It amazes me how my mind forgets so many of these things, but finding videos like yours reminds me what I keep forgetting day in and out. Thank you much.
Its great that Liron does not assume that people know about restore or backup options and actually shows it at the beginning when mucking about the OS.
You can save time scrolling through a lot of files by doing this: If the file you are looking for begins with "s" press the keyboard "s" key and it will take you to all the files beginning with that letter. Then scroll down to the specific file and press "enter" to open it.
but if you're fast enough at typing, and you know some of the letters beyond s, like, say, sillystrings.txt....... if you can type si or sil or sill fast enough, you'll get to *the* file you're looking for.
If you don't have Liron's level of computer literacy, I highly recommend doing a *full image backup* in addition to setting a system restore point before starting this. It takes longer, but can fix almost anything that can go wrong. There's no guarantee that system restore will work in every situation.
@Sahil Bhandari My experience (20+ years) with system restore shows it to be unreliable, even in simple situations. To the point where I don't use it at all any more. Better to be safe.
@Sahil Bhandari Quoted from another commenter "Your advice is going to be helpful to most people, but it completely wrecks things for anybody using XBox Game Pass on PC in such a way that System Restore cannot help." Image backups are great for when restore points won't fix problems.
Wish I'd read this comment before I tried Liron's suggestions. I set a system restore beforehand, tried his suggestions and stuff started crashing. went for the restore and most of my apps, all of my saved bookmarks and passwords are now gone. Disk Cleanup does much of this automatically when you run it... It does leave a few things behind, but it is much better for people not sure about doing this stuff, or don't want to install third party stuff.

@@LironSegev Hey Liron, this comment is regarding your MTU settings vid from about a year ago but Ive found that UA-camrs get better notifications on their newer content so Im commenting here instead: After following your directions, I determined I should be at 1495. So I jumped ahead one step & checked what the current setting was. It was set at 1500, so that was too big. How did that number get originally setup incorrectly, by the router maybe? SO, I tried to set it to 1495 w/the word WiFi within the parenthesis' as you showed. It told me the syntax was wrong. After 4-5 tries I typed in Wireless Network Connection instead and it processed further than it previously had telling me the parameters, but that the syntax was still incorrect. Bummer. I purchased a copy of System Mechanic years ago and it maxed out my processor so I had to delete it. The version I had ran constantly in the background and my CPU fan was running constantly. When I deleted it my computer returned to normal. I don't know if the developers have addressed this issue but it made me so angry I never wanted to try it again.
There's one more thing you can do to speed up your computer. Every browser, and most large programs, like Microsoft Office, use a software program to update the application, keeping it fresh and exciting. However, many updating programs run every hour of every day, regardless of whether there is an update. The programs are started by the Window scheduler. Simply and meticulously go through every entry looking for these hourly cycle hogs and change the setting to a once-a-day trigger. The browsers and large programs will still update to the latest version, but without interfering with your TV time, games, or actual work.
I allocate 1gb as ramdisk and change cache/temp variable to Z:\ ramdisk. Once shut down, all cache/temp files are automatically deleted. Furthermore, it saves SSD life a little as all these files are not written on SSD and it also makes browser run faster when it needs to access cache files.
Thanks for mostly great advice. I did have an issue with trying to purchase System Mechanic, they insisted that I upgrade and pay a monthly fee. My understanding was that initially there was a one time charge but the salesperson would not relent so I was forced to be abrupt and hang-up I uninstalled the program and will cancel the credit card payment. This is not an indictment of the product just the sales/tech person.
We are sorry to hear about your negative experience with our contact center. The representative's response is not accurate, and more so, their behavior is in clear violation of our policies. I've been using System Mechanic since 2008. I miss some of the older versions, especially the 2008 one. I especially miss the "gadgets" that Windows used to have and the SM gadget the software installed along with it, so you could see your system status at all times.
