So if the "popular" depiction of hell is Dante's hell, then what's the actual, biblical hell supposed to be?
Edit: Also, if Lucifer is chilling in the middle of hell with dudes stuffed in his mouth, is he not actually the "Lord of Hell"? Who's calling the shots in hell? The demon with the tail that wraps around you?

@@Serttok I'm not going to pretend to be an expert, or anything more than a lapsed Catholic, but from what I can remember the only actual description of hell mentions flames and "gnashing of teeth" and I can't remember if it's canon but I recall somebody mentioned the waste dump outside Jerusalem. By that I mean it's alluded to as an allegory rather than exact coordinates XD
About the Lucifer stuff I think he was supposed to be the literal Lord of Hell, as in he had dominion of hell and all those in it. But there's some non canonical bibles that might go into more detail.

    • @JosiahMcCarthy
      @JosiahMcCarthy 5 років тому +24

@@Serttok even the notion that we have of Satan/the devil/Lucifer is not that consistent and clear throughout the Bible. But the Bible refers to God as "the one who can destroy both soul and body in hell" and says the devil (evil one) and his angels will be thrown into a lake of fire. It's different in the old testament though, where they mostly just refer to sheol, the grave. But yeah, new testament descriptions of "where the bad people go," if you will, are something like, "darkness, where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth." (Revelation is another story, and too confusing for me or most people to handle.) At some point, it became popular to think of hell as just being utterly cut off from God. Since God is goodness/ the source of all goodness, this means all you need for hell is to have none of him. Another idea is that there is no hell, that souls that don't spend eternity with God are just annihilated. Probably my favorite definition of hell is the one that says hell is actually just experiencing God's unveiled love, goodness, presence, etc, while knowing that you rejected him in life. That that produces such anguish in you, once you know how great his love is. I kind of like the idea that the revelation (granted understanding) of God's incredible nature is strong enough to make hell out of ultimate goodness, simply because you're a crooked person. Still sucks, though. This is sometimes combined with the idea that people come around eventually, through varying levels of being realigned to love God based on how bent/misaligned with God they were before. When people believe that everyone God ever created will necessarily, eventually be brought to reconciliation with God through this, that's one version of PUR, purgatorial universal reconciliation. It's sort of what I believed right before I stopped believing.

Dante liked the number 9 because he understood how Hebrew numbers work. 3 and 7 are considered to be the perfect numbers in Hebrew, as both consist of a beginning, a middle, and an end. 9 is like a perfect multiple of 3, given that it is three 3s put together, thus having a beginning a middle and an end. That's why Dante used 9.
On another note, the number 6 is considered evil, because it doesn't have a middle, but it made up of two 3s or perfect numbers. The reason 666 is used to describe Satan is that it is 3 of these evil numbers put together, thus symbolizing that he is perfect in his evil-ness. Kind of crazy when you get to know what all the numbers represent. Symbolism is a big deal in ancient Judaism and Christianity.

Knowing Better, the Lustful are not “Blown over.” The wind actually blows them off of their feet and they “fly” with the wind.
Also, the gluttonous don’t eat the slush....Cerberus did. They’re just kinda forced to lay down in the stinky mud while Cerberus claws and nips at them.
The first bolgia is for panders and seducers, you got that part right, you just mixed up the punishment. You see, the bolgia are like moats connected by bridges...Dante and Virgil have to go to the midpoint of the bridge to view the punishment. What they see is two files of sinners, one file coming toward them and the other running in the way they’re facing. As they walk, they are being lashed by horned demons (in ancient times, people believed that if you cheated, you grew horns on your head.) As they goaded others in life, they are now being goaded in death.
Finally, remember that Lucifer is a perversion, a mockery of all God is. The three faces on one body mimic the Trinity, but are actually the polar opposites of the qualities described on the Gates of Hell (Divine Omnipotence-Extreme Helplessness, Supreme Intelligence-Deepest Ignorance, First Love-Ultimate Hatred.)
A few minor things...all the dead in Hell have knowledge of the far future on Earth (one of the gluttons proved this when he gave Dante a prophecy), but they don’t know anything of present time. A soul actually believed his son was dead because of Dante’s confusion about the topic. Medusa did not appear to Dante, but three furies called for her. In the fifth circle, there is another group of sinners under the Styx’s mud, the sullen, or the people who internalized their anger. As they choked on their anger in life, now they choke on the black mud of the Styx.
Last two things....what Dante calls “art” is really human industry.. The argument is that humans, by their nature, work for God...all they do is to exalt God. Therefore, their labor is dedicated to God, in a way. However, moneylending is not proper....with moneylending there is no labor involved...thus, it’s sinful. Also, the sinners in the third region of Cocytus aren’t on top of the ice (the poet is clear that the wind freezes things pretty quickly.) Rather, they are lying supine with their faces up. Since they’re eternally weeping, the wind freezes their tears and makes it look like they have crystal visors on. One last thing, the last zone in Hell is not for those traitorous to God specifically, but just traitorous to their lords.

is bad theology and a misunderstanding of what Excommunication is in that it forgets God is Sovereign.
The idea that you have posted would require God to go back on so many of his promises that would be totally against God's character so that it would be impossible for that to happen. God has said I will never leave or forsake you, In just about each book of the bible, and Jesus has said "I will never lose any you have given me, but one", and "None can shance any one form my hand." So the weight of the evidence in the bible is this understanding of Excommunication is not correct.

