Not sure I'd trust an officer who keeps on rear-ending people. 😅 But at least he did the right thing afterwards, as did his Sargent. Overall, I think I'd agree with everything AtA said in this video. But it's scary that we have gotten to the stage where we don't really expect our police officers to do the job they are paid to do.
I'd say an episode where they take accountability is rare, but it actually happening is not. Bad news will always seen more than good news. Responsible police like this aren't rare just shown less. There are too many cops who don't take responsibility though. Which is why it's important to keep them accountable, but at the same time realize that most cops have good intentions!

@darthgorthaur258 yeah, the license, understandable. Asking if he was wearing a seat belt? Why? Did a seat belt cause the accident, or did your officer? 🤔

I'd definitely describe them as "pro civil liberties" but it's videos like these which show being pro civil liberties doesn't mean being anti-police. I enjoy how their analysis consistently feels fair and objective no matter which side is acting good or bad in encounter.
The fact that I can't believe the cop was cordial in this interaction is an absolute indictment of the state of our law enforcement system.... I was actually shocked by how nice he was.
You're right i was expecting him to be an asshole and SUPRISED he wasn't. Although i knew someone who was hit by an officer about 25 years ago. He was very honest kind and professional about it. She got a new car.
only reason you expect cops to be a dickhead is because you influence yourself by watching cops who are a holes the media love to spread the worst cases when thats not the majority of interactions
It really is not an indictment of the state of law enforcement, it is really an indictment of what is seen as click worthy by UA-camrs and the media, this kind of interaction could be shown hundreds of times a day, but most would not consider it newsworthy. It's kind of like, "dog bites man" Not a story, it's too common, now change the story to "Man Bites Dog" Now that is a front page story. That particular example is kind of like day one of any Journalism class.
Look how low the bar is set for cops. The cop basically has the exact same accident twice, showing he learned nothing the first time, and is continuing his dangerous behavior, and yet people are saying things like "I can't criticize him", "what an incredible officer" just because he acknowledged his mistake... like ANY halfway descent person would, or like my 10 year old does. Next time he's going to run someone over...
He was looking at his computer and not the road. THIS is like texting and driving to the extreme. The cop deserves an F. If you like positive interactions look up "officer pulls over man with gun on his chest" and "officer detains retired army sergeant" from ATA. Those are good
@@CherryZ My favorite one is when an auditor is looking at police vehicles, just recording and minding his own business, and a pair of officers come out and treat him wonderfully, offer to take pictures of him with the vehicle, and are very welcoming in the gentleman's visit to their town. Wtf this has to be the most humbling police interaction episode I’ve ever seen. Everybody was extremely polite and civil during this encounter. If all police interactions were like this the world would be in a better place.
This is how most encounters go. There are a million encounters a day and people on UA-cam mainly only focus on the few bad encounters that make up a very small percentage of police encounters.
@@UnkleRuckusNoRelation that's because, just like in retail or dining experiences, people only really report the bad situations and the good, unless over the top good, are not mentioned. How often have you had someone tell you about how great a shopping experience they had someplace compared to how many times they have complained about bad service... it is human nature unfortunately.
What on earth is respectful about letting a criminal go? There’s no law that says you have to stop for geese, I hit animals all the time when driving. That cop should have given that Jeep idiot at least a ticket.
Commending good behavior is just as important as calling out bad behavior. I am often pleasantly surprised at how consistent this channel is when it comes to being fair and impartial when choosing which stories to review and in how it assigns grades.
Agreed I’ve grown to dislike 1st amendment auditors due to clear anti police biases and the general way they go about their interactions with police mainly how outlandish they act in an effort to make cops make a mistake. This channel is the only channel like this that I feel actually audits properly.
Anyone who knows this officer. Buy him a beer. When he's off duty. I'd buy him one for being the man his mother raised him to be. Honest and a true public servant. May God keep him safe as he keeps his community safe.
Buy him a better computer stand so it can't be open when he's driving the way it should be. Cops are the ones who drive distracted the most. Talking responsibility is great but they still have computer screens they watch while they drive
As emabrrasing as this may be for the officer, sir, take heart in knowing it draws attention to a positive and honest interaction and you deserve credit for remaining honest.
I saw this going a *completely* different way. I thought the Sergeant was going to try to flip blame onto the victim. Nice to see two peace officers actually remembering that they are here to protect and serve and they actually accepted accountability
The cop admitted to using his laptop (MDT) while driving behind this guy. WOW! Great job, officer. That shows integrity and should be commended even though it should be expected because it’s not the norm with most cops nowadays. Again, good job on his part. It’s appreciated. Helps to grow trust and is somewhat it an olive branch to the community, as far as I see it.
I'm actually confused about their use being prohibited while driving. Obviously it's a terrible idea - but I thought they ran license plates all day long on the road looking for outstanding warrants. Not true?
AtA needs to do a video on the Seattle cop that ran over (killed) a pedestrian in a crosswalk at 70+ mph in a 25 mph speed zone. Hit and killed 23-year-old Jaahnavi Kandula.
Well he has multiple cameras in the vehicle and a body cam. So it would be stupid not to be honest when the truth will be shown regardless. He did this twice on the same roadway within a years time. What's next...running a little kid over crossing the street? He's learned if something happens he just pays a small fine and get off.
This video was a breath of fresh air. There have been so many videos of corrupt police officers doing shady stuff and putting the blame on innocent civilians when things don't go their way. This helped soften my contempt towards police interactions and gives me hope that there are still good, honest police officers out there that are able to check their ego and perform the actions of a peacekeeper that we all expect.
Everyone in this case acted like a responsible adult. I love it. They treated each other with respect and their supervisor is an exemplary sample of good officer conduct. It's too bad that everyone doesn't display this type of behavior.
