I had a friend in the 90’s who had a pair of Moon boots.. they were skiing fashion, and through winter he wore them at Uni, they were really cool and good fun. We were artists, so it was ok. But I think people should play if they want. It’s not chaos so much as it is debugging the stasis of ordinary. Girls would rock in these pretty well. The guys, yeah they can do it:)
Thank you for exposing the substance to go with the form of this shoe. I love how it looks dumb but a lot of real thought went into it. It just goes to show that something so simple can be industrially designed so well.
In the 80's there was a similar fashion item called "Moon boots", they were build for walking on snow, thick foam insulation for protection against the cold and a big footprint to keep you from sinking too deep in soft snow, I think these boots will do the same during the winter in ski sports ressorts.
That you do this (quality breakdown) is, in itself, interesting. That you do it SO WELL, taking such an interest in all aspects of the process and bring History and, well, everything else you bring to the table... I just LOVE watching these videos and I enjoy every aspect (bar knowing that a perfectly good pair of shoes/boots has just been murdered! But I realize YOU HAVE TO DO THIS, and that it pains you just as much, or MORE, than it pains me to see). Love, love, love your channel. Thank you for your commitment to excellence.
Saw the ysl boots repaired on another channel, what utter shit it was, more or less a scam sadly. But I concur, I’d love to see that as well. My dream would be Carol Christian poell boots!
@@dennisnordlund902 CCP is probably the most out of budget shoe that has been asked on this channel hahaha. But yeah I'd also love for some CCP, Guidis, Rick Owens, or other more "artisanal" shoe brands out there
Probably the best take on the Big Red Boots I've seen so far. I was one to dismiss this... but you have to give them credit for the design to make it work. The burning tests also made me aware of something I've never thought of in terms of designs of things like these as well. Great job on the video. Very objective.
Ironically, ghese boots would likely make excellent snake boots because if you got struck at by most snakes, there's no way that it's fangs would be able to reach your skin through all of the foam shapes.
Tbh, I was looking at these boots thinking “I’ve seen these before in a cartoon” but for the life of me couldn’t remember which one!Thank you for reminding me of a show I used to watch when I was little!
I get the Astro Boy immediately. They also make me think Mikey Mouse feeling fancy in red. I was surprised by how detailed it was inside. I also expected it to be just foam.
The first time that I saw these, someone had bolted a pair of rollerskate plates to them and took them for a trip around the skate park. I thought that they would be really floppy but seeing how difficult it was to get them off, my mind has been changed.
This is absolutely the most interesting video in a good while, simply because you look at it and WONDER what's inside it. We all have a pretty good idea of what most boots or sneakers have on the inside, but this is just so out there and so cool because of that.
I think it would be interesting to have you do a blind review. Where your staff picks out a boot or shoe in your size and you have no idea what it is they don’t even give you the box just the shoes and from there do you have to provide feedback as to wearability, comfort, design And construction. As well as guess the price
Awesome analysis. I appreciate how well you cover the technical aspects as well as give the boot's artistic side its props. I was STUNNED by the cross section. So much more thought went into the design than what I had expected. Thanks for a great look at the weird truth of Big Red Boots.
i am with you 100%, weston. i thought you were gonna melt these boots to the ground but they ended up taking us all by surprise. wish i could spare the money, i'd totally rock a pair. thanks for the fair & entertaining review.
I bet they'd be great in snow. If you had to walk through 10 inches to a foot of snow to get to the store or wherever, these would probably be wonderful. With the hollow voids they'd be pretty well insulated. The large footprint would be grippy and lessen the amount you'd sink into the snow.(Like a snowshoe) They appear to be waterproof. SO yeah if you had to walk in deep snow, with these boots, it appears that your feet would stay warm & dry. Are there more practical solutions to walking in snow? For sure. are these boots fun and silly and lighthearted? Again, for sure. Another commenter said these would be great for cosplay. They'd be a good starting point for building up a beastly pair of feet or the feet of a mech by adding more foam, fur, claws, spikes ..whatever, and then painting them or covering them in an appropriate material to achieve the look for the costume.
Question: I see that you want boots to cause a bounce in the bar drop, but I have Footprint Kingfoam insoles which sell based on deadening an impact, especially for skateboarding. I'm thinking maybe it's two different things maybe going on and that maybe these don't contradict. I have spinal issues so i wear them to absorb impact, not to return energy. am i doing the right thing?
Have you ever put a pair of Keen boots through your tests? It’s too late for me to see it before I buy them but I own two pairs of them, two pairs of their sandals and one pair of their shoes. I didn’t purposely set out to get Keens. It just happened that way. Those were the ones I liked. Now I’m curious to see what you think of them. Are they good quality? Mine seem to be and they are comfortable (after kind of a tough break in period on one pair).
I have seen these boots for so long, heard a lot of things, and now that the trend has died down, I know that I still really love these boots. I’m a fashion designer and love artsy looks and was wondering if these shoes were worth buying. After your amazing review, I honestly might !
The did pretty good for something that's very much a gimmick. Kind of like an art piece you'd wear to certain kinds of parties or events if you have the money.
Honestly I can see these working as wonderful cosplay boots for some characters. Could potentially even work as a fursuit foot base to build on. Its a fun reference for the Astro Boy nerds or expensive rainboots for the rest of the crowd 😂
I tried to find an astroboy nerd, but it seems that they are all either in a cemetery or nursing homes. Not a very marketable target audience, I believe. lol