However, there was one area that didn't see a performance boost: internet speed. Iolo claims that System Mechanic can speed up your PC's internet connection via its NetBooster feature, but I didn't see a significant improvement that couldn't be explained by normal fluctuations when I ran Speedtest by Ookla.
That's just what it's called sometimes. If you ordered 100/100 internet speed from your ISP operator, you will have that speed and programs cannot change that speed. Internet speed is set for your location / username by your ISP Operator and has nothing to do with your computer or devices. Programs can change how the webpage opens, how the browser will use the Internet connection, ping optimization etc. If you ordered Internet Speed 100/100 and the Speed Test shows only 90/80, yes, it is possible that such optimizations can help. When the Internet is not in use! Of course Speed Test is done like this. 1) Turn off all devices from the modem (Wi-Fi and Cables) When all devices are turned off... 2) Turn off the modem for at least 30 seconds ( power supply from the wall ). A) Also restart your computer 3) Wait for the computer to boot into the OS and the modem to establish an Internet connection ( Lights on the modem ). 4) Now connect the computer and the modem with a cable. !Do not connect other devices! 5) Once your computer is connected to the Internet, open the Speed Test website and select your ISP Operator for the speed test. Speedtest by Ookla will definitely have your ISP listed. This is the best internet speed test website as server distance is very important for accurate measurement. If the internet speed is not the same as the one you ordered or almost the same, do the same test later or next day and if the difference is still very large, call your ISP operator. You can try speed test on another computer to be sure. A cable connection is required for accurate measurement. If you cannot change the server, the internet speed test website is useless because the measurement will not be accurate.

Thanks for such a thorough explanation! I was going through the situation where running cleanmgr.exe didn't clear out all temporary files. So I searched and was able to come up with deleting the temp, %temp%, software distribution files, and prefetch files, before I discovered your channel, which helped even more!
I wish I could get a written copy of everything you just said. I had to run and rerun everything a couple of times. If I had a hard copy, I could proceed at my own pace. Sometimes my brain runs slower than my computer.

Space Sniffer is a free tool that breaks your file sizes up into blocks making it easy to identify where all your space is going. But don't just delete files if you don't know what they are!
If your computer is not meant to work 24/7 as a server, your HD computer will colapse in half the time you should be using it, so yes, you should restart it and then shut it down
Every PC i had I never turned off. The last time I turned off my PC was about 2 years ago ( besides restarting when needed ) and everything is copacetic.IT'S better NOT to ever turn off your PC.
idk if any IT Guy can relate with or not but anyways. I have a question for all those Tech Tutorial UA-cam Guys out there : Let say you are at Point A & you want to reach a point F then why tf do you have to travel all the way to the points B,C,D,E. ?????? you can directly jump from point A to F Simple.
I'm only 30 seconds into a video for saving space and the first piece of advice is to recreate a system restore point (effectively a copy of your windows installation directory) which are notorious for consuming drive space! He then proceeds to pointlessly explain how to delete lots of windows files which can be cleaned in a matter of seconds with most freeware drive cleaning apps and tries to sell one. A true IT pro would always recommend freeware in this instance, why should someone pay for something which can be done as well for free? Modern SSD and NVME support a function called TRIM. The purpose of this function is to optimise the drive to put the most frequently accessed files together at the start of the drive(fastest point of the drive). This is why an SSD or NVME should always have 25% or more space free(this would have been nice to include), it needs to swap files around and without the space cannot do it quickly enough, if your old enough or still use HDD think defragmentation just on the fly with prioritisation. Prefetch also makes use of this space, so if you do the same tasks over and over again, I would not recommend delete prefetch too much.
Yes I deleted all those garbage windows files and went to linux ages ago. Got tired of playing whack-a-mole with windows update and debloat scripts. I understand some folks are stuck with windows; you have my condolences.
if you are worried about junk files, but have Windows 10 or 11, you need to just delete the whole entire operating system and install something else. Anything after windows 10 is a garbage file in itself.
an easier way to get to appdata local folder you dont have to go out of the roaming and into local instead type in %localappdata% and it takes you stright there
tysm for this vid! I've been trying to delete some unwanted junks in my laptop, and the softwaredistribution and downloads just gave me a lot of storage when i deleted it! tysm!!