Finally. A real police officer. That’s rare. Everyone makes mistakes. He should definitely be more careful though. What I’ve learned from others is once you are familiar with a process you can get careless. That also happens with driving. Now if only prosecutors and most other police realized everyone is human and we all can make mistakes. Instead of categorizing everyone and assuming the worst. I hope he stays safe driving. I’m glad he didn’t get fired. It’s difficult to find an actual police officer anymore instead of a badged gang member.
@@aj6365I’m not an officer but I would assume it’s because they have to use their vehicle to chase/stop people, and if your vehicle slams the breaks when you get close that’s not possible. I know most safety systems can just be turned off and they could in theory do that during a chase, but when you’re adrenalines pumping and you’re focused on the chase plus every other thing they have to do during that like communicate with dispatch, other officers, and try to not hurt bystanders, it’s going to be way too easy to forget to turn off the safety system until you go to use the vehicle how you need to and instead it slams the breaks and stops you.
But then they wouldn't be able to fill the prisons with almost-free labor. (Wildland firefighters, farm workers, factories) prosecutors WANT us behind bars. Its not about them being evil. The entire system is evil. Its literally all about free labor for corporations who hae contracts with DOC and fed
It is so refreshing to find an officer, especially one who made a boo-boo … AND HIS SUPERVISOR to be completely trustworthy, honest, and respectful. It just doesn’t get any better than that … and on top of it all … the caring civilian saved momma goose and her babies❤👍🏼
While I know you don't always have time to critique and entire video, most of what you post is with in context, and I appreciate the hard work you do and both showing the video, and the applicable laws. Thank you for the work and editing that you do.
This was actually a fairly wholesome encounter. Good on you guys for showing good interactions rather than always focusing on the negative ones. Well done!
It's not that ATA usually focuses on negative police encounters. It's that most police encounters tend to be negative unfortunately due to the officer. There have been plenty of good or justified encounters on account of the officers on this channel as well.
The worst thing about this video is the title. It seems youtubers tend to choose clickbait titles based on an expectation of how well their video should perform, regardless of content, and then do whatever is necessary to excite the algorithm so that the expectation is met.
@@RadeUeMasq Oh no, I wasn't accusing them of being overly negative by any means. I'm personally not a big fan of the police, but I am studying law, so I watch this channel mostly because they delve into case law. I cannot count how many misconceptions have been cleared up by ATA. The American legal code is a MESS, so someone doing a deep dive into case law and precedent is extremely useful for me.
A pleasant surprise. An interaction with the police that was polite with no snarky comments by an officer or attempts to misplace the fault of the accident. Seriously this is nice to see. Props to everyone involved for acting so reasonable and respectful.
I appreciate you covering this unusual encounter in such a respectful and insightful way. I agree with you 100%, no one is perfect and accidents happen, so owning up to it and being honest is as good as you can do in that situation.
Minus his ability to keep his eyes on the road, at heart he seems like a pretty good guy and officer. Whether he stays as such as he goes through life is uncertain, the fact ge owned up to everything including his use of the MDT that no one could see or prove was awesome and gives me hope he will grow in his profession as an amazing person. I don't say that often about officers but his honesty says a lot about him.
It’s actually nice to have a more relaxed scenario for a change, no lawsuits, no major accidents, just a minor one with nobody angry at each other or hurt.
I mean He was charged and pled guilty to the charge of driving while distracted by an electronic device. This is what we would expect to happen to any other citizen. His job does require some level of use of device while on duty so maybe some training and if the issues happen more than the 2 times he could be taken off patrol and moved to another role in the dept.
I distrust law enforcement deeply... but officer waters deserves an A plus. What an incredible officer. If we were policed by people like him we would have an amazing country.
You want to give an officer an A+ for driving distracted not only once, but twice on the same roadway. He clearly didn't learn a thing from the first incident, and went right back staring at his phone/laptop. God forbid he drives over a little kid crossing the road next time he decides him laptop is more important than driving Oh my bad, I'll just pay the ticket again right Sarg. Honesty is great, but that doesn't mean you automatically get an A+. Learn from your own idiocy and then you can consider and A+.
Does this EXACT comment have to be left over and over on every single video where a cop acts decently? Nobody else gets this kind of praise for exhibiting basic maturity and integrity lol.
Why......so we, as taxpayers, can constantly pay to fix their cruisers? Well......maybe that would be cheaper than the lawsuits.....you could be on to something.
Wow! I kept waiting for the cop to figure out how to make this the American citizen's fault and get cuffs on him, because that's what MOST of the cops in America would have probably done. I'm absolutely flabbergasted that this cop ACTUALLY TOLD THE TRUTH about being distracted by his laptop. This is absolutely AMAZING. I feel like I'm dreaming.
Believe it or not, there's plenty of great cops out there and it sucks that the bad ones take the spot light off the good one's and I agree with you, this was refreshing to see
There are lots of great cops. As somebody that views it from the outside, you have to remember that the majority of cases shared even amoung our media is always the bad things. Negativity sells, positivity doesn't, so all media shows the bad side of cops and none of the good. That's one of the biggest issues with media these days. I commend AtA for not only showing us the bad interactions with police, but the bad interactions with civilians, as well as good interactions when they can find them. It's easy to use the same strategy as the media for clicks. So to see a good interaction, is one of the many reasons I continue to watch to this day.
@@Lanny-io9bi Officer Waters probably does need to learn his lesson when it comes to distracted driving, since it seems he's developed a habit of doing that. But aside from that, I really can't fault the actions of anyone involved in this interaction. Which is a surprise, because this was certainly a situation where the initial incident could have been blown out of all proportion by either party.
@@rodh1404 I absolutely agree with you that he needs to learn a lesson and pay attention to his surroundings or if there's a next time it could be a tragedy

