Sister Rosetta Tharpe - Trouble in mind

  • Trouble in mind, I'm blue
    But I won't be blue always,
    'Cause that sun is gonna shine in my back door someday
    Now all you men's the same
    But now I'm old enough to change my name
    Lord, that sun's gonna shine in my back door someday
    I'm gonna lay my head
    On that lonesome railroad line
    And let the 2:19 ease my troubled mind
    Trouble in mind, I'm blue,
    But I won't be blue always
    Child, that wind's gonna come and blow my blues away!

    Playing electric blues guitar by the railroad track while singing her guts out, what can I say, who else did better, man or woman back then? What a voice, what a talent!

      Agree musicians today can’t hold a candle to Rosetta. Today’s stars are pampered and travel in luxury. She pioneered when blacks were no even allowed to drink out of same water fountain as whites. She did not make the money stars do today. She was and still is a star. .

      That’s because they had to rely on their talent as musicians and singers. They didn’t have to have a white smile, good hair and flashing lights to cover up the fact they ain’t got no talent, like todays “singers”...

    How come we have been peddled Great British Bands and Artists since 1960's and this GENIUS performed under the radar of stardom.?

    • @BSIII
      @BSIII 5 років тому +14

      First of all, do you not realize this performance is *in* england. Second off all, if the british wave never happened, the greats like sister rosetta wouldve been forgotten to a great degree. Blues in america was becoming obsolete and forgotten until the brits started obsessing over it, learning to play it, and exposed it the world in a way that may have never happened otherwise. Brits appreciated black american musicians, and gave them credit, flying them to england to perform for waves of young audiences who appreciated and obsessed over their american blues, hence why Sister Rosetta is seen here performing in england. People need to understand that brits were important in renewing dying american blues music. Why else would howlin wolf and others had huge followings in europe.

    • @BSIII
      @BSIII 5 років тому +5

      I kinda see what you're saying, though. But america had a darker climate for black artists, especially for blues and raw stuff like this, so it the british wave had to be the catalyst for exposure to mainstream.

      Ugly confederate influence would not allow us to witness and like creativity and art of people that they called animals. (!) Britain had no ugly south, so they got to hear it. And monkey see monkey do , the brits stole it, claimed they wrote it, and sold it right back to our ignorant country, all dressed up as whi.... uh, european. Then we were allowed to hear it.

    When you have music like this in your life as a performer, you are living in Heaven. This is the kind of artist I want to be, but a different category of art. Still, I want to be the same totally swinging chick on the planet where my work is concerned. She had that joyous thing. That's what I strive for. She's an inspiration.

    How did they manage to capture the sound so well? The small guitar amplifier is under the wooden bench, behind her, apparently without a microphone. She is singing with a microphone in her outfit, just below her mouth. The wire goes into the pocket of your dress, but where is it connected? All instruments are audible and do not appear to be playing back. Mystery.

      Microphone was clipped to a collar of her coat. And you can notice that there is a cable sticked in a left pocked of a coat. It's visible expecially in othes shots of that show. Probably it was wireless system, even in those old days. I can't notice other cable on the floor other than guitar one.
      But yeah, great voice and great singing.

      It was the first time a radio mic had been used in England I seem to remember reading years ago. I remember watching this programme as an awestruck 14 year old. We all had a great interest in blues thanks to the likes of the Stones, who always credited their influences, the Animals, Yardbirds and others. Chris Barber was anther who paid for blues greats like Howling Wolf, Muddy Waters and others to come over where a lot of them earnt more money than they had seen before and were amazed to see venues full of white people appreciating them. They also loved the respect they got at a time when there was segregation in the USA and they were treated like second class citizens.
