  • What is a human being? What happens when we die? Why do we visit cemeteries? And why do Catholics bury the dead instead of scattering their ashes?
    Today, Fr. Mike connects the dignity of the human person to the dignity of the body in death-and beyond.

    My wife and I will be cremated, and our ashes will be in a columbarium in a military cemetery. As Catholics, we consider that ground as consecrated. While I know that no one will visit our "graves", we will still be remembered. And as to scattering, I wouldn't do it, but in my heart I know that God can resurrect us regardless of what happened to our mortal bodies. Those souls lost at sea, those disintegrated by explosion, those of whom no trace can be found will still be raised up by the glory of God, for Whom nothing is impossible.

      Thank you for your service.
      Your military *pride* preceives your motive. The difference is, you are doing it on puopse. Not an accident. That you will be held accountable for. Military ground is not consecrated ground. Dont fool yourself. You belong resting in full body, in a Catholic cemetery.
      In your finale you have one option... to do God's Will, or Satan's free will.

      Why will you be cremated? Our bodies are Temples of the Holy Ghost. Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Orders, Matrimony, Holy Eucharist, Extreme Unction all have their indelible mark on your body to the very marrow of your bones. Cremation is a Masonic practice. Whatever happens to bodies by happenstance isn't usual, and yes God will bring us back to wholeness at the Resurrection, but why would you do that to a body which has died a natural death?

      Luke 16:19-31
      The Rich Man and Lazarus
      19 “There was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. 20 And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, 21 who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side.6 The rich man also died and was buried, 23 and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. 24 And he called out, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.’ 25 But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.’ 27 And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father’s house- 28 for I have five brothers-so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.’ 29 But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; ret them hear them.’ 30 And he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ 31 He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.’ ”

Long story short, my grandfather honored his request but when my grandmother died, he needed to sell the skeet range. I have no idea who owns the land now, but I think about that now how sad that is that a person is just spread there and mostly forgotten. And everyone involved had the best of intentions. Maybe that's my call to have a mass said for him and pray for him.

      You say you feel sad that a person is spread there and mostly forgotten....I hate to give you the bad news, but this is life, for most of us common people we are eventually forgotten no matter what happens to our remains. I have a great, great, grandfather, no idea who he was, no idea where he is buried etc. I don't need a gravesite to honor or appreciate someone who is clearly important to my existence. This is the fate of most of us, we will become a great great aunt, uncle, grandfather grandmother, etc...with nobody knowing where our remains are located or even how or when we died or were born. After most of us die our earthly remains eventually become irrelevant to the people that come after us. Having or needing a burial site to honor someone could almost become a form of idolatry....sure it may help some in the grieving process, but eventually for future generations it might as well be ashes spread in the forest. In all of Germany, it is law that families must lease the grave site for 15-30 years, and if the lease is not renewed, the headstone is removed and the remains are taken out and buried deeper amongst other remains in the same non-payment status, possibly at a different location. Germans are smart people, they realize land would be taken up with gravestones if everyone demanded their own spot. The body is simply a vessel for the soul.....appreciate the body and soul when they are together.

Your dead body will be completely unaware if part of your cousin is in there with you or not. Maybe she's scattering him in places that had meaning for him. That's what I did with my parents. They both asked to be spread in the back yard, so part of them are there, and the rest of them ended up in Michigan where they met. I think they would have liked that had I ever brought it up to them. I think they just didn't want anyone to be troubled by disposing of them. It wasn't a problem. I wanted to visit there eventually, anyway.
      I feel that was a honor to them to "spread their ashes". They were put in places that had meaning in their lives.

      @Xanaseb Рік тому +5

      A piece of the saint's body is treated by the Church as equally worthy of veneration as the whole. See the discourse of Vitricius of Rouen 'In Praise of the Saints'. Some Christians however do not tend to venerate relic pieces but the whole body must be there in order to do so, namely, the Ethiopian Orthodox.
      Cremation causes our bodies to turn into fine dust and therefore not very easy to venerate or identify. That is why I believe the Church was wrong to start permitting cremation in the 20thC, and the traditional teaching should be upheld. In conservative Catholic countries such as Poland, it was unheard of until very recently to cremate the dead. With the Covid pandemic, the state enforced cremation for a certain time, much to the horror of the people. There was no good justification for this and it goes right against traditional Catholic practice.
      Let's pray for a return of bodily burial!

    • @Xanaseb
      @Xanaseb Рік тому +1

      @@annesmith6582 there are two questions you are posing here. Q1. Why are saints' relics worthy of veneration and a non-saint not? Q2. Why are cremated remains not worthy of veneration?
      A1. They are worthy to be venerated in a special way because they have been known and proven to perform miracles and answer our prayers. One can of course, and should, venerate the body of a relative or friend or honoured member of your community, etc. but that is different to the purpose of a public 'cultus' of a saint.
      A2. One could technically venerate ashes, just not very easily.
      St.Maximillian Kolbe was killed in Auschwitz. His body was cremated and scattered on the heaps of thousands of other peoples' ashes. We can't make particular veneration to his remains therefore. Only his beard survived, apparently, cut off and saved by his fellow brothers before his arrest.

      I am old enough to remember when cremation was considered a sin. Then I was told that the Church approved it because especially in Europe, there wasn't enough land. I know in New Orleans; people are buried above ground in cemeteries and I understand that after a certain amount of time, their remains are pushed to the back of the crypt and other bodies placed in it. I don't understand how Church laws are so flexible. I remember when a marriage couldn't be annulled if it had been "consummated". Then, I was told that if the person you marry is not the person you thought they would be, you qualified for an annulment! In this scenario, almost everyone I know would qualify for an annulment but my observation is that it usually a man who wants to dump his 1st wife and marry a much younger woman with whom he can have more children. And the Church apparently is okay with that. How times have changed.

