I have been doing this on a low area for a good while but needed this reminder to not worry about how it looks and just do it. Thanks so much for this.
this was extremely helpful, thank you! I have always bailed on leveling projects because I fear "smothering" the grass, and I never put down enough sand. Seeing you do this with confidence that the grass will grow through the sand is all I need to do it right this time. Thanks again!
My neighbor practically buries his st Augustine with sand in the spring if we got severe freezes over the winter. I thought the same thing but he waits it out and it always ends up looking amazing. I have trees so mine doesn't usually freeze. Sort of insulates it.
NOT THE MOLE!!!!!! That was my battle the 1st season!!! Allyn I used (Victor 0631 Out O'Sight Reusable Humane Mole Eliminator Trap and Killer ) Got him the 1st try with this trap! (added a little grass and soil to the top of the trap so the mole thinks it's still underground hiding the light) Good luck brother I hope you get him! Also lawn looks epic can't believe its already been 3 weeks since you scalped! 😊🔥🙏🏾🤙🏾
Did a small leveling 2 seasons ago same exact way as this using my broom as well. I will add also if anyone wants to spice it up a bit and help your lawn at same time. Do a 70/30 or 80/20 mixture of Sand and whatever favorite soil with humic acid in it. I personally like Fox Farm Happy Frog soil but any should help as long as humic acid is present.
I live in Oklahoma and have a brand new lawn that was installed in December then temps fell to -13 with sustained winds making it colder and my lawn looks like crap. There’s whole lines of rolled out sod that is dead. They didn’t put down any topsoil so it’s laid out right on red clay. I put down urea and then it rained really good the same day. I don’t have an auto sprinkler system … so with all that said.. watching your channel will give me a nice lawn in a few weeks. .. I hope. ☺️ ..and it’s Bermuda grass with a lot of weeds and I can’t use weed killer on it because that will kill it… thanks for all the information which I am putting into motion already.
I have two acres and have been working to get rid of my low spots over the years. I take pictures after heavy rains of where the water collects. I've probably moved/added about 25 yards of dirt to get rid of most of the low spots. The minimum amount of dirt for delivery is 5 yards. For basic ruts and such I use some bagged top soil.
SAME! This last fall into winter I have one, or more, that have torn my yard up! I applied grub ex and Merit to prevent them last year and you’d thought I added food for them?? What did you do to get rid of them? Thank you in advance
@@gerryhenning7337 Unfortunately, after trying just about everything under the sun to get rid of it, I used Tomcat mole killer. My entire lawn needed to be leveled. It was a disaster.
Allyn, you obviously did this sand leveling at your Florida home which typically has a sandy soil so adding more sand to that soil is very much the same material. For LCNs like me who live farther north of you and have a clay soil is sand alone your recommendation for leveling or would you suggest a sand and top soil mixture or something else for this soil type? If you suggest a mixture, what percentage would you use (i.e., 50/50)?
I am late to comment here but I always apply liquid fertilizer then level after 48 hours. It gives the grass the energy needed to push through the sand and minimizes the possibility of damage when you make a mistake and pile it on too thick. I spoon feed so for bad areas, I can get some leveling in once a week. Once the lawn is where I need, I continue my spoon feeding but begin using PGR once a month
Nice video, great content overall, but I had to comment on this since you did like a whole segment on it. Sand does not seek it's own level ( I feel like that was going to give people some very misguided ideas) and that is not why we use it as a medium for leveling your lawn. The reason is actually pretty simple, since sand is almost entirely inorganic, the sand you lay down today will more or less be the same 10 years from now since none if it will decompose or compact significantly. If you have something like potting soil or garden soil that has organic matter in it (like compost) you may see more settling over time as the organic parts break down or get consumed, or just compact further over time. Your lawn looks great by the way, I'm sure you are the envy of your neighborhood :)
this was very helpful for a rookie--thanks! and your vids are stylish, too...fun to watch! Q: If I had to level my lawn and also aerate it, what's the ideal sequence for those two steps?
Low spots are easy. What about the small lumps say from a skunk that grass grew over. Tempted to take a rubber mallet to them. But no one talks about small bumps it seems. :(
Sand is a great idea and better than dirt since it doesn't compact hardly at all. I bought dirt once and the guy had mixed 40% horse manure into it and it compacted but did not smell. Felt cheated cuz all I wanted was to level a whole section
I live in west Texas. I have clay soil and celebration bermuda grass. I need to level my yard. I was told NOT to use sand as it mixes with the clay and gets even harder. Is that true ? What do you recommend I level with. Thank you GSM
Thanks for the great videos. I was taught sand is the worst leveler in Texas due to the.clay contrnt. Also, why air8 and not dove dishwashing liquid? Thank you!
Deal with the mole first, levelling is just gonna get ruined. Also, very much looking forward to your mole removal video, need to learn how to get rid of those bastards once and for all!
