Its great that Liron does not assume that people know about restore or backup options and actually shows it at the beginning when mucking about the OS.
You can save time scrolling through a lot of files by doing this: If the file you are looking for begins with "s" press the keyboard "s" key and it will take you to all the files beginning with that letter. Then scroll down to the specific file and press "enter" to open it.
but if you're fast enough at typing, and you know some of the letters beyond s, like, say, sillystrings.txt....... if you can type si or sil or sill fast enough, you'll get to *the* file you're looking for.
If you don't have Liron's level of computer literacy, I highly recommend doing a *full image backup* in addition to setting a system restore point before starting this. It takes longer, but can fix almost anything that can go wrong. There's no guarantee that system restore will work in every situation.
@Sahil Bhandari My experience (20+ years) with system restore shows it to be unreliable, even in simple situations. To the point where I don't use it at all any more. Better to be safe.
@Sahil Bhandari Quoted from another commenter "Your advice is going to be helpful to most people, but it completely wrecks things for anybody using XBox Game Pass on PC in such a way that System Restore cannot help." Image backups are great for when restore points won't fix problems.

I kept pausing to follow your directions through the video because you were moving along quickly, but I appreciate you not dragging directions out to make the video longer. Disk Cleanup does much of this automatically when you run it... It does leave a few things behind, but it is much better for people not sure about doing this stuff, or don't want to install third party stuff.
Yes, those temp files are used by programs, but as I like to say, sometimes they forget to pick up their toys when they're done. Then we need to do what you're describing.
I allocate 1gb as ramdisk and change cache/temp variable to Z:\ ramdisk. Once shut down, all cache/temp files are automatically deleted. Furthermore, it saves SSD life a little as all these files are not written on SSD and it also makes browser run faster when it needs to access cache files.

@@LironSegev Hey Liron, this comment is regarding your MTU settings vid from about a year ago but Ive found that UA-camrs get better notifications on their newer content so Im commenting here instead: After following your directions, I determined I should be at 1495. So I jumped ahead one step & checked what the current setting was. It was set at 1500, so that was too big. How did that number get originally setup incorrectly, by the router maybe? SO, I tried to set it to 1495 w/the word WiFi within the parenthesis' as you showed. It told me the syntax was wrong. After 4-5 tries I typed in Wireless Network Connection instead and it processed further than it previously had telling me the parameters, but that the syntax was still incorrect. Bummer. I sent you an email with the screenshot. I appreciate your time. Thanks!
I purchased a copy of System Mechanic years ago and it maxed out my processor so I had to delete it. The version I had ran constantly in the background and my CPU fan was running constantly. When I deleted it my computer returned to normal. I don't know if the developers have addressed this issue but it made me so angry I never wanted to try it again.
However, there was one area that didn't see a performance boost: internet speed. Iolo claims that System Mechanic can speed up your PC's internet connection via its NetBooster feature, but I didn't see a significant improvement that couldn't be explained by normal fluctuations when I ran Speedtest by Ookla.
That's just what it's called sometimes. If you ordered 100/100 internet speed from your ISP operator, you will have that speed and programs cannot change that speed. Internet speed is set for your location / username by your ISP Operator and has nothing to do with your computer or devices. Programs can change how the webpage opens, how the browser will use the Internet connection, ping optimization etc. If you ordered Internet Speed 100/100 and the Speed Test shows only 90/80, yes, it is possible that such optimizations can help. When the Internet is not in use! Of course Speed Test is done like this. 1) Turn off all devices from the modem (Wi-Fi and Cables) When all devices are turned off... 2) Turn off the modem for at least 30 seconds ( power supply from the wall ). A) Also restart your computer 3) Wait for the computer to boot into the OS and the modem to establish an Internet connection ( Lights on the modem ). 4) Now connect the computer and the modem with a cable. !Do not connect other devices! 5) Once your computer is connected to the Internet, open the Speed Test website and select your ISP Operator for the speed test. Speedtest by Ookla will definitely have your ISP listed. This is the best internet speed test website as server distance is very important for accurate measurement. If the internet speed is not the same as the one you ordered or almost the same, do the same test later or next day and if the difference is still very large, call your ISP operator. You can try speed test on another computer to be sure. A cable connection is required for accurate measurement. If you cannot change the server, the internet speed test website is useless because the measurement will not be accurate.