Wow, much more functional than I would've thought - personally would never wear, but respect that MSCHF is out there doing this kind of experimentation and punking the culture.
Honestly, I wouldn't mind them around the shop, they seem like quite good protection for toes and don't pick up wood shavings (and in any case could be just washed with hose).
Greetings from Canada! I don't know if you take requests from the comments section, but I was wondering if you'd be willing to make a video on some Canadian made work boots? There are dozens of companies to choose from here, like dayton, Canada West, and companies that also have very unique boot designs, like manitobah Also, seeing reviews about Canada West's 34309 lace-up boot or Daytons 6406 csa work boot would be good because I've been looking at purchasing those, but no reviews exist about them online. Thanks for making such great videos!🇨🇦
Does RosebAnvil have any kind of a "TRIP HAZARD" test? I thinkgoing down or up a regular set of stairs could be a life safety challenge. So many are willing to suffer for their art, but to go through traction after buying somebody else's art is a step too far. Thanks for the analysis.
You might even be able to justify the $350, despite being made in China, because they must have developed a pretty wacky process to fuse all those different foam parts together and have it look fairly seamless in the end. The tooling needed to start production of these things probably wasn't cheap at all.
I actually love these, they're definitely not my thing but imo fashion should be fun. I love seeing people enjoy themselves in their clothing and footwear
Great video, interesring and in depth. Just a to nitpick, I think the flame test may lead to misleading result. A torch is a really focused source of heat, I would've liked to see what happens if you wear them next to a fireplace, stove or even a stage light.
I'd love to see you cut a Danner RAT boot. I've been wearing mine for over a year, everyday.... Very impressed with them. Love your videos, keep up the awesome bisections!!
My first thought was that one's foot would just be swimming in this boot but thumbs up to the designers for making it wearable on the inside and ridiculous on the outside😅
I can see how these sell - my (53 year old and Japanese) wife saw me watching this and asked what they are. She said they are 'Cool' but you need to dress up to wear them. 😆
Seeing where their inspiration is from, the only correct way to wear them is these boots, a speedo, and an improbable hairstyle... and nothing else. Pass.
Back in the early 70's a Girl.. Friend of mine bought a set of very light Pair of Red Nylon Covered insulated Moon Boots..I tried them on once and it was like having nothing on your feet.. nothings new it just lies dormant for a while... till someone discovers it again..
The creator of the big red boots is such a genius..matching oversized boots for today's oversized fashion. It's a beautiful climax to the oversized fashion trend that pervaded during the pandemic.
I love that these exist. We need art that pushes boundaries, and this is certainly wearable art. We need creatives like this to keep innovation and progress going forward.
Honestly, it doesn’t really matter how well made they are. If a person legitimately wore these as their main pair of shoes, the weight of them alone would quickly cause serious hip pains.
This would be the most interesting shoe to see Retail vs Reps. Very interested to see what the differences in their structure is considering these are some pretty intricately crafted boots.
1st thought: "TOO COSPLAY!" 2nd thought:"maybay?!🤔" Thanks for doing these! as a big astroboy fan(and lover of interesting fashion) ive been fascinated by these but thought they werent worth the hype and looked way too cosplay to buy. Now that youve dissected and broken them down i want a pair to display & perhaps sometimes wear! 😭 i wish u guys woulda tested going up or down stairs though haha like are they functional enough for that?! ANOTHER greatttt video nonetheless! 👏🏾👏🏾💕
The three-chambered section above the foot is a squish chamber so you can get your feet into and out of them. That chamber collapses so your foot can angle in and angle out. See the cutaway to understand.
These are super fun boots. I love it when you do unique footwear like this boot. I'm not surprised by the engineering. Seeing people walking in them was an indicator that they were well made because they had a fairly normal gait. If their gait was stompy and wide then I would assume the boots were gimmicky garbage.
I remember a Calvin & Hobbes Sunday strip from the mid 80s where Calvin wants his hair cut to look like Astroboy. Even then I thought it was weird Calvin would know Astroboy. But Calvin would want these boots, and I don't remember if he has nipples.
Someone wore a pair of them to my daughter's community college graduation. They look so crazy in real life! I'm 50 years old and I would absolutely rock a pair given the chance.
I hate hydrolysis - my Hanwag Tatra boots lost their outsoles due to this while I was actually hiking through the Tatra mountains. Surprisingly, the rest of the midsole held up pretty well and I did get back to the hotel without any accidents. Still, not the best feeling, especially since there were still patches of snow.
I like them. They’re ridiculous but they’re also so out of place that they completely stand out. I kinda want one now after watching this, just for the chaos it would cause.
Excellent analysis. I’d seen these boots around online endlessly (as well as the collective’s other art/commerce pranks), and I LOVE Astro Boy… Even though he’s SO important in the history of Anime, he’s not the first or the “grandfather of all animation” by a long shot. The first Anime feature was 1945’s Momotaro: Sacred Sailors, and the first animated film was Fantasmagorie in 1908.
I had moon boots (look them up) they were like those boots but o wore them during the winter because I had a big paper route and nothing else keep my feet warm.
That's great! Thanks for your willingness to step up and admit to it. If I could afford them I'd buy a pair just to give myself joy everytime I looked at them and to make others laugh and give them a release. Too much rage in the world. We all need a fun break.
@@nuthinbutlove You wouldn't worry people would potentially direct their rage at you for wearing them? People are getting violently triggered seeing clothing items with rainbows on them today.

