Puerto Rican Stuffed Sweet Plantains aka Canoes || Canoas de Plátanos Maduros Boricua || SO CHEESY

- Puerto Rican stuffed sweet plantains is a classic Puerto Rican dish that will blow your socks off. If you’re a sucker for sweet and salty dishes then this recipe is going to be your new jam! The beef picadillo I used to stuff the plantains is seasoned to PERFECTION and is infinitely versatile. It can be made with ground turkey, chicken, pork, heck even lentils if ur a vegetarian. You can stuff it in the sweet plantains here like I did, but you can all use it to stuff tostones cups, empanadas, pastelon, fried mashed potato balls, the options are endless. It’s so good it can absolutely be eaten all by itself or on top of a mound of fluffy white rice.
The cheese in this recipe is optional but definitely recommended. I hope this recipe can become a regular in your household. Don’t forget the Malta India!

Ingredients & instructions
4 maduros (sweet plantain)
Puerto Rican white cheese ( if you can’t find this any cheese your prefer will work)
Mozzarella melting cheese
Beef Picadillo:
1 pound ground beef
7-10 ají dulce (can be found at your local Hispanic supermarket, optional)
7 culantro leaves (can be found at your local Hispanic supermarket, if not use more cilantro )
1/2 bunch of cilantro
1 red pepper diced
1 green pepper diced
1 medium onion Diced
Adobo
Onion powder
Garlic powder
1 dash Grace browning sauce
Pitted Olives + olive juice (to taste)
Juice of half a lime
PREHEAT OVEM TO 375F
1. Peel the sweet plantains and fry them in oil on medium high heat for about 12-15 minutes or until cooked through and tender
2. In a separate pan, sautée the onions and peppers on medium high heat
3. Add the ground beef, seasonings, herbs and browning sauce. Cook until browned.
4. Finish ground beef with olives and lime juice.
5. Make sure the cooked sweet plantains are cool enough to handle. With a knife make a vertical cut in the sweet plantain but be sure not to cut it entirely in half.
6. Spread the sweet plantain open like a canoe.
7. Stuff with cheese and ground beef.
8. Bake for 12-15 minutes at 375 or until cheese is golden brown.
ENJOY!

Went to Puerto Rico, San Juan and stopped at a shop on the side of the highway and got these. It was delicious!
So delicious right! Love sweet and salty together
The one thing about us puerto ricans and this is important for those doing our dishes is we do not measure things, cooking is within our souls, a little means about a tsb or half a tsp. When you make our food pay attention to what un poquito means (a little) Means, and assume in your memory if you saw a spoon or less. Because since we start cooking at 7 yrs of age, we never measure, it's in our blood, we sprinkle and add.
Yes u hit the nail right on the head, i love your comment! Thank you so much for watching and taking the time out to comment ❤️

Thank you Erica! I haven't had canoes since I left Brooklyn decades ago!
Now that I know how to make it, I WILL!
I was wondering if you ever make "pastelles"? I may be spelling it wrong but it sounds like "pah tell ay".
It's a seasoned meat mixture inside a plantain batter and wrapped up in banana leaves and tied like a little square package and then boiled.
When it's done, it looks like a kinish made out of gelatine.😅 You know what I'm talking about?
I know it's a lot of work, we only got it at Easter and Christmas cause it was so much work you had to make a lot of it!
Well, I'll keep watching your channel for it!
Thanks again for this one though!
✌️

Piñón, chica! Thanks for the recipe. I'll probably use less cheese. 🤣
Lol i tried to film a piñón video a few months, it was a disaster i made 4 different trips to 4 different stores(i went back home to film between each trip) and all of the plátano maduros, even the blackest of the black ones weren’t ripe enough when i would open them up and fry them! It was wild i couldn’t believe it, it wasn’t meant for me to film that recipe that day lol! I will try again soon!
Your voice is so smooth.
Thank you! Ironically i hate how i sound when i record 😂 but thank you 🤗 ❤️

Omg that actually sounds delicious! Thank you so much for watching and your sweet comment ❤️ let me know how ur dish turns out, u might be on to something even better than mine, I’m thinking if u add a creamy sauce element it would be even more spectacular with the steak. U got this ❤️ 😃
@@erica_thecreator aww ty and ya I made a sauce with sofrito, garlic, Adobo and tomato sauce and it was soooooo good. Its actually in the oven now so I'm rdy lol I can't wait to try it and ill definitely try it your way too very soon 😊
I hope you have a restaurant or something cause the food you make looks good
Thank you stay tuned!! 👀
Great recipe. Thank you . What is frying time per side so the plantains cook inside. Have you baked the plantain vs frying? Blessings.
If you slice the Madura you take a small spoon from the opening and press to the end of it you get a wider space to be able to fill them up easier. Just a suggestion
Thanks for the tip! 😊
It must be super good 😊
Thank you! It’s really east to make and tastes sooo yummy!
@@erica_thecreator I'm going to try
Just stumbled upon this video girl my mouth is watering I'm trynna learn more and cook more traditional puerto rican meals so def subscribing
Hi and welcome! I’m so happy you joined ❤️ i got you girl, i have a bunch of new videos on the way 😃
Damn they look hella good. I'm definitely making these 💪🏽💯💙
Thank you! Please let me know how they turn out 😃 💜
I need some beans with this masterpiece 🥰🥰😍
Right! I do have a beans video, be sure to check that out 😊
If i can’t find the puertorican cheese what do you suggest I use instead. How does this cheese taste? Thank you they look delicious!
Hi Margarita! That’s a really great question! So the Puerto Rican cheese is a pretty neutral tasting cheese, meaning it’s not really funky but it does have a bit of a slightly salty quality to it. I honestly think any cheese you love would be just fine. Thank you so much for watching, please let me know how they turn out, i hope you love them! 😃
Yessss! This looks delish! I have to try it. Make pastelon next and I’ll share my arepa recipe with you. 😉
Thank you! I have something special coming up also sweet plantain, cheese, and meat related bwahahahahahaha
