts don't sit flush and stand proud above the plate as these were missing. We need to try and find the actual bolts for this model in the hope they sit flush ready for the kettle or stew pot.

Even though it has only been a few days really, it became harder each day to warm the kitchen and living room with the Calor gas heaters and fan heater. Now this stove is lit we are actually roasting in here with the back door open a bit and the stove turned to minimum. Clearly much more efficient than the poor old range we took out.

Oh it really did, it looks almost brand new! No, unfortunately not up to date with the tetanus. We do always wear gloves though outdoors now though because we’ve just got used to wearing them really. And no Ben will definitely wear gloves the next time around, he isn’t sure why he didn’t have them on to begin with as he had them when he did the one in the living room.
Massive thanks to our friend for lending us the stove, he’s great! He was watching our video of when we took out the range and he WhatsApp’d Ben to say he had a spare stove we could borrow if we wanted, which we said “yes please and thank you very much!”
Garden clean up…hmm…no I can’t see it ever ending! Haha. And yes that pile is huge but they are both decreasing over time and it’s bonfire night in June in Ireland so maybe it will be gone soonish.
He’s getting good at the editing and fitting the right music to whatever is going on. He spends a lot of time on the videos. 🥰

Slowly but surely is a good pace haha. Real heat back in the kitchen is lovely. It was surprising how quickly everything started to cool down and became hard to heat with the calor gas and electric heater. Now this stove is burning it is sooooooo warm.

Get yourself a stove fan to sit on top. The heat spins the blades around and throws warm air into the room, that’s if you don’t already have one . Got mine from Aldi. 😊
Hi Kathryn, thank you. We have two, I just hadn't put them on the top, one is on there now though lol. They make a huge difference for such a small thing don't they with moving the warm air around. We have a larger single fan model and then a smaller two fan version, but one fan is a bit lazy and doesn't always wake up.

We had a wood burning stove in our kitchen many years ago. It was so nice to go into make dinner in my stocking feet and feel the warm floor. My husband would load up the stove at night and the house would be so nice and warm till morning. We would collect wood pallets and burn the wood from them. The pallets were hard oak so they burned a long time and that is what we always looked for, hardwood. Here in my State of New York, we have started to clean up from winter. Yesterday we raked up my side yard bed of flowers. It was 70*, today we are having rain and a damp day which puts my mind back to winter. Please "God", bring on the warmer spring days. There is lots of raking to be done!
I do like the warm floor by the range / stove, it makes me think I would love underfloor heating. The range used to last all night but I am not sure this stove will without putting loads of logs in on a slow burn. Hardwood pallets sound great, especially if you can get them for free. Certainly worth the time to break them up and cut them.
We have had some up and down temperatures lately, it felt really cold last week but not so bad this week. Rain yesterday morning, overnight and some today, and a little chilly.
Hopefully the warmer days will be here soon. Fingers crossed for us both.

That's a beautiful old stove. Those things were built to last a thousand years.
The back yard is looking very well also. I would be inclined to raise the level of the land in that dip between the yard and the land at the back. You could decide where the yard ends and the land begins. Fill the yard part to the top of the manhole cover (it's a trip hazard otherwise) with gravel or some kind of hardcore and then put some of the soil you accumulated with all that digging on the land part.
It really is a lovely looking stove, I think after seeing it and how well it performs we will be looking on Facebook marketplace for one very similar for the living room.
We’re really pleased with how it’s looking and going outside. Obviously still lots to do but it’ll get there. We’re quite liking the dip between the both and I’m not sure if it comes over on camera very well but it is quite a dip, so it would take quite a lot of levelling out. We will have to see if we can do some land shots and drone shots to make it easier to see. Also this is where Ben wants a bridge to be! lol. He has dug a channel for drainage so the yard area can drain off and the dip from the grassy area drains into it too. So far it’s working quite well…long way to go with sorting the drainage properly though. 🫣😊
@@thecornerhouseproject You could build a small retaining wall on the yard side to hold whatever you put there, gravel or whatever. Then have a ditch between the retaining wall and a bank on the other side going up to the land with a bridge between the two. I love the idea of a small foot bridge. That could look really cute. :)
I think with a massive rock there just below the surface, you either need a good bit of soil over it for drainage or some kind of hardcore.
If there's only a couple of inches of soil over the rock, the water has nowhere to go and the soil will turn to mud in seconds and I'm sure you've seen enough mud at this stage to last you a lifetime. :)
Oh yes we’ve seen enough mud! Hahaha. Hardcore was our thought for the ditch that Ben had dug down to the bedrock. It’s probably about 6 - 9 inches deep until it hits bedrock there, other parts of the land it’s not too far below. We have a lot of figuring out and work on our plates I think to get it all drained as best we can.
We do have some thoughts that are quite similar to what you’re proposing with the retaining wall, it’s just figuring it all out and how it will work with all the other variables and drainage. 🤔🫣

