The first time I played and beat this game was actually on my iPhone. It's a great version honestly, once you get used to the controls. Once I beat it, I immediately bought it on PC just to beat it again. Still one of my favorite games
I just played this game for the first time and ive been gaming since i can remember, youd think id be spoiled from the current games now but still this game is a masterpiece, i loved it and couldnt stop playing
I remember playing this one section in this game when I was younger. I ran I dont remember how long all up and down a hotel looking for a key for a door with a padlock. I did that until I got so mad at the padlock I shot it and the door swung open... I was a little angry at that point...
I love this game in general because of the late 90s early 2000s Snowy New York City! With the urban gang graffiti ally ways and streets. Everytime it snows at my house a few games to play that come to mind is Max Payne, Silent Hill, and Metal Gear Solid.
Yeah, people have been roasting me for that. In my defense, MP2 is where I spent most my time with the series, so when I jumped into part 1 after all these years, I just instinctively used the controls I was already familiar with.
Another awesome vid taking me down memory lane! I remember playing this game on xbox as a kid while I was in the process of moving. Playing in an dark empty house on a small TV/VCR combo lol things got batshit scary during the dream sequences especially the screaming when ever you from fall from the blood trails OMG!! And Max Paynes narration was beautiful and badass as if Morgan Freeman and the Punisher made a baby.
Dude I wish Big Man Tyrone could do a reading as Max Payne as the panels appear on-screen OMG!! I don't know why but everytime I've played a new game I always watched "Lord's and Ladies" with the thug before killing him lol Even many years later playing on the PS4 it's always stood out as a WTF moment in Max Payne among many lol
This video was so worth the wait. Fantastic writing and always appreciate the port research. I had no idea about this GBA version. Can’t wait for the next one!
Playing through Max Payne has been a weird December tradition for me since it came out. A personal Die Hard without the Christmas elements I guess. I completely agree on the atmosphere of the game. It's very cold but very alive. Thanks for the retrospective. It was a great one.
There’s snow. That’s pretty Christmassy. Sounds like a cool tradition. I might swipe it, (although I’m still watching Die Hard, the greatest Christmas movie ever made). Edit: Gremlins is a close second…
The first two games were a love letter to film noir and the dime pulp novels from that era. The narration and dialogue definitely draws inspiration from pre-war (and post) detective fiction from writers like Raymond Chandler.
God this game is one of the best games of all time. So amazing and high up on my top ten of all time. The gritty setting and story, amazing gameplay. John wick before john wick
Imagine how my mind was blown when I realized that Marko (Poets of the Fall's lead singer) gave his looks for Vladimir in MP. He was changed in the sequel, but still they used their song. Nice nod by including that Late Goodbye cover at the end. Great video as always!
He also provided voice for one of the TV shows, Address Unknown, and drew that Captain Baseball Boy comic strip. Plus Markus Kaarlonen was involved in a sound design. Poets and Remedy go way back:)
not going to lie, I thought that you were going to do a silent hill retrospective, but as long as we get new videos from you with your high quality I'm happy with any game
This is one of my favorite games of all time. It's great when I see it get the love it so much deserves. Max Payne was a revolutionary game from its day, but in the modern era of video streaming and the essays/reviews/retrospectives that come with that, it has been sorely under-represented. Thanks for making this video, and know that you've gained a subscriber. Also, it looks like some of your shootdodges were pretty short, I think this is avoided on PC by using Nvidia Inspector (or another program of your choosing) and capping the frame rate at 60fps. (Some of your shootdodges looked normal though, so I'm not sure really what's going on there.)
I'm glad you liked it! I'll have to look into Nvidia inspector. It did feel like a lot of my shot doges ended a bit too early, but I assumed I was just too familiar with part 2, and it was all in my head. Thanks for the heads up!
Max Payne is the only game I have played over and over again, and bought multiple copies of. PC, Xbox, and ipod/phone. I love being able to get on a plane and load up some Max.
This and the second one are my favorite games of all time. I've never been able to explain exactly what it was that made them special, but you just have!
