Anyone planning to take beginner surf lessons should start swimming Australian Crawl - head up freestyle - for several weeks before their vacation so they don't get tired and sore on the first day of paddling. You'll get way more out of the lessons if you're prepared with both the strength/endurance for paddling and the banana arch posture.

Sorry I'm about a year late! But one all-around workout that is excellent and extremely beneficial when you're out in the water are deadlifts. Deadlifts work every muscle in your body - ESPECIALLY the erector muscles in the back. Deadlifts may seem intimidating for some but don't be! Start with just the bar, then slowly add more weight as your body gets used to it. I should also add, one doesn't need to lift heavy weights in order to be a good surfer, the more time you spend out in the water - the more you work and build up the primary muscles used for surfing!

if you don't mind me adding. I believe the head up (banana) also gets you to lay up towards the front of the board just enough to get the nose under the water. when you get in the banana position, your weight goes back towards your knees and brings the nose up a little and gets you planing better across the water. body position in the board is kinda the most important thing

Hi Guys, I've been surfing for around 55 years. This past decade I've had 2 Lumbar (lower back) surgeries and I had my second Cervical (neck) fusion a month ago. I'm looking forward to getting back into the water in several months, this summer, when the water warms up. I'm not sure if I've have so many spinal problems due to poor techniques in paddling, etc. or just years of bad judgement on pulling in on too many closeouts. Many sessions my best waves are the ones I didn't think I could make.....Anyway, I enjoy your tips and I'm looking forward to many more years of short boarding. Your point of getting a long board our through the surf is very true. I'll stick with duck diving a short board. Aloha !
I have two discs L-3&4 that are pretty much gone. I just started surfing last year and I think it makes learning way more difficult. What surgery did u have on your lower back and what was the deciding factor to go ahead with it?
Long boards are very different across the board. I mean some are like guns that are just like duck diving a shortboard punching through. Then there is the turtle roll which works well, every longboarder should practice it along with controlling the longboard after with retracting the leash quickly if you loose your board that way you don't tie up the lineup. Huge difference between a 10'8 old school heavy tanker and a 8'8 firewire...
This video is actually perfect for me and I'm gonna try it for sure. Since the beginning I always was struggling with my paddling. Recently I came back to surfing and I couldn't paddle back to the spot when I got my first wave, my arms, back and shoulders where exhausted. The thing is that I do excersise more than the average persons.
May I add that activating the banana also opens up the subacromial space which means the rotator cuff (small shoulder muscles) can work more efficiently while also reducing the risk of an overuse injury :D
The moment of realization at 5:12....parents came up asking why I was laughing so hard and if everything was okay; awesome video tho! Just starting out here and this helps a lot! Thanks dudes!
great video. helped me tune up my paddling. i never realized how important being upright was and always thought it was just personal preference. so for the most part ive been paddling too low on my board. i tried this method today as well as focusing on reaching further back on my board for the popup and holy shit.. what a difference. i basically eliminated the percentage of waves where i had bad foot placement. ripped every wave the whole session. it certainly helped that the lineup was empty! this foot placement thing has been plaguing me for a while now whenever i surf boards that are smaller than 6', so thanks sooo much for these videos :)
forgot an important point about the "banana" stance - it moves the center of mass toward the back of the board, improving planing and raising the nose, keeping it out of the water which will bog you down.
Any advice on how to avoid ribcage pain? Not referring to skin bruises, but actual pain in the lower part of the ribcage as a result of paddling. Thank you for this and for the amazing video :)
"Erect banana". Ill use that next time i talk to wahine. Lol! It would be good to talk about the chin down power paddling when you need to get the nose down. I think the erect banana is good when the waves are hollow and pitchy, but sometimes you need to put your chin down to paddle hard when the wave is mushy. Beginners also tend to paddle with their legs splayed open. Knees should be close together and thighs on the board. Spreading your legs allows the tail to lift up and causes nose dives. Dont split the erect banana, lol!
Very much enjoy your videos mate, would like to see something about how to read the sea or the ocean, what are your trick or tips for wave selection on a set and so on... Thank you again.