Disk Cleanup makes computer run faster. However, you must run it as Administrator. The Option to run it as Administrator shows up on the right sight when you type disk clean up. You can also right-click, and choose - run as Administrator. If you don't run as Administrator. it will not remove old Device Drivers that are slowing your system down.
Wow! Thanks for all of the info. I didn't need to use the spotify one since I've never used that program (or whatever it is). The very last one about clearing browsing data I couldn't do because I never use Chrome. I know you said all of the browser are the same with this menu, but I use Firefox and there was no "Clear browsing data" option in the "more tools" section. Everything thing else worked though. Thanks loads. :)
7:57 Also in %appdata% if you have been doing restore points on your apple device then there could be loads of big files here that can be removed; but only remove the old ones you don’t need.

Your advice is going to be helpful to most people, but it completely wrecks things for anybody using XBox Game Pass on PC in such a way that System Restore cannot help. It's hard to fix the issues that result, because all the usual immediate ideas (uninstall/reinstall the Xbox app, remove your MS signin and re-enter your account info, sfc /scannow, etc etc)... none of that is going to work, and the user just won't be able to sign in. They'll need admin privileges and Powershell commands to fix the issues, and might need to find out how to reset the Store app. Please let people know upfront that they shouldn't do this if they use Game Pass.
@@LironSegev I don't know which specific files do it, but it could be anything in the "Microsoft" or "Xbox" folders (or perhaps something else entirely?). Your advice is generally great, and the problem will only affect some tiny percentage of users, but if they're using the Xbox app then they'll need to delete folders selectively rather than just emptying the whole contents. Part of getting it working involved restarting and reenabling three key Xbox Services, if that gives you any ideas of what goes wrong?
@@joechapman8208 Sounds like Xbox (and probably other apps) are storing some data in temp files/folders that they should be instead storing in a data folder. They're misusing the temp folder. Hmm.
The easiest way to speed up your machine is to create a new user in windows. This will give a fresh start with a new registry! All these recommendations work. Dont forget to stop startup apps, the best app to use for that is autoruns from microsoft.
In days gone by, after doing all the cleanup of these various unnecessary files, etc., we would run Disk Defragment. Has that gone by the wayside and no longer necessary? Oh yeah, and all of this followed by a reoot.
Very comprehe, nsive. Norton regularly tells me I have gb of files slowing me down. I use advice like yours to try and delete them. Next month I get another similar message from Norton!!!
Do they sell non-counterfeit Samsng NIB SSDs where you are at? I cant believe but Serial is 1digit off from box vs. chip from a recent purchase. BIOS reads but Win OS nope.
Thanks for the tips! I used a similar program called Auslogics, but it ended up messing up some of my system files. What are the chances of System Mechanic doing the same?
Well I got to say this was a great video. Followed all steps and things are working great. Thank you for your help. Where can I get information on how to do a system image? Thank you.
One can still SET Environment Variables TMP & TEMP to point to the same convenient C:\ (or whichever your fastest drive is)FLURBLEzzz or whatever. Then One has only one step to wipe them all. DO NOT FREAK when a TEMP File is 'In Use' and will not delete, please.
do NOT delete all older "restorepoints" they dont take space and a lot of Restorepoints dont work! So u need some "backup" i suggest to at least do a manual restorepoint once amonth and name them with a significant name with date.
so everyone's restore point is going to be different based on their system. So for you they may not take up a lot of space, but for others its Gigabytes. If you are going back to very early restore points, are you prepared to redo everything you did from that point onwards? When you have a really active system, restoring a month old system point, actually causes more issues. But as I said, everyone is different. You do you.