As an anime-loving big time JRPG nerd who's game library is largely brightly colored Japanese games I absolutely love this game. There's just something truly special and magical about it, the story, the setting and the intangible sense of "cool" that comes from a true labor of love. This game my stick out like a sore thumb in my collection, but that should just stand as a testament to the game's quality. Now, I need to try out that Kung Fu mod 👀
As someone who grew up with a Gamecube (I mean technically I grew up with the SNES cause I'm old but I mean I HAD a Gamecube) I never got the chance to play any of the Max Payne games so I really appreciate you making a retrospective to see what I missed. Also your RE series is one of the best and most well-informed I've ever seen. Great stuff!
Funfact: The guy who plays Vladimir Lem is Marko Saaresto. He's a friend of writer Sam Lake and the lead singer of the Band "Poets of the Fall" who make their debut in the credits Max Payne 2 / MP2 gave birth to this fantastic band! They continue doing songs for Remedy games till this day
Late to the party but I remember this game. My best friend and I just started high school. His mom rented the game for us from blockbuster for the first Xbox. The platforming parts and wife screaming Max’s name in pain and fear kept us up at night. The ending, not spoiling it, was an amazing but also sad experience.
I was only a kid when I played MP, I was so immersed in his depressing story that those minor gameplay flaws went unnoticed by me, amazing memories playing this!
When I replayed this recently and tried the second and third game for the first time, I was amazed by how young everyone in the graphic novel sequences looked. It's still excellent. I guess I'm alone here, but I think everything apart from the shooting in 3 is hot, pretentious garbage. So much so that it ruins the improved shooting.
Awesome video. The first time I played this game was on ps2 when I was a kid. I was on my way to circuit city with a friend and his dad and my grandpa gave me $100 to spend on whatever I wanted. I picked up Max Payne, FF 7, and FF Tactics. I asked my friend to come upstairs and sit with me because the dark atmosphere and erratic behavior of the NPCs scared me so much.
this game is so satisfying when you master it. i completed it on dead on arrival the other day and loved it, and to be honest, didnt even find it THAT difficult.
About bullet time 14:05 - it is because of specific key bind. If you set your keys for bullet dive and bullet time to be different - then you would not have this problem
YES! I absolutely love this series. MP Easily on my top 5 favorite game of all times. In fact i just completed playing MP3 for the 4th time a few days ago and it was so amazing. I wish we'll see the return of Max one day, i really miss him. Fun fact, i'm playing The Evil Within now and couldn't help but see some influences on the main character (Sebastían Castellanos) , you know, hard boiled honest cop, gets his wife and daughter killed by some shady accident. Keeps working until he comes across some weird shit and starts a journey of revenge and self discovery via flashbacks. Anyway Thak you for doingt this! and keep the good work sir.
Fantastic video! I was surprised you didn't mention the game's difficulty that increases as you play better, but aside from that it's a fine review and look back on a brilliant action-noir experience.
That explains some things because I beat this game on the hardest difficulty without too many problems. It was tough but didn’t feel like it was unfair or not manageable but as it got to the assault on the skyscraper, I got wasted by a sniper so many times. I assumed it was just the normal difficulty increasing as you go along but I struggled with that bloody sniper.
@@AvalancheReviews As soon as I watched your retrospective I went and bought 1 & 2 again. I have them on disc, but wanted to add them to Steam. Stoked to play again. Love your content, dude!
The difficulty is a non-issue if you take a moment to look at the options menu to rebind the bullet-time keys (which are already separated to RMB and left shift by default) and don't rush head into gunfights. Max Payne is a game where you have to nail headshots as those refill your meter the most and every enemy dies to a single shot to the head, even from one shotgun pellet. Retreat and use base bullet-time for most of your encounters and only dive whenever you are in an advantageous position. You can also dodge-roll in this game too without using up bullet time and you are basically invincible to enemy bullets while doing it.
13:30 You don't have to be completely still to activate bullet time. You can hotkey bullet time and shoot dodging to their own seperate keys. The button you keep pressing is the "bullet time combo" button meant to serve both functions as a preference.
You can assign the regular bullet time without the leap to an extra key. I put it on the mouse wheel, which takes a short time to get used to, but as you start to get the groove you become much more flexible in combat.
Great video, Jared! Max Payne was a groundbreaking experience in gaming, really work of art, besides all flaws, of course. The game is really hard, still I love it. P.S.: For me, the definitive edition was the PS2 one, just because I found the translation version of it (with dub in my native language and everything) first. Of course I buy the REAL copy later. That's it. Good luck and keep bringing good stuff for us to see! =D
@@AvalancheReviews It was an official dub. Well, the thing it is a work for PC and Xbox version of the game, PS2 never launch any game with official dub in my country, thanks people of internet for the hard work in translating the text and add the dub. And I agree, fan dub always is something interesting to see.