No smoke leaks, sure this new one is broken haha. It is lovely. Put logs on it, no smoke, no smell, put coal on it, no smoke and now smell. It does make it much nicer to be in the same room as it. I think the old range held on just long enough for the stars to align and a stove become available just like that.

I noticed a 2nd wood stove in the kitchen. Is that for the Livingroom? So Glad that you have heat in the Kitchen again, after working in the Garden in all that rain and mud without a stove in the kitchen must have felt terribly cold and damp. Show how Hardy you both are. I'd have been snuggled in bed with a hot drink staying warm lol

The second one is the Calor Gas heater, we have two of them. They are 3.4Kw (on maximum) gas heaters but are very thirsty with the gas. It is lovely to have dry heat again with the log stove. It is also so warm.
We did have a few "Oh, we have nowhere to dry X" moments, the gloves being the main one. It was starting to drop in temperature as the days went on. Luckily our great friend has saved the day :-)
A nice hot chocolate, lovely. Not sure about in bed though, you can be certain I would spill it hahaha.

Isn't it a lovely stove, it looks so posh in the kitchen and boy does it give out some heat. A range cooker will be lovely and one day we will get there. The blocked up chimney will be opened up and the range cooker can sit under there nicely.

So with that it was arranged. I didn't expect it to half kill us trying to move it haha. Sean is brilliant. We have said it before and will say it again, he hasn't let us down yet.
Zebo did a lovely job. It looked good anyway but now it looks like new.

The cats are loving being allowed out. 11pm last night, Alan was meowing at the door to go out. He doesn't know it is dark outside and isn't allowed out love him.

Dawn get a pitch fork. You can move that type of stuff with ease. Also small limbs. Please save your back.Also you can pitch it higher and further back. A 4 tine fork would wonders .Long handled
Well it’s funny because whilst I was picking up I thought I could really do with a pitch fork! Grabbed our normal garden fork but it didn’t work too well. After using the long handled shovel for moving that soil, I think I want all of my tools to be long handled…it took a bit of getting used to but really liking those now!

We are chuffed to bit with the stove. It has had it's real test this evening and it gives out more heat than the poor old range did. And the stove is on low.

Make sure you season your wood and its getting plenty of sun light no good in a area where its dull and damp plenty of air If you can get a old ibc tank take the lid of take the tank out and make a cap lid for the cage plenty of youtube I done one here in Tyrone and it's a good job :)
If you ever get your hands on a Hunter hearld stove warms up to 15 rads hot water its a game changer
Better still look for a decent Stanley 90 you can still buy the hot water cylinder wont break the bank there easy to restore my friend restored one and warms the water and does a mean roast in the oven heats the rads 😊😉😀☘️🏡
What a great idea with the ibc for the wood storage! A mat for moving the stove? As in just a normal like carpet mat or am I being stupid? 😂
The plan is to get a Stanley range again, ideally after we’ve taken the fireplace in the kitchen back to its original self, so that we can recess it back in there. We will be looking at getting a secondhand stove in the meantime for the living room so will keep an eye out for that manufacturer although we won’t probably look for one with rads just because that’s what we plan to do with the range.

Oh yes, I do love it outside I think it’s where I feel the most calm. I’ll have a go at most things but outdoors is where I prefer to be. Alan is the most precious out of them all. He loves being outside but not so much if he has to get wet and muddy paws! 🐾 🤣 Steve is much more hardy outside, peaches can take it or leave it with going out.

Thank you Penny! It’s going to look so good once it’s all uncovered properly and cleaned up a bit. Burning outdoors is banned in Ireland unfortunately as of last year I think. So sadly we can’t. A fire pit would be amazing though especially as we already have a little rounded patch in the middle of the court yard area. Cup of tea and cake sounds lovely too!

