I’d love to see Patagonia’s Wild Idea Bison boots cut in half. They’re $400, and I suspect they’re overpriced, but Patagonia stuff is generally built well and lasts.
I really hope that these manufacturers see your videos and up their game! It would be nice to see more quality products on the shelf, like Ariat did with the shank etc after that video you did. I believe all companies should put their money where their mouth is!
I got the Sperry's last year and they was fashionable, comfortable and cool BUT.....this year I'm getting the LL Bean for sure. He literally split this boot open like he was filaying fish. Thanks Rose Anvil for your thorough breakdown.
These are perfectly fine if you expect them to function as rain boots (per their marketing). Most won't have any issues getting them in the $50-60 dollar range. The leather version has pull up leather that is holding up well after several years.
My Sperry winter boots which I bought between 7-10 years ago with it’s rubber sole/lower section and leather upper section (less of a ‘duck boot’ shape and closer to the shape of a Sorel winter boot) are fantastic quality. They keep my feet warm and dry - the only drawback being that I cannot wear socks that are too thick. But otherwise, I am fully satisfied with them.
The huckberry duck boot that is supposed to wear like sneakers would be an awesome last minute wild card boot (like the Thursday sneakers from your previous series!)
My sister had these about 8-9 years ago when she went to college. They are crap. My sister threw them out a long time ago. In contrast I bought my bean boots 6 years ago and wore them last week. Crazy they are about the same price.
Had the Leather version. After one rainy day and a hike in the snow I threw them away. They were letting in water like crazy. Now I use the bean boot. Way better.
I had those for a year and it bruised my Achilles because of the way the heel awkwardly shaped around the back of my foot. I forced myself to wear them for at least one winter though because I spent so much on them 😩
I bought mine on clearance and I love them. I have arthritis my feet and have to wear what doesn’t hurt, regardless of quality. Some of the high quality ones leave me in tears.
I got some for like $40 that were rated to -20 Fahrenheit. The soles were so thin my feet got cold right way when it was just below freezing, so the temp rating was close to 50 degrees off. I assume they are a fashion boot? they were water proof but I have better boots just for that...
I got the leather version around 5 years ago when these were becoming "trendy". I just needed waterproof boots for college since it rains 24/7 and my mom suggested duck style boots. Because of the trend factor LL Bean was on back order for another year or two and Sperry is a generally good brand. They turned out to be the biggest piece of crap. Holes wore through the sole after two months of regular wear and the heel lost its support. In the video you can see it's just hollow inside, once that layer of rubber wears out you just have nothing. I got a pair from Rue21 that spring for $10 and they're still lasting. Almost as nice as Bean, but no padding in the sole and fake leather.
Some day do the Sperry tall Ice Bay boot. I got those and think they’re solid but would like to see them compared. I bought them after reading that they had come out as the best boot for preventing slipping on ice by a study done by some lab in Toronto that looked at over 100 brands.
I think the cut-centered score has been the best innovation on these videos since you started, with the non-manufacturer sponsors being a close second :)
I miss when you do "dissecting" video of classic and new sneakers. Can you do classic like Puma suede, Adidas All Star, New balance 380, Nike Airmax, Vans, Adidas Stan Smith, and Adidas Gazelle
I'm on my 2nd pair of Sperry's mens duck boots with the leather top. To their credit, Sperry sent me a free pair, due to a squeak in the inner sole, after having had mine for a full year. One week after receiving my new boots, same squeak in the same exact spot. I believe that the squeak is in this material they stack in the soles. Thanks for this video. At least it helps me track down the root cause. I LOVE the boots but hate the squeak.
Nick's... 16 weeks isn't bad. I received mine about two weeks ago after waiting 25 weeks! I picked a bad time to order... between covid related shutdowns and material shortages time marched on. Despite that, my made to order Builder Pro boots fit great, look great, and as discussed on this channel are great! After receiving them and wearing them the wait time seems like a trivial inconvenienced!
Of all the Sperry duck boots you could have chosen for a comparison, you took the cheapest, flimsiest one to compare to a boot with a leather upper, thicker sole and actual insulation. A fairer comparison would have been using a Sperry duck boot with similar characteristics to the LL Bean boot from their Cold Bay or Ice Bay line, with thick lugs on the sole with ceramic shards for improved ice traction mixed in. The ice-bays even come lined with real shearling and are supper warm and sturdy.
I just picked these up with the leather upper for $30, and I have over 30 pairs of shoes, 10+ of them are some form of boot, so these will never get any type of hard wear from me but will be good for a rain boot in rotation for sure.
I just bought two new pair of Converse today. A pair of Chuck Taylor's for kicking around town, and a pair of little low-top things with the rubber toe caps for when my company sends me shingling. Work boots are great, but not on a sloped roof. For that, flat bottomed sneakers work the best in my experience.
