One thing about the "Passionate players" is that i see often people saying "oh imagine how they would be with a top tier character" but to me it's their sheer motivation in extracting the best of the shit character (like pachikasu with sean on 3 strike, love him) that drives them to become so good, if they suddenly started playing a top tier that kind of motivation probably would not be there and they would be just decent at best.
@@PetterNe It was exageration yes, i did not mean to disrespect these players, i just tried to mean that they try harder playing the character they enjoy.
It's not that gen is bad he just has a high skill barrier which makes people not have the confidence to try and get better with him, this happens in a lot of other games too. The best characters often take the most skill to master and have the highest payoff if you're willing to put time and effort into getting better with them. It's because they often have great mix ups but are very technical thus require more skill and practice to play at the highest level which has more potential than more basic easy to use characters with less options available.
I picked up Gen because of Xian. It's such a fun character despite seeming a bit dry on the surface. You're always doing something, and stance-switch combos are fun to do even if most of them are unnecessary.
Same man ever since I saw Xian play him so masterfully I mained him. Loved the double stance combos you could pull off by switching from one stance to another. He was fun as hell to play 😎
Jibbo and Sabre were considered "specialists" back then. They even had a specialist tourney just to highlight all the unique characters that normally didn't place in tourneys.
The tech explanation with the pianoing and the sliding was absolutely ace, love the thoroughness of the content and the obvious joy for the game in every bit of it🔥
Its really not as bad once you get the muscle in, just tap 3-p/3-k immediately after you hit the normal you want to stance-dance from and continue linking. It is like playing two characters but the execution for most combos that were relevant and switching from a stance to the other were'nt the most difficult. Focus cancelling from hands into another combo was the toughest for me.
That's why Gen is the best, true stances!😄 His jump and walk speed are also quite different and used to be even more so, they nerfed his jump quite a bit over time. Stance change takes 1 frame where you cannot block :( Another trick for MK > Hands that is.. depressing is after people really started passing around "plink" techniques it was discovered Gen can just.. basically mash MK + MP + HP and get hands (FADC too) super easy. All those hours practicing piano and people can just roll their face on the buttons T.T
@@yahboyx nah not really ahahaha. He just played online ranked sometimes. And one of the characters he performed best with was Gen. Which as a main character, was pretty impressive.
I remember discovering Gen's ways in SF4 during the trials. I never knew you could combo into another stance. The stances were always cool, but Crane stance intimidated me.
I mostly used it as a way to screw with my opponent. Use Mantis stance first round, switch to Crane at the beginning of second and if there's a third switch back. I got an embarrassing amount of wins by just making it more difficult to learn how I played.
Hands down my fav SF4 character. He's difficult but has everything I like in a fg character. To this day I don't think I've found a character in any other game that clicked as well as Gen did.

5:15 I'm glad I'm not the only one who had to come up with this tech, for me it was for SF5 Blanka of all characters! The *only* option blanka has off of crouching medium kick that doesn't require charge and won't whiff is EX Electricity, and in SF5 you NEED a good hit confirm off of crouching medium kick or you just don't have neutral. Even after all this time, it's still a very physically uncomfortable tech to execute, too.
Gotta also show love to YEB who was also one of the first top level Gens from back there. Jibbo was the first I saw play a Japanese player, DAIGO, of all people and use Gen. Jibbo was also nasty in SFxT.
@jmcrofts You can do Gen's standing MK xx Heavy Hands with the piano method. I usually use my thumb and index finger to hit MK and LP at the same time and then continue on with the rest of the piano method. (MK+LP, HP, MP, LP, HP) You still get the 5 inputs required for hands and the MK takes priority over the LP. I was a Honda main in SF4 and this was the method that I used for CR.MK xx Hands
I always made the joke 1st playing him that this dude was from 'Da _actual_ Streets Throwing up "Gen" Signs, reppin' his set, mainly because I am so trash at SF4, I just randomly switch stances after every punch😂.
Gen is my favorite character in the series. SFA2 I played him. We need another character similar to him Zeku was a character I enjoyed in SF5. Hopefully ,they bring a dual-stance character like Gen or Zeku. I think Jamie has a second stance of sort after he drinks 4 times. Seems like some of his moves are different but nothing like Gen or Zeku.
I'm not a Gen player, but the input I use for strong into heavy hands is mp, hp, mp, lp, hp. And then one of his most useful combos is st mp linked into the hp, mk target combo cancelled into heavy hands.
Getting really good with a supposedly awful character is hilarious =D I love that, because most people are like 'how the f'k do I fight this?' They don't prepare for such rare opponents, because the chances of being up against one is so low.
I was a heavy Gen player back in SFA3. I'm not sure how his moves transferred over from pixel, but Gen's standing HK (Crane) was an incredibly strong counter move, same with FP. One of my greatest memories of playing Gen was pulling off a 80%~ combo with him. It required the super meter and ultra meter, where you did the super move where he dashes forward, then switch stances so you can do the ultra which is an anti air. The super barely lifts the target up in the air, but it had to be frame perfect. There was definitely a little more to the combo than what I said, but man does it hype you up when you execute it!
