  • Welcome to our channel where we document the renovation progress of our charming Irish farmhouse and homestead. In this episode, we finally have to say goodbye to the dangerous Stanley 8 range that has been a staple in our kitchen for years.
    When we moved to Ireland in June, the chimney was swept and the Stanley 8 range cleaned and patched up as much as possible. For the last eight months it has been lit each day, served well, but sadly it has finally become far too dangerous to use.
    In this video, join us as we tackle the removal of the now dangerous Stanley 8 range in our Irish farmhouse renovation and homestead project. Follow along as we carefully dismantle and dispose of the old, and outdated range to make way for a safer and more efficient solution.
    Being complete beginners at farmhouse renovation, really needing a "homesteading for beginners" guide and now starting amateur archaeology, we are taking it slowly, enjoying everything we do no matter how hard it is, to one day realise our dream of running a fully functioning homestead from our once derelict Irish Farmhouse.

    Oh my gosh! Just thinking about you burning fuel in that while you slept in the same room gives me the chills. Glad you got rid of that thing. I can visualize a wood burner setting in the old fireplace giving off a warm glow on a cold winters night while sitting with a hit cup of coffee.

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  5 місяців тому

      Ooh it does me too! I had a love hate relationship with it. Loved it for the wonderful heat it gave, especially over the winter…but wow the fear of going to sleep at night and not waking up in the morning! Not great! I’m not unhappy for that reason to see it out of the kitchen. 🫣 I like your vision…that sounds perfect to me, but I swap the coffee for a nice cup of tea! Haha

    Well done guys in removing the old stove. Really interesting to see how it was 'plumbed' in. Had to do something similar years ago in my own house. Hopefully the brick arch has a nice iron support bar under it and that you'll be able to access the whole space behind to eventually put in a new Stanley. Meanwhile the woodburning stove will keep you cosy! Great video as always. Kxx

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  5 місяців тому +1

      Thank you Kate, it was time it went and eventually will indeed have a Stanley or other manufacturer in there, but a Stanley if preferable.
      At the moment we are completely uncertain of what we will find behind the bricked up fireplace and maybe a job for the summer when we don't need the heat. A supporting bar would be nice but being an arch, in theory, should support itself, but we will see.
      Thank you as always. Have a lovely Easter :-)

      @thecornerhouseproject  5 місяців тому +3

      YIKES indeed. It served us well but now I think it just wants to kill us, so outside it has to go haha.
      We like the idea of a potting bench and maybe if we still have it when we have finally sorted out spaces (one day) we could do. An outdoor fire would be nice but we would have to pretend it is a BBQ as you pretty much can't burn anything outside now since Jan 2023 :-(
      Yes, it wasn't in a good state but did us proud through winter and we are still here to tell the tale.
      Hahaha, yes, can you imagine our excitement as we don't hide it very well.. We can't believe people have and do Buy Us A Coffee, we would feel like we had won the lottery if everyone bought one hahaha.

    Wow - I'm so glad you got rid of that stove now that you've shown how dangerous it was. Well now whatever replaces it will be safer and cleaner and will even look nicer to give the room a lovely lift. Of course down the road it will be fun to watch the dismantling of the cement wall and reveal of fireplace but that's in the future haha, for now you've got a few other tasks you're working on. Also, so glad you guys took care not to hurt your backs when moving the stove. Curious, when the front door is open, are the furball angels on their leashes and tied inside the living room? I know only Alan loves to go outside but not without his leash.

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  5 місяців тому +1

      Good morning Tracy, how are you doing all the way over there? The sun is shining here.... I know, it really is!
      It was far to dangerous in the end to risk using it, so it had to go. We knew it was in bad condition hence all the smoke and monoxide detectors but once it poured smoke out the back, it was time to go.
      The chimney will be a great project and we are looking forward to it. BUT, what we thought would be in the hole, a big open space, isn't the case, so it will be a "see how it goes" job. A bit like everything new we do. It is still an exciting thought though to have it open again and then in the future a range in it :-)
      The cats have the run of the house and it is only when we need the back kitchen door open we shut the door to the hall. They just go and find somewhere to sleep until we open the door again. We never put them on their leads unless they are going for a walk, which as you say, only Alan is bothered really. On a whole, the front door is never open now but Alan and Steve would soon be out if we didn't keep an eye on them. They magically appear from nowhere.
      Thank you so much for always watching and commenting and hope you have a lovely weekend :-)

    What a wonderful way to spend a Thursday and/or a Friday??!!You both did an awesome job getting the range/cooker dismantled and moved out the kitchen door! I was amazed at the rust and holes that were at the back of the range. It was really heavy to boot. Guess all that digging has made your arms very, very strong. Imagine what it would have been like if you didn't have the strength from all of the digging. Was a nice change from the outside work on the pile of soil that will still be there when you are ready to tackle it again. Once more, thanks for taking us with you on the journey to renovate your home! Take care and Happy holiday. See you both on Monday for more outside digging??!!!