      @@joanschilleci7564 It's utterly untrue that you can have an annulment because the person you married wasn't the person you thought they were. Whoever told you that is wrong. There are set rules for an annulment, I am going through one at the moment and my brother who is a priest is advising me. We have the paperwork and it has to go to a canon law tribunal which then decides if the reasons stipulated in the Catholic church for the annulment have been met. The church is not 'ok' with dumping your spouse for nothing.

      Do what your heart tells you. If you're afraid to break some religious rule, to which you give a lot of weight and power, don't scatter them or your guilt will punish you. But if you truly believe that scattering ashes in a place that your mother loved truly honors her, then do that. You see, your personal beliefs must honored. Not religious beliefs. When humanity passes on, there will be no religion -- no need for it. Religions are man-made concepts that were intended to service humans with Earthly bodies by giving them guidance while they are alive in material form. Religions were spiritually inspired, but (as mankind always does) humans corrupted religion. When you still your mind and get quiet and breathe deeply ("life is in the breath") and focus on the center of your heart, there you will meet God. It's as if there is a doorway to the Divine in center of the heart. Gently place your hand over your heart and/or very lightly and slowly tap that area as you focus your attention there. You'll FEEL the presence of Spirit. For me it works instantly. God is always with us.

    It took me many, many years before I could ever visit my father's grave, although his lay directly behind my beloved grandparents whose grave I lovingly visit every time I am in my hometown. It was not until I could forgive him for the many sins that he committed against myself and my siblings that I could allow myself that visit. It is an act of great love to respect the body after death. Willfully choosing to dispose of a body or by partitioning off pieces of the body is simply disrespectful, and I pray for those who do not know otherwise.

    As someone who is going to college to be a mortician. We can all take care of our dead post mortem until we bury them. We can still honor them by taking care of them before we hand them over to the funeral home.

    My husband and I randomly got into the habit of strolling through cemeteries (we've happened to live close by to) on our daily walks. It really helps me ponder the concept of 'memento mori.' Often confronting, always fruitful.

    Great conversation. I go to cemetarys all the time. It is a very long family tradition in outer family. Cemetarys across the country too. It is very important for me to go and pray and remember. I even go to pray at the resting place for the priest that married us. All Souls is my favorite Day at the cemetary. 😊 🙏

    I believe it is up to the individual whether they want to be a) buried, b)cremated and buried or c)be cremated and have their ashes scattered to the winds. No church/religion should tell you how you want to bee handled after you die, its completely up to that person.

    • @nawwww

      Yes it is their choice, and i think it'd be bad to do the opposite of what the person wishes to do with their body if you already know what they chose. But not all choices we make are good. And when people love someone enough, they love them enough to tell the person what they believe is right and good because they want the best for the person, not because they want to control them.

    My father was not Catholic and insisted on cremation with ashes scattered at a specific fishing spot. My mother is Catholic, but no longer practices due to Alzheimer’s. Before she had Alzheimer’s she informed us that she wants to be cremated and sprinkled at same location as my late Father. I am a practicing Catholic, my brother is not. He is adamant in following my mother’s wishes- I am torn. Guidance please…(?)

      You can take some dirt/water of the fishing spot and if/when she passes bring it to your mother’s final resting place in consecrated ground? I think it Honors her faith and her wish to have some symbolic closeness to your father’s resting place. I am sorry for the loss of your father and the struggle your mother and your family have now. I will keep your family in my prayers.

    I am not a Catholic but two of my brothers married Catholic women and changed their religion so I have respect for both followings as we all worship the same God. I already have my place of rest in a Church Yard where my daughter was married and my family members ashes are already laid to rest. I always say a prayer for my lost family at the graveyard and when visiting a church I will say a prayer and light a candle for them. I think saying a prayer gives you strength to cope with the loss of love ones as well.

    Your knowledge on the subject is enlightening and appreciated. I grew up praying to the dead and making the sign of the cross when passing a cemetery. My mom passed away two yrs ago and was buried next to her first born in a different state. This makes it difficult for us to visit their graves because of traveling hardship. When my sister visits the graves, she spends close to 4 hours at the site praying and chatting with our mom. It helps her feel close to her.

    Fr. Mike, although as a faithful Catholic, I love the traditional Mass, but outside the traditional Mass, I love the way you have conversations with us on a personal level. You speak so beautifully and with such “common like logic”. Your presentation is as though we are having a conversation together, as individuals. I am really just trying to compliment you for being so real and your messages from any question, no matter how obscure, you’re able to make sense of them and reply so openly, honestly, and in a way which makes absolute sense. Thank You Fr. Mike, you’re a really great guy and I would love to be a member of your congregation, albeit via live stream to Melbourne, Australia. Answered my questions. I thought I was weird because every time I pass a cemetery or a grave marker on the side of the road (I am on the road A LOT) I always pray. There’s a marker for a man named Jim on my way home and I don’t know him but have always been compelled to pray for him so I do. I pass him all the time. There’s even been times that I see what I thought was a grave marker on the side of the road and I pray but I get close and come to find that it’s a water line, a power marker I’ve even prayed for a traffic cone thinking it was a cross. Thank you Fr. I loved your explanation

      We visit our son's grave every Sunday after Mass and it has brought such tremendous such inner peace, hope and healing knowing that we too will lie with him some day. As Catholics we believe that we live in communion with the dead and in that way no one is truly dead for we live with hope of the resurrection.