There's one more thing you can do to speed up your computer. Every browser, and most large programs, like Microsoft Office, use a software program to update the application, keeping it fresh and exciting. However, many updating programs run every hour of every day, regardless of whether there is an update. The programs are started by the Window scheduler. Simply and meticulously go through every entry looking for these hourly cycle hogs and change the setting to a once-a-day trigger. The browsers and large programs will still update to the latest version, but without interfering with your TV time, games, or actual work.

That disk cleanup part is a little scarier. I don't know much about how computers work, so I don't know what I'd need to keep... Is getting a "file in use" error when I want to move a file because of deleting one of the things in this video?
Thanks for the tips! I used a similar program called Auslogics, but it ended up messing up some of my system files. What are the chances of System Mechanic doing the same?

Your advice is going to be helpful to most people, but it completely wrecks things for anybody using XBox Game Pass on PC in such a way that System Restore cannot help. It's hard to fix the issues that result, because all the usual immediate ideas (uninstall/reinstall the Xbox app, remove your MS signin and re-enter your account info, sfc /scannow, etc etc)... none of that is going to work, and the user just won't be able to sign in. They'll need admin privileges and Powershell commands to fix the issues, and might need to find out how to reset the Store app. Please let people know upfront that they shouldn't do this if they use Game Pass.
@@LironSegev I don't know which specific files do it, but it could be anything in the "Microsoft" or "Xbox" folders (or perhaps something else entirely?). Your advice is generally great, and the problem will only affect some tiny percentage of users, but if they're using the Xbox app then they'll need to delete folders selectively rather than just emptying the whole contents. Part of getting it working involved restarting and reenabling three key Xbox Services, if that gives you any ideas of what goes wrong?
@@joechapman8208 Sounds like Xbox (and probably other apps) are storing some data in temp files/folders that they should be instead storing in a data folder. They're misusing the temp folder. Hmm.

Hi Lirov. Quick question. Sometimes when I boot up my PC I get a black screen with a 9c error code in the bottom left. Aparently this is an inability of the motherboard to get fully powered. Using the reset button usually helps to boot the pc properly after I see the error. I've searched for solutions online, but nothing I've tried has worked. My Power Supply is powerful enough, and fairly recent, though my motherboard is over 6 years old. Is this a sign I need to change it soon? Do you have any in depth guide to troubleshoot it? Could it be a shutdown software issue? Uncleared caches or something alike? Already tried disconnecting all peripheral devices to see if any of them causes this.
Feature update to Windows 10, version 20H2 (2), Last failed install attempt on 7/2/2022 - 0xc1900101 been trying to get this update for a long time do you have any ideas on getting this windows update
did you ever create a manual restore point? If you didn't than that's why. Also use Disc Cleanup and choose System files to see what Windows is saving that you can safely delete
do NOT delete all older "restorepoints" they dont take space and a lot of Restorepoints dont work! So u need some "backup" i suggest to at least do a manual restorepoint once amonth and name them with a significant name with date.
so everyone's restore point is going to be different based on their system. So for you they may not take up a lot of space, but for others its Gigabytes. If you are going back to very early restore points, are you prepared to redo everything you did from that point onwards? When you have a really active system, restoring a month old system point, actually causes more issues. But as I said, everyone is different. You do you.
Hoping you can clarify something for me. A few weeks ago I followed 3 or 4 of your videos to increase internet speed involving some router and pc settings. Now however I got a Verizon 5g Home Internet Gateway, I don't see the same router settings as previously, are cellular data internet settings able to be tweeked as I did via your videos?
Couldn't the %temp% folder have files from an incomplete install or update (pending reboot)? Maybe a reboot should be done before cleaning out that folder.
Thanks but as soon as you cleaned them all up... it starts to refill again as you go out to perform your daily usual task 9basically rinse and keep repeating. a batch file would be nice.
One can still SET Environment Variables TMP & TEMP to point to the same convenient C:\ (or whichever your fastest drive is)FLURBLEzzz or whatever. Then One has only one step to wipe them all. DO NOT FREAK when a TEMP File is 'In Use' and will not delete, please.
if you are worried about junk files, but have Windows 10 or 11, you need to just delete the whole entire operating system and install something else. Anything after windows 10 is a garbage file in itself.
It amazes me how my mind forgets so many of these things, but finding videos like yours reminds me what I keep forgetting day in and out. Thank you much.