      This was a Thursday job, just before is got cold, typical. Yes, if we had known the rust patches were there and getting so thin we would have patched them up, but, we are still here to tell the tale thankfully.

    That looks like it could be an anchor for a battleship!
    You were fortunate to have not had a chimney fire. The three generations before me were firefighters going back to the 1870s through to 1980 in a small city in New Brunswick, Canada. Wood and coal were the predominant heating fuels. My father told me that chimney fires were very common up to the end of the 1940s because of the build up of creosote and lack of proper cleaning.
    Looking forward to you having a modern upgrade.

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  5 місяців тому +1

      We think it was the anchor and that is why it was so rusty haha.
      The first thing we did in May when we came to start clearing the house was to get the chimneys swept as we planned to use all four when we moved over in June. It was then we found that only the kitchen was an open chimney and the rest had been sealed. But he swept right up to the blockages. So we felt comfortable using the range in the kitchen. I do remember though, as a child, my parents boiler had a chimney fire when we were away on holiday and the neighbour looking after the house kindly lit the boiler so we had hot water on our return. We found out that the chimney had caught fire and the fire brigade had been out to put it out. Luckily the stove was on the outside of the house in a side building so no smoke went in the house.
      An upgraded range is exciting as it will do the radiators and water, so in effect, free heating and hot water as it will be on anyway for heat in the kitchen. Not sure of the total costs of all of this though with a plumber etc so best I start making new friends (with plumbers) hahaha.
      Thank you John, have a lovely Easter :-)

    Dawn, I so love you you lady.. Ben great work buddy. The installation of all these types of stoves, cast iron ovens has always been totally dependent on the guys doing the installation being consciences and professional, given that the most important part of the flue pipe connections are never going to be seen once the stove/cooker is pushed back into place. Thank feck that you both had the good sense to use monoxide detectors whilst you slept in that room. I’ve lost 3 childhood friends due to them breathing in carbon monoxide gases. Never, never trust these appliances, without you having the carbon gas detectors installed.

    I don’t know how u keep going there. But a wood burning stove will be more efficient and u can heat a kettle on them as well. For moving heavy items like that get a three bits of steel pipe about 2ft long and 2inch in diameter. Real handy to have about. For me I’m make entrance gates for the house to keep the children of the road this weekend and them as soon as our wet water logged feild is dry we will be putting in a lawn. So all go here too. What a great idea for moving the range…wish we’d thought of that when we move it! Wow, they are heavy! Ooh lovely with the gates…that’s something we need to do too. Another thing added to the list! Are you making wooden gates? Could be a while for the water logging if it’s anything like ours. We were talking to the farmer earlier on and he was saying about how bad it has been this last year for how much water in the fields at the moment. Felt quite bad kicking it but after manhandling it we couldn’t muster the energy to move it another centimetre to drop the side 😂

    Certainly was knackered. I think every old place in Ireland had a Stanley 8 Cooker. Our last renovation in Co Limerick had one with back boiler. Gave it away. Pretty old and knackered. Used it for a bit and replaced it with a used £50 Parkray 88 inset boiler stove and became the living room fireplace. Chimney/fireplace was not old, all concrete block.

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  5 місяців тому

      You may have a really good point there Catherine with the square piece. I will have a look to see if it can be used as that would make life easier.
      We aren't sure what will happen to it yet. Until we are brave enough to move it again it can stay there for now haha.

    I’d put it right out the back door to the side and now you have a backyard bbq! 😂 I’m so glad that it got you through the winter, but I’m even happier to see you guys replace it with a newer safer option. 💚

      It did indeed go right out by the back door lol and it would make a great hot plate for grilling....maybe. One person we know used to do his toast on the top of the plate when they were kids. I think it may have been a common thing but I could be wrong. I tried it on ours.... it was more of a burnt bread than toast hahaha.
      We are pleased that it isn't in use anymore after it went to completely unsafe. A stove will do for now until we can get a new/refurbished range, water tank and a plumber.
      Thank you as always and have a lovely Easter. Don't eat too many eggs :-)