Happened on a busy road in a city I used to reside. Traffic slowed to a stop. I couldn't tell why. Then I saw a momma, with 6 babies following. Someone eventually came to reolcate them to a safer place with water.
I would have been way more pissed off as the "first" driver. The dude that got hit was super chill and reacted more calmly than I would have. And the officer was pretty good too. Crazy to hear he actually got a ticket and not just got it swept under the rug.
This was a wonderful change of pace to hear and I would actually enjoy more interactions like this. I would call this an absolute A+ example of making the best of a worse situation. And I'm willing to bet that if this was any other officer involved in the accident, it would have likely turned out much worse.
I really enjoyed this episode as it took a step back from the usual content with generally more aggressive encounters and we get to learn of laws that aren’t reviewed so much on this channel. Great video ATA.
These types of episodes are refreshing … actually owning a mistake and not putting it on someone else and the reporting officer not trying to cover it up …
Thank you for including positive interactions on your audit channel. It isn't the first time and hopefully there will be more to come. With the plethora of negative police interactions across the country and beyond, it becomes incredibly heartbreaking and daunting, as one feels unsafe and apprehensive when faced with needing the assistance of or having to deal with the police, even for seemingly simple and mundane interactions. I was just talking yesterday about how distressing it was to see, hear, and feel our country progress negatively instead of positively. I shared my feelings as a child, learning of the past transgressions of and in our country and how I wondered and hoped for what the future would look like as we continued to work towards a brighter and better future for everyone, only to be met with the reality of today and the depression and stress that it has caused. As long as you continue to provide quality, educational content, I will continue to support your channel, with the hopes that the information you provide continues to spread. It is my hope that the work done by people like yourself incites changes, for the better. Thank you again.
This was a nice change of pace. It would be good to pepper in some more videos like this every once in a while. Dont stop the good fight but remind everyone that these are still people.

It’s a sign of the times that I was bracing myself for the worst and kept expecting something to go south in this incident. Most officers featured on this channel would start fishing for a way to pass the blame (I.e. have you been drinking?) Kudos to the officers for handing it with humility and professionalism. Amazing how smoothly things can go when everyone keeps a level head, and that goes for both sides.
@@DVeck89 yeah I picked up on that, which was for sure my first “ruh-roh” moment. But then he moved on and didn’t start asking questions like “well how hard did he brake?” I felt like all the “shared responsibility” talk on ATA’s part teed up things to go that direction.
@@DVeck89 I think he was asking because that's a standard question during a car accident. If he wasn't wearing a seatbelt, there's a higher chance that he needs to be checked medically, even if the accident was small.

