Thanks for the video. I've been turning for over 10 years but I frequently watch tutorials because I keep learning or refreshing my knowledge! Keep up coming.
Thanks for taking the time to slow down the cut so that we could see how it as it occurred. I particularly liked how you highlighted what part of the front edge was actually cutting. "A picture is worth a thousand words."
I have been having trouble with my spindle gouges with catches. When I use my bowl gouges I do not have the same problem. This video is helping me figure out what I may be doing wrong. I think I am taking to agressive of a cut with the spindle gouge, where as the bowl gouge tends to allow a more agressive cut. Thanks for the video, it is very helpful.
I enjoy all of your videos, Shawn, but I was ready for some turning. Thanks for the deeper understanding. That's what helps other revelations or concepts become clear. Trailer is looking great, so far, also.
Very helpful. My first lathe is not really setup for bowls. Even the tool rest is the full length of the lathe. I finally know what tools I need, in addition to the two I have. Now finding well made and great steel and great price???? I haven't even got a permanent spot for my lathe yet, but am planning to use our wood splitter to section up some blanks from the bucked logs. I realized this will be super easy a wood splitter with a large knife edged splitting wedge. I can get these blanks made up ahead of my shop renovations, as it will just be a matter of splitting some differently and tossing the bits into various piles. I still need a couple turning tools yet, so no hurry to get the lathe set up....although I am getting anxious :-) I already want a better lathe lol
This is very helpful. Thank you. I’m terrible with the spindle gouge. I can use a bowl gouge with an Irish grind without a problem but with a similar grind on a spindle gouge I get catches. Any advise you can give I would greatly appreciate. Dan
Awesome video as always. Your teaching style is right on point for me. Have you ever thought about doing classes again. Online or in class. Can you do more of these with any other tool? Very new to turning learned most that I know by watching YT and practicing what I have seen.
Thanks for the great video. Practicing these will make me a better turner. I especially appreciate the tip on rolling beads and what part of your cutting edge to use.
This was great - thanks for posting. I think I've got the basics down well, but sometimes random problems crop up. I've been thinking I just need more muscle memory/practice for consistency. But these tips give me some next level things to pay attention to. Your description of where on the tool the cuts are occurring and the close camera work are really helpful.
Love your teaching style, have learned so much. I'm in Canada, about an hours drive from where the Oneway lathes are manufactured. How do you like yours?
Shawn, wonderful video on spindle gouge use. Looks like your tool rest is above center, as usually used for skew work. Is that just camera angle or intentional? I like your deliberate teaching style and explanations.
I want suggestions do first cuts to do when very new to turning. What to focus on to improve. First few wood species to use and not get frustrated. Worried I will not get any good results because of wood selection. Very curious about acrylic blanks and whatever resin blanks I see at the stores.
How about how to sharpen everyones favorite tool "the Skew"...both the straight edge and curved edged.... This tool is the devil for me and I really think its because I'm not sharpening the tool correctly... Thanks for all your lessons...
After watching you for la last 5 years, i finally took a woodturning class and turn my first mallet last week.
Thanks Shawn for taking the time to show a couple of “trade secret” tip that get either glossed over or flat out omitted. Thanks again. Cheers, Tom
Thanks for making spindle gouge usage a bit clearer

Good call with the like reminder. I always forget to like a video. 👍

Thanks for the great tips. I could use any tips you got. You do a great job explaining things. You also make it look so simple
Thank you. After I watched your video about how to make tops, I made a bunch! I learned a lot about handling the spindle gauge at the same time.
glad you're finally getting the lightning and microphones worked out in the new shop. Great tip video, thank you for sharing.
Lighting is same.
@@wortheffort maybe so but seemed great today. Thanks for the video. Used these techniques just today, in fact.
Thanks for the blending of visuals on the board and going slowly in your cuts…helpful…
All tips on all turning tools are much appreciated.

Great Tips and thank you for your patience, helping us slow learners to grasp the concept.
Thanks, Shawn. I am trying to improve my woodturning skills. These videos really help
Nice video Shawn!

Another excellent teaching video. Really appreciate these

Great instruction Shawn.
,a cool video keep up the great content.. Thank you…..
Another awesome and super informative video. Thanks for your time and expertise. Also, did you hold in a sneeze at 6:48?
Good tips. Thanks for sharing
Great job 👌
I would like to see more on the use of the skew. Thanks. Jim
Love it, thanks for all the tips.
Beautiful Woodlathe, I wanted to buy one, but they would not convert the Canadian price into US dollars. So I bought a Vicmarc lathe, I love ?
Great video. Do you use any of the replaceable carbide tips?
Those are scrapers. I’ll use them for some scraping. Usually deep hollowing. See 4-cuts video.
How to make a good round bead. I struggle with this and which tool is best suited for the job. I prefer the skew, but technique is key.
Thanks
Shawn, wonderful video on spindle gouge use. Looks like your tool rest is above center, as usually used for skew work. Is that just camera angle or intentional? I like your deliberate teaching style and explanations.
You use the skew with a higher tool rest.

700th thumb up, what do I win? :-)
Sorry, prize was given out at 666th.
@@wortheffort Oh no, I guess I'll have to go get myself in the mood for the lathe :-)
Thanks