It was not merely the severing of the outward bond which holds individual to their place in the Church; it severed also the internal bond, and the sentence pronounced on earth was understood to be ratified in heaven."
So, while not accurate now, it once was accurate. And the fact you can beg and plead to have them ask god to forgive you doesn't change the fact they effectively told god what they decided.

One thing I should point out. Dante did NOT write this book in Italian. At this point, Latin had broken up into differing dialects that were spoken throughout Italy, and the Divine Comedy was written in the Florentine dialect. He did so in order that people in Florence who didn't know Latin could read his work. However, the poem was so popular that it was copied and spread throughout the Italian peninsula and people far from Florence learned this dialect to read this work. When Dante wrote the Divine Comedy, the language he was writing wasn't Italian, but as a result of him, it BECAME Italian. That's why Italians call Dante the "father of the Italian language."

Very good job! The Divine Comedy is the book I studied the most in my life, for over 20 years every day, it is extremely complicated, and it is not easy to find a summary as well done as yours in English.
There are some minor imprecisions though, let's name just a few:
    - Minos circles his tail around himself, not around the soul of the damned, in order to indicate where the convicted has to be incarcerated.
    - Pier delle Vigne, among suicides, is not a Florentine, he was from Capua (Naples) and was accused of having betrayed Frederick the Second Emperor, probably the most influential political figure of all Middle Ages.
    - Ulysses is burning together with Diomedes.
    - In Purgatory, among choleric souls, Dante speaks to the Venetian Marco Lombardo, pretty interesting, and in the sloth terrace to Gherardo II, abbot of San Zeno, who blames the costume of nepotism.
    - Virgil cannot, but Statius provides the solution to the riddle of how a soul can starve, and it is one of the most delusional and magnificent passages of the whole book.
    - A deeper respect for the figure of Beatrice is due, I am sorry.
Ok, I do not want to be too pedantic. Thank you for the excellent piece.

Professionals are called "Dantists", they are philologists and mostly work in Universities; I just want to have fun and I focus only on the topics I am interested in. Of course, after so much time, I accumulated certain knowledge. I know it could appear a nerdy waste of time, but on the other hand, I do not play videogames, for example, and I know nothing about sports. I just happen to like history and old Italian. Well, Adam and Eve didn't know the difference between good and evil before eating the fruit...though that just raises the question of how a being of infinite justice can see it right to punnish a couple of humans with the ethical understanding of infants (along with all of their descendents, who did nothing wrong) for eating something he put right in the middle of what amounts to their playpen.
Oh, and need I mention that Yahweh is omniscient, so would have known that they would eat from the tree.
The divine comedy still makes more sense ethically than the book is was based on.

Also, didn't the Early Church, and the Rabbis for that matter, view the whole thing as Allegorical?
Origen, who was quiet influential in Medieval Theology, wrote in the 2nd Century AD that this is a shadow of a Spiritual event. The coats of flesh Adam and Eve got from God? Those are the physical bodies we now have. The whole Eden thing was set in a Spirit World we can't really understand now and is set in an allegorical fashion.

The difference, in terms of Classical Christianity like Dante, is Adam repented and Satan did not.
Besides, Adam didn't go to Heaven till after the Harrowing Of Hell, so he went to Hell first.
With that said, many Christians, and Jews generally, see Satan as less God's adversary, and more as God's prosecuting attorney here to make sure we Truly Love God. Its less that he's Evil and more than tempting us is his job.

This book is what actually influenced both church doctrines and the divine satire. Not the other way around. Dante mixed Greek mythology with already pre existing Christian concepts.

I'm personally fond of this particular plane:
Picture a subterranean mesa, bordering a massive rockfall, the likes of the niagara falls, but without the water. Above hangs a greying ceiling of stalactites,
--while below congeal countless creatures, no longer quite animal, but not quite plant--a panoply of merging, morphing, spongy, moldlike-fungal forms, in writhing shades of venom purple and grey-violet--digesting and disgorging one another's forms in a state of slithering bliss--fused with the cave floor like some manner of undulating colony. Ovine features, human frames, porcine girth, reptilian scales, giraffe necks and tongues, an endless array of shifting shapes, in a gaseous, sooty cavern, lit by a distant, pale white fog that is neither quite sunlit nor concealing any form of artificial light. Untouched by any sort of social order, just a mass of beings 'changing' into one another, unaccompanied by any sort of pain or feelings of volition--just endless consumption and prompt rebirth from one orifice or another, with the occasional untouched creature--perhaps occasionally a human--tumbling in and joining the tainted, carnal mass.
I'm fairly sure that's the 69th circle of hentai-furry heavenhell. (They're so messed up that you can't even divide the two into extremes.)

    People talking about Inferno:
    People talking about CastleVania:
"Why is there always random Greek stuff?"
    Games = Art, proven.
