It's totally okay if the sequel doesn't live up to the expectations of its predecessor. If I come out with a smile on my face, that's honestly good enough for me. 🙂
This is one of those rare instances when the sequel is on the same level as the original. Michael Keaton played both Batman and Beetlejuice in the span of a year, and he still has it.
I'm a big Tim Burton fan, and even though Beetlejuice isn't my favorite Burton film, I'm really excited to see Burton go back to his smaller scale, gothic film roots.
crazy how i thought this exactly too. I felt like there was too much going on but i still love it, maybe because i grew up with the movie and have it as one of my favorites so i have that bias. I hope they make a third one with less plot lines.
michael keaton didn't want to over due it with beetlejuice in this film.if I remember correctly he said he had like 17 mins of film time in the last one and he wanted around the same time with this one and not over due it
Exactly. Very scatterbrained. They had a bunch of subplots and unnecessary characters. At the end of the film, they were rushing around to resolve all of the subplots. The Maitlands were quickly brushed away.
Saw this movie earlier today in a private screening, and it was great. The humor is still awesome, and more mature than I remember. It was a bit of a slow start but that’s my only complaint. Taco and Bob are the goats of the movie hands down🙏. Solid B+ sequel
this movie was so much fun, Michael Keaton still has it, Jenna Ortega fits right in as Astrid, Catherine fits back in as if she's been playing Delia her whole life, i loved how Willem Dafoe was just having the time of his life in this movie and yeah the ending is wild and kinda out there but I liked it cause it's meant to be left off for if they do a Beetlejuice 3
Just came back from watching it and I really like it. It was a lot of fun all the actors were great Michael Keaton especially. It was funny, the practical effects and stop motion were great it was a really solid sequel.
It was...okay, I think had they cut all the new characters, minus Ortega, and just had those stories, it would've worked better. Too many useless subplots and we barely get any Lydia/Beetlejuice time.
I was shocked.. it was a great movie to watch. Plot was perfect.. only complaint was the wedding song..but other than that..i would buy it and watch it many more times. Great movie.
1:44, Actually, according to Notalgia Critic, Minty Comedic Arts and James A. Janisse (from Dead Meat), they said he only appeared in the Film for only 17 in a half-ish Minutes, but I'm sure it doesn't really matter.
The ending sucks. It should be your climax but it was a dud. I don’t if Burton blew all of his budget before they shot the ending or what. The movie accelerates and defangs beetle juices main concern with ease. Nothing compelling about that
I seen it last night at an early screening. It’s actually posted to my stories on IG. I liked it. The story, returning characters and everything brought me back to being a kid.
I freaking loved this movie. Yes it’s not on par with the original but it’s definitely a solid sequel and just made me laugh and smile and have a great time
Great breakdown / review. I had the same response. A hell of a fun time and I want to see it again- but man it is stuffed stuffed stuffed with subplots that bounce around like ping pong. Overall - amazing Fall/Halloween atmosphere and Burton and the cast are having a blast with this wild nonsense. 👍🏻
I'm happy to hear you articulate the slight mess of having 3 different antagonists. It's probably the one actual issue I have from watching the movie. I liked the other two villains, but their screen time ultimately left me feeling like they got rushed off after a nice introduction. If you count the potential step father, we have 4 antagonists, but at least he gets plenty of screen time and a funny send off.
I would have removed the Charles, Rory, and Delores characters completely. Lydia would still have her show, but she would be like really into it to the point where she would be recklessly ghost hunting and signing autographs and living it up - which would still annoy and infuriate Astrid. I see Lydia turning out more like an Owens or one of the Aunts [practical magic]. I would have centered the entire movie around that boy taking Astrid to the underworld and Lydia and Delia having to call on Beetlejuice to help. There's an entire movie right there. Everything else was absolutely unnecessary.
Just saw it and I completely agree with you. I thought it was a lot of fun. The acting was great, but it has some pacing issues. I feel like some scenes drag on too long and not every plot line is given a satisfying conclusion and the movie does kind of in anti-climactic, but still a lot of fun and worth seeing!