I injured my shoulder paddling. Hi, I'm a new surfer. I'm 21 5'10 and 170 pounds lean build. I haven't been surfing too long, just on and off the last month. And randomly last week I got bad shoulder pain, and hurt to lift it or lift anything. I believe I got what's called Surfers or swimmers shoulder. I watched this video before learning to surf and I guess I'm doing something wrong. A friend of mine thinks I'm not activating my back maybe enough and relying on my shoulders too much. Any thoughts are welcome, I want to continue to learn to surf, but I don't want to get injured and be inactive again. Especially cause that's all I am during this quarantine. ( My shoulder feels better now but I'm not sure when I could start using it again).
When paddling for longer surf sessions to keep from tiring the muscles it helps to use the S stroke. The S stroke (and slightly open fingers) works like this. Hand engages water, push water slightly away and then back towards surfboard, and then away from board. Any variation of S-stroke works. As hand leaves water you can flick your wrist to bring arm forward faster for next stroke. This will use many different muscles groups so one group gets a break while using other groups of muscles. Try it! With each stroke you''ll get more forward movement and arms do not tire as quickly. 45 years surfing.
Good vid. My paddling is powerful enough but raising your shoulders and head makes a massive difference. My lower back is pretty screwed but defo gonna try these exercises. Thanks 👍
Hi, when i activate that banana position i get quite some pain/irritated feeling in my lower back, is this normal for beginner surfers? or am i kinda injured? great vid.
Hi, you are only the second person I've seen talk about cup hands or loose. The other was an Olympic swimmer. The minor amount of water passing through fingers is nothing compared to drive gain from increase in area. Like with kayaks a large amount of rocker pushing water is a problem. I find when on my 9 foot when faced with big wave I don't even try to dive , I hold on and roll so when water flows over the bottom which is now on top the wave pushes the board down.. I must admit I'm no laird Hamilton but I have fun and enjoy.
I just want to know what to do when caught in the impact zone by a head high++ set. How to survive. What action to take to avoid getting roughed up or worse. I hate paddling out and usually end up ditching my board and swimming for it and getting dragged back by the leash.
Yea that happens to me all the time. Especially when I haven’t surfed for a while. The pain goes away though on your third session. Your body starts getting used to it.
To be safe, you should check first with an orthopedic specialist and/or physical therapist. Your back muscles may need to be strengthen. On the first half of the video the instructor suggests some exercises you can do for that. I also had these difficulties and similar exercises (for my lombar) are helping me to overcome it. But I would add (not being a specialist) that I also do abs and maybe should be working out my legs, because I somehow think these limitations might be systemic. Enjoy your rides!!
Start doing what they call the locust position in yoga. It's hard. After 5-30 seconds, move arms forward into the "superman" position. Also pull ups help a lot with core power.
After a couple of long days in the surf I notice the following muscles ache like hell: trapezius, deltoids, and triceps. Is that normal? Would others concur?
DOES ANYONE GET REALLY SORE RIBS? My rib cage protrudes into the board causing pain and a horrible bruising feeling. It stops me from being able to "activate my banana" correctly for more than a few minutes. I haven't been able to find a solution online... any suggestions? Thanks!
Yo k.b! Respect from the Med lad how you doin'? Any advice on shoulder positioning.. lots of surfers are getting tendons pinched which leads to injuries down the line..
Hi. At 4 minutes into the video, how do you spin around a board like that? It looks effortless. I do a lot of frantic things to swivel the board around. I miss the wave if i am unable to turn around in time. Also could you please make a video on the cork effect on shortboard? The one i see surfers doing to catch a wave with just one or two stroke. Thank you.