Ohhh exciting!!! I thought it was for the living room at first ,just how i imagined it now whistling kettel on top.an old toothbrush and rubber gloves are essential when black leading the stove .lovely to see it polished up and lit.❤
I thought of you as the first flame caught and up it went. Well the place was for the living room to be done first but the old range in the kitchen decided it was time for a change. The living room will be next though and you may even still get the double doors. We will see what we can find. The flue liner is ready :)

Hi Jackie! He does lots of bits around the house rather than outside which is a massive help, like the washing and tumble drying and then folding and putting it all upstairs. The vacuuming, washing up and makes us nice cups of tea too and lunch. So he’s pretty good really. He chops all the wood for the fire upstairs too. So he does do his bit 😊
We’re really pleased with how it is all looking out there, it’s all coming along rather nicely! Oh and the stove is AMAZING! Chuffed to bits with that and will be looking on facebook marketplace for one just like it for the living room because of how good it is.
Hahaha well the digging had finally got us to the point where we couldn’t wait to finish it all. There has been some choice words here and there can’t deny! 😉🤫❤️

Ben, I learned my lesson about wearing gloves…two stitches. Boy that is a lovely thing to see…a fire going in the kitchen. I was amazed by the invisible person with the gloves on holding onto the grate of the heater. LOL. It really looked like those gloves were holding on for dear life. Allen looked like he was enjoying the garden even with the rain.
Yeah he isn’t sure why he didn’t put his gloves on because he did for the living room flue going in. Sliced three fingers! Luckily no stitches needed. It is a beautiful fire, sooo warm it’s amazing!
Hahaha oh my goodness I wondered what you were talking about and then I remembered the gloves drying out on the calor gas fire! It looks sooo funny doesn’t it, looks even weirder when we have both our pairs of gloves on there drying! 🤣🤣

Stove turned out lovely! About the patio area… with so much water, might it be a good idea to take up the old stones little by little and lay sand or tiny gravel under them and then fill in the empty bits with other stones from the yard? Since it could be costly you could start with the bit connecting the building to the path, and then little by little work out from the door, maybe in squares of progress. Disclaimer: I know nothing about it but that muddy messes are generally unpleasant and sand and gravel drain water more easily than mud! 😅
Oh, and I was thinking gravel as sand may just wash out.

Yes, we were thinking of doing gravel in between the stones just to help with the drainage and also to secure some of the stones in as well. You’re definitely right with muddy messes being unpleasant lol I like your idea of doing it in squares of progress, it won’t seem so overwhelming a job doing it like that too! Haha yes gravel would be better than sand in our rainy climate! 😂

It is a great stove! Soooo warm….might even be a little too warm in here tonight! 🤣 It’s amazing that he lent it to us and we are so grateful he did because it’s been a bit chilly since the range packed up lol.

Just done the 4 hour drive in a monsoon,
Flooded roads all over again. When's it going to stop !
We were lucky with just how quickly. The flue liner was here two days after ordering it and a simple photo of it to Sean with a couple of thumbs up he was here two days later. He already collected the back piece of the stove so he could get the black pipe and 6" flue connecting piece (I didn't want to buy the wrong thing) The loan of the stove is incredible and also makes me realise they are a little bit heavy, certainly this size. The car managed as it was just up the road, surprised the pair of us didn't end up in hospital after moving it up hill from his barn to the car. Not sure how far it was, but too far haha.
If the coalman is around we will never say no lol.
That 2 hours could have been summer if we go by the rainfall we had last summer. It did fill the tanks up again though which is always a win for us.
Good old flooded roads, you can't beat them.

That's a really good stove, should give out a fair bit of heat. After Zebo is applied it does tend to smell a bit when hot but that soon wears off.

I think by default it has ended up in thirds. The lower land is sort of thirds too. It does make life easier looking at it like that.

Do you happen to know what make and model it is? We have had it upside down, looked on the back etc and there are no markings at all. Hopefully you know more than we do so I can have a Google.
The heat is bonkers, much hotter than the range. To be fair though, the range was basically a fire box at the end of the day. The oven side didn't work in the least.

@@thecornerhouseproject I don't want to be rude jumping in on spudsnsalsa's post but in case they don't get back to you it is a "Firewarm" stove not sure what size you have there but now with the name you can do some research.
I have the smallest of their stoves in my workshop a non boiler, its about the same size as the Stanley Oisin I have in my livingroom and must say the Oisin throws out more heat than the Firewarm.
That stove looks to have a boiler, is it ok to use it without the boiler connected?