As the self proclaimed number one Beetlejuice fan, this was a great sequel! The ones who grew up with the original will enjoy this thoroughly! My theater was cracking up the whole movie.
I saw this movie today. I absolutely loved it. I don’t care what anyone says. I had the same experience in the movie theater Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice.
I find it funny you gave it B’s across the board. I saw it when I was in teens and found it to be a good time and glad it’s still a good time. Keaton killing it, no pun intended. I still have my hat from the first movie with my name on it when I first went to original in theaters. I just feel they have to have a third movie to tie everything together. I wonder what they’re going to call it? I got it Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. It writes itself.
Yes, none of the storylines wrapped up to a satisfying conclusion. The song scene was way too long at the end and to me was just a worse version of the first one. I did not like William Defoe in this movie. I thought it was cheese I’m pretty much pointless
What a laugh it is, a fun and round film, very well made... and the great ending with the music from the first film "Carrie" from the 70s, the music they play when Carrie's friend dreams at the end
Keaton was awesome as usual, Defoe was awesome and far as the rest they were just okay. It was so slow in the beginning I almost left, but I wanted to see what happened. For me it didnt live up to the original.
Love your grading system. I feel like it's the most reliable one according to my personal tastes. It's genius to look at it from 3 different viewer perspectives. Watching this, I'm confident this is a movie I would enjoy, even if it's not a mind blowing new experience
Although I don't have the nostalgia for the original since I didn't really grow up with it (I only watched it in its entirety for the first time last year), but I still really enjoyed it. My main issues are, like you said, Monica Belluci not having as much to do as it we're lead to believe and it kinda boiling down to another wedding sequence for the finale, but in all honesty, I still had a blast. I felt it expanded the world nicely, has amazing style (the first from Burton in a good while), and had some good character atcs. Maybe it could've been another 15 - 20 mins to give everything more room to breathe, but overall I felt it was more or less an good length for the movie. If they do ever do a Beetlejuice 3, I hope it's when they have a great story they're all passionate about, but for now I just hope Burton is able to carry the energy and creativity he felt working on this movie onto future projects because I honestly can't stand to see him backslide into that Alice in Wonderland type of filmaking some of his modern movies have taken on.
I think you might've had a headache the day you watched it because this movie is a 10/10 A++++ must own on DVD and VHS blu ray and cassette tape I'm going to let this slide because your 3c films the goat
Just got back from the Theater and I agree with everything you said. The movie has some serious pacing issues in the beginning. There is a lot of plots in this movie that doesn't get fully fleshed out. Michael Keaton and Catherine O'Hara absolutely killed it in this movie. Those two had me laughing many times throughout the movie. All in all I give this movie a solid 7.5/10.
I’m beyond excited to finally watch Beetlejuice 2 tomorrow as a huge fan of the original! Michael Keaton stole every scene he was in and his performance was legendary ! I’ve been waiting so long for this sequel and it feels surreal that again.. I’ll be finally watching this film soon ! I can’t wait to see what they bring to the table this time around.
Saw the movie last night & it’s pretty wild how my review is spot on to your review Chris. The first 30-40 minutes had me extremely worried, however it picked up and became quite enjoyable.
I was a huge beetlejuice fan and I absolutely loved beetlejuice beetlejuice. All the different ways they portray things (claymation, telenovela, sandworm) was absolutely incredible. I’m not a movie critic or very picky and I thought this movie was extremely fun

I completely agree with this review. A fun time but too many plots that get a rushed ending and an unsatisfying and kinda meh ending. The cast was great but there were too many of them! I also appreciated how it didn’t lean too much on the original to get “oohs” and “remember that?” moments that usually take me out of these legacy sequels.
Although I agree with much of what you say, none of it injected my enjoyment negatively and I found it incredibly satisfying but also leaving me wanting more which imho is not a bad thing because that just lets the mind wander and create my own ideas from it and that's something a lot of films that conclude too much often lose. Cinema needs to inspire more and both these films so they incredibly well for me. I gave it 5/5
I had so much fun with this film. I loved it. On par with the original and I’d love to see it again. The only nitpick for me is that the stitched up woman character could have had more to do I thought she’d be the big bad of the film and she kinda did nothing lol. I agree with everything you’ve said in this review.