Granted, it was 30 some years ago, but my Sperry Duck boots wore great. I wore them to work at a fruit cannery and unless water sloshed up where the leather and the rubber were stitched, they kept my feet dry. I was a teenager so I could get away with marginally constructed shoes, but the Sperry ducks were pretty comfortable. Aside from some ground in grime and water wear on the leather, they looked like new the whole time I owned them. I passed them on to my mother when I was done at the cannery, I’ll have to check next time I’m there.
So like..... if I needed them for shoveling the snow & grocery shopping they would be okay? I found them for about $70ish. I would buy the L.L. Bean ones but I just need them for small things. I just don't want to ruin my Timberlands 😅
was searching for a Topsider review and surprised to see this is your only Sperry. Would love to see a boat shoe comparison, or maybe lump a few casual moc-toe type shoes all together.
I just ordered a pair today cause I got them and my wife a pair of low top canvas flats for $58 total. So at that price they will be great. Hope they dont fall apart but we will see when they get here
Has anyone else bought Whites’ Perry Boot during the Black Friday sale? If so have you experienced any concerns of the boot’s quality? I’ve had mine for under two weeks and I’m starting to notice little flaws.
Can't wait for the Sorel video! Love my Sorels! They've worn like iron. Many years old, worn in snow while walking dogs and they look like new. Not surprised on the Sperry's. I buy little Sperry topsider slip on sneakers. They're cute, but borderline comfy and I throw them out at the end of a season or two, after maybe wearing them a handful of times. I say Meh on that as well.
Wish I'd seen this video when it first came out. I had to find out the hard way that the heels on these boots will wear through and start admitting water after only a couple of months of wear.
It might be stepping somwhat out of your realm of leather goods but I would be really interested to see a comparison of muck boots/ rubber work boots comparing brands such as xtratuf, Muckboot, Hunters, Honeywell etc. Especially their insulated boots. It's such a mystery to me how they manufacture them and what makes a good boot from a bad.
I bought these a few years ago and the seam between the rubber and the top broke within 2 months of light wearing. I'd recommend a Bean Boot for sure if you're considering buying a duck boot.
After owning these and having them last my first two months of college before the soles wore through, I broke down and bought a cheap pair from Rue21 just to get by. They have lasted 5 years now and the only noticeable wear is the heel. They almost feel as nice as Bean boots except these are fake leather. The sad thing is, my sister has already bought a pair of the Sperry boots before hearing what happened to mine. She gave them the benefit of the doubt, but the same thing happened. The rubber even ended up peeling off the sides in big flaps and left a fabric layer behind which she wore anyway because she didn't have other shoes besides shower shoes.
They are so uncomfy and unsupportive I needed winter water resistant boots and regret these so much I do appreciate that I can slip them on though, good to bring out the trash in the snowy winters here but that’s about it
Next series idea! BBBB- Big Box Budget Boot. Get the cheapest and most expensive boot from Big Box stores like Walmart, Target, Costco, Dicks, Sears, Etc. Compare them and see if any are worth getting.
I had my Sperry boots for 6 years. They are great boots for New England weather. They survived 6 Fall and Winter seasons . I'm buying another pair. I have narrow feet . Buy a good sock and some maple syrup to keep warm. I paid 95 dollars they last forever.
The Friedrich website prices look more like I'm paying retail value directly to the manufacture. I wouldn't expect to pay more than $300 retail for a leather briefcase. For $550, I would expect them to be besoke.
I know its pricey, but I would love to see a Nick's, White's, and Wesco comparison series. Maybe they're less work heavy boots, like the Nick's Robert or the White's MP.
Omg. I was just looking into these boots! Not too sure what I'm going to do yet cause I found them for about $70ish.... I would buy the L.L. Bean ones but I don't feel like spending 100+ because I only want them for shoveling the snow and going grocery shoppping. This "review" was super helpful though!!!!!! 💛
bought sperry boat shoes for years - always a good bang for the buck. last couple pairs, however, fell apart right away. i wonder if they've changed their material or manufacturing process?
Do you think this is the same situation for Sperry's cold bay boot? I got that one because I liked the look more, but it's a $180 boot instead of a $120 boot. Wondering if the quality is actually better on that pair. It's held up pretty well for me.
I’ve worn the Avenue, Wetlands, and Gold Cup duck boots from Sperry. The Avenue feels a lot more like the Saltwater to me. The fit is a bit roomier with lack of insulation by the foot. The Wetlands (which was discontinued for Cold Bay,) has been my go to boot for many years. The Gold Cup (which I think was discontinued as well,) is very good, aside from the fact the piping came off for no real reason. I trust the latter two boots over Nike ACG (which I actually slipped on a wet surface with,) and when Polo Ralph Lauren had duck boots for men, which were not listed as waterproof.