Thank you Denis. A quick Google for Firewarm and up it popped. I will look at the sizes to find it's output. Lots I think haha.
It isn't ideal without the boiled connected as they can burn through but our friend said he isn't bothered when I said about it. The one he is running has a none connected boiler. Our plan it to get something connected ASAP to benefit from the free hot water. We just need a cylinder, water tank, pipe and a plumber haha.
Oh, we found another tooth from the old grass cutter like you said we would. I think 3 now.

He is a lovely bloke but when he said he had a stove we could borrow we were chuffed to bits. It gives a bit of time to get the fireplace opened properly and to get a range sorted. The surround probably won’t go back on, but we are not sure yet, we will see once we get a stove for the living room.

Delighted you got loan of that stove from neighbour....maybe he will allow you keep it for big living room, once you have your new range. I,ll bet you could fry eggs in a pan on it! My Mom used to make delicious potato cakes on top of our old range.....Enjoy the warmth! ❤❤🎉🎉
June 23 I think will be our day, or night as it were.
We are chuffed to bits with the loan of the stove, already you can feel the heat around the house and the smell of warmth too. Do you get the feeling I like warmth haha. No, this one is a loan only as he will be using it at his renovation in the future. It was nice for him to see it lit today as although he bought it a long time ago, it has been in storage since then.
Sean said as kids they used to make toast on the top of their range, I am not sure it is the same on a stove, so fried eggs it may be haha.

Yes, it is another building but a long story short, we don't own that one. It used to belong to this farmhouse and all of the acres of fields but was sold when the previous owner split up the land and put it up for sale.

U need the stove going and that’s perfect. You will find more heat less fuel too. Putting the stove in the car boot is mad. Times like this a car trailer is must. Once u have a trailer you wonder how u did with out it.
A trailer was on our lists, high up. A car with a tow bar and a trailer. The first flaw was the car we bought had no trailer and up until the stove, luckily we didn't need one. A trailer is still on the list though, as is a tow bar haha.
The stove is great, already warmer in the kitchen than the range could get full of fuel and wide open. But, to be fair to the range, it was very very poorly. This stove is the business.

A double dry stone wall has what are called two faces, one each side of the wall. The centre of the wall is filled with a ‘hearting’ of small stones. Where available ‘through stones’ will be placed at half way up the wall to add to stability and lifespan. Walls can be finished with an upright (soldier or cow and calf), slanted or flat row of cap stones or copes.

Hope the hand gets better!! We took out a similar stove in our project and it did make a racket when the water pipes weren't connected! Be careful with yours if there is no water circulating in the boiler. Would you connect it to a tank or even a few rads?
All plastered up at the moment, 3 fingers sliced! No noise so far, the bloke who lent it to us said he has his without it being connected up but we are looking at getting it connected sooner rather later because it means water heated for free, we just need to get it straight in our heads what we need to get it up and running lol this is all new to us. Future plans for rads too, just might be little way off yet.

Honestly, I figured you guys would remove that cemented-in part of that kitchen fireplace and expose the original fireplace. (maybe you will eventually?) That would be super-cool. it looks like an old cooking fireplace - that would be neat to restore in the kitchen.
Also, I literally JUST noticed you have another building to the right of that outbuilding you've been working on. I thought that was a tree up until now! What are you going to do with that?
Yes, the blocked up original cooking fireplace will all be opened up as we planned to. It will be a late spring / summer job when we don't need the heat. We didn't want to have to rush into it, things go wrong and we end up with a chimney collapse in the kitchen. It will get done though as it was one of the things added to the list right at the start of moving here. It will make the kitchen feel huge. This is also where the range will go. Recessed back into the chimney. Fingers crossed.
There are only two walls remaining and not sure you could call them walls. The best we can do it to remove the massive fallen oak tree off it and try to stabilise it. But the tree may be doing it a favour too by adding downward weight to the stones. It will just be nice to stop it all from falling down. That one we think is super old as it doesn't exist on any maps, old or new.

Yeah, a giant tree and then some. I think the previous video shows me standing in the trunk of where the tree stood. I am not the largest of men in the world but the tree must have been quite something.
Oooh no, we couldn't take it down, it is old. We like old. They are lovely stones though.
We can't wait for it to all come together at some point, not sure how long it will be, but there is no rush :-)