I'm even slightly afraid to watch these as MP is my favorite duology of all time. The only two games that were ever made are occupying a special place in my heart.
Hey Jared, been watching your channel for a few months and I love your fair and well thought out reviews. Watching your Max Payne retrospective got me in the mood to replay all 3 games. Blasted through 1 in like a day and half and currently working my way through 2 again. Feels great to play these again. Keep up the awesome work on your videos
Now that's what I like to hear! Don't get me wrong, it's cool when people enjoy my videos, but when my stuff inspires them to play the games I cover, that's a special kind of awesome!
From my experience with the game, you can rebind standalone bullet time to any button, and the bullet dodge to a standalone button so you can turn on only bullet time.
Great Video Man, i love those games to death. Still have my pc copy from 2001 and bought MP 1&2 again for XBox when I got an Xbox 360. The GBA-Version was a pretty solid Game in its on right. Can’t wait for Part 2!
One of the first ps2 games I played, loved it back then. Tried to replay last year and wasn't able to finish, still love its presentation though. Great video!
I’m always surprised when I go back to old games how hard they seem to be. I breezed through the RE2 remake having a blast on the way. Revisiting the original, the tank controls suddenly made it feel almost unplayably hard by comparison but I was pretty good at it back then.
So I played this game over and over again during this year and can give a few hints how to replay this game with a bit different experience. Step 1 - map your bullet time controls separately - for example map bullet time on right mouse button and bullet dodge on shift. Step 2 - try as you can to avoid using bullet time and bullet dodge in first levels and instead try using standard non bullet time roll by pressing jump and left or right direction and get the hang of it - you gonna notice that this standard roll also slows time a bit without depleting your bullet time meter and it’s pretty evasive. Diagonal standard rolls are less evasive so try to avoid doing them and stick to left or right rolls. When you get the hang of rolls you gonna have another evasive tool so you can use bullet time only when you really need it and there will be plenty of it. One more little hint which is a bug but a handy one - so you mastered the rolls and can just roll in and roll out of shootouts but sometimes you gonna find yourself in a middle of shootout but with empty clips and need to reload - reload animation will get you shot or killed so use bullet dodge instead cause in it your guns will be magically reloaded. Have a nice play :)
I love your videos, i usually watch your complete game series retrospectives, and i watched this video a few times too. I wanted to say that you can change bullet time and shootdodge in the option to be 2 separate things, also the feel that Max is "glued" to the floor, ESPECIALLY in shoot dodge is because the game runs faster than 60fps. If you fix the fps it will be normal. I watch a lot of max payne videos and somtimes i feel sad for the people because all of them plays more than 60fps and the shootdodge is pretty useless that way. I know its an old video, but better say that later than never. Keep up the enormous good work!
As was the case for me back when I played Max Payne on the PS2 in ‘01, there’s is no save-spamming on the PS4 Version (which incidentally *is* the PS2 version, just played through the PS4)... therefore the glass cannon death mechanics & precision platform system is a little more tense & [sometimes] down right aggravating. However it’s not a deal breaker nor does it ruin the experience as a whole at all.
@@AvalancheReviews Be warned the ps2 version has no quick save. Just finished it myself but damn... Dream sequences and the end game kept me on my toes.
My favorite game of all time i played this game when i was 4 years old ...safe to say it made a man of me, thought my respect, love, duty, and responsibility, and oh how to grow up strong and hard...today's kids well...Fortnite and spoiled
Jamie Guy aww that’s greasy. I really do feel bad for you guys getting so many shitty ports over years. Like the classic move where they just slow down the entire game when they make it 50fps like they did with sonic.
ArtifiShuL Instinct actually that is a common misconception. People normaly think that games back then were 50hz = 50fps and 60hz = 60fps but that just really isnt true. What actually happened was 50hz = 25fps and 60hz = 30fps. In the modern day however 60hz is capable of way over 60fps and we dont use 50hz here anymore. Still im am glad that due to emulating i can now get solid fps on my old games while still keeping my pal colour scheme.