im surprised that mschf wouldnt put that cutaway view on their website, it would make the price alot more justifiable since most people think it will be a single piece of foam like a croc,

But I think people should play if they want. It’s not chaos so much as it is debugging the stasis of ordinary. Girls would rock in these pretty well. The guys, yeah they can do it:)
It’s not a boot, it’s an iq test.

Thank you for exposing the substance to go with the form of this shoe. I love how it looks dumb but a lot of real thought went into it. It just goes to show that something so simple can be industrially designed so well.
With its broad footprint and the insulating properties of the foam, it might be good for walking in the snow
In the 80's there was a similar fashion item called "Moon boots", they were build for walking on snow, thick foam insulation for protection against the cold and a big footprint to keep you from sinking too deep in soft snow, I think these boots will do the same during the winter in ski sports ressorts.
Yes! Reminded me of [an even uglier version of ]Moon boots
I remember Moonboots!
Might be too cost prohibitive, but I think it be great to see some designer shoes/boots/sneakers cut apart. Margiela Tabis, RO Geobaskets, YSL boots.
Saw the ysl boots repaired on another channel, what utter shit it was, more or less a scam sadly.
But I concur, I’d love to see that as well. My dream would be Carol Christian poell boots!

Probably the best take on the Big Red Boots I've seen so far. I was one to dismiss this... but you have to give them credit for the design to make it work. The burning tests also made me aware of something I've never thought of in terms of designs of things like these as well. Great job on the video. Very objective.
Considering how hard it is to remove them, yes, it is really important they don't catch fire.
Ironically, ghese boots would likely make excellent snake boots because if you got struck at by most snakes, there's no way that it's fangs would be able to reach your skin through all of the foam shapes.
No. The material from the ankle upward looks to be around only 1/4". These would also not be warm enough for a normal northern winter.
they're pretty thin in reality, I met someone who had a pair on and they didn't seem that thick.
@@DUCKSAREEVILLLLLLLL >talking about snakes

I'm sorry, but what the heck are snake boots!?
These Astroboy boots are a nice surprise. Did not think Astroboy was still fashionable.
Tbh, I was looking at these boots thinking “I’ve seen these before in a cartoon” but for the life of me couldn’t remember which one!Thank you for reminding me of a show I used to watch when I was little!
They also look a lot like the boots Hilda wears.
I get the Astro Boy immediately. They also make me think Mikey Mouse feeling fancy in red. I was surprised by how detailed it was inside. I also expected it to be just foam.
Too bad they don't turn into jet thrusters, as they're certainly big enough!
I am so glad the creators openly stated their inspiration! I feared I may have "read too much" into the design when I first saw an online ad for them.
My first thought was “normal boots.”
The first time that I saw these, someone had bolted a pair of rollerskate plates to them and took them for a trip around the skate park. I thought that they would be really floppy but seeing how difficult it was to get them off, my mind has been changed.
that's legendary
You had me at Astro Boy, they are so much like his boots, I loved that show growing up as a kid. Great review as always.
i am with you 100%, weston. i thought you were gonna melt these boots to the ground but they ended up taking us all by surprise. wish i could spare the money, i'd totally rock a pair. thanks for the fair & entertaining review.
the editor is seriously doing a great job with these vids
An unexpected but appreciated discussion about what makes something art with Rose Anvil.
Biggest joke is the people who paid $1200+ for them when the hype was new. Now you can get them for less than retail for $280
amd theyre worth maybe 3 bucks
People are too serious and overthink everything! These are fun! I absolutely love them and I can’t wait till I get my pair
🤣🤡
350$
Are you good bro?
@@null0452 I got them for less than that, and $350 isn’t that much money 😂
I remember when the original Moon boots came out... same attitudes were out there but dang, they worked.
Mad respect for you recognizing what MSCHF is about. I love their art
I've actually been waiting since these came out for you to cut them up loll
Certainly a good start to an Astro Boy cosplay.
I saw them and my mind went to Astro Boy right away. I think someone there is a anime nerd, just a little.
I have seen these boots for so long, heard a lot of things, and now that the trend has died down, I know that I still really love these boots. I’m a fashion designer and love artsy looks and was wondering if these shoes were worth buying. After your amazing review, I honestly might !
Astro Boy/Mighty Atom costume, the hardest part to do. Excellent. Also, checkit against a New Rock boot, that is pretty tame size for those!
Enjoyed this a lot, great dive. I appreciated the going into the history and design origins.
Of course it's the fkn furries that like this sht
"Fursuit"? Jesus. Bunch of meritless freaks, should be pre-emptively locked up.
I tried to find an astroboy nerd, but it seems that they are all either in a cemetery or nursing homes. Not a very marketable target audience, I believe. lol
For a horse fursuit they could make a good base for hooves