    You will get a few quid for that if you sell it to the scrapman. The money can also go into the new range fund. If that handle/rail going all the way across the front of it is brass, I would be keeping that to hang oven gloves, tea towels. etc. Like your style Dawn, if it wont move nicely, kick it! Lol

      Sadly it is just a steel tube which was chrome at the start of it's life. We will keep the tube though as you never know when you might be able to use it, as you say, for gloves, towels etc.

      a restoration would be a hell of a lot of money, i assume. not everyone has the money for such things, especially not in the middle of rebuilding a good lot of a house… not arguing, just saying…

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  5 місяців тому +2

      Thanks Nicholas. Sadly, to have this range reconditioned would cost more than buying a refurbished one. Every part of the range was twisted, warped or rusted through. If we had the money we may have considered getting it fully refurbished so it could stay in the house another 60-80 years. We also need a range with a back boiler for heating and hot water so that ruled this one out too.
      Thanks for watching and commenting. Have a nice Easter.

    Wow! That looked ridiculously heavy. You were smart having carbon monoxide detectors, however, your house at first was drafty, which is a blessing with the amount of black trail on the wall. Thank goodness it held on long enough for you to insulate the house and for Spring. I am excited to see what you find behind that wall. Sometimes, the pushed all the cast iron inside it before the bricked it up. So what you gonna do with the old one. I’ve seen them used in gardens as a plant feature. Have a wonderful weekend and Happy Easter.

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  5 місяців тому +1

      Hello Dory, how are you today?
      Oh yes, always had the carbon monoxide testers and smoke alarms, even the little caravan e had had two of them. But yes, the draughty house will have helped, the chimney certainly has a lot of suck on it which is always a good thing.
      It was if it knew we needed it through the winter and did us proud. Then it just completely gave up, not long after the first day of Spring.
      We are looking forward to opening up the fireplace. It is something we knew we wanted to do as soon as we saw it. We have no clue how long it will take us to do or when we will start it, but it will get done.
      What will we do with it?..... Commenters have suggested using it as a planter, a BBQ, a meat and cheese smoker and a place just to burn stuff, but w really don't know. We may just scrap it because of it's weight but you never know with us. We say one thing and do something completely different lol.
      Thank you as always Dory. Enjoy Easter and don't work too hard :-)

    This is just so worth watching!! Always something going on. I am glad it is out of the house; it scared me when you said you wanted to keep it ages ago. Good job. I cannot believe you didn't have a fire in there. Very dangerous. It lasted I guess as long as it was supposed to so you could get into springtime. I will donate to the new stove as soon as I can get my bank to quit stopping payment on the buy me a coffee deal. No clue what that is all about. Anyway, good job getting it out of the house!!

      The fire hole itself was OK, until recently when the fire bricks started to fall out and there wasn't the smoke we experienced Tuesday night either so we knew it was time it had to go. It did do us proud and kept us going until Spring like you say, but we are happy it has gone from a safety point of view.
      Thank you very much, that is very nice of you.

    You are so lucky that your stove did not set the house on fire. How will you get rid of the stove? Do you have places where you can take the stove to be refurbished? Even though it was rotten the stove gave the kitchen an old nostalgic feel. A newer fireplace will be nice. There is nothing like a wood firer to keep warm by. The cracking wood firer and the dry heat is so nice.

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  5 місяців тому

      Hi Paul and Laura
      The fire was safely contained in the firebox and did it's job, The soot marks on the wall were from the opposite side of the range which didn't get hot, just slightly warm.
      We are not sure if we can get it collected yet and is something we will look into.
      A stove in a hold house does make it feel cosy so it will be replaced with an upgrade which will also heat the water and radiators around the house. In the mean time, a log stove will go in it's place for warmth.
      Thank you for watching and commenting.
      Have a nice Easter.

    Well the old girl gave up the ghost- its really a good thing you caught it when you did. Glad ya'll are safe and best to remove it. It got you through the worst of the winter and got ya going in the beginning, so it gave you all it had. Personally, I thought you were a bit bonkers to try to mend it. I say go forth and destroy 🤪😜, what is the worse that can happen, you have to rebuild it? Based on what you have found hidden so far, and your want to hook up a new one to piping for radiant heat, I say take it back now and have it ready for next winter. You need to have a good plan on how your running piping and that chimney box on the left will be in your way, best to open it now size up what you need, get your pipes in then close the top for flue for the temp one. I think you will have to line it anyways. You have the time now coming into spring summer where you are not so reliant on it. Now mind you I say this as I sit in A/C and only had the heat on one night all winter, where the concept of chimneys, flues, and fire inside is most likely a scented candle. So get counsel from some expert aka your chimney guy, other renovators of old Irish homes. It's your forever home, and you cannot make egg salad without breaking some eggs. Trying to get an Easter reference in. Hoping your coffee fund gets a big push now! Thanks for taking us along on your discoveries!😁 ps. old range not suitable for a BBQ

