- Played on PC. There will be some occasional framerate stutters but nothing too bad. Anyway, here's a full playthrough (normal and shadow levels) of the new Ghosts 'n Goblins game on the hardest difficulty with no damage taken. I originally thought this would take me a couple of months to record considering how brutally difficult the game can be but surprisingly, it only took a week. Resurrection seems to have fallen under a lot of people's radar despite coming out this year so I feel like it's my duty to get the word out for this underappreciated game.

Mini-Review:
"Kaettekita Makaimura" (Return of Demon World Village), known by its western name, Ghosts 'n Goblins Resurrection is my Game of the Year for 2021. I think what makes this game stick out in my mind as one of the best action platformers out there is just how well designed a lot of the encounters are. Like previous G'nG games, there's an emphasis on memorizing level and enemy patterns but what makes Resurrection stand out is how it layers both fixed and randomized enemy patterns on top of one another, so much so that encounters feel both chaotic and tight, keeping repeated playthroughs feeling fresh. Foreknowledge of a level can only take you so far. It requires good intuition and quick decision making to get a slow-ass knight from point A to B unscathed and that's what I love about it. In a way, it's more a game about thinking on your feet rather than just memorization and good execution.
A few tips:
- Don't always use the Dagger. I know it's sort of a meme to "GET THE KNIFE" but the Dagger isn't the only good weapon. Crossbow is arguably the best weapon since the upgraded version can clear entire screen of enemies and quickly destroy big enemies that take more than one hit (since you're landing more shots on them). Golden armor + Crossbow + Doppelganger will demolish most bosses. Other great weapons include the Spiked Ball which can roll uphill and ignore the Flying Knights' shield, and the Shield which deflect all projectiles and can faze through walls. The point is that every weapon has their advantages and disadvantages so don't expect the Dagger to be the answer to every situations.
- Don't be afraid to use the skill tree. I'm not too big on skill trees in games but there are a lot of really useful skills and magic. It won't make the game any easier but it'll help take the edge off. Kitted Out lets you carry up to three weapons. Transmogrifrog and Medusa is good for dealing with annoying enemies like the Magicians. Doppelganger is good for boss fights and clearing screens of enemies. So on and so forth. You can remove umbral bees from one branch and place into another branch for a different set of skills/magic.
- Learn the chest locations. Every third chest you spawn will contain Golden armor, assuming if you still have your regular armor on. It's often better not to open chests as it sometimes can spawn a Magician or a weapon you don't want. You can use a chest as a temporary platform (standing on a chest too long will cause it to break).
- In every G'nG game, you have a rigid jump arc. This may seem like a flaw but it's designed that way for an important mechanic. Because you jump in a fixed arc, you're able to shoot backwards while jumping forward without altering your direction midair. This "fadeaway" shooting mechanic is what helps gives you space to avoid projectiles and enemies while staying on the offensive. Also, Arthur doesn't seem have a pill-shaped hitbox so he's able to jump and land on edges without slipping off.
- Always be thinking a couple steps ahead. This may seems obvious but you shouldn't just be reacting to every projectile and enemy that comes at you. The more you play, the more you realize that the game is always trying to punish you for making impulsive decisions. For example, a Sickle Weasel is coming straight at you. Your first instinct is to jump over it. You jump, but then he stops just so you land on him and take damage. It may seem like a coincidence but there are multiple situations like this that are design just to catch you out. Analysis each situation you come across and plan out your route accordingly rather than just react.
- Enemies takes a second for their hitbox to be active when spawning in. Some enemies will take longer. Use that to your advantage.

See, this is the visual aesthetic approach I wish all developers would take when remaking classic games! Perfectly captures the essence of the original. Almost like an idealized nostalgic memory of the game.
Yes, there's a real graphic novel/comic book feeling to it. It looks like a kid's game but in a great way. Like you said, it perfectly captures the essence of the original.

Oh no it's not, to say the least.
Having completed the true ending on Squire, and one loop on Knight, i have to say, this video opened my eyes to the way i ought to be approaching Legend. having the abillity to take more hits on lower difficulties kind of made me sloppy, I wasn't respecting enemy density. seeing this more methodical, one-kill-at-a-time approach is great.
Also, I 100% agree with your feelings on the game. It's so, so good. Very tightly tuned, and with the way enemy patterns come at you, it's like jazz. Pure memorization isn't enough, you have to assess the situation screen by screen and make snap decisions with slow execution times. No filler, just solid encounter after solid encounter. So good.