To spin the board around, just move your legs in a circular motion, clockwise to turn left, ccw to turn right. Kale's got a tiny board so it will spin fast anyway, if you've got a bigger board you have to pull the nose up so it is almost vertical in the water. Since you already know about the cork effect, there's not much more to explain. You just need to get the timing right, and it takes a lot of practice. If you want to catch a wave using just 2 strokes, you need to be in exactly the right spot on the wave. Again this is not something you can be taught, you just need a lot of experience. If you see surfers catching a lot of waves easily, observe where they position themselves (probably right under the lip). If you're in a spot where you are not sure if you're gonna catch the wave on your head, you're near the perfect spot. You learn a lot faster if you are a little too far on the inside and eat shit than sitting too far on the outside and miss waves because of it.
@@iKillborn2kilNOE yeah the rotation thing might become a video (together with sitting on the board, as it is a challenge for many beginners). the cork thing could be added to that same video but would not work as a stand-alone vid.
Another thing that can help is getting farther back so you can get the nose out of the water and reduce the moment arm of the portions of the board that are in the water resisting your rotation. It's harder to notice in this video since the board is so small, but practicing on a longboard will make the position change more obvious.Practice sitting in the center (as if when waiting for waves) the scooting way back before you begin the rotation.
Thanks, that was really helpful. Can you show us how to turn left and right? When I river surfed at the Vague a Guy river rapid bunny wave, firstly, I could not stay on my surf board due to the rapids and 2, I could not paddle fast and my back hurt. Had to take Advil for a week. One day I will get a real surf in a real ocean, but due to Covid, I have no choice but try to practice in my city🙏🇨🇦🌈🌎🦋🌺🏄♀️
Question about longer, long-boards. How come when catching larger waves one seems to need to flick their legs up right at that moment before you know you got it, to catch it? 'Before pop up' Stronger paddling, deeper paddling, s-paddling doesn't help, just makes one ride the top of it longer before missing it. Don't have this problem with boards under 8'6". :T Setup: 9'8" Pintail, 8.5" Truemes classic center w/3.5" Truemes side bites.
kales, any thoughts on paddling with knees bent vs knees on the board (like in this video)? I've had instructors insist on knees bent (lower leg at 90 degrees, feet in air)
Years later, but my guess would be these instructors had you on a longboard yes? If thats the case then yeah that can make sense gets your weight better positioned etc but if you are riding a performance short board its not really practical
@Kale Brock I just started surfing and when i was paddling i had some neck pain. do you think that's just from not holding my neck properly when paddling?

The S stroke (and slightly open fingers) works like this. Hand engages water, push water slightly away and then back towards surfboard, and then away from board. Any variation of S-stroke works. As hand leaves water you can flick your wrist to bring arm forward faster for next stroke. This will use many different muscles groups so one group gets a break while using other groups of muscles. Try it! With each stroke you''ll get more forward movement and arms do not tire as quickly. 45 years surfing.
Video starts at 3:00 ; it's super useful but 450,000 views x 3 minutes = over 1 million wasted minutes
Good vid. My paddling is powerful enough but raising your shoulders and head makes a massive difference. My lower back is pretty screwed but defo gonna try these exercises. Thanks 👍
Jason Temple the muscle activation should be more in the middle back not the lower - so it shouldn’t flare any injuries ideally if done correctly
Great film, could you show how to use a foam, high buoyancy board for absolute beginners please, cheers
Hi, when i activate that banana position i get quite some pain/irritated feeling in my lower back, is this normal for beginner surfers? or am i kinda injured? great vid.
thank you for this!
Thanks a million for posting this. I’m a beginner, and I paddle incorrectly.
Hi Noel, loving your reviews. What Size/L did you ride in the Phantom and what Size/L do you normally ride?
Hi, you are only the second person I've seen talk about cup hands or loose. The other was an Olympic swimmer. The minor amount of water passing through fingers is nothing compared to drive gain from increase in area. Like with kayaks a large amount of rocker pushing water is a problem. I find when on my 9 foot when faced with big wave I don't even try to dive , I hold on and roll so when water flows over the bottom which is now on top the wave pushes the board down.. I must admit I'm no laird Hamilton but I have fun and enjoy.
Amazing lesson, like always
Ivan Mendelson thank you
This helped a lot. Thanks for sharing
Brian Thompson thank you!