Similar to a mole, there was a great documentary made in the 80s about gopher problems on a golf course. They had a lot of good ideas for solving the issue. It's called Caddeyshack. Might be worth a look.
Question…I’m about to level my lawn..after I had a tree removed and stump grinded out…plus I have a few holes my dog made..so for those spots..fill the hole with sand first..then topsoil then seed so grass can grow there?
I'm moving into a new house and the lawn is pretty patchy on with the grass and I was going to overseed the lawn to fill out the lawn. My dilemma is I have several low spots a couple that are 5-6 inches low. Should I fill those spots with soil and then finish with sand to level the spots and then throw seed on top of sand or should I fill spots with dirt and throw seed and wait for a good growth before I level with sand?
Do you suggest sand for all grass and climate types? Would there ever be a scenario where one should use soil or som kind of soil/sand combination? Or is it just 100% sand every time? I live in a cool climate and wasn’t sure if sand would still be the best option
Alan, I have an area that sunk down about 3 to 4 inches after a tree was removed a few years ago. would you recommend I still use sand for the 3-4” thanks
You're making excuses. All you had to do is shovel the snow of of the lawn, use your back to break up the frozen dirt, level the yard, and then put the snow back on the lawn.
A big birch tree was removed from my lawn 10 years ago. The lawn is grown back but there are big dips up to 8" deep over a 10 foot circle. What material is best to fill in these deeper areas and holes?
Allyn, I desperately need some advice. I’m getting ready to completely transform my girlfriends Bermuda lawn this spring/summer and just before the growing season begins, her careless daughter keeps parking half on the lawn and half on the driveway causing relatively noticeable tire marks/ruts and I’m just steaming and pulling my hair out. What should I do to correct this? I was thinking about getting a lawn roller to smooth out the bumps and then fill the soil depression with sand and level. Is this a good idea? What would you do? And when would be a good time?
if the soil is mostly sand, then once the summer rains come it will even out again. Once it starts growing and you are pushing it with fert, you can bring in sand to level it off and speed things up. Just don't completely bury the turf - do it in waves.
I have a big hole in corner of my yard. When they were paving my street one of the asphalt trucks drove over corner of my lawn and left a big depression there. Should I just fill it entirely with sand, then top dress with peat moss and seed or how should I fix this corner?
I have St Aug sod that was laid on river sand and its not growing. I have lots of spots that are 1' deep or more. Can I use Top Soil to level the lawn. Thanks.
My problem is that I have bad low spots, but my yard is sloped, and it's 50,000 sq. ft. Sand will just end up running down the slope and probably creating a bigger bump where it gathers at some high point on the slope. What do you recommend for leveling on a slope? I know that "level" and "slope" seem diametrically opposed, but I'd like my slopes to be smooth, and not feel like washboards, so there has to be a good way to smooth the slopes. I actually thought about renting a roller like they use to flatten blacktop.
I have a low spot that looks like it may need to be seeded. Do I do that first and then the sand or sand first. Also. Great video. I feel hopeful I will be able to get ride of low spot and water building up there.
So I like in Indiana and have no idea what kind of grass we have here but we have a lot of uneven spots some even look like holes so and there is actually no grass there anymore so my question is will the sand still fix this up and what do I do about the dead spots? Thanks again for the video.
So my yard was not done right they put Bermuda on top of clay. Could I do a sand soil mix? Not wanting to start over again (by ripping up the entire yard and backfilling with soil and lay new sod) Thanks y’all
Wet sand doesn't 'seek its own level,' that's the water doing work to level the sand in range of the waves. It's also wet because it's in range of the waves. The sand you spread on lawns probably levels itself due to gravity and rain.
What if you have a clay soil lawn? I've heard a lot about not using sand for leveling in that situation. If that's truly the case, do you have any alternatives in mind for leveling a clay soil lawn?
My lawn is so bad from the roots of my trees. Doing it like this for my situation seems convienant and not stress full compared to a full lawn leveling. Grab a bag or two each time I stop at Home Depot and thrower down!
I had a beautiful yard when I had kids and the neighborhood kids came over played on it daily. There gone now and the yard is starting to turn and the wildlife has taken over dont know what to do. Watching many different birds, fox, deer on a 1/2 acre in a City :)
What if I have a hole that’s about 6-8” deep, approx 12” diameter that my dog dug? Just fill it with sand, would that work? Then maybe top soil and seed?
If it's really bad, you may need to just rent a bobcat and scrape it up and re-grade. You could always try the sand method and if it doesn't correct the issue or seems like it willl take 5 years or more to work, then regrade and just mix in the sand you applied.
Great video! For St. Augustine grass, I was always informed that play sand has glass in it, which causes too much heat. Thus always use paver sand or leveling sand. Any truth to this? thoughts?
Top soil can contain weeds seeds, peat moss is cleaner but is light and airy and will bread down over time. Compost contains unknkown amounts of nitrogen and could leave you with dark green splotches. Sand is for leveling - all the rest of that stuff can be used to amend soil but that is a separate process and should be done over the whole lawn, not just in spots you are trying to level.