I personally think legend should also have the rebirth checkpoint it bored me to death retrying a section of a stage. Any normal stage would take me about 3-4 hours to complete excluding shadow stages
No filler, lmao.
The game has easier, tedious segments followed by gotcha/RNG/trial and error segments with no checkpoints inbetween, making people repeat the tedious parts several times just to practice the curveball parts.
It's bloat incarnate with poor checkpointing.
This remake is absolutely gorgeous and imaginary. The character and level design is pure genius and huge improvement over the original games (which were already mind-blowing at their times). Being a great fan as I was a kid I am so happy that they made this awesome remake 👻

I have to say this game is a pain in the ass to beat as I have been killed an endless amount of times and I have been playing this game for a few days.
Not that I'm going to even get a "No-hit past 5 enemies," but this was amazing! Also, the game is ON SALE NOW for approx $9.99 (lowest price ever!) on Switch, XBOX and PS stores until about 10/31. I say it's time for to buy and try that "No-hit 6 enemy run". hehe

Edit: I beat the game! The true ending final boss was super easy. I had golden armor crossbow + lvl 2 doppelganger. He died in 15 seconds

It has 4 difficulty settings its really fun on 2/4. The bosses seem to get easier after level 3

my only complaint, (And it's not even that big of a deal) was the generic boss music they used, rather than the music which was relevant to each level with a boss twist to it, ie: the Sega Genesis Ghouls 'n Ghosts version, otherwise I love this! Thanks so much for sharing!! And well played!

I noticed in Hellfire Hamlet you could switch armor and weapons on the fly. That's an unlockable from game completion, I'm assuming?
You can't switch armor but you can switch weapons. You unlock it from the skill tree.
I've not played this b4 and UA-cam suggested it to me. It's impressive to watch, but I'm cringing at all the loot you find and pass up. I'm sure you know what you're doing though.

do you know if the base levels (non shadow levels) get harder after a second playthrough or if they stay the same?
They get slightly harder. It's mostly the same with some remixed enemy placements and denser enemy patterns.
@@Nzadnilbad you think the shadow levels are worth it? I was having some fun on legend mode and beat the base game but I rage pretty easily… i’ll prolly play em not in the near future tho lol
@@cesarflores1145 The shadow levels pretty much crosses the line into unfair bullshit. Some of later shadow stages are almost undoable without the aid of magic/skills. The only reason to do them is to see the true ending which also requires you to do all the hell holes and find a randomly hidden chest for a demon orb. Also, the very last boss is lame and easy. So nah, imo not worth it. I've been replaying the game a bunch recently (since it's a Halloween themed game), and I been having a lot fun going for a low amount/no death run of the base game on legend so I recommend doing that instead.

I have a problem in this game: I can't shoot down.
This means that I'm stuck in this place of the game that is shown here at 7'09". There a snake comes from downwards where I have to shoot down - however this doesn't function. (I have changed the keys to the arrow keys, so down is the cursor down key from my PC.
Does anyone have a solution here?

Hey ! At 33:00 how do you have the red devil to the left ? He is always to the right
He can randomly spawn either on the left or the right. Most of the time, he’s usually on the left for me.
The demon spawns depending which way you go. This means you can fake going to the left and then go right so he doesnt spawn

This might be the best way to "experience" this game... To watch someone else play it... Dark Souls has nothing on this. No-thing. This seems to genuinely damage my self-esteem somehow. The game is awesome and I am just pathetic at it...
Hopefully some of the tips I left in the description helps you and others out, if you choose to play it. I feel it’s a game of high quality but barely anyone is talking about it so if anything, please put the word out for this game :)
These visuals are seriously incredible. When I played Ghouls and Ghosts for the first time after GnG the art style was awesome. This is even better than both of them. This is a visual treat crafted with very good care. What a good fantasy world they built, I'd love to see a first person and third person RPG in a world like this. With the verticality of Dark Souls and the same smallish map size that feels huge. Seriously imagine a Dark Souls engine version of this game with this same art style. Ghost and Goblins Resurrection needs to be praised!
The graphics are great I dont like the emphasis on the "Painting" aestetic and the cutscenes are too long. Less Presentation more gameplay would be better
If on 1:05:46 you're playing your 1st playthrough of Shadow Graveyard, how can it be that the hell hole is available to be entered?
I never said it's my first playthrough. I collected all the wisps and did the hell hole before recording my run of the entire level.
People confuse terrible checkpointing with hard. Thx for playing it so I didn't need to.

Telling me you’re competent at some “tough” games but gets filtered by this game says very little about the game itself and more so on how easily you give up when any curveballs are thrown at you.

Only thing that's kinda lame, is the Mirror isn't even really actually 'needed' to kill Lucifer. I found that disappointing. Nice play though.

The hit box has got to be tiny. I've counted a few times where Arthur's sprite and an enemies sprite overlapped which should have been considered a hit.
I wouldn’t say tiny but they are deceptively smaller than the enemies’ sprite
