That air shaft? Kinda REALLY freaky! ☺ Oh, the bottom showed up well enough to make me think about moving farther back in my chair! 😄 And, BTW, you CAN'T be too old to do this! I rely on all of you young ones on UA-cam to do the "on the edge" exploring, cause it's really cool but I'm too old to be out doing it!
Another good one Cliff. Glad it was suggested. I usually "binge" your content for an hour or more on some weekends (can't watch just one!), but had never seen this one.

The fossils were neat! Climbing around like that is good and remember you're only as old as you feel...I'm 65 and some days feel like 80 other days like 45...I have low back and hip issues from Hashimoto's...I got vertigo looking in that fan shaft OMG! Thanks for the hike!

I have a picture of the fan that feed the mine, my dad and uncles worked there when they were young.

This particular one in the video ? Would have loved seein it still intact, looking at the bent up hardware in the slabs where the motor and bearing pedestal would have sat, im gonna guess either scrappers got to it or it was moved to another mine.

I would have loved seeing that fanhouse while the fan was still there and intact, both the original steam powered guibal fan as well as the (electric?) one that replaced it, as im sure the original one was atleast for a time kept as a backup.

Thanks WW! That is a spooky hole. Those places where the shafts go down down down are spooky at best. Years ago I threw a rock down an old shaft kind of like this one and it took a long long time to hit bottom. I often wonder about animals falling down such places. Another great WW Vid and Kind Thanks once again. DaveyJO

Agreed. There used to be an open shaft in West Scranton back in some former coal mining areas across from the intermediate school. I almost ended up in it the one day when by myself. I was walking on what I now realize was wood and I went to take another step and there was nothing to step onto. I got out of that area quicker than I've ever moved in my lifetime. Once I was clear I took a rock and tossed it in there. I heard nothing for a good 5-10 seconds followed by a loud splash.

There's one up in Springbrook Township way back on some dirt/mud roads off of Bowen's Road. It's absolutely MASSIVE. I remember swimming in the lagoon at the top of it as a teenager in the summertime.

@@thewanderingwoodsman7227 I just tried seeing if Google Maps would at least let me get some GPS coordinates to get you close to the one I mentioned. Apparently the side road up in Springbrook Township that I lived on as a kid was not deemed worthy enough to get mapped.
Though I could definitely link the general area and you'd unfortunately have to figure out the rest. It's not too far off the main dirt road it branches off from though.
Here's an image from PA 690 staring straight at Bowen's Road, which you'd have to go up till it turns into a dirt road then follow that till you see a dirt (and rocky) road going off slightly to the right just before a curve. Definitely need a high truck to get to this one.

All you need to do is anchor a rope around a solid hardwood tree with a running bowline then descend down in using a figure 8 with a harness, then use an ascender to get back out,no need for all that pulley stuff... and of coarse an o2 sensor and hard hat.

lol wrong county the mining operations were in Columbia county and Northumberland county. the village of locustdale limits fall in 3 counties just no houses are in the Northumberland county part. the mine shaft opening in the side of the hill, just be mindful of sinkholes behind it. I was up there one day and all was good and the very next day 2 large sink holes opened.

    • @thewanderingwoodsman7227
