  • Episode 185: Chronic Kidney Disease Stage 3: Causes, Symptoms, Treatment, Renal Diet, Life Expectancy & more. Chronic Kidney Disease Stage 3 is not something that just comes on suddenly. Instead, it progresses over time due to chronic kidney disease. There are five stages of kidney disease. It starts with mild kidney damage in stage one. If this condition goes unmanaged it will progress up to stage 5, also known as end-stage renal disease (ESRD). This is when kidney failure sets in and the kidneys no longer work and dialysis is required to filter the blood. In stage 3 there is still time to preserve kidney health. It may also prevent someone from losing all kidney function and needing dialysis. Renal Dietitian Jen Hernandez discusses Chronic Kidney Disease stage 3 and offers tips to slow down or even stop the progression of kidney disease.
    Renal Dietitian Jen Hernandez Covers:
    What is Chronic Kidney Disease?
What is Stage 3 Kidney Disease?

@@lesbear9828 hello Les. You’re very kind to think of me. To update you we (myself and my doctor) have come to realize my poor eGFR and Creatinine was due to a combination of drugs that had a bad effect on my Creatinine. It was two cholesterol meds that, one normal dose and the other an extremely high dose. The prescribing doc was in Fla where we lived for two years then came back home to NJ and saw my old doc and he knew something was up. Took him a few visits and months but he got me off the high dose and just to a single smaller dose and it’s pretty good. eGFR IS 74 which he seems please with. But Les, when I was first diagnosed it was your pod cast that brought me some relief! I was devastated and thought my time was short! Your a kind man and humanitarian! I ended up buying Dr Rosansky’s book which was insightful. For people, like me who only had a doctor to turn to but no one to talk to you were a god send. Thank you again! Hoping this finds you well and still enjoying your occasional cheat and feeling your best. Thank you again for the thought of reaching out to me. God bless!

I got a surprise CKD diagnosis Stage 4b last year. after ending up in the ER with an eGfr of 21. I have been taking Losartan and Farxiga but the MOST IMPORTANT thing I did was to consult with a nutritionist and CHANGE my dietary choices. Mind you my primary doc and nephrologist both told me it was not necessary to see a dietician and that I'd end up on dialysis. My eGfr is now up to 30 and other labs i.e. BUN, Albumin, Phosphorus, Protein look significantly improved- I am now in Stage 3b, according to my nephrologist. Thank you SO MUCH for the useful info!!!

My kidney function is 40% yet I've got NO kidney conversation until Protein got in my urine. Yet I've been inquiring for 4 years to only be ignored! I had a real bad back issue and my kidneys were NEVER mentioned. I couldn't walk 5 feet without a wheelchair. Still my had NOTHING to say or would not acknowledge my kidneys. I think it would be wise for you to bring the possibility, or idea, of 'conservative care' to the conversation. Do it when you have the retired Nephrologist on so he can add to the pool of experiences. You do not have to be pro or anti. Just present the facts for all of the more elderly to hear before being shuttled off to a dialysis dungeon.

Nor problem swith urine and bloodtests with electrolytes and potassium etc. Here in New Zealand we have a public health system and you cannot get to see a nephrologist or meet with a renal dietician until you are nearing eGFR of 30.

I have similar, just been told at stage 3, but my egfr has been around 62 , since 2009 but have never had urine test for protein so could've had stage 2 for 15years !! . I h ave blood tests each year as on BP meds, nothing ever mentioned, wish I had been told as I feel I could have made positive changes earlier , when I was younger and fitter feeling a bit down with it all.

Hello: I have not been diagnosed by a Nephrologist yet - appointment coming soon - but my blood work came back with a egfr of 57 and Creatinine of 1.11. I have a duplicated collecting system with hydronephrosis. Would that be a contributing factor?

I do so like watching your videos, James! I have been working with my dietician for several months now, and found out that my insurance has no limits on visits as long as there is a need! HURRAY for original Medicare! Lol
I have occasional episodes of hyperkalemia, so I do need to watch my potassium levels, but it is pretty easy... I am allowed up to 2000mg per day-- but aim for 1500mg sodium. I don't always hit goal, but I do manage to get back on track most of the time. COVID lockdown has taken a huge toll though, I am very stress-reactive, and I am now in stage four. Got to figure out how to let it go! (cue : me singing FROZEN theme song...)LOL

Hello ! thank you for all this good info .. I noticed you mentioned uric acid ? What do you take or eat to deal with uric acid ? My son was recently prescribed allopurinol he’s only been on it 2 wks !

    • @DADVICETV
      @DADVICETV  3 роки тому +8

I'm on the same med - currently at 200mg a day. I go in next week for new labs and my guess is I'll be increased to 300mg a day. High Uric Acid is serious - you'll want to get it down and medication is the fastest way. As my Uric Acid has come down, my eGFR has returned back to normal (low 30s for me).
Diet has an impact and I feel that part of mine going so high was getting in a rut with my diet. I was eating the same thing almost every day. I got on an Asparagus and other purine-rich foods kick along with having more sugar. Variety would have been helpful in my case, but I feel in love with grilled Asparagus for lunch and dinner.
Once my Uric Acid is back under control I'm going to make sure and eat variety and not get stuck on the same thing day after day. I also needed to cut back on sugar and increase fiber.

We could have it everyday lol. We do cauliflower and green beans too and trying to limit his red meat intake .. I feel better to know this Med has helped you With uric acid as he is now on it , hes 35 not a drinker or smoker he’s had gout flare ups for 2 yrs- thank you so much !

Allopurinol worked to prevent gout flares for me for 10 years, along with vegetarian diet and losing alot of weight. But my liver enzymes shot way up for years. Once I stopped taking it, my liver enzymes returned to normal. I have been drinking more water and having a lemon a day ( low pral) to help with uric acid excretion, and that seems to be working pretty well...

If is possible if your uric acid isn’t controlled. Your doc can run blood test to check and prescribe medication if necessary. This is a challenge I had to deal with personally and it is now under control with medication.

    Something to consider.
I have stage 3 ckd and no high blood pressure and no diabetis. What then? I was born with one kidney. Studies show that 75% of people like me have kidney damage on the age of 18.
There is a study published by Dutch nephrologist Dr Schreuder.
This condition can not be fixed.
Maybe something worth of giving attention in this UA-cam videos. There is not much to find on the web.