Yeah, I saw a lot of other reviewers saying they really liked the first half of the film and disliked the second half. I'm a big Beetlejuice fan who saw the original as a kid in the late '80s and I agree with you. During the beginning of the film, I was afraid I was not going to like it at all. Something felt 'off' about it. I liked the second half for the most part other than the musical number at the end (which is why I'm thinking a lot of people are saying they dislike the second half). The ending did feel rushed, I'll also offer that as a criticism of the second half.
Almost walked out... I can recall liking 3 scenes.... Opening Spill guts End scene Big fan of first one.... Hence disappointed.... Low rental...for me....
I feel like you described it so well I thought the beginning was kind of boring too and isn't until like 30-40 mins in and picks up that it does start to get interesting overall I'd say if you have to see this in theaters go to an early showing other wise rent it
With the number of plot lines happening all at once, I think this would’ve been better if it was formatted as a tv show. This way, some of the characters like betelgeuse’s ex-wife and willem dafoe’s character get more screentime while allowing for better pacing.
God! I hate how they handled the Maitlands. An easy fix should have been, when Lydia went to college Charles had Barbara and Adam exorcised thus putting them in the lost souls room. The story goes exactly the same for Beetlejuice 2 except that Lydia has spent most of her life helping people with ghosts to cope with not being able to see Barbara and Adam. She has been mad at her dad all these years and now he is dead. The whole 2nd movie plays out the same except when Lydia goes into the afterlife she sees Barbara and Adam in the lost souls room and they have a moment of closure where they recognize each other and are able to let go. They could have easily CG’d Alex Baldwin and Gina Davis into the green ghosts hologram look from the first movie. This would have tied it better than “we found a loophole”
A couple things with that though is Lydia’s new personality and career, she was taken advantage of and even her mother calls her out saying where’s the goth girl that would torture me or something like that and telling her to find her again basically calling her out on the fact that she’s changed and again it’s all because of Roy. With the maitlands it’s pretty simple they moved on, they’re dead there’s decades for them to go we can do other things too they’re people they’re bound to getting tired of living in the same house with the same other people for decades no matter how much you love your alone time.
I still prefer Michael Keaton's return as Batman in the Flash over this one. But it was good to see Keaton return to the two movie roles that got him famous in the first place. (Unlike other actors. Harrison Ford, except Blade Runner 2049. That movie was great)
I saw this yesterday and had a pretty good time with it. I even took home the promotional fanta soda cup that had the characters on it. That said this movie was just as fun as the original.
I agree with your review about the first 30 mins kinda slow And I can see how they all can come back in a 3rd if they go that way and be just as good 👍

Felt like lazy writing
A couple things with that though is Lydia’s new personality and career, she was taken advantage of and even her mother calls her out saying where’s the goth girl that would torture me or something like that and telling her to find her again basically calling her out on the fact that she’s changed and again it’s all because of Roy. With the maitlands it’s pretty simple they moved on, they’re dead there’s decades for them to go we can do other things too they’re people they’re bound to getting tired of living in the same house with the same other people for decades no matter how much you love your alone time.
I don't think Tim burton wanted cg in his movie that much so he just went "eh write them off" and loophole
I've been a Beetlejuice fan since I was five! I'm a 1982 baby. I'm so stoked!
Beetlejuice is overpower!
I'm probably going to watch it this week or next week. Can't wait to see it
chris, i love you man i love youre content since the first dayt man keep it up
Honestly I thought it was terrible. Loved the first one.
Enjoyed it a lot! Nothing can be the original but they made a fun film 😊
I agree with your review about the first 30 mins kinda slow And I can see how they all can come back in a 3rd if they go that way and be just as good 👍
Just finished the movie and i completely agree with you
I just watched the first movie for the first time right before I watched the sequel and I was blown away cause I just found a newfound enjoyment for the first one then I had a blast with the sequel so I was really happy with how the sequel went
