    It's fall of 2022 and my work is still quite effective in keeping weeds from growing in the cracks of my driveway and sidewalks. I have a corner property, so there is a lot of sidewalk here. The weeds were growing in almost every crack of my 70 year old sidewalks. I thought I might be kind of crazy (who knows what the neighbors were thinking?) for doing all the work. The roofing cement is getting a little brittle and now has some cracks in it, the black top filler has cracks in it, and the Silka product is holding up the best. It has not cracked yet, though it is pulling away from the concrete leaving an open seam for dirt & seeds to accumulate. I still have just a few weeds popping up out of the unsealed areas. It just requires a couple of moments to pluck a weed out a few times a week.
    I have a fun video on how to get a skunk to leave from under a shed. It's a true story and my attempt at comedy. I'm not sure if the skunk did move to the neighbor's shed though he is legendary for being mean. The neighborhood wouldn't feel too sorry for him. Here's the link:

    I use old latex paint which I always seems to have lot's. Mix some paint with dirt or sand so it's thicker, put into a plastic bag with a corner cut so it acts like a pastry bag and squeeze into cracks. Some sand or dirt on top. It really flows down deep into cracks, stays flexible. Stopped bermuda grass for going on 6 years, looks like the day I installed it even in our Phoenix sun and temps. Free solution that works. Have to be careful to not get paint everywhere when applying so have a toothbrush and water ready.

    June 5th - update. We are into weed season. There were a a few tiny cracks/holes in both the roof cement and the concrete filler where some tiny weeds pushed through. It's amazing how they can come up from the smallest crack. I could pull them out easily with my fingers. I have a lot of side walk and have only had to pull out just a few little weeds.
    It was a lot of work to clean out the cracks and fill them, but I have spent only moments pulling out a few small weeds. Time will tell how long the sealants will keep the cracks closed and almost weed free.

    • @Know-How-Now
      @Know-How-Now  5 років тому +1

      To clarify, I think you are asking that if you use salt on the sidewalk (think snow and ice in the winter) will it damage the sealant. I'm not a chemist or material engineer. I'd guess that the roof cement should be OK. It's similar to the hot tar used to seal up cracks in our roads. In the winter salt is regularly used on the roads here. The Sika, I can't say. You could call them and ask that question. They could give you the best answer.

    Summer is winding down & it's been close to 2 months since I've filled in the cracks. I have had only one small weed push through a crack, I would guess I missed a root or a seed during the cleaning process.
    I have about 60 feet x 100 feet of sidewalk contraction joints that I filled. About 90 percent of the sidewalk contraction joints were filled with the roof cement or roof cement/sand. There are 3 wide driveway expansion joints. Two were filled with driveway cracksealer/shingles/sand & the other two with roof cement/shingles/sand. The places I used the off white concrete filler are holding up good (I did notice a neighbor had used this & it's peeling out of the cracks). The color is eye grabbing. It took about 3-4 weeks for the roof cement to set up. The sand on top of it stopped any from being tracked around. The roof cement/sand color blend in much better than the off white filler. On some very large joints, some small gaps have opened up as the roof cement cured. They may have had sand in them that has been carried away by the ants. I know it's the ants because they carry off all of the sand in the joints between a brick pad that I have in front of my shed. I'm providing the ant community with building material! lol. So far, I am pleased with the roof cement/sand.

    Pressure wash cracks using a rotating tip, then add expanding sand to cracks, sweep to level, then hose off with light mist. This method is easy and will last 2 to 3 years. Secret is to maintain an even level so that organic matter doesn’t begin to fill in and allow for seeds to germinate. Use a garden blower concentrating on the cracks and seams at least once a week during spring, summer and fall. Used this method for years with great success.

    OK here’s an easier way to combat it, first weed whack it so that you take off the tops and expose the vascular system of the weeds. Second, mixup one to one to one ratio of high strength vinegar to borax to boiling water. Stir the borax in the boiling water vinegar solution until the borax dissolves, poured directly over the exposed weeds. Should take a couple of days and you really only need to apply this once a year

    Great video! I'm lazy so I use my pump sprayer set to stream. I use a "Vegetation Killer" instead of a weed killer. This stuff isn't applied on weeds to kill them, this stuff is applied to the ground and nothing will grow there for a year. I think it temporarily "poisons" the soil. So even if seeds get blown into the cracks and joints, they won't grow. It's a good idea to first clean out the expansion joints and cracks like you did then just apply the vegetation killer once a year. Now that's for us lazy people.