I wonder if maybe deleting the TEMP folder it's self (make a backup copy somewhere though) might help, No TEMP folder it has no where to be stashing junk again.
I use steam for my games
... my linux sbc for litteraly anything else
needless to say things have become a lot more quieter around here
You sir just got a new sub! Love your vids!
From your first video I find your subjects so interesting and useful and educational. I immediately subscribed. More power to you
there's an issue with the restore point. I have a 500gb ssd. At 1% it should register at the megabyte level but it's giving me gigabytes instead.
Can I create a restore point if I get a message that my battery needs to be replaced? Am I disadvantaged in any way if I do this with my laptop in this condition? I've just recently found your vlog and I just love its practical ideas! Thanks for any help or pointers you can provide!!
I thought I knew how to reduce those unwanted files and craps that Microsoft been giving us, I came across and found your video easy to use without any complicated. Microsoft has been and always will give us craps that use up our hard drive. Thank you Liron for your best. You made my day Sir! Thank you!
Thanks for such a thorough explanation! I was going through the situation where running cleanmgr.exe didn't clear out all temporary files. So I searched and was able to come up with deleting the temp, %temp%, software distribution files, and prefetch files, before I discovered your channel, which helped even more!
Yeah, Auslogics F***ed up one of my pcs
"Advanced Systemcare" by IOBIT is great for cleaning up and is free to download.
Does it mean something that I have used Spotify for years and I did not find the folder in "appdata" at all?
I have the same issue. I've used Spotify for years and it's not in 'appdata' - 'local'. Looking forward to an answer for this.
It won't allow it a pop up 'can not delete edge is open ' but nothing is open
3:20 why run and not just go to folder from file explorer? 🤔
Great video!
Let me ask you this..Is there a way to transfer downloaded games, from a computer to an external hard drive?..If so how can i do that?
I wish I could get a written copy of everything you just said. I had to run and rerun everything a couple of times. If I had a hard copy, I could proceed at my own pace. Sometimes my brain runs slower than my computer.
Hi Alan. I'm using my phone and if I expand the description of the video and scroll down I can access the transcript of the video. I'm not sure about printing it but you could always copy and paste it into a word document.
QQQ every time I shut down a message says that “there are others who are on so do I want to shut down anyway” what does that mean to me as I am at home and don’t have any one using my machine… no one lives with me either. Thx!
I’m retired.
Could you do a video on Ownership for internal and external Hard disks please ? Permissions and such, all very confusing. Thank You
Microsoft Store and Microsoft Photos are not working--a window pops up then quickly closes. How to fix?
Disk Cleanup makes computer run faster. However, you must run it as Administrator. The Option to run it as Administrator shows up on the right sight when you type disk clean up. You can also right-click, and choose - run as Administrator. If you don't run as Administrator. it will not remove old Device Drivers that are slowing your system down.
%Appdata% opens explorer to the roaming folder where you have to backtrack to get to local. %Localappdata% saves those couple of steps.
A First Class tutorial as ever ! Many thansk Liron.
My pleasure!
I am unable to delete any file or folder from the Temp directory for some reason. Whenever I attempt to do so, File Explorer hangs and I have to restart it with the task manager.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I got 30GB back! So clear, straight forward, uncomplicated. Brilliant!😘
Let's goooo 🔥
In addition, I often run the Defragment and Optimize feature to speed up my computer
What about W7 ? As if nobody is using that anymore ? A lot of settings explained here can't be found on W7. Ordered Mechanic and hope it still works on W7
Great work!! Can I ask what software you used to do the animations to your videos? I need to get that! (mostly the arrows)
My Fav IT Guy Always straight to the know with no dilly dally :)
7:29 ...maybe untick the "Download" folder if you have some downloaded files that you haven't taken use of just yet - I would say.
Love this guy, always 100 percent trust his knowledge and always gets me through these situations smoothly. Thanks a million!
Really appreciate you being here 🔥
Disk cleanup never seems to remove thumbnails or temporary internet files. Any advice on how to get around this problem?
Did the disk cleanup but when I try to open disk cleanup again I cannot. What happened?
