The Untold Story of Cuba's Support for African Independence Movements Under Fidel Castro

  • democracynow.org - Across the developing world, former Cuban President Fidel Castro was viewed as a hero who stood up to the United States and assisted Marxist guerrillas and revolutionary governments around the world. In the 1970s, he sent Cuban troops to Angola to support a left-wing government over the initial objections of Russia. Cuba helped defeat South African insurgents in Angola and win Namibia’s independence from South Africa in 1990, adding pressure on the apartheid regime. After Nelson Mandela was freed from prison in 1990, he repeatedly thanked Castro. We feature excerpts of Castro speaking about Cuba’s role in Angola and South Africa, including a clip of his first meeting with anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela, and speak with Bill Fletcher, a founder of the Black Radical Congress, and Peter Kornbluh, director of the Cuba Documentation Project and co-author of "Back Channel to Cuba: The Hidden History of Negotiations Between Washington and Havana."

    I was born in Cuba in 1989, grew up there for 14 years. Back then I used to hate Fidel and his ideals. I felt as if we had to live in poverty because the PCC(Communist Party) wanted to show the world how great they were at the expense of their own people. Now I tend to think of him as a visionary, he was trying to achieve something greater than national stability, he was trying to change the world for the better and I admire that.

      DKhisa I am Haitian that is so true they gave Haiti an embargo after they gain their independence in 1804. Haiti had an embargo in the 90's also. Cuba had an embargo since the cold war recently lifted by Obama. An embargo cripple a country to the core. you cannot bring technology, resources for education, industrial product, they can only survive with what they have in the country. You cant trade, you can only feed people with only things that are in the country. No country can develop with an embargo because you are isolated from the rest of the world.

      I've been to Havana. Love the Cuban people. Wish they were free, as most of them do. So many begged me to help them get out.

  • @mmb811
    @mmb811 2 місяці тому

    6:35 not quite true, it was in fact the other way round, Cuito Cuanavale was a stunning humiliation of the Soviet/Cuban/MPLA forces, and SANDF captured a large amount of Soviet equipment when the Cuban/Soviet/MPLA forces chaotically and hastily retreated, including several Soviet tanks and a fully functioning Sam-8 missile system. The airfield was destroyed by the SANDF, and what remained of the Cuban/Soviet/MPLA forces were pinned down and desperately still defending the defensive perimeters of the town.
    At the negotiation table between SANDF and Cuba, Cuba requested that they be allowed to withdraw from Angola with their honor intact and that the truth of their humiliating defeat not be revealed to the world, which the SANDF agreed to as a sign of good faith to keep the fragile negotiations in tact. It is due to this fact that the MYTH of the so called "Defeat of the SANDF" got started, and the stories and myth has since just kept spiraling out of control to what is now reported as "fact" in this Democracy Now video. Sadly the battle statistics of losses after the battle (from both side), interviews of those that took part, and some video footage, confirms the SANDF'S version of the battle's outcome. (Also ask yourself, why would they ONLY show SANDF vehicle "retreating" after the battle all intact and working condition, but not a single vehicle from the so called Cuban/Soviet/MPLA "victorious" forces)
    PS: Don't take the fact that this correction of the real facts is in any way me being on the side of the SANDF.
    The SANDF was defending an Atrocious Apartheid South African Regime that wanted apartheid to continue. Sadly 90% of the troops in the SANDF was so propagandized by the South African state controlled media, schools, and news outlets, that they did not even realise what they were REALLY fighting for against SWAPO. The war in Namibia/Angola was wrong on so many levels, and I doubt any of those SANDF troops would have continued fighting if they realized what they were actually defending!

USSR never gets its due--mainly I think in the west for aesthetic reasons. USSR were fat had bad teeth they SAVED Vietnam and pase Fidel they sure helped. Mandela said so OVER and OVER!! and by the way who stood by Cuba in its struggle against US Imperialism? Henri Alleg said that Che warned against romanticizing Cuba cool long hair and those neat berets--without the USSR Cuba would be GONE Vietnam would be GONE and South Africa would still be under the sway of the Racists!! Hell 26 million soviets died so Cuba could become and remain socialist! USSR is gone now how is the struggle doing huh! huh!! Fidel knew better!!