I went to buy the key organizer and it doesn't have the customization that you described in the video. The customization available on the website is far worse than what you describe. it only allows you to put the initials on the leather and doesn't allow you to change the screw or inscribe the initials on the screw.
I have a pair of Hunter boot imitation Sperrys. I mainly got them because I liked the look a bit better than actual Hunters, but I get the impression they're not amazing quality either :(
The duck boot series won't be complete unless you review Schnee's. Heritage quality made in Bozeman MT. Slightly more expensive than LL Bean but the quality more than makes up for it.
@@ThisisRubbishlo thats exactly why I buy them. I used to be really in to shoes and spent a lot but as I've gotten older I've gotten cheap lol. I have good work boots for when I'm doing real work so my cheap shoes last a long time since I only wear them to walk around
hey you should definitely consider cutting some groundcover boots. they’re a new vegan boot brand but their boots seem like they could be useful for work and it would be interesting to see how the material holds up compared to trad leather!!
#RoseAnvil since this month, you’re focusing on mock boots, why not cut a traditional Sorel mock boot (the original version)? Those boots run between $100-160 and would be nice to know if they are worth it.
My partner has a pair of these she bought for $5, which seems to be about the right price. She has the ones with a leather upper, which she describes as "complete trash".
My wife has a pair of these. The liner in hers is nicer than the liner in these. She likes them but they are only worn for fashion on rainy days, although they do keep her feet dry. They shank has a lot of flex and doesn't offer much support. A better shank would make a huge difference in the quality of wear of these boots. Hers were also made in Indonesia.
Huh, I wonder if the women’s boots are built differently. The pair I have have worn well for 4 years as my main snow boot. My feet get hot even when we get down to negative Fahrenheit numbers.
Sperry has several duck boot variations, some insulated, some not, some leather, some not. You happened to pick the farthest possible one comparable to an LL Bean boot. I don’t get your rationale for doing that. If it was a standalone review, sure. But in a comparison series with the Bean Boot as the bench mark, it makes no sense. Either get the Decoy boot or the Cold Bay boot (or even just the leather variation of the Saltwater boot) and add them to the series - those are a direct 1:1 comparable boot to LL Bean’s original Hunting Boot and their lined winter Bean Boot. But attempting to pawn this off as a fair comparison is disappointing to see.
You had me worried that you would cut your hand when you held that boot in your hand with it split down the middle and you ran the knife over the seam.
I have a pair of leather top Sperry. They are ok. I have had them for about 5 years and they are still going strong, but they are so sloppy on my feet that if I take a walk in them I get blisters on my heels where the leather meets the rubber. They are not a warm boot, but a decent rain boot. I paid about 60 for them and given how long they have lasted I’m OK with that but the blister situation means I will not buy them again.
Would you ever consider doing a video about Duckfeet boots/shoes? They're a Danish-made brand that seem to be very high quality (full grain leather, crepe rubber sole, goodyear welt, handmade in Europe), and they have a distinctive wide toe box shape, hence their name. There aren't a lot of non-sponsored reviews about them to be found online, and they're pricy, so I'm nervous to buy. I'd love to see you cut them in half and give your informed opinion about them.
I remember when I didn't know much about shoes or quality at all, picked up a pair of loafers from Sperry for work, and they fell apart in like 4 months. Definitely don't have a great impression of the brand from that experience, this video reaffirms that...

I wonder the build quality of the tommy Hilfiger duck boots
You should do a video over pikolinos. I work at a shoe store that sells them and I'm curious of the actual quality of them
It would be nice to see some "inside" mid-luxury Italian sneakers. For example, Cinzia Araia.
Huh, I wonder if the women’s boots are built differently. The pair I have have worn well for 4 years as my main snow boot. My feet get hot even when we get down to negative Fahrenheit numbers.
Just saw these at Marshall’s for 39$...they were tan. Looked at them, they seem cheap and flimsy.
Clearly there is favoritism for LL Bean, but a entertaining video :)
Or maybe he did it because they're the exact same price. That would be the rationale.
You had me worried that you would cut your hand when you held that boot in your hand with it split down the middle and you ran the knife over the seam.
can you do a classic hiking boot series?
like wa shoe Wolverine 1000 mile pro pvp 1gb ram or other brandys :)
Can you get your hands on a pair of danner mountain lights?
@Rose Anvil Have you heard of a brand called Pajar. They make winter boots it would be great if you review some of their boots.
You should do Carolinas moc toe boots, I have a pair and there great work boots
Please do a puma suede classic
I bought a pair for thirty bucks and they've lasted me a year so far, I feel like they're really good for the money
Pumas are very well made, I took apart my old old ones, bought another- the Clydes- Walt Frazier from the 70’s...

I got them, but I’m not satisfied with the quality of the boot. Some small tweaks and I’d love them.
