I love It! I used to listen to 69 love songs on a loop two summers ago in the car, and many times after making a coffee I would bring the girl I liked to her house. her music always takes me to that place of possibilities, melancholy and the vibrant heat of summer. Today we are engaged and the first song we put on after the request was "the book of LOVE" Thanks for sharing your music Stephin! Lots of love ❤️
It's so nice to see Stephin looking happy and well, especially doing live stuff. This is probably one of the best live one on one things I've seen of him and the music itself is really good too (the choice to move into the bathroom to record was definitely a good one).
What a great interview. He is notoriously "difficult" to interview, as we see in so many transcripts, but Dj El Toro clearly has the chops to keep his interest and even a few unguarded laughs i dare say. If he ever decided to move away from the virtual records, this Dj could be an effective counselor for anyone on suicide watch.
ahh so happy you did this! TMF is one of my favourite band. love their old stuff; love their new stuff. cant get enough of merritt's voice. why wasn't the rest of them band there? stephin merritt isn't the magnetic fields. he IS integral, but.. everyone else is important too. their two most recent tours were fantastic. they tour RARELY (esp since stephin doesn't like touring), so if you get a chance, GO see them!
😂WFT? I can imagine that the beginnings of KEXP channel were hard. But I didn't expect they recorded in a rest room!? Unless this is a guest's request it is quite odd... and funny.👏
If you only knew Stephen as he was when younger, or Today too still deep in.... His best self comes out and excels at informal settings, and being stuck in a Loo must have channeled in him his goofiest days I miss when we were kiddos barely shaving. We are both same year as Robert Downey jr. so we can be prickish but have a funny bone within too. His a deep down acute artist so his perception is highly developed, thus his genius. It ain't easy being Stephen, even when he is at ease. This was very delightful to see, not just performance wise but he enjoying like in the old days of lighter carefree selves
Where are the prog rock/punk/metal covers for this band? Can someone in this comment section enlighten me? I have found Ludvig Moon's cover of strange powers satisfactory while I wait.
I've done a lot of recordings on one toilet or another, but I never had anybody in there with me. I guess it's not that weird as long as you're not doing any business. It is kind of weird that he left the lid up.
I thought it was cheating to have to read the words. Now I feel like a superstar, because I can do it too. And how much funnier would this have been if his pants were down around his ankles? Just me?
I like this Seattle band called The Waifs of the Wharf. They have this song about Stephin Merritt that's great: ua-cam.com/video/ebnaWhKzt_o/v-deo.html
The host is just awful. Love TMF but this is what you get when "artists" care wayy too much about being an "artists" rather than just playing their awesome music
magnetic fields is forever for me. if i live to be a million i'll still be playing his albums
ten years later- how ya feeling : )
@@snekboiboopyes
Best songwriter alive today
He and Bibio, yes
...quite possibly, yes!
I love It!

And the best manual fade out of all time award goes tooooooo.............
Heck yes I can't believe someone finally covered "Flush Piece" in such an eloquent way! It may have been even better than the original!
Holy shit did I just see Stephin smile at the beginning?
i love how stephen merrit's actual talking voice is similar to his singing baritone (which he excels in)!
I would say he's a bass singer
i'd say he's a bass too, since i'm a baritone and while i have the same range, i sound like a squirrel compared to him

OMG the fade-out by leaving the room at the end of YGF!
That bumper at 5:53 is perfect... "Your Girlfriend's Face by the Magnetic Fields live from the men's room at KEXP."

Public restrooms in old buildings have an excellent sound. Especially for whistling.
just learned of magnetic fields this morning and am loving it!
how's that working out? still hooked i hope!
jeopardy?
his voice is a gift, his precious mind too
ahh so happy you did this! I want to marry his voice
this is gold I've loved this performance for like 8 years !!!
So indie he's playing in a bathroom.
The bathroom, AKA, the indie musician’s best friend.
The best acoustics in there.
Why is the toilet seat up?
ultimaetsolder for the brown notes at 4:55
+ultimaetsolder I'm so happy I wasn't the only one thinking this..
+ultimaetsolder It looks like he's sitting on some kind of cushion
Yeah, pretty much ^|^what he said^|^.
it's a matter of acoustic response B-)
Brilliantly refreshing. A true original.
😂WFT?

This is my impression of Stephin in an interview:
-_- "Is it almost over?"
Gawd, I love him.
This is the first live video I've seen of them/him and I love this so much!
having forgotten how to cry, I die
only kexp can do make this possible and listen that good
Can you imagine him singing all these songs just to you?
The new record, 50 Song Memoir, like 69 Love Songs is brilliant.
I F'ckin love this guy
The interview has the charm of what I imagine NPR interviewing Salad Fingers might be.
If you only knew Stephen as he was when younger, or Today too still deep in....

I liked this before hearing it.. hopefully they deliver... :-)
is the yoko ono cover available on flac?
Camera sensor quality has really improved since 2012
I find it amusing that he completely hates everything about touring. It shows in all of his interviews.
You know you wrote 69 songs for 1 album, when you do KEXP in the WC
Amazing!!!
No one's going to mention that he has both seats up and is sitting on bare porcelain?
Where are the prog rock/punk/metal covers for this band? Can someone in this comment section enlighten me? I have found Ludvig Moon's cover of strange powers satisfactory while I wait.
im laughing so hard he really just got up and walked off while singing for the fadeout 😂😂😂
9:36 - "Now I know why people warn you about interviewing Stephin Merritt..." XD
cool I thought I was the only one doing that! Acoustics is great, especialy if the bathroom is small, plus the toilet has the perfect height
Nevermind, this is just by far one of the strangest videos I've ever seen. Ever.
Obsessed with Girlfriends face atm
where can i find this tab for i die? Please :)
Both seats up
So Low. Love.
Dam nice finger plucking on the double string uke
I've done a lot of recordings on one toilet or another, but I never had anybody in there with me. I guess it's not that weird as long as you're not doing any business. It is kind of weird that he left the lid up.
It looks like the seat and the lid are up.
Zack from WKUK was right, this sounds like Trevor singing.
My song to Merritt it would called: The day I actually heard Merritt's voice
Holy shit?
Literally.
Dude you've got your pants up.
That was by far one of the strangest first 45 seconds of my life..
Anybody know what ukulele that is?
3:00 Kermit the Frog?!
I thought it was cheating to have to read the words. Now I feel like a superstar, because I can do it too. And how much funnier would this have been if his pants were down around his ankles? Just me?
I'm pretty sure he always has a scarf on, even on the toilet, even in the shower.
I think he is hot. Beautiful voice. Love them
Great music but the interview part is actually hilarious
I like this Seattle band called The Waifs of the Wharf. They have this song about Stephin Merritt that's great: ua-cam.com/video/ebnaWhKzt_o/v-deo.html
Everyone knows bathrooms have the best acoustics
Interesting human.
why the toilet
Good acoustics
The music is great, but it would be so much better if he was pooping while performing...
Im so uncomfortable lol what is happening.
Bass-baritone, more of a baritone than bass though.
aerosols
Lol
Jajajajajja
Why do I feel these 2 are trying to out-gay each other?
WHAT is that guy DOING?? It looks like he's having an anxiety attack!
Gross
total sellout
The host is just awful. Love TMF but this is what you get when "artists" care wayy too much about being an "artists" rather than just playing their awesome music
this would be kinda cool if his music wasn't that of an infant
I die. I wonder why they call him the most depressed writer in music? :D
AWESOME!
