Patching up coolant leak with K-Seal on 2012 Prius

  • My Prius was getting random misfires, had already changed the spark plugs and ignition coils but was still having issues in the morning. Finally realized that I probably had coolant leaking in through a blown head gasket.
    Testing K-Seal as a temporary fix until I figured out a permanent solution.

    Pro Tip. If you cant do the head gasket you can take the Oring out of your coolant overflow and it will unpressurize system. It will boil much much easier but pushes way less cooland into the cylinder. working great in winter especially.

      @tim z is there any issue not fully close but partial close coolant overflow,also there is side cap to let air out or coolant out ?

    • @TimZ007
      @TimZ007 2 роки тому +1

      @@samtx that cap vents at whatever the cap is rated at . I think 15psi. partial close may be similar to taking out o-ring. Removal of the o ring lets you leave the cap locked on so it cant fall off. I had originally taped the cap loosely. When it starts to misfire and studder on every start up you know you need to quit driving it. If enough coolant gets in it will hydro lock that cylinder then bend a rod or worse.

    • @TimZ007
      @TimZ007 2 роки тому +4

      @@samtx the issue is your coolant system is no longer pressurized which means when you cut off the car it's not forcing coolant back into the cylinders which is causing your misfire on startup. Water boils at 212 antifreeze spoils around 236 and antifreeze at 15 psi boils around 275 I think. So if you will imagine under heavy loads or hot temperatures the coolant near the cylinders is going to boil. Creating pockets of air and possibly cavitation in your water pump area. Running the air conditioner is also going to put more heat in front of your radiator and make it worse. If you drive easy and during cool temperatures it doesn't seem to have a problem running on pressurized. If you were in heavy stop and go traffic you might want to run the heat. I would also note that I would lose a couple cups of coolant a day because being no longer sealed it's going to evaporate.

    Thanks for your video. I have a 2014 Prius 2. I also was receiving misfires, shaking, losing coolant and burning oil at a faster than normal speed. When I purchased my vehicle I would get a oil change every 10K. Now I get a oil change about every 4K miles. I also forgot mention my Prius has over 300K miles. Anyway I spent a little over $3K getting all new spark plugs, injector coils and having that installed by a professional. Sadly that didn't fix the problem of the shaking, misfires and coolant loss. I was spending about $50 a week in coolant. Anyway I seen your video yesterday and gave it a try. Waited for car to cool before applying, did the maintenance run to keep engine running so solution can run through the car. 4 hours later started it back up and it was perfect. Went and got an oil change just in case anything during all that bad driving I was doing mixed in with the oil. Woke up this morning for another cold start. Perfect. Even if this isnt a permanent fix this is great. Thanks

Oil isn’t milky color, no white smoke from tailpipe, etc. I used K seal and a week later my coolant level is where it was before I poured in the K Seal. It’s driving me crazy. The shop told me it’s either a small leak in the radiation plug and I need to replace my radiator or else my water pump is faulty. My water pump is about 60,000 miles old. I’m gonna wait another week to see where my coolant level is then. Maybe it just went down a bit after the K seal but is sealed now?

    Weird problem. 2012 Prius, 145k miles. Oil changed religiously at every 10K, 0W20 full synthetic. Never driven at low coolant levels. Sudden loss of coolant on the highway. drove 200 miles one way, no problem. on the way back, stopped at every rest area to add DI water, i.e. every 30 miles or so. In each case, there is still some water in the plastic tank. Engine runs smooth, accelerates smooth, purrs like a cat. No white water vapors in the exhaust. Took apart the front, and looked for pink residue around connections and radiator seal lines. No pink residue. Rubber hoses are tightened with original spring clamps, but no pink leaks. Electric water pump is clean. However, there is pink residue at the back of the plastic overflow tank, the firewall and the drive shaft. Sometimes the leak is so big, that it ends up on the front passenger tire and the passenger side doors. How does it go from inside to the OUTSIDE the vehicle is a mystery. Check engine never shows up. The high temperature light comes on and off, sometimes flashing, sometimes solid, then disappears. Driving around town seems no loss so far. Planning to do a pressure test and exhaust fumes test later on today.

      Because while replacing head gasket you might get into other fixes. By the time this issues occur cars usually have low compression and other things to do making it useless to replace gasket, when it needs entire engine rebuild.

      @@arthura7442 you are right. But if it is known when it starts having head gasket leaks, it is still worth to do. You can also check the cylinder wall using endoscopy camera first. It is Toyota known problems on Prius. Toyota updated head gasket on 2013 and piston and piston rings on 2015 that reduce oil consumption problem significantly and much less head gasket issues.

      1,000? You'd be lucky. Anyway it's pointless if your car is old and has high mileage because just about everything else in your engine is probably worn out too. The only thing to do at that point is to remove the engine and have it completely rebuilt. This job is only worth doing if your car is rare or increasing in value, otherwise scrap it or keep using something like kseal until it claps out.

    Worst video ever, DO NOT USE HEAD GASKET REPAIR, they absolutely wreck your engine and car, I used kseal for 2 years because I thought, whats the big deal since I planned on replacing the engine, well turns out kseal also plugs your radiator amd your heater core, and possibly it catalytic convertor

    Be careful when you use this KSeal shit. I put this stuff in my van's cooling system and it hasn't run since February of 2020. Where do I begin?
    I began to have intermittent stalling problems. Everything that looked like either a fuel blockage or lack of spark etc. I even bought a new $93.00 MAP sensor and STILL the problem was there.
    So now my engine is essentially running poorly. However I maybe used too much by accident. The head gaskets are a main point of failure if your leaks are else where. The cooling jackets are rather wide BUT the head gasket has small slits that restrict the flow of coolant to prevent over cooling. KSeal CAN stick to your head gasket and slowly DAMAGE your head gasket!!!!
    So if you use KSeal my STRONG recommendation is use the absolute LEAST amount of it as possible and when your leaks are sealed CHANGE YOUR COOLANT!!! Or take it to a respectable mechanic within a month. Don't make the same mistake I did!!!

      Sigma XIII I use blue devil gasket sealer, that seams to work for me. My pt cruiser is notorious for having bad head gaskets. Since I used it I’ve never had a problem with the head gasket since. If you do plan on using it. Do not add to reservoir, add directly to the radiator. Either by the radiator cap or through the upper radiator hose connected to the radiator. That’s if you so choose to do this again. I am so sorry about your van tho. Hopefully this will help in the future!

      Also run the car for an hour or so, if it starts to overheat then turn it off and try again later if you didn’t reach the hour limit.