My favorite SF character. He is one of my mains in SF Alpha. Never got into SF4 because i just couldn't deal with the graphics so not sure how much similar he is but i love playing him.
I recommend watching Xiao Lon's gameplay. She is from KOF Maximum Impact Regulation A And she has an unique gameplay because she has *three fighting stances* where she can change during the match. Also, her special moves were good and her movility was excellent (she has the fastest teleport in the game) Xiao Lon was top 3 in the tier list, she is not easy to master but when you learn how to play as her, you will have a great time.
Gen, to me, represents an important part of the fighting game journey. The: "whoa i want to do THAT." Picking a few things like, waterfall kicks, or the target combo into hands, or super into ultra. TBh most of that stuff comes as you play ranked and have to adapt to people’s strategies. When you start off, all you rly need are some good pokes and anti airs, and a bnb combo. The rest will sink in the more you play
I always liked old masters, and I kinda just picked up Gen and mained him in Alpha 2 and in SFIV. Gen is the king of pokes and confusing crossup divekicks. I love it. I'm not good at him at all, but I still love him :D
My question has always been: if a character has multiple attacks that do the same thing, why would you use any other than the one with the least startup and end frames? Uppercuts for example, or pokes. Seems like 75% of a typical fighting game's moveset is just there for variety and don't have much use outside of looking flashy.
I have soft spot for USF 4, the game that introduces me to watch FG tournament. 10 years later this game still looking so good regardless of the release of SF6
Gen started in SFA3 (after SF1, of course). Back then, literally _nobody_ played Gen, and I'm not even sure what a top-tier Gen would look like. Another thing about Gen were _chain combos,_ which few other characters had back then (only Guy and Cody I think.) He could chain off his overhead, which was neat.
I remember doing off the wall kick into mantis super into crane ultra just playing random characters with friends and the group I was hanging with went wild
People who weren't into Street Fighter back then should google some of Xian's matches with Gen - he made it to the highest levels of competition with a super unorthodox and execution-heavy character!
I've loved Gen's characters since SF1, I even bought the SOTA figure but yeah I couldn't use him very well except for X-ism in Alpha 3. The simplified version had less options but man it was easier to use him. I didn't have as many problems with Zeku!
Gen is so difficult to play but I gotta say I think viper is a bit more difficult. Messing up one jump cancel can end so terribly and the execution of her advanced stuff is crazy but she also has crazy utility like meterless fadc combos
Viper has get off me options that made her feel extra cheap in neutral though compared to gen, gen really sucks if you knock him down but you do probably punish viper way harder if they mess stuff up, but the cieling is way higher for gen, viper worked online gen didn't
One of the reasons Japan has a lot of weird "one-tricks" for even low tier characters is that there isn't much money in Japanese eSports due to the country's gambling laws which consider playing in a tournament for a prize pool gambling for money. This means that basically every Japanese eSports player has to do it for the passion and prestige because you can only make a career from competitive gaming in Japan from sponsorships and joining an eSports team.
I'm curious, for those who played Gen, how is this different from playing a character like Zeku? I know Zeku doesn't switch between motion and charge but each form has a complete different move set as well as properties on the normals.
They are pretty much the same I think in terms of niche. Gen is just more complicated cuz he has different supers and ultras for each stance, charge moves and mash moves. Add that with how more difficult combos are in sf4 then Gen can be a pretty difficult character to be good with.
@@nybethobdilord6912 it's really because he has a shitload of moves that leave him plus on block by virtue of having a shitload of moves, what makes him so hard is that you have to switch stances mid string which turns most of his strings in to one or two frame links, and they don't do that much damage you just have to block forever

@@nybethobdilord6912 it's really because he has a shitload of moves that leave him plus on block by virtue of having a shitload of moves, what makes him so hard is that you have to switch stances mid string which turns most of his strings in to one or two frame links, and they don't do that much damage you just have to block forever
He was my main in Alpha 2 Gold , man i would go crazy if they added him to SF6.
Way more content like this man. Usf4 matches and characters!! Let's do viper and fuerte! Get latif on here, he loves his community! Or Abel with strider as the player
Gen is a highly technical character. I've been using him for years whenever I do play Street fighter 4. My roommate before he was murdered mained Gen so I learned Gen as a pocket character to counter him. You really have to think on your feet to use Gen.
I'm sorry for your loss
"Not just the normals, but the especials and character type too".
Gen and Ibuki were my two mains in 4. Made a lot of people upset
It’d probably never happen but I’d love to see him play the inuyasha fighting game
I loved playing gen online so much fun to use
Have u ever played with Gen back in SFA2 or 3?
I got hit by his wack infinite in ranked once, from that point on every time i played against a gen i got flashbacks. its terrifying.
I would love more of this
