    My mom gave me her '96 Toyota Camry when I first got my license. I hated that car because I thought it was the most uncool thing ever, but it never gave me any issues. Looking back now that I'm older and have made some very poor car purchases for the sake of having a "cool car", that Camry was the best car I ever owned haha.

      I made the same mistake of buying "cool" cars, like a Ford Thunderbird. Only 13k miles later, my power window needed a new motor, then other things started to need work. The only things that lasted were the engine and transmission. But I didn't keep that car long enough to know. I had enough and sold it at 140k miles. Since then it's only Toyota or Honda for me. I've driven both to well over 200k miles without much problems.

    I helped buy my sister a tired old CRV as her first car. It's proven itself to be one of the most reliable cars anyone in my family has ever owned. And that's the story of how I became a Honda fan.

    • @mirknight
      @mirknight 8 місяців тому +1

      I got a CRV to learn to drive, had an accident the first week and 3 months later. Taught all of my friends to drive in it (12 more accidents), got married (8 more accidents, she drove it) and other than AC (one of ex-wife's collisions) it still ran fine.
      Had 6 other cars come and go in that time. Gave her to someone in a bad domestic situation and then my other car's engine blew....twice. So I'm back in the Honda family. I miss my old CR-V but it was beyond an eyesore.

    About Kaizen (at about 33:40): my uncle worked at a Cadillac plant WAY back in the day at a station that involved assembling and installing dashboards. According to him, if they ran into a bad speedometer, they threw it into the reject bin and grabbed another one to put in the car. If they ran out of speedos during production, they just started installing those in the reject bin until they got a fresh supply of new ones. This car was considered the Standard of the World back then, the best GM could do.
    When I was a kid in the 50s - 70s and we got a new family car, the first accessory we installed was a notepad and pen to ride along on the front seat where we jotted down the flaws we discovered as we got to know the new car. This was the to-do list for the next visit back to the dealer to ask for the problems to be fixed. It’s just how things worked then.
    We marveled when we got our first Toyota. There was nothing to write down on the list.

      Similar story from the microchip world - the US military bought several thousand chips from a Japanese manufacturer, using MIL-SPECs, which allowed for 5% bad chips, typical of US manufacturers. The Japanese delivered all the chips, but packaged (and labeled) the 'requested' 5% bad ones separately!

      @@johnbjorkman4144OMG the faulty microchip story. I heard it too but for IBM UK, and it was 3 defective chips per 10,000. So they were in a separate bag with a note.
      How the story changes but stays the same.
      Also the car mechanic would say there are over 200 things that can go wrong so you can't fix it all. Then Toyota made that a myth too until they realised the loss of revenues from repairs. So now we have a calculated maintenance/repair cost built in to all products.

    the greatest thing about Toyota/Honda were their Naturally aspirated engines. With even minimal care they almost all ran for 250k miles plus. Now that the switch has been made towards pint sized turbos that are probably only good for 2/3 of that 250k miles, you'll see more and more people switch to other brands.

    • @dakota5571
      @dakota5571 Рік тому +32

      Not really. I used to think that too but technology has changed and so has the quality of the engineering of those smaller engines. Honda are small engine experts and have been using turbos for decades and both brands would not make such steps if they knew it would destroy their sales. After all people buy these cars in large part thanks to their reliable reputation. Toyota and Honda both slowly have been going in the direction of smaller high pressure engines. If you look at the Honda civics 1.5t engine most people have been getting 200,000 miles out of those cars over the past 10 years or so they’ve been making them and for a car that’s $25,000 new, good gas millage, fun to drive , and low maintenance costs that’s extremely impressive.

      Atleast you can have them for 10 years minimum due to high warranty. For a VW or Audi it's ONLY 2 Years and they know why. They dont trust their own products or just know, that nobody will throw away a 3 years old car, and just replace after 50k km a new motor for 6000€. Its ridiculous but in europe all the TSI FSI motors are still selling even when they have a lot of problems and the consumer have to repair it. Toyota has some problems too ofc but they rather call back the vehicels and dont act like they dont know about the issue.

    I can agree on how the Lexus LS400 was truly a luxury vehicle a head of it's time. On my honeymoon, we rented one in Las Vegas, drove it to the Grand Canyon, then to The White Horse National Park in New Mexico. While coming back on I-70 doing 70 mph, I was flagged down by some local residents. I couldn't understand what they were trying to tell me since it was at night. They were all trying to tell me something about the car was not right, yet I couldn't feel and difference in performance. So I pulled over at the next exit and went around to the back of the car to see a totally blown out tire. Mind you I was doing 70mph and couldn't feel anything. It drove smooth without any pulling or drag. Even the rim held it's overall shape so I was able to change the tire. Where normal rims would have bent around the hub. I was so impressed we sold both of our cars and bought one LS400. Which lasted us 7-8 years until I was rear ended and car was totaled.

    My Honda Civic coup gave me 300K+ with only transmission issue of two gear slipping after all these years. I could have easily change that transmission cheap but traded it for new Toyota Camry. Civic was not burning oil, had no leak whatsoever, yet gave me 40mpg very reliable cars indeed.

    One Honda model you left out was the Sportabout. It was over the curb for $2100 in 1973 (could be off a year) 2 cylinders (motorcycle engine turned sideways), front-wheel drive, great pick up, 50 miles per gallon on regular gas. I loved that car more than any car I've ever owned. Two drawbacks...no a/c and I lived in Miami heat, and it was so tiny that it wasn't uncommon to come out from shopping and find that a few college guys would have picked it up and turned it sideways in the parking space.
    Then the Civic came out and I traded up, but I wish I still had that car today!

    I am on my fourth Honda, and we have a Honda lawnmower. I had a 94 civic, 16 civic and we now own a 16 pilot and an 01 accord. I’ve had a VERY expensive AC repair on my pilot recently that my warranty covered part of and then a rat got into it and in total cost $2600… (evaporator box, debris all up in there, thermistor, blower motor, expansion valve) 💀. But overall it’s been a very good car aside from that lol. My accord is my baby. I got it as a commuter car to keep miles off the pilot but I’ll keep it forever. Regular things need replacing (ignition wires, starter etc) but nothing I can’t do myself in my driveway. Very easy cars too work on. I did have my catalytic converter stolen! Apparently thrives like to also steal them off accords a lot as well, so she’s got herself a straight pipe. Lol.

      I know. They been saying that since the 90's. My mom had a friend from the south that always bothered her about buying a Honda Accord. He always said the parts will be hight to fix that car. He was buying Cadillacs. His car spent more time in the show than hers. ANd hers was only in the shop for oil changes and regular maintance.

      Yeah I'm sure you can get parts for them for a decent price they may be talking about oem which yea since Honda parts are good quality they probably do but you can always get aftermarket parts they arent necessary and adding what to someone said Honda, Toyota, Hyundai and Mazda all don't be in the shop as often as Nissan and others especially American cars. Mercedes benz are the third most reliable engine after Honda and Toyota but because everything else isn't reliable on it now a days (electronics,parts) it ends up being a unreliable brand as a whole

I know a lot more now!! I believe that it's the best car I've ever owned!! My ex got a 2005 Honda Accord in 2012 . She would constantly let the oil go dry and I would catch it just in time(barely). But she did no maintenance on it whatsoever. I say that to say this.... That car still made it to well over 200 thousand miles. And the only reason why she had to get rid of it was because it got totaled again. That was the most reliable car I've ever seen considering it received no maintenance, not even regular oil changes lol
