- We're back with some more Street Fighter 3: Third Strike! Hugo in 3s is generally considered a low tier character, but in the right hands he can really deliver some pain! His command throws, combos, and long range pokes are adept at controlling space, and my opponent in this video, Neem, is a tournament player who can really use this command throw character to his max potential. Cracked Hugos are the most insane of the low-tier mains. A cracked Sean can put in work, but a cracked Hugo will demolish your bloodline if given the opportunity.
I mean that’s cuz Hugo is like infinitely better than Sean. I’d go so far as to say he’s not even straight low tier, just mid tier/low mid tier

@@LarsgmanI can see him being low tier for specifically 3rd strike gods who will parry him since his buttons are a bit slow.
The thing about 3S is that it’s one of the only games where simply just having stupid damage can make you viable, because of how parry makes punishes way more common. Hugo is basically only viable because if he parries you you just fucking explode instantly.
That all depends on how good your parry and input game is

I think it was Bafael that mentioned that having a good punish game will make or break a character in 3S because of the parry system. Even though Hugo has lots of faults that keep him in low tier, he's ultimately a viable character because it takes one good read to melt your opponent's life bar. The fact that Kuroda and Hayao were famous for being top level players using low tier characters is testament to that philosophy.

I just like how weirdly jiggly Hugo is. Like whenever he returns to idle from just about anything there's this weird jiggle in his animation like he's fighting back against his own force just to return to a neutral state.

Clap is so plus that it makes parrying it vs blocking it a total mind game. If you parry and Hugo has meter, you have to decide weather or not the Hugo will 720 on you, but if you block you've got a 2nd guessing game between micro walk 720, meat squish, more claps, standing MP/cr. MK. ...Kinda gotta pick your poison I guess. ...Also, it's Andre the Giant that's the Frenchman- so you were meta-correct, lol.
Hugo is massively underrated and super fun. He needs to return in SF6.

It is like they say. Rushdown counters themselves against Grapplers, because the thing they want the most, get in, is literally doing the grappler's job for them.
It's complicated. Grapplers do want to get in to threaten with their grabs, but they tend to lack good defensive options. If they're being rushed down, their only good tool is their grab. You can rush down a grappler, and it can work extremely well, but it's an extremely high-risk play. But then again, what *isn't* a high risk play against someone who can win a set off a couple reads?
Neem is our guy on FC, the other week he started running a stream event where he would just give 5 bucks to anyone who could beat him FT3. I don't know if he lost any money for that first stream lol

SF3 Hugo is the character that got me into traditional fighters after playing Melee for several years. It was just way too damn fun to get huge reads for big damage. I wasn't even parrying or playing correctly, just enjoying the big gorilla grappler gameplay
I wonder if this is phenomena among Smashers gravitating toward grapplers in traditional fighters. I definitely am this way too. Perhaps because of grabs being so important in Smash.

I randomly got into ultra street fighter 4 some months ago after years of just casually playing mortal kombat an injustice. I don't know what's in hugo but he's my absolute favorite and i really want him in SF6 😭

Instantly fell in love with using hugo in 3s. I sometimes like to use grapplers in fighting games but most of the time i have to get past their aesthetics and design to be able to enjoy them, but with hugo i never had that problem.
Also landing his gigas off a parry is so satisfying

Topic suggestion: I think you should make a video series breaking down and learning a SFA3 V-ISM full combo, any character.
SFA3 is the best street fighter game in my opinion. Its the epyt9me of the fast 2d aprite style. And has the best version of every character. I wish it would have kept going this way.
I dont like SF4 and SF5.
Hugo being "low tier" has always seemed to me like a relic of old tierlists made back in the early 2000's. Hugo played at the highest level is a real threat. I'd say he is, at least, on par with mid tiers like Alex and Ryu.