Wow, much more functional than I would've thought - personally would never wear, but respect that MSCHF is out there doing this kind of experimentation and punking the culture.
Honestly, I wouldn't mind them around the shop, they seem like quite good protection for toes and don't pick up wood shavings (and in any case could be just washed with hose).
Greetings from Canada! I don't know if you take requests from the comments section, but I was wondering if you'd be willing to make a video on some Canadian made work boots? There are dozens of companies to choose from here, like dayton, Canada West, and companies that also have very unique boot designs, like manitobah
Also, seeing reviews about
Canada West's 34309 lace-up boot or Daytons 6406 csa work boot
would be good because I've been looking at purchasing those, but no reviews exist about them online.
Thanks for making such great videos!🇨🇦
You do you, but I would personally avoid Dayton because of the wage theft thing.
@Nate W yeah I've heard about the controversy. It's such a shame. They have some amazing boots.
I have a pair of Baffins I'll never wear again. I'd send em
Going up would be like a Joe Biden cosplay.
Going down those stairs is what would terrify me, 'cause that's when you really get hurt.
You might even be able to justify the $350, despite being made in China, because they must have developed a pretty wacky process to fuse all those different foam parts together and have it look fairly seamless in the end. The tooling needed to start production of these things probably wasn't cheap at all.
Also that is quite substantial amount of material. Which also has a cost. So you also get lot of weight for the price.
I own these boots and love everything about them except that the foam outsole wears down so fast… any advice on how to protect the outsole?
As a fan of the Mega Man series, I've always secretly loved these boots.
I’ve wanted to know what’s inside of these for so long!!!!
I'd love to see you cut a Danner RAT boot. I've been wearing mine for over a year, everyday.... Very impressed with them.
Love your videos, keep up the awesome bisections!!
I saw a young chap wearing these and i asked him: Why did you steal papa smurf's shoes?
The tpu crumble happened to me here in Utah. My boots were in a suitcase in my garage for about two years, so don't do that!
😆
I can see that lol
Someone wears cosplay outside of a convention and suddenly it’s progressive and innovative.
Yes, clown shoes are indeed progressive
What innovation? Its just there to put on your feet just like any other boots out there. If it comes with a flying rocket then its progressive.
@@wienersmcbutts cosplay are those things too 🤗

Honestly, it doesn’t really matter how well made they are. If a person legitimately wore these as their main pair of shoes, the weight of them alone would quickly cause serious hip pains.

Your reviews/tests get better and better just by how much previous data you have by now to compare it with.
The three-chambered section above the foot is a squish chamber so you can get your feet into and out of them. That chamber collapses so your foot can angle in and angle out. See the cutaway to understand.
The boots are great. They look so simple and a great call back to early cartoons. Truly a great piece of wearable art
In addition to Astro Boy, there was an ancient board game called “SORRY!” These remind me of one of the game pieces. I love them.

I'm not surprised by the engineering. Seeing people walking in them was an indicator that they were well made because they had a fairly normal gait. If their gait was stompy and wide then I would assume the boots were gimmicky garbage.
Even if it were a good boot, do we really wanna look like Astro Boy?

I hate hydrolysis - my Hanwag Tatra boots lost their outsoles due to this while I was actually hiking through the Tatra mountains. Surprisingly, the rest of the midsole held up pretty well and I did get back to the hotel without any accidents. Still, not the best feeling, especially since there were still patches of snow.
I kinda love the boot. I've seen a few fit pics (speciffically I've seen Danny Brown wearing them) and it genuanly looks extremely good imo
