  • Colwin gives a step-by-step demonstration on making a small coffee table leg starting with the pummel (square section) then on to shaping. He looks at all the main spindle turning tools including; Skew, Spindle Gouge, Scraper, Roughing gouge, Parting Tool, and Bowl Gouge. He also takes a look at some simple spindle projects, a Lace Bobbin, and a Honey Dibber.

Thanks for a fantastic video lesson. As SteveD said the shots from above are excellent for beginners like myself to see the angles when cutting👍👏👏👏😃

Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and your passion for this aspect of wood turning. I have had a lathe for 20 some years and it has sat for about 20 of those. I made the mistake of buying a cheap lathe, and the spindle and tailstock never lined up , being off by up to a quarter inch. This made several operations difficult if not impossible. Boredom and UA-cam have rekindled my interest and I am looking forward to the purchase of a much better lathe and hoping that gentlemen like yourself can guide me through another start in this venture with fewer spectacular catches than the last time. Again, my most sincere thanks.

Thank you, having watched the series from your workshop which I must say I thought was brilliant this has the advantage of overhead shots and this helps us amateurs understand angles and tool presentation.long may you continue these videos.

It's a great table leg, if not a bit busy.

Excellent content. Amazed Axminster still can’t work a camera 🤯 so much blurring it’s unreal. The previous Axminster video I tried to watch (which was dated a year earlier) had exactly the same camera focus problem to the point it was unwatchable.

Very informative video. It would be great if your camera guy could do something about the focus (a fixed manual focus rather than variable auto-focus might be best) and do something about the 'film speed' to eliminate some of the blurring. It's important to see clearly what the instructor is doing both for enjoyment of the video and for safety. These technical issues are letting down the overall package, which is a shame because Colwin is a great instructor. The Woodworking Wisdom series is excellent. Much appreciated.

I think so many of the webcams have autofocus as the default that needs to be turned off or checked everytime you use. I have had that issue pop up enough times in my videos I usually remeber to check now. But it took a while to get to that point! Content is King and yours is great even if the production quality is still a bit rough around the edges!

So if I can't use a spindle roughing gouge on a bowl blank what do I use for roughing? Really enjoyed your teaching.

Hi PJ Seiber, the following reply is from Colwin - "So this is all the domain of the Bowl gouge, watch on Tuesday and I will explain this in detail.
Drop the bowl gouge handle and turn the flute over to point the direction you want to move."

While they sort out the live feed Colwin, you might ask them to fix the lighting, it was far better in your shed...

@@axminster Don't get me wrong, they've been great all last year. It's just that the lighting is a bit glare-y at the moment.
(In case you're taking suggestions, the questions are also hard to hear because the person reading them isn't mic'd up ).
Thanks for the hard work by the way, these videos are much appreciated.

The audio is very dull and muffled, try boosting the treble. For those of us with old ears the higher frequencies are the ones we lose first so they need boosting.

Thoroughly enjoying the demonstration, but the video is not up to what it used to be. Poor (Auto?) focus on occasions, and sometimes not framed correctly. Apologies if I seem to be whinging, but that is not my intention. Also sometimes the 'voice' asking the questions is quite faint. Keep up the good work Colwin.