Thanks kind sir for all of your contributions. My takeaway is that it would be super duper helpful if you provided durations, along w/the the tasks. eg: Doing this may take up to 'x' mins to complete, and you will need to restart. Or 'save like this video and find it after restarting in your youtube history. Something like that. Anyways, you rock! And I've learned plenty from you.
This would be difficult to determine from one pc to the next depending on whether it has gone through these steps before. The first item on the pc I am.working on took for ages, it had over 2000 files and required special permission almost constantly. The disk cleanup step has taken over 20 minutes as I respond to your post.
It amazes me how my mind forgets so many of these things, but finding videos like yours reminds me what I keep forgetting day in and out. Thank you much.

Space Sniffer is a free tool that breaks your file sizes up into blocks making it easy to identify where all your space is going. But don't just delete files if you don't know what they are!
real statement begins fromm BUT!!
For someone like me who knows nothing about computers, Thank you so much I have learnt so much I didn’t know. You are a star
Incredibly relevant! Thanks Liron. Cleaning up restore points was a massive gain in space. Saving this vid for sure 🙂
this guy is on another level about technology
From your first video I find your subjects so interesting and useful and educational. I immediately subscribed. More power to you
new subscriber here thank you sir, your tutorial tips is clear and informative godbless you
If your computer is not meant to work 24/7 as a server, your HD computer will colapse in half the time you should be using it, so yes, you should restart it and then shut it down
Every PC i had I never turned off.
My Fav IT Guy Always straight to the know with no dilly dally :)
Yes I deleted all those garbage windows files and went to linux ages ago. Got tired of playing whack-a-mole with windows update and debloat scripts. I understand some folks are stuck with windows; you have my condolences.
When I switched to Linux it came with its own set of issues too. Nothing is perfect for everyone all the time.
You are correct my friend . . . This is scaring the hell out of me to attempt this.
%Appdata% opens explorer to the roaming folder where you have to backtrack to get to local. %Localappdata% saves those couple of steps.
A First Class tutorial as ever ! Many thansk Liron.
My pleasure!
if you are worried about junk files, but have Windows 10 or 11, you need to just delete the whole entire operating system and install something else. Anything after windows 10 is a garbage file in itself.
an easier way to get to appdata local folder you dont have to go out of the roaming and into local instead type in %localappdata% and it takes you stright there
yup! thanks for that 👍
Very useful info! Question -Wouldn't Disk Cleanup accomplish the same (by also selecting "System File Cleanup")?
Very helpful. Thank you for explaining everything quickly and efficiently.
Bootup time after restart is less than 8 seconds. ;)
tysm for this vid!
My computer has never been so clean. Always great advice. Thx for sharing.
"Advanced Systemcare" by IOBIT is great for cleaning up and is free to download.
excellent tutorial, thanks so much, will be doing this to all 3 of my pc's. just excellent!!

Also in %appdata% if you have been doing restore points on your apple device then there could be loads of big files here that can be removed; but only remove the old ones you don’t need.
I love you no-nonsense videos - it will be great if you can do a video on onedrive management - my onedrive keeps getting stuck one preparing to upload - I've resetting and other tips to no avail - cheers from Sydney, Australia 🙂
This is amazing, thanks so much I got back 13G of space on my hard drive and learnt something never because i've never knowm how to improve the performance. I will say the disck clean up too ages so I knew it must have needed it
After watching this video and reading the comments, I am really glad I switched to Linux 4 years ago.
Please let people know upfront that they shouldn't do this if they use Game Pass.
dang - I don't game but that sounds insane. I am curious why deleting temp files will impact Game Pass?
Hmm.
Love this guy, always 100 percent trust his knowledge and always gets me through these situations smoothly. Thanks a million!
Really appreciate you being here 🔥
It made me free up some space! The prefetch Windows files is the unused files.
The easiest way to speed up your machine is to create a new user in windows. This will give a fresh start with a new registry! All these recommendations work. Dont forget to stop startup apps, the best app to use for that is autoruns from microsoft.
Awesome post Liron! 2 or 3 I didn't know about. Thank you mate!