      Yeah she did 😔 I think she tried giving it up years ago but we did try to bring her back. Oh yes, will definitely open the chimney up, it’s something we’ve been dying to do from the beginning but other priorities like two floors needing to go in took priority lol oh and not freezing over winter too haha!
      Well done, very slickly done with the Easter reference! I agree with the bbq angle for the range, not sure it’s good for anything much really at its current state 😂

    I’ve installed hundreds of solid fuel cookers, stoves, log burners, multi fuel burners. Very, very few customers even knew of the importance of ventilation, air bricks as we call them. Even fewer were happy when told of the size air brick required when installing these appliances. In reality most of these installed appliances fail the safety requirements, sure, nothing better than a solid fuelled appliance keeping you warm on a bitter cold winters night… But I will never stop asking…Worth risking your life for, your children’s lives for ? Please Folks.. protect your family, make sure that all your solid fuel appliances are safe to be used.

    We have been heating with wood partially and totally for about 45 years. We have man handled quite a few heavy stoves in our time. My very favourite was a Findlay oval cook stove l bought at an auction. It was the main source of heating for almost 20 years. I cooked on and in it during the big ice storm we had in Kingston Ont in Jan 1998. We had no power or running water for 11 days. Living beside a lake was fortunate, we cut a hole in the ice and had water for filling the water tank on the stove, and flushing toilets. I was sad to see it go. As l write this lm sitting beside our present airtight, and there’s nothing nicer for making a space cosy.

      Wow! 11days with now power! That’s handy with the lake, we’re not far from a lake but I can’t imagine it freezes quite so hard as Canada here in Ireland!
      Looking forward to getting another range because I’ve yet to be able to cook on one as the one that just got taken out only heated up on the one side, but after seeing the big hole in the back I can tell why!

I would imagine there is a huge openfire space. Our old fireplace was completely filled with cement and concrete blocks, but we were able to remove enough to sit the little wood burner inside. It gives you so much more space in the room to have it flush with the wall. Exciting times!

    Great video Dawn and Ben, I have to be honest I am so glad you managed to get range out because when I first saw it way back in June I thought you needed to get it out, so when you started using it it worried the life out of me. However - now it is out of the house is there anyway you could use as a smoker to smoke meat, cheese etc.
    I hope you haven't had the horrendous weather there as we have had here, the rain has been bad but the winds been gale force. Stay safe love to you both xxxx

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  5 місяців тому

      We kept a close eye on it from day one and was over kill with the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors on purpose as you can never be too safe, especially with an old range in that shape. But yes, it has gone now and hopefully the weather won't get too cold.
      A smoker is a great idea but it is possible for meat the oven section wouldn't get hot enough, I think we had a max temp of 100 degrees C in there at one point but maybe cheese. That will be another Google session.... "Smoking cheese in a smoker" :-)
      It has been very wet, as you will have seen and talking to famer neighbour today it isn't usual. He was saying everywhere is so wet and he hasn't seen some of his land this wet before. So there is hope for our land yet. We haven't had any winds of late really, a few blowy nights but no storms. Hopefully yours will improve soon.
      Have a lovely bank holiday and thank you Kim :-)

    There is an Aga place in Ireland, I wonder if you could get a new/refurbished one through financing/payment plan with install by them. It's worth a look to see what is possible or not with the layout of your kitchen and the chimney. I wouldn't open any of the fireplace until I know how a replacement will need to be fitted. Then choose the replacement - set up a goal bar for the cost to raise the money for "Dawn's new Aga Fund". The one you took out was a good 70 years old (or more) and was not well maintained over the past 30 years, It served well - Good Old Stove!! Sad to see it go but it's definitely beyond repair (or is it - aga would know if they would take it as a trade in). Just put a little money where my mouth is lol

