- I'm always trying new experiments and today I decided I wanted to see how low I can mow my perennial ryegrass so there's a few steps that will be needed to get there. Aeration, breaking up the cores for topdressing, applying Lawn Supply Company VigORR and overseeding my elite perennial ryegrass were all part of the fun...as well as a final topdressing with mason sand.

First time home owner my grass keeps dying during summer time even water regularly and fertilize regularly. What products do I need to keep my lawn from go dormant in the summer?.
Ben Sims would be proud of your sand flicking techniques
Played a lot of hockey which helps 😂
The slow motion of that aerator made it look like it was prancing, lol.
It reminded me of the Boston Dynamic robot dogs.
I love how my man has all this YT/Lawn Supply money and he's still using a Greenworks dethatcher lol, always stayed true to his roots, Ryan KnORR is a real one 👍👍.
I’d love to see you adv more of your products. I’ve always liked what you sell. I’m trying to get away from Allyn’s stuff. I almost ruined my lawn, using some of his products. And I’ve had a lot of success with yours. So pls, push them. Let us know and get familiar w/ them. Love the house and yard!!
You break it so we don't have to! Excited to see how this turns out.
what a great channel, i learn something all the time.
love your 18-18-18 from lawn supply
Definitely the one I use the most!
That's gonna be a small target to hit from 100 yards out but so is the well.... your golf skills will be on point by this fall.
The rye God is back at it!
Can’t afford a big boy mower. I love using the push. Thanks for the education. We have a few weeks more in Alberta to start my lawn.
Omg does this mean the pod will start back up soon!? I've been waaiiiting for an rk rd ep. Your voices are my favorite thing.
good point maintaining coarse over fines
I’ve been running that cheap Amazon orange pack sprayer since the day you highlighted it. I won’t lie, it’s my favorite pack sprayer now!
Works fine for me!
@@ryanknorrlawncareGreetings as the owner of my first house two years ago. My lawn is deteriorating, it is a sod lawn that they installed and now it has many patches and holes. I am about to level it and replant what type of seed do you recommend, I live in the Virginia area.
Thanks for allowing me to annoy my neighbours. Great job.
Good morning!
Morning!
We back
I'm really looking forward to the final outcome of the really short Rye! I didn't see any flags out there in the yard for the golf holes?
Any tips on preventing creeping bent or permanently removing it? Tenacity, bare earth, reseeding, and it still comes back
Lots of work already! I hope Ernie is still doing OK...❤
Whoa! I have not seen the orange swardman in a while :)
Must have missed the past few videos haha
I've been using the Simple Lawn Solutions - Ryan Knorr - Gallon Bundle- Lawn Essentials Bundle Box for some time now. I would love to see a segment or even more advertising of your products. I know I could just visit your website and read about them, but the actual visual of them in action in different scenarios is invaluable....Just my opinion. Keep up the great work Ryan. 👍
Yeah I usually get a lot of grief for that so it's been limited as far as showing stuff
@@ryanknorrlawncare Understood.
@@primofixit I'll see what I can do. I appreciate the support!
When seeding, is it okay to use the grass clippings from where I scalped and dethatched as a covering to hold the seed and keep the water down?
Or do I need peat moss and a spreader?
Great stuff. Any plans to use PGR on this? Cheers
Yep i will have to at this height
I live in Iowa and have normal Iowa grass, do you have a video for leveling my type of grass? Thanks
Is your product available in Canada?
What did you use to break up the cores? Scarifying tines or something lighter?
That green works I have only had one kind of tine. It's just the stock spring loaded ones
Were you able to switch to the Tee-jet nozzle?
I'm using a different wand from a Milwaukee sprayer that fits on here so it allowed me to use my teejet stuff that way
Hello!
Please help!
After applying sand top dressing (half m3 /100m2) and smoothing it with a leveling rake, I noticed that no matter how I try to level the area, there remain tender, thin and weak horizontally lying blades of grass under the sand. Should I worry about them, or will they come out after a few days? They emerge as a result of a water jet (or water sprayed from half a meter away), but this slightly erodes the effect of leveling because it re-excavates the area filled with sand between the larger clumps of old grass, and can also displace upturned seeds and fertilizer particles. So far, I have applied only half of the planned amount of top dressing, I don't dare to spread more, I would like to wait until the grass grows a little (I cut it into short pieces before aerating the lawn). At the same time, I don't think I can wait too long, because I sowed fast-germinating seeds, and once the new grass comes, it shouldn't be necessary to loosen the soil. What do you advise?
