I'm from Jersey City but my father was born in Saxton. From the 1950s to the late 60s I visited Saxton (my grandfather and both gr-grandfathers worked on the H&BT RR). I liked to walk alone up to Sunday Rock, away from all the relatives I really didn't know. I don't know how many times my grandmother, born in 1897, warned me to watch for the giant black snakes. Nobody ever claimed to see one but they all believed that they were there. My great grandmother, born in 1876, told me that it was a story to keep children from wandering off into the woods.
I could see the viability of that being just a child safety story. You wander into the woods near the lake away from Saxton and disappear into a hole in the ground, nobody will find you. But at the same time, the viability of the reality of the lost snakes is undeniable and a very different type of scary.
I have seen quite a few monster snakes in this area. So I am not 100% against it being a possibility. BUT... would call tomfoolery before just believing it.
I am GenX... we never minced words and ALWAYS have called out the BS. Probably why our kids are so into only telling BS in videos and on short form social media. Moment we could not spank 'em anymore, they went fantasy crazy.
McMurtries Bar, now that's where you get the facts lol. Only ever there once, my buddies in a K5 Blazer drove me on mountain roads and had to go through a swollen crick to get there.
McMurtries... definitely get something there and may disappear in the woods. McMurtries is on 26 past Corn Propts Mill and Donation toward Jacksons Corner. My old stomping grounds from '83- '86 were just outside "the fort".
That’s a great story. I found it great that we have been camping probably mere feet the farm. By the way in the last 10 years no one has reported anything that big.
Local lore, who could tell the tallest tale, perhaps? The old taverns, general store etc were great places to swap stories. Nice touch telling the "horse and child" story
Yeah... I love the tall tales I hear around here. But the crazier they are, the more one should consider believing it. I remember a minor flood of the Stone Creek dam in Huntingdon (by the ball park) where someone said they caught a 3 foot long Trout. Being an avid fisherman I laughed... until I saw the pictures.
I certainly had never heard of this before. Very interesting, another he said she said and stretching the truth. As always, thanks for all your hard work!!!!
I just came from the Broad Tops Miners Museum today, saw nothing about the snake mantioned there. But... now I'm curious what stories if any would come up if I'd asked about it. I'm curious now too if this is related to Raystown Ray. Keep up the good work! - Mike
Ohhhhhh yea raystown ray that could be a connection wasnt it seen by 7 points or between there and susquehanock camp wich a ways from area of broad top
@@adamgladfelter8762 i asked and will ask again... I was told it was an ERROR. I personally wonder abot if was error, mirror error, or some weird belief
I have seen a LOT of snakes since I have been in these parts. I do not know if my first reaction would be to camera up or pucker up coming across even a 5 foot snake. When my dad and I were driving through Tussey we came across a 3-4 foot Timber Rat... and THAT made me want to stand 10+ feet away.
I grew up in Broad Top, Saxton to be specific. I ran the woods of all these places as a kid. Although we have LOTS of snakes, I promise you there was never a 40ft snake but I think it was just a rumor to keep us kids out of the abandoned coal mines. Ha, Ha, ha….the Friendly…OMG…you never would have got an honest answer there 😂😂😂
I FULLY concur with what you are saying. Ohhh the tales my mother would tell me about what would get me if I went to certain places or what would hurt me if I did certain things. LOL
Thanks!
THANK YOU!

I'm in Mifflin County and my Grandmother heard stories of the snake. She was born in 1895- 1980
That keeps with what I was able to dig up.
Interesting. Never heard this one.
MOST people, even those from the area, have never heard this story. Myself included.
Another great video as usual.
I appreciate that

I really need to dig into the possibility of timelines and Raystown Ray with this snake thing.

LOL it's Raystown Ray lol
Shhhh... I am getting to that.
I've always wondered if these large snakes escaped from the circus train crash in Tyrone pa.
@@buttons157 jump over to my video about Tyrone Circus train wreck and then over to Raystown Ray. You will not be disappointed.

I am linking these histories together for a future video on my thoughts of where this may all have come from... so keep watching :D
WHY is the Broadtop Train Yards compass askew? The world may never know....