Question I have about seeding and fertilizing. I have Flagship Freedom Double dark Soil mastery I’m SE Pennsylvania and I want to over-seed, is there an issue with using any one of these products once the seed is in the ground? Do you recommend one over and other with new seed? Thanks, love your channel and products

Hello LCN, I'm thinking about replacing my Centipede with Zoysia in east coast NC. I've been studying your videos to give myself confidence. I thought I remember in one of your other videos, that if a person keeps it on mowing to keep it short that you are able to avoid the scalp. Is that only if your grass doesn't go dormant? Or, is it best to scalp every year before growing season?
excellent question! So yes, if you are able to keep the lawn mowed short all season (less than 2") you probably will not need to scalp in the spring. For me though, it always gets away from me in summer so I start mowing taller and taller. Then I need to scalp the following spring to give it a reset.
I had one dig a 20’ trench right next to the driveway. As in a perfectly straight line. No mounds, just neatly diverted soil. I had to laugh. What really blew my mind were the crawdad tunnels I found a couple weeks ago. I never knew they could tunnel up through grass and gravel like that.
I plan on overseeding this spring in Wisconsin and wondering if this leveling isn’t recommended before or after? Any thoughts on best time to level and when you shouldn’t level areas? Love the video
spring is the best time and you can seed on top after you level everything out. However, before seeding, read this thelawncarenut.com/blogs/news/spring-crabgrass-seed-your-lawn-in-the-fall
Could a fertilizer spreader be used to spread the sand like the larger machine or will it clog? I know you'll change bags often but it's a bit easier than spreading it by hand over and over. Curious. Thank you!
pre-emergent in the fall time so it reduces it the following year. For what you are dealing with now, anything with dicamba or 2-4d will kill it pretty easily.
Looks like u need some tips from Ben of the Lawn tips for sand spreading. Dude just flings the material off the shovel an boom its like nearly level and smooth
I added topsoil that had visible sand in the mix to some landscape beds last year. What I’ve noticed is it can appear to have a harder crust on top but in actuality the soil is very porous and drains well. I think the key is also adding organic material over time. For ex. I replanted that bed from previous owners and added compost, in addition to all the leaf break down it had seen prior.
Appreciate the easy approach to leveling. I’m gonna give it a shot with the broom and let the water to the rest. Thanks for sharing!

Hello. I'm from Canada. It's almost September. Do you think it's still ok to level or should I wait for next season? TIA!
Hi Alan. Will sand work in the northeast where soil/loam is what lawns are built on?
What about bar spots, will grass seeds grow through sand or top soils???
2:25 what about the sand clay mix? Like the 20% clay.
Does this method works if my lawn is on a small incline?
I always know when I have a mole because there are mounds, how were there no mounds in your yard?
I had one dig a 20’ trench right next to the driveway. As in a perfectly straight line. No mounds, just neatly diverted soil. I had to laugh. What really blew my mind were the crawdad tunnels I found a couple weeks ago. I never knew they could tunnel up through grass and gravel like that.
Great video..... Can I do this on TTTF in a Clay/Loam yard??
yes you sure can, spring is a great time.
I plan on overseeding this spring in Wisconsin and wondering if this leveling isn’t recommended before or after?
Any thoughts on best time to level and when you shouldn’t level areas?
Love the video
spring is the best time and you can seed on top after you level everything out. However, before seeding, read this thelawncarenut.com/blogs/news/spring-crabgrass-seed-your-lawn-in-the-fall
Will the grass (bluegrass) grow and spread in sand? I’ve always wanted to level but sand has me worried about cool season growth.
@@KelVarnsen9 it does just fine, grows right through it
4 more weeks till the season starts here in New York city
Good stuff.
what about leveling for east cost (MARVA)? I would assume top soil not sand?
Could a fertilizer spreader be used to spread the sand like the larger machine or will it clog? I know you'll change bags often but it's a bit easier than spreading it by hand over and over. Curious. Thank you!
Sand is too heavy for a regular spreader. You're looking for a "top dresser" like the machine shown here.
Thank you very much.@@cannonpalms4249
What's the best way to get rid of chickweed in NC cool season grass?
pre-emergent in the fall time so it reduces it the following year. For what you are dealing with now, anything with dicamba or 2-4d will kill it pretty easily.
Looks like u need some tips from Ben of the Lawn tips for sand spreading. Dude just flings the material off the shovel an boom its like nearly level and smooth
Sand finds its own level just like water.. FE!
can we use this same method for St Augustine? What about stoloms?
here is how I do it in St Augustine ua-cam.com/video/NleJWDAfZ3k/v-deo.html
Does sand work with clay soil? I heard it turns hard like concrete
Yes. Sand leveling clay is fine. Ask our southern Bermuda brethren. Just don’t till sand into clay - that could create problems.
Portland cement is needed to make concrete. Not clay or sand.
When do u level spring summer or fall .in GA