No problem 👍
Great work!! Can I ask what software you used to do the animations to your videos? I need to get that! (mostly the arrows)
Awesome channel, learned a lot of super useful things
Glad to help!
You're an absolute legend, helped me out a lot with your easy to follow video.
Superb info. Thank you very much
In days gone by, after doing all the cleanup of these various unnecessary files, etc., we would run Disk Defragment. Has that gone by the wayside and no longer necessary? Oh yeah, and all of this followed by a reoot.
from what i recall, defragmenting a solid state drive makes no sense and can actually reduce lifespan
I use steam for my games
... my linux sbc for litteraly anything else
needless to say things have become a lot more quieter around here
Very comprehe, nsive. Norton regularly tells me I have gb of files slowing me down. I use advice like yours to try and delete them. Next month I get another similar message from Norton!!!
Most useful video, I’ve learned a lot, thank you!
Well, that was useful! I managed to clear about 4GB of clutter on a 64GB drive. Huge difference! Thank you very much
This saved me from needing to buy another SSD for my desktop. :D
Do they sell non-counterfeit Samsng NIB SSDs where you are at? I cant believe but Serial is 1digit off from box vs. chip from a recent purchase. BIOS reads but Win OS nope.
Thanks Liron
Awesome video! I liked
Here to mentioned, it made me smile to hear about Spotify (Not everyone uses that services)
Thanks for the tips! I used a similar program called Auslogics, but it ended up messing up some of my system files. What are the chances of System Mechanic doing the same?
Yeah, Auslogics F***ed up one of my pcs
Well I got to say this was a great video. Followed all steps and things are working great. Thank you for your help. Where can I get information on how to do a system image? Thank you.
One can still SET Environment Variables TMP & TEMP to point to the same convenient C:\ (or whichever your fastest drive is)FLURBLEzzz or whatever.
Then One has only one step to wipe them all.
DO NOT FREAK when a TEMP File is 'In Use' and will not delete, please.
How to delete your whole system:
Do not try this. This will effect your system, use modified versions of windows instead
Hardly ever did I have any luck restore windows from a restore point.
Very Nice Sir. Its like cleaning my house but virtual
Jazakallahul Khairan brother 🌿it helped alot
Your super informative and easy to understand videos definetelly warrant a Subscribe
It's so funny because the restore points themselves were the things that ate up most of my disk space 😅
Excellent video, thanks. One remark though: Cleandisk did not scan and delete my previous windows folder (windows.old).
Any thoughts on that?
Excellent tips. Thank you so much. Your explanations are easy to follow.
do NOT delete all older "restorepoints" they dont take space and a lot of Restorepoints dont work! So u need some "backup"
i suggest to at least do a manual restorepoint once amonth and name them with a significant name with date.
learn to use a File explorer which is able to show all "Hidden files" + the SIZE of any Directory.
Yes. I've needed previous restore points, and they didn't work. One time, I had to go much further back than I liked in an attempt to fix a problem.
so everyone's restore point is going to be different based on their system. So for you they may not take up a lot of space, but for others its Gigabytes.
If you are going back to very early restore points, are you prepared to redo everything you did from that point onwards?
When you have a really active system, restoring a month old system point, actually causes more issues.
But as I said, everyone is different. You do you.
@@LironSegev Everyone’s a little different, huh? Sounds somewhat racist. I thought we were all human beans.
@@hxd9321 can you even read? If that is how you read that, that is 100% on you
Great channel ! Thank you for your tips and tricks
Appreciate you being here 🔥
Thank you, this was beyond helpful!
Appreciate you being here 🔥
Great video I'll look into system mechanics but what about Glary Utility? Also is system mechanics buy in full or is it year to year?
Brilliant information! Thank you so much!
Appreciate you being here 🔥
thanks alot brother. you helped me alot for real!
this video couldn't be better! thank you for saving me 20+ gigs!
Let's gooooo 🔥🔥🔥 don't forget to sub 😂