Please which pc software that enables you to delete files from a flash completely without leaving a trace...
What happens when the computer doesn't allow you to delete a file, and when in prefetch the same, but prefetch even after cleared repopulating files?
Your advice is going to be helpful to most people, but it completely wrecks things for anybody using XBox Game Pass on PC in such a way that System Restore cannot help. It's hard to fix the issues that result, because all the usual immediate ideas (uninstall/reinstall the Xbox app, remove your MS signin and re-enter your account info, sfc /scannow, etc etc)... none of that is going to work, and the user just won't be able to sign in. They'll need admin privileges and Powershell commands to fix the issues, and might need to find out how to reset the Store app. Please let people know upfront that they shouldn't do this if they use Game Pass.
dang - I don't game but that sounds insane. I am curious why deleting temp files will impact Game Pass?
Hmm.
excellent tutorial, thanks so much, will be doing this to all 3 of my pc's. just excellent!!
I have a question, there is somthing like defaultuser100001.desktop in my window 11 it is kinda takes alot of space and make my pc lag sis it dangerous to delete? Please I need a answer my computer is getting laggier each week
Can we do this same procedure on Windows 7? And my Windows 7 lap top is 32 bit. Does this mean that I can't use the system mechanics app?? Thank you.
Tried to follow this but clicking on local does not bring up the local C drop down menu
Please let us know how clean up an iPhone. I have an iPhone 11.
Feature update to Windows 10, version 20H2 (2), Last failed install attempt on 7/2/2022 - 0xc1900101 been trying to get this update for a long time do you have any ideas on getting this windows update
Nothing related to restore points comes up when I put Restore or any iteration thereof into the Search on windows 10. :(
did you ever create a manual restore point? If you didn't than that's why. Also use Disc Cleanup and choose System files to see what Windows is saving that you can safely delete
Awesome post Liron! 2 or 3 I didn't know about. Thank you mate!
No problem 👍
do NOT delete all older "restorepoints" they dont take space and a lot of Restorepoints dont work! So u need some "backup"
i suggest to at least do a manual restorepoint once amonth and name them with a significant name with date.
learn to use a File explorer which is able to show all "Hidden files" + the SIZE of any Directory.
Yes. I've needed previous restore points, and they didn't work. One time, I had to go much further back than I liked in an attempt to fix a problem.
so everyone's restore point is going to be different based on their system. So for you they may not take up a lot of space, but for others its Gigabytes.
If you are going back to very early restore points, are you prepared to redo everything you did from that point onwards?
When you have a really active system, restoring a month old system point, actually causes more issues.
But as I said, everyone is different. You do you.
@@LironSegev Everyone’s a little different, huh? Sounds somewhat racist. I thought we were all human beans.
@@hxd9321 can you even read? If that is how you read that, that is 100% on you
Do you have any advice for Debian Linux users?
Great video I'll look into system mechanics but what about Glary Utility? Also is system mechanics buy in full or is it year to year?
Appreciate the info. Question, can you do a video on how to install Firefox on a newer microsoft / edge operated laptop?! I can’t stand edge..
Can you help get rid of File Folders from the Downloads File? Is there an easy way to delete these? Thanks for your amazing videos.
Thanks but as soon as you cleaned them all up... it starts to refill again as you go out to perform your daily usual task 9basically rinse and keep repeating. a batch file would be nice.
thanks
with the help of your video I was able to delete more that 4 GB of useless data on my pc
Thanks, I followed the this video but now for some reason I can no longer run CMD as administrator?
One can still SET Environment Variables TMP & TEMP to point to the same convenient C:\ (or whichever your fastest drive is)FLURBLEzzz or whatever.
Then One has only one step to wipe them all.
DO NOT FREAK when a TEMP File is 'In Use' and will not delete, please.
For someone like me who knows nothing about computers, Thank you so much I have learnt so much I didn’t know. You are a star
i like pegasun i use it every time i turn on my computer i love the turbo mode it absolutely works are you familiar?
if you are worried about junk files, but have Windows 10 or 11, you need to just delete the whole entire operating system and install something else. Anything after windows 10 is a garbage file in itself.
new subscriber here thank you sir, your tutorial tips is clear and informative godbless you