      Good afternoon Janie, how are you on this Easter weekend?
      We are liking the idea of the Stanley make as it is an Irish company, still assembled in Ireland but the frames now cast in the UK. Waterford Stanley has been part of the Middleby Corporation since 2015 and I think they also own Aga too. So that aside, it would keep a Stanley range in the house. We will need a back boiler model capable of plenty of radiators and it will also heat the running water too.
      The fireplace "just" needs to be opened back up to it's pre range days. You then flue liner it, and seal the rest of the hole just above the arch. Once the flue liner is in place you connect the range and plumbing etc. The fireplace opening though won't be for a while and for when we are feeling brave hahaha and it is warm enough to remove whatever wood stove we put there as a temporary replacement.
      Our New/Refurb range fund is on Buy Me A Coffee and people have been supporting us via there for it. A long way to go before we can afford one, even with everyone's support but people have been so supportive already :-)
      Yeah we are guessing 60 - 80 years and the last 20 have been in a cold damp kitchen so it has done so well for us since June, it could have been completely beyond use (which it probably was) or died in the middle of winter so we were lucky.
      It is sad to see it go but safety in this case was a clear winner lol.
      Thank you as always Janie, have a lovely Easter weekend :-) See you Monday

    That looks like it was a big open fire , up to the brick arch. They used to have a big grate and a crane arm to hang pots over the flames. You could of looked straight the chimney at the sky. Then, at a later stage, they concreted it up and made the chimney smaller for the range.

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  5 місяців тому

      Yeah we’re very excited to get that opened to see its full size. The plan is to open it up and get a range maybe recessed into the opening. We have found old pots as we’ve cleared the land and outbuildings and bits of what maybe look like they could have been parts of the original crane, but not a 100% sure.

    We had a coal stove in the kitchen that was taken out and the chiminy sealed when i was a kid.Years later they unsealed the chimney for a gas hot water heater twas plugged solid so they took off the ole tin cap on the chiminey were the ole stove hooked into it in the kitchen to check what was wrong.Any way the guy went up and threw a brick down the chimney when he did that all the soot shot out the stove hole into the kitchin and livin room.Lol the ole doll me granny was covered head to toe in soot me as well she screamed then started laughin went an had a shot of rum. She and i looked like we cut coal all week lol it was funny.We then started to clean for two days so thats how much soot can be in an ole chimney ,and ya wonder why there was chimney fires eh....

      Hi Billy, thank you for watching and commenting with such a great story from your past.
      We are hoping that it won't turn into a career trying to open the fireplace back up but it will certainly be done carefully and slowly.
      When the chimneysweep came, he removed 3 old dead crows, a load of old bird bones and hundreds of twigs from the crows. I am sure these would have caused a lovely chimney fire if it wasn't swept professionally first.
      I can just imagine your Grans face, NOT IMPRESSED to start with before the funny side was seen and of course the shot of rum will have helped hahaha.
      Thank you again :-)
      Have a nice Easter.

      We will have to see if anyone would take it for scrap. Not sure of things like that just yet. Someone may be able to refurbish it but we’re not sure if it’s too far gone for that. Fingers crossed for a replacement. We will see if we can pick up and secondhand stove for the mean time just for heat, until we can be at a point to get a range with a back boiler and for that we need a water and radiators so could be a little while yet. All the best to you too!

    That was a mammoth task for you both to remove the Stanley but it had to be done. Would you be able to install a Rayburn/Aga at a later stage? A roast lunch in a Rayburn has a taste of its very own.

      Good evening Miriam
      You are right but sadly it did have to be done but it became very obvious that it needed to stop being used.
      We are saving for probably another Stanley but with a back boiler so it can do both water and radiators. We feel with that with the radiators installed the house will be cosy everywhere.
      We have been told that cooking in a range is a much different flavour and quality than a conventional oven. We are looking forward to it one day.
      Thank you for watching and commenting. Have a lovely Easter :-)

    Wondering if you would consider letting me have the doors, the rectangular hotplate (that has 2 big holes in it) and the damper that turns, for my Stanley range ? Would really appreciate it. I don't know whereabouts you are, I'm in Co. Clare. 🙂

    Sometimes these old style ranger’s are refurbished
    If the company is still producing this type of range Is it AGA/Rayburn ? It may be worth investigating and cost effective to reuse it and keep the history going 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️
    There again scrap it and get a better type of log burner

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  5 місяців тому +1

      Hi HolyMoly :-)
      We looked into getting it refurbished but by the time everything was repaired or replaced we basically would end up with a brand new range for the same or more of the price of a new one, the make and model is the Stanley 8 range. Scrap or repurpose will be it's next step. We do however want a Stanley range to replace it to at least keep some history of it.
      Thank you for watching and commenting with a good suggestion :-)

      Sadly, to have this range reconditioned would cost more than buying a refurbished one. Every part of the range was twisted, warped or rusted through. If we had the money we may have considered getting it fully refurbished so it could stay in the house another 60-80 years. We also need a range with a back boiler for heating and hot water so that ruled this one out too.