I’ve never leveled my lawn, and it is pretty bumpy. Would I notice a big difference after one leveling?
if you reel mow
What's ur recommendation for top dressing or leveling with a TTTF lawn I know I cant cut very low maybe 2 inches at most I assume but I have some heavy dips .....thanx
Not very easy to do on taller stuff unless you were willing to bury some of those lower spots and reseed or do it in stages so the existing grass doesn't get smothered
@@ryanknorrlawncare thank u very much for ur response I know ur a busy man ...I'll just reseed those spots
🌱👍
Just getting into leveling. Is there an issue with mixing sand with heavy clay soil? What's your recommendation? I read sand mixed in with heavy clay soil can cause concrete like conditions.
Mixing as in tilling it together, yes. I wouldn't do that with heavy clay. Sand capping where the sand stays on top is a different method
What are you using to break the cores?
Dethatcher
Hello Ryan Hope your 1st summer at the new house goes well! And thanks for all your videos! Quick question. I usually use Humic12, RGS, SeaK and Air8 but the world is so expensive I have to cut back a bit. Of those 4 I mentioned .... which 2 would you recommend? Thanks again!
I have never used any of those personally so I'm not really sure
Is play sand okay to use as a top dressing?
Not the best choice. It's too fine
I tried a spring overseeding but my maple decided to drop its helicopters 3 days later lol. Not sure what I can do now without just starting over.
Also we are happy to have Caitlin Clark here in Indianapolis !!!
They shouldn't grow fast enough that you won't be mowing them off soon
Why can’t you use dirt on top of sand? What if you put sand down and then do a full renovation in the future. Are you going to have issues getting seed to root in a top layer of sand?
You can't do renovation in the future with topsoil. Layering issues
Just curious as to why you shouldn’t put dirt back over the sand? I get that you said it will break down, but once it’s leveled with sand i don’t see why it would hurt
Layering...sand capping is a specific process that has been studied for a while now and the coarse material needs to stay on top for it to work properly
@@ryanknorrlawncare awesome, thanks
What about adding compost?
@@ryanlloyd4395 no compost on top either. That will just add organic matter to the top as it breaks down
Ryan, do you mean once you go sand, you can never (ever) top dress with soil? I’d like to improve drainage to fight my poa triv…
You don't want to cause layering so yes the coarse sand needs to stay as the top layer
Can I understand why it need to stay as top layer?
Are you referring to top layer in the leveling process? Say next season if you were to level again. You can again only use sand?
Surprised you don’t have a bent grass plot yet for this super low type mowing

How about this rain, Ryan? 🌧
Better than nothing but the heavier bands have missed me so far
wimbledon is rye and mows their rye at 8mm so I would assume you could too!!!
The goal would be .2 or so but yeah I'll just be interested to see what texture ends up like
If I were to add a thick layer of sand to my yard , then till it into my existing soil (northern MN clay), help accomplish better drainage and leveling ability? I am going to tear up my lawn with a construction project, so i feel that now is my best chance to make changes.
BTW, just got my 25lb. Bag of your elite rye grass seed. I am excited to try it out.
No I don't think that would be a good mix to try to blend together. Depending on the soil properties you could get into trouble with them becoming hard as a rock once it sticks together and dries. Sand capping is safer because it keeps the sand layer on top and utilizes that for better control on watering, fertilizer etc
@@ryanknorrlawncare that was my biggest worry. I think I'll just incorporate some new top soil when I till it all up and grade it then. If need be in the following years, I'll cap it for more leveling. Thanks for the response, love the content.
I’m confused. I didn’t think mason sand had any nutritional value 🤔
be honest, you're actually testing a Rye grass putting green
Thank you for posting, Ryan. Love this video! Something is happening to my lawn that you have never posted about. Your viewers might learn something from it. I’d like to share it with you. How can I do that? Thank you, Ryan
I’m a bit bummed my delivery has been delayed day after day. Out of your control I’m sure but a better real estimation would have worked. I had other rye to put down. I love your seed. And delayed again.
I feel like I would put a whole bunch of seed down somewhere in that process if not all over lol
