In early 1972 my husband and I found ourselves facing an unplanned pregnancy. I had been a Democrat activist then and my husband was very liberal, too. The doctor told me I could fly to NYC on Friday after work and be back ready to give my classes on Monday morning. Even a relative I called told me I should have an abortion because my dad had suffered from epilepsy. I only remembered the bottle of medicine in the bathroom but my dad had never had a convulsion during my lifetime. Still, I knew the relative would not have lied to me and really thought she was looking out for me. She knew my husband, from El Salvador, did not have even US residency and his visa was about to expire. He was still studying and his job paid less than US minimum wage. My husband found me sobbing after the call with my relative. That Sunday I still went to help an elder of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church with confirmation class. I had forgotten, I guess, that Dean Dimmick would attend - the only time in the year - because the preteens would be confirmed the following Sunday. I am not sure but I think it was the first question. A preteen girl asked Dean Dimmick, “When does life begin?” Our jolly and humble but brilliant leader, a leader even of the other inner city religious leaders, chuckled before saying that, according to the Episcopal Church, life begins at conception. This month our amazing son will be 50. He has been an amazing son, a devoted husband and father who has had his boys’ college education paid for since they were small, a gentleman and a scholar as well as an excellent professional and provider. He is also a loyal friend and a man of honor. Give God a chance if you think there is no way you could afford to have a baby. Once I said no to abortion, everything else worked out. A dear friend let me live in a big house she, her husband, and graduate students, friends of theirs, were renting after my husband had to return to El Salvador. When our John was 10 months old, she helped me drive to Guatemala, where my husband met us. I have lived and worked as a teacher here in San Salvador since then, 1973. Neither of our children has had epilepsy. I was told I should “try again” as our daughter was about to be born two months early in 1978. Both our children are more brilliant than I or their father. El Salvador, as you may have noticed, means “The Savior”. Abortion here is still illegal. Maybe that’s why the current administration, their first week in control, was harassing its leaders.

I have health issues and was worried about being pregnant and having to work. A very wise woman told me "With every baby comes another loaf of bread." I ended up on bed rest at 16 wks. Everything worked out. I had a beautiful baby boy who is now 37 yrs. old and a wonderful son. My husband got a job after his training and I was able to stay home with my precious baby. I prayed and trusted in God.
And your story is the message all need to hear. Prolife only dwells on those who had an abortion. You and your son are a living testament to what prolife is. Thanks for sharing your story.

11/13/22 I saw your video for the first time. I am in my 60's, Father you are few that have spoken on abortion in a sermon. Fr James Altman was the first one. I am sure there are others. I was just wondering....I believe in all this stuff because it rings true. But more and more it's clear that human's exist to benefit a torture creator and that we have been fooled. Example: If most of us will be on the scrap heap of souls, why not seek satisfaction while we are here in material world? No matter how "good" we are likely to fail somehow. Jesus spoke of the eye of a needle. I can't fit through that. So why not just use this world and everything in it and do what we want anyway?So why not tap into the dark forces of the material world? They are the most powerful while we are here. Why care about later when most of us will be destroyed anyway? And for the chosen, how do they know the "God head" is better? You have to understand that slavery in Jesus' time was primarily in place as a way to aid those who were in desperate financial straights with no way of paying their debts. They were supported in their master's households with shelter and food. In return they provided their work. It was not the same system we saw in America, Europe and Africa.