    • @eldorado111
      @eldorado111 3 роки тому +2

      Mr Purpleman: I think it would be ok, only difficult to control... if you can contain that side of things, then expanding foam does dry very hard and lasts. The absolute best solution in my opinion is *polyeurethane* gap filler. If you've ever seen under the hood of your car, body panels that appear sandwiched together with a bead or a smear of 'goo' resembling silicon - that is polyeurethane - it's like silicon but way more durable and extremely hard to remove when applied to a clean surface. The only drawback here is the cost, you need some good packing (maybe the foam?) ..so that you don't pour tubes of it down into the gap. You will see this filler used in some commercial grade concrete applications, eg. Shopping Centre carparks.

    Try Sika expansion joint sealer to put in the joints after you clean out the cracks. It is self leveling. It is found in concrete and mortar section at Home Depot. This stuff is great. Better than this idea but to each their own. It has been in my concrete driveway for a couple of years now with no weeds or anything to dig out. It does say to replace it periodically but I forgot the time frame on that. It is on the tube and you can find out about it on youtube or the web. I also added small brown washed pebbles to mine since I have a brownstone concrete driveway. I also put concrete sealer on my driveway. Pressure wash the driveway first. I would also suggest you inspect your driveway for hairline cracks and chip them out into a V groove. You can use Sika in those too. Better than the brown crack filler in a bottle at Home Depot. It doesn't last very long. I have some raised spots where I had to use a product like that to fill the cracks. That is still a work in progress and I need to add Sika there as well. Comes in grey and beige and over time will get dirty to match dirty driveway. That is my two cents. Hope this helps.

I looked at the Sika, but I have about 180 linear feet of control joints that had cracked open and filled with dirt and weed seeds. I did fill a few with the Sika, but that costs around $13 a tube and the roof cement is around $2.70 a tube. The Sika would have been quite expensive for me. As you say, it does do a nice job. I don't remember how many tubes of roof cement I used, but it was at least a dozen of them. I agree the brown crack filler doesn't hold up. Thanks again for taking the time to contribute, it's contributions like yours that make the video better.

      I considered that, but those are expansion joints in the driveway that allow for temperature change. Do you think polymeric sand will expand and contract or maybe break apart after a few winter/summer cycles? The joint are there for a reason. Old concrete is really hard. I not trying to argue the point, just curious, I am not a material engineer.

      @Know-How-Now  5 років тому +2

      Thanks for the suggestion, Kurt. I have about 180 linear feet of cracks, too much for the hot water trick. The cracks were mostly control joints that had broken (65 year old side walks) open. Over time, dirt and weed seeds collected below. It was a constant battle with the weeds. I wonder, if pouring boiling water in the cracks would have killed the weed seeds. That would have been easier than cleaning the cracks out with water pressure prior to filling them. Again, thanks for the helpful contribution.

    Just fill the gap with expanding builders foam, use it from the gun, but only leave a small hole in the nozzle when you cut it, the foam lasts for literally decades, as it expands and contracts with the weather. It is the same stuff that is used around replacement window frames. But do be aware it expands a lot, so you need to experiment on how much to apply. Any "overfill" can be cut off with an old kitchen knife when fully dry. It sticks to almost anything and will not wash from clothes so wear old clothes and disposable gloves. One tube will go a long way and they are available from any builders merchants or hardware stores.

    Thanks for all the good ideas plus those in the comments. I'll steer clear of the often suggested salt, that can damage the concrete and at $450 a sidewalk square I don't want that. I worry that any kind of filler will be much harder to fix second time around because it can't be easily cleaned out for a fresh start. I did fill a cracked sidewalk with silka but that was an alternative to $450 replacement. Regular string trimming sounds promising. For now I'll stick to roundup as it's the safe choice and probably what they already use in the roads.

      For string trimming the cracks keep the string long as possible to make it easy and turn your trimmer sideways with the string parallel with the crack. If you do it one good time at the start of the season you should only have to go over a few random sprigs here and there whenever you mow.

    • @Know-How-Now
      @Know-How-Now  3 роки тому

      It's been about a year since my experiment. The roofing cement has held up fairly well. I live in the northeast part of the US. Over the winter some of the roof cement did develop some small cracks. I did get a few weeds in those cracks. I'd guess about 5% of the cracks got some weeds. It was way better than before. If I was a little more diligent, on a hot summer day, I should have pushed the roof cement and closed the gaps/added some more roof cement. The crack sealer held up best, but would have been very expensive for my large area. The crack sealer fails over time, I saw a neighbor used it and after a few years it was peeling out of the cracks. The grey crack sealer is unsightly. The roof cement with some sand sprinkled on top is barely noticeable.
