The issue that I see with this, is that you can't control what non-noteblock sounds it can pick up. And picking up non-noteblock sounds would connect redstone to the sound system. That seems equally useful to connecting with shape updates to be used in redstone, as with the observer.
(my thoughts take some inspiration from simplysarc's video on this, which shares some similarity to yours, tho I feel his solution has issues)

I think simplysarc's Solution is too overpowerd. because that way you have a 1 block solution to differenciate between very singele sound
So you only need 1 block to sort mobs. or differentieate between any other sound event making it sort of a survival command block.

​@@MrKorwaldski I don't think control like that would harm the game. More control over some things, like what happened with wither roses, could be bad, but I don't see this being like that.