@ArtiShul Instinct Tell me about it. I used to own MP2 when I had my PS2 and oh boy! It was literally unplayable... The framerate was all over the god damn place. Sadly that make me look down on MP2 for many years, my younger self just blame the game itself. A few months ago I decided to give MP2 another chance, PC version ofc and it was complete different experience... But that PS2 port is always there, watching at me, making me remember. I think that's why MP2 will always be the black sheep of the series, at least to me.
They probably changed the text because the original was too hard to read on CRT TVs back then. On a monitor, you'd be sitting up close, but for the console game, you'd likely be sitting on a couch further away.
Oh boy I can finally watch this now that they released the whole series on backwards compatibility and I have finally played 1 and 2! They hold up freaking great btw, especially 2. Plus 1 gave me massive nostalgia for early 2000s games in general. EDIT: the platforming shocked me the most, I really did expect it to be hot garbage, but nah; very manageable. Max looks like American McGee’s Alice when he jumps, but he controls much better. You know, because he is a man 😂
This deserves so many more views, bro. Nice vid. This is one of my favorite games of all time, nice to see it getting more love!

Masterful pacing and atmosphere in particular.

You don't have to be completely still to activate bullet time. You can hotkey bullet time and shoot dodging to their own seperate keys. The button you keep pressing is the "bullet time combo" button meant to serve both functions as a preference.
Your analysis skills have definitely improved tremendously. Thanks for covering one of my favorite games!
That's awesome to hear. Thank you!
Glad ya liked it man!!! Was your PS2 disc an official dub or a fan made one? A fan dub of Max Payne in another language would be cool as hell to see.
Trilogy?
Thanks for the great retrospective on 1 of my favorite games of all time. Cant wait for more!
Great Video Man, i love those games to death. Still have my pc copy from 2001 and bought MP 1&2 again for XBox when I got an Xbox 360. The GBA-Version was a pretty solid Game in its on right. Can’t wait for Part 2!
Thanks. I'm rendering it out as we speak. I hope it does the game justice. Max Payne 2 is one of the best games ever made in my opinion.
I just got the notification for this. Stopped watching Gridman JUST to watch it.
Time to jump into a new retrospective! Good to see you back with more of these!
It's good the be back with more of these!
Digging the new logo, Jared.
Only badside to Max Payne on PC is it doesn't allow you to play with a Dualshock controller... Wonder if an Xbox controller would work?
For some reason, I'm able to use my Dualshock with Max Payne 2 on the PC tho...
Thanks for making this. I love all 3 games and the GBA game is fun in small bursts.Max Payne 1 is in my top 6 favorite games of all-time.
I'd like to take a look at it running on ps4. I didn't even know it was available on the psn.
Definitely made you a man. I assume you got a job and stated paying the bills shortly after finishing it.
I tried playing MP1 for PS2 via PSN on PS3 and man did the frame rate ever chug. I highly recommend the PC version of all Max Payne games.
ArtifiShuL Instinct u think it chuged for you. Im europian and i have the PAL 50hz port making it unplayable
The classic Xbox port was actually good tho
@ArtiShul Instinct Tell me about it. I used to own MP2 when I had my PS2 and oh boy! It was literally unplayable... The framerate was all over the god damn place. Sadly that make me look down on MP2 for many years, my younger self just blame the game itself. A few months ago I decided to give MP2 another chance, PC version ofc and it was complete different experience... But that PS2 port is always there, watching at me, making me remember. I think that's why MP2 will always be the black sheep of the series, at least to me.
Man I wish I could write a great video like this. Time will come for me. As always great video Jared ! 👍
Wanted to try and start getting into this franchise, glad to see you have a retrospective series for it! BTW, loved your RE retrospective.
They probably changed the text because the original was too hard to read on CRT TVs back then. On a monitor, you'd be sitting up close, but for the console game, you'd likely be sitting on a couch further away.
Loving the videos man. Would really like to see you tackle the Onimusha series sometime.
recently beat Max payne 1, 2 and 3. And they all still hold up really well, thanks to the strong story of crime drama and awesome gameplay.
Memories of playing MP on release in 8th grade and absolutely spamming that f5 button flooded back to me as soon as you mentioned it.
I'm watching this while its snowing. *True immersion*
Ha! That's as real as it gets.
Yeèeess Max Payne is one of my favourite action games of all time great content as always mate 👌 and Merry Christmas.
You know, because he is a man 😂
To me, still the greatest single-player shooter of all time.
I’m gonna tell my kids this was frank miller’s Sin City