I'm very impressed that they cited the officer! I'm also glad you presented a video where the PD did the right thing. How many accidents does this officer need to be involved in, before they take away his keys? Our taxes don't need to keep having to repair police vehicles when reckless officers drive them. I like that you showed what good PDs are like!
"I was so ready to be outraged!" Well said. I didn't realize that I felt the same until I read your comment but these videos have conditioned us to go into a situation with a negative expectation. That expectation surely has the unintended consequence of causing more interactions to go badly.
major props to officer waters. seems like a truly honest fellow. he definitely needs to take steps to be a better driver, but hes an honest man with a sense of humor. hope he is doing well.
Three thoroughly decent human beings who exemplify how normal people should interact day to day. I understand why you gave the officer a B , however looking at the situation in another way he was absolutely what everyone should expect from a law enforcement officer. If I ever get stopped by police my hope is that it’s someone like that young man. We all cock up on a regular basis but it takes a real man to hold his hand up and take responsibility. 👏👏👏👏 Well done young man!
Very nice gentlemen! This is how adulting is done. Mutual respect for one and another, mistakes were made, accountability happened, no one was hurt. This is exactly how it should work.
This is a perfect example of why departments should have two officers per car. As a retired firefighter I have a lot of experience with MDTs. Two officers per car would make everyone safer by splitting the workload and allowing the driver to focus on driving as well as having a backup officer always present. Bust for some reason they just keep sending them out alone all while increasing their workload.
It's also becoming a profession that no one wants anymore so 2 officers per car would probably be difficult to do. If police officers stopped viewing the public as enemy #1 and had an "Us V. Them" mentality people wouldn't distrust and outright hate police officers so much. Teaching the police citizen rights in the academy like the U.S. Constitution and The Bill of Rights would also be a great way to start, "Protect and Serve" should be taken seriously and not just be a suggestion.
@@AcousticGStringpeople like you are literally creating a “Us vs them” mentality. Imagine trying to enforce the law when everyone hates you for simply trying to do your job. So many people take officers for granted.
@@Itssblu So you consider arresting someone for filming in public, obstructing for standing on a public sidewalk and failure to ID as an initial charge as enforcing the law? You're watching a channel that highlights police consistent misconduct and perpetual instances of violating citizens civil rights and the protections afforded by the U.S. Constitution regularly yet you make a baseless comment. Also, considering all of the evidence shown by dozens of auditor's and actual civil rights attorneys that highlight continuous police misconduct to the public it's more than evident that there is a very large divide between the people of the United States and law enforcement and I am most certainly not the sole reason or in any way a contributing factor to it by pointing out what is in front of everyone's eyes.
@@chcarroll5164 Well, speaking of your cynical attitude, I know I would have made the situation worse, unlike this calm smart man. Kudos to this driver. He also was perfect.

These are the type officers I love to see. Sure, an accident isn't good at all, but it was amazing seeing someone, let alone an LEO, take account of their actions.
If i was to give him a grade starting immediately AFTER the accident, i would give him an A+. He was completely honest through and through, he showed actual care for the other party, he didnt try to conceal the accident, he took accountability immediately, he didnt try to downplay any apparent injury to the other man, and he did the right thing and paid his fine. I suppose i would give the other man no grade, but that's primarily because there is not much to do here on his part except for exchange the required information. However, if i did give him a grade it would also be an A+. Staying calm helped keep the situation low and steady.
I love your videos. 🥰 I've often seen you called out by the crazies in our community due to your attention to the reality of the law. I appreciate both his and the sergeants service.

You cannot give him just the B. You can only judge his behaviour after the incident that caused the interaction, and not in a completely different situation either. This dude deserves an A, let him have it.
Are you suggesting the officer LIED about how he caused the accident? The grade was based on what he himself reported doing! Exactly the same for the 2nd accident - same road, same charge, same guilty plea, exact same monetary penalty. He was judged only by his own honest accounting.

The fact that I can't believe the cop was cordial in this interaction is an absolute indictment of the state of our law enforcement system.... I was actually shocked by how nice he was.

He's too friendly and not meeting his oppression quota, bad police officer. Great person though, I bet he's great company
@beepbop6697 there was another officer that killed a girls uncle and received no time at all.

I commend AtA for not only showing us the bad interactions with police, but the bad interactions with civilians, as well as good interactions when they can find them. It’s refreshing to see an encounter like this. This should be the norm. Well done to this department.

As always, a superbly presented and objectively narrated video from Audit the Audit.
This was a welcomed change from the usual videos on this channel. As much as I learn from the good and bad behavior of both sides on this channel seeing this one quite nice.
