    Ive seen a hundred of these videos to use a flat iron and all the girls use towels over the dreads when they go to seal them.....this looks way more effective. Thanks!

    It can leave marks on metal plates - on my ceramics they tend to just flake right off if it leaves any residue. It might be best to try it on a flat iron you don't particularly care for. The cheaper the synthetic, the gloopier the residue will be. Kanekalon fiber tends to melt the smoothest, but polypropelene fiber (which is the cheap cheap of jumbo braid) tends to be stickier. Stick with Kanekalon or another smooth melt fiber for the best results.

      Doctored Locks how do you remove these once there in your hair ? Will hot water work ?

      If you braid them in, you would just unbraid them. Yes, typically hot water is another common way to seal them. :)

    iv been doing the iron method but this one looks easier and yeah i saw people putting towels on them but this looks better as you can turn with the dreads to make sure they are twisted :) thank you! will try this tomorrow less burning my fingers too haha

    This one is pretty easy, but with a full size iron you will have the ability to cover more area at once - so a full size iron will go faster - a lot faster.
    If you are having trouble getting the twist with the iron, make sure that your dreads are secured tightly at the top, and make sure you hold the twist before you cover it with your towel and press. I can troubleshoot it with you if you are interested. :) Just let me know.

    I too would like to know an approximate temperature on the flat iron, i try to keep it at around 230 degrees, but it seems like it is making my dreads too skinny from being too hot (they arent burning tho). but they arent sealing the way i want them to, and if i try turning down my flat iron a little, they dont seal good at all... lol

    thanks for all your great video's! Got hubby working on a loom for me :) and was having a heck of a time when I was not sealing in the rounded motion. Mine are burning also, so I've turned it down....some spots are harder than others, its this normal? Thanks so much!

    Will any hair straightener do? I can't find any information on how hot it should be, just that it can't be too hot. The coolest setting on my straightener is 230 degrees. The hottest over 400.

    What sealing method do you prefer to wear ? .. I've made a set via steamer and want a smoother look, but am scared the straighter might create "hard spots". I am constantly styling my synthetics which makes them poofy over a 2 week period, yet my hair can handle them up to a month.. should I just crochet them?

    What temperature do you recommend I got one for Christmas and it has couple settings on it
    Also where are good places for synthetic fibers at? Particular kind of fibers?

    • @doctoredlocks
      @doctoredlocks  2 роки тому

      I really like our KK Smooth Seal from Doctored Locks - they take less heat to form into shape and they are really soft. As for what temperatures, the best thing to do is to take a strand of fiber and play with it. If it melts, it is too high. If it stays kinky, it is too low. You want to be able to straighten the fiber - that's when you know you've hit the good spot for any fiber. It will change with every fiber (and every iron is different), so just get comfortable testing and then you can make notes for yourself on what settings you like for each fiber. :)

    I can't get it to stay twisted! I turned the heat up and it's melting i turn it down a little, but either way it won't stay twisted. What am i doing wrong?

    • @doctoredlocks
      @doctoredlocks  8 місяців тому

      Are you holding them twisted as they cool? Synthetics retain their shape in the cooling process, if they are still warm when you let them go, the twist will not hold. If you are having trouble with the temperature using a flat iron, you may want to try a household iron. You can see that method here ua-cam.com/video/m4GY-u-qyGA/v-deo.html

    Great video! Ive been sealing my dreads this way, and they seem tight and sealed, but when I twist it around a bit afterwards, the dread seems to be able to fall out of its shape. Will this cause me issues when they are installed ? will the dread be tight for a few days then loose its twisty shape?

    • @doctoredlocks
      @doctoredlocks  5 років тому

      It's a little hard to say without seeing them. You may not be allowing them to fully cool into shape. This style of dread will naturally loosen up a bit over time, but they can easily be resealed between uses and you shouldn't see any issues with proper care and maintenance. Some people totally rock them not sealed as tightly.

    What temperature do you use?

    • @doctoredlocks
      @doctoredlocks  6 років тому

      Honestly, every flat iron I've ever used has been so inconsistent with temps, I don't look at numbers. I just know that if the fiber doesn't respond, then I need to turn it up and if it liquefies, then to turn it down. Its pretty easy to get each iron dialed in.

  • @thoughtlesslovesong

    How hot should the flat iron be??

    • @doctoredlocks
      @doctoredlocks  7 років тому

      Every flat iron is different, and I never trust their heat settings. Assuming you are using a low temp fiber (high temp fibers are more difficult to seal with this method), you will want to start with your flat iron on medium. Take a small section of jumbo braid and see if your iron is hot enough to melt it (don't worry - it will melt to itself, not to your iron). Keep turning it up until you find that the fiber seals to itself. Once you find that temp, back off just slightly - and this is the perfect temperature for your iron. Hot, but not too hot. :)

    This method leaves the fake dread too shiny and straigher than my natural kinky dread.

    • @doctoredlocks
      @doctoredlocks  6 років тому

      Try turning your heat down. If your fiber starts to liquefy, shiny will happen. :)