can you recommend any specific strategies to anyone learning urien?
@@limmynade Combos/setups are the icing on the cake, but your base will always be neutral/fundamentals. Prioritize spacing. use MP, MK, cr.MK as your keepaway buttons. fw.MP and LP for anti-air, and do as much MP and HP in the open for meter gain. Look up matches played by RB, RX, Anago, Kuroda and learn their habits in neutral. Watch the Leaving Mongolia series by FrankieBFG featuring DrSteelHammer for a comprehensive Urien tutorial

@@limmynade there's a great Steel Hammer pdf document out there, too. Includes info on most damaging combos, mid screen and corner, and character specific combos/strategies.
Man one of the things I appreciate about you as a player is the way you talk through what you're trying to do ("What if I do/don't do this", "I thought that would work") and acknowledge your small victories, like taking the one round out of the 5 match set. It's something I struggle to do as I play, to think about what's happening and why, and to acknowledge the small victories in what's otherwise a pile of losses. I admire you for it, and I hope it's a quality I can work on in myself.
Good to see someone stomping with him. He's the character I find the most interesting in this game by a long shot.
If you want to see a *SCARY* Hugo, look up Japanese player Hayao. He is the best Gigas Breaker Hugo and is a parry machine.
Honorable mention is another Japanese Hugo named YSB who uses Hammer Mountain as his Super Art.

I think hands down the bigest reson hugo still even works aside many resons in sf3 is the fact he is a grapler in a game where parryng is king .cant parry grabs
it's twofold as well, zoning tools are worse in 3s because of parrying, so it's harder to keep grapplers out in general.

I've been saying it for years. Hugo is STRONG
I remember an SF4 tournament where Infiltration picked Hugo against Snake Eyes' Zangief in Grand Finals, I presume just for fun. Infiltration was known for playing a lot of different characters and counterpicking a lot, but I'd never seen him play Hugo and I don't think that's really a counterpick. Meanwhile Snake Eyes was THE Zangief main. It went on for the max number of games and Hugo won in the end.
Yo, you are being on point with these 3s videos. i started playing 3s Hugo on Fightcade about 2-3 weeks ago, and now im morally obliged to play the mirror everytime i run into another Hugo player XD. Most ppl say im solid with him but is too bad im on (solely) keyboard for times like this; 360+ are the most ackward inputs for me, so i cannot use them consistently on my gameplan and can´t either practice cause i lack free time at the moment.

ive been playing hugo a lot lately so i really appreciate this video.
I've played 3rd Strike for a long time, and eventually I got bored with always using Chun-Li, Akuma, and Sean. So I switched to Twelve, Elena, and Hugo just for the sake of variety. I don't normally play grapplers, but the parry system makes Hugo so damned good. Anyways, I'd love to see you play and/or take on a high level Twelve. Most players don't know how to play it, let alone the matchups. But there is some interesting tech that is worth looking into.

I never got super into 3rd Strike but I'd love to see you cover Remy. I never see or hear anyone play or talk about him. I think he is one of the coolest SF characters and underrated as far as deserving more than just being a budget Guile.

Was this poisons first appearance in a street fighter? As Hugo’s side chick? Also Hugo’s sprite in game really is a good example of how advanced the sprites were for this game during its time. The way his muscles, hair, facial expressions, and chain all move is extremely good for a game back then

I think this game should have had feints to counter parries. That way predicting a hit and parrying it would have been much harder. It would have been interesting.

ive been mastering hugo. dash in 720, 720 from standin lp or lk, 720 setups from the wall throw and hard knockdown hell even ive done in matches about 5 down parry 720s. its ridiculously fun. i cant tachi though i play keyboard

Idk who in their right mind doesnt know how strong Hugo is. He can stun you with just a few punishes and can super you 60 percent to death if you do something obvious.
He does huge damage but his entire gameplan is based purely off making reads and trying to get in. Against the better characters in the game he just struggles too much unless the Hugo player has his third eye open at all times, and even then that may not be enough.
He's a very fun character but he's low tier for a reason.