I can't explain how much the banana metaphor helped me
Thank you! Subscribed! 🤙🏽
😅 “shit I made it worst” love the videos!! My husband and I are learning through your videos!! 🤙🏼 So.cali!
I just want to know what to do when caught in the impact zone by a head high++ set. How to survive. What action to take to avoid getting roughed up or worse. I hate paddling out and usually end up ditching my board and swimming for it and getting dragged back by the leash.
Sitting here with ice on my neck wondering what i did wrong! 😂 Will be putting this into practice when im next out
D3l4br0 yeah do it!
Lmao!!! Awesome video man! Thanks! Love the realization of the “banana” posture!
Bullseye 276 😁😁😁
Over the past 15 years I always get a sore spot / abrasion on my stomach right near my Sternum after long sessions. Any tips on how to avoid that?
Ben Dillon I think it’s unavoidable for some people :( my lower rib cage protrudes slightly on one side and that always fucks me over but never mind
Check out the “Rib Rocket” - it might change your life.
Yeah its a tricky one I know a few people who have this problem.
Yea that happens to me all the time. Especially when I haven’t surfed for a while. The pain goes away though on your third session. Your body starts getting used to it.
I love the board shorts you wear. Where did you buy it and what is the brand thank you.
Great video, very helpful. Is their a link to where to look at one of those blue boards closer? Thanks
NO sorry :(
Easy to say, hard to do. How I can rise my head up and make a bannana when my body is unable to do it now?? I know it very well.
pangrac1 practice
Do you have any videos for before surf and after surf stretch.
3 mins holding that position is super hard mate. But I will try 1 min then 2 and gradually I will do 3
After a couple of long days in the surf I notice the following muscles ache like hell: trapezius, deltoids, and triceps. Is that normal? Would others concur?
ive just started a coupe of weeks ago. went for two sessions today, just about every muscle aches in my whole body
@@tomcuddy:) It's good for you.
That’s why you need to activate the banana
DOES ANYONE GET REALLY SORE RIBS? My rib cage protrudes into the board causing pain and a horrible bruising feeling. It stops me from being able to "activate my banana" correctly for more than a few minutes. I haven't been able to find a solution online... any suggestions? Thanks!
Tricky situation - try a thicker wetsuit or something 🤷🏼♂️
missing australia! nice video, bro!
@@robarnoldbik8014 looks like another video haha
Sitting, rotating, quick rotation, quick pedaling horizontally tho catch a wave
@@iKillborn2kilNOE yeah the rotation thing might become a video (together with sitting on the board, as it is a challenge for many beginners). the cork thing could be added to that same video but would not work as a stand-alone vid.
Agreed, some tips for this would be awesome
One day I will get a real surf in a real ocean, but due to Covid, I have no choice but try to practice in my city🙏🇨🇦🌈🌎🦋🌺🏄♀️
great info! what location is this...australia??????
Nicole Szczesny 😁😁
It’s up in Sydney - pretty nice hey!
Good stuff!
fanks 🤓
Question about longer, long-boards. How come when catching larger waves one seems to need to flick their legs up right at that moment before you know you got it, to catch it? 'Before pop up'
Stronger paddling, deeper paddling, s-paddling doesn't help, just makes one ride the top of it longer before missing it. Don't have this problem with boards under 8'6". :T
Setup: 9'8" Pintail, 8.5" Truemes classic center w/3.5" Truemes side bites.
Great video. Whats your set up (gear) for water shots? Thanks
Sony FS700
kales, any thoughts on paddling with knees bent vs knees on the board (like in this video)? I've had instructors insist on knees bent (lower leg at 90 degrees, feet in air)
Years later, but my guess would be these instructors had you on a longboard yes? If thats the case then yeah that can make sense gets your weight better positioned etc but if you are riding a performance short board its not really practical
@Kale Brock I just started surfing and when i was paddling i had some neck pain. do you think that's just from not holding my neck properly when paddling?
I have a question in the beginning of the video where did you get those glasses from I would love to know because they look sick
Ji Kale!! What about thighs muscles exercises??
Do you guys do any long board videos?
Great video!!!
