Growing up with iconic JDM cars like the Supras, Skylines, Rx7s, and more, there was a ton of potential for what could have been. But over the years car manufacturers have shifted focus away from performance and fun, and places all their chips on a future green world. So what happened to all those cool cars from the 90s we all know and love? Why are prices on 25-year-old cars tripling their original MSRP? Well, Alex found out what happened, so get yourself a juice box, pause that Runescape session and strap in to find out What Happened To Buying Cheap Cars!

Unfortunately, most of the “cheap” cars are now super high mileage late 2000s crap that has been completely run into the ground that quite honestly needs to be sent to the junkyard. It’s a combination of cash for clunkers, the microchip shortage, and social media influencer hype which has created the perfect storm that has priced everyone out.

As someone who is almost 40 I’ve watched prices on vehicles change a lot. A lot of the problem is the shifting customer demographics. When I was a kid older folks drove Cadillacs and Buick’s and stuff. Now in 2021 the average age of a Miata owner is plenty old enough to be a grandpa. Hell my mom is almost 60, she is a grandma and drives a SS Camaro. This shift has caused these companies to include a bunch of crap younger people don’t care for. Prime examples: my wife’s base Camry has electric seats. What for? Or here’s a funny one… you won’t be able to buy the new brz/gr86 without heated seats. I live in the south, I don’t need heated seats. Nature takes care of that already lol 😂

I just bought a 2010 Kia Forte on Friday. I did some fluid flushes, re-tinted the windows today, I'll install the new head light assemblies tomorrow and clean the interior even though it is in great shape. A wash and wax as well. No dents and tires, brakes, suspension, a/c, trans are great. Runs perfect and passed emission testing. In other words a great car that needs routine maintenance. One owner. She didn't want to spend the $1700 for the needed maintenance and she didn't want to take it with her to Florida and had no where to put it before leaving. I paid $200. Yes $200, as in (two hundred dollars) for it and it's already sold when I'm done for $3600. I'll have about $450 in it total. I wish I could come across deals like this more often.

How does one get the demand to spike? Social media and internet and culture shifts and mind sets. In mid-2019 a friend of mine knew someone selling a '91 Miata with 80k miles for $1500. I offered $1750 since she wasn't quite ready to sell. Managed to snag the car. It had been daily driven by a lady for 4 years, before that it had 35k miles on it. No rust, very clean other than some paint chips. That same car in this area now would be around $6k. Sadly I sold it, but I bought another Miata last year right before the pandemic that's gone up in value since owning it which has been nice.

These babies get insane gas mileage, and are still zippy and fun to drive. Planning on VTEC-ing one soon so it'll be more fun and just as fuel efficient when I want to just drive somewhere normal. In fact I've been using the 90 as my daily for the past half year now, dumped probably another 2k into parts for upgrades and repairs, but this has been my dream car since the early 2000's. Yeah, I am a millennial but most of us don't have a ton of cash lol which is why I was glad my dream car also made practical sense to buy, calculated my gas savings switching from my old car and in the first 3 months I saved $850 so the car is paying for itself. Yes, you can find cheap, good, classy cars, but it's few and far in between, and you have to be patient. I searched for 6 months before I saw a 06 G35 Coupe 6MT with every optional package ticked in good condition, with 82k miles, for $9500. And that might not seem cheap, but in SE Texas, nissan/infiniti VQ coupes are going for $6-9k with over 150k miles, and many in rough shape. Heck, I've seen a rolling shell with an asking price of $7k.

Not the same thing as an STI, they came with the ej205 or ej255. No STI engine in the saab 9-2x.

I'm staggered NO ONE mentioned rust. All these 90's JDM legends are now to an age where they are either too rusty and sold for parts, OR the owner bites the bullet and completely restores the car makes it rust free. Basically the clunkers can't pass inspection anymore, and the clean ones are getting more rare and have a TON of rust repair to them so obviously they are much more expensive cause the investment is much, much higher.

"I know what I got" means I definitely ain't taking lower than I think it's worth and that I will start a bidding war and make everything else go up in value. Like rare collectibles are usually valued by comparing the last known auction price.
