These videos are great. I used to paint with watercolor until a teacher pointed out that I was using it like gouache, laying it down kinda thick and using the white on top. Now I’m a huge gouache fan and your videos are so helpful
Man, those velvetouch brushes are amazing and a total delight to use. They are also made to last. Their relatives, the heritage line, are cheaper but in exchange they lose their fine tip and you're left with a wider tip that takes a while to learn to use. Those oranges look delicious too.
This video is my introduction to you and your work and it is a true delight. Also, I greatly appreciate your advice about embracing paint texture as photos and videos have a tendency to give us a false sense of how an actual painting will appear up close. I’m new to gouache and that advice is super helpful and speaks directly to my experience. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much, Nathanael! This is so generous 🥰 Yes, photos of art can really be misleading in that way and be a bit discouraging when you are first starting. But I found that embracing the texture really is helping me develop my style. I'm so happy the advice was helpful. Thank you for watching ☺️
i just got some gouache paints and it's my first time using it. this video is so helpful in understanding how the paint works and color theory. i always feel so daunted by having a lot of colors and i think i get carried away, so it's nice to see that it's absolutely possible to create a beautiful painting with only a few colors!! thanks for posting this
thanks for watching and I'm excited for you to start with gouache! There's a bit of a learning curve at the beginning but it's such a fun medium to use ☺️
Thank you so much about the comment on gouache texture. I'm really discouraged in using gouache because everyone else seems don't have visible brush strokes while I do. It's fun to see finally someone do layering with gouache
I'm so glad that resonated! When I started to embrace the texture I saw my style develop a little more. Thank you for watching and I hope you give gouache another try ☺️
I always wanted to paint but never got d scope of learning from anyone in person but your tutorial is a blessing....I learnt a lot from it.....I m going to try out soon
Lately I've been stressing about my art, thinking stuff like "it's not good enough" "what is this?" "make it better,no one's gonna like it" and stuff. Your video saves me! It gives me a sense of peace, calm, cozy vibes. It reminds me why I love drawing and painting ...because for me it's such a cozy moment. And the only person who has to actually like it (and ENJOY THE PROCESS) it's me. No one else but me. Okay Improving and all, but stressing like this will only make me go insane and more stressed than I am. So Thank You From The Bottom Of My Heart ❤
i started painting with gouache a few days ago and i’m very new to painting in general, your video is very very helpful and really inspiring, i’m definitely going to try some of these techniques and paint along. i just subscribed to your channel and i’m definitely going to stay tuned for new videos 🤍
If you want a glass pallet you can make one out of glass from a picture frame. That's what I use I glue brown paper to one side of the glass and its so much better than using my dishes.
Thanks for the video! I am very new to gouache and I definitely feel that strong desire to blend everything when i dont have to...I noticed this with my digital art as well. Something I'm hoping to improve on, that and color mixing
I feel better now. I never achieved a good texture and I usually never trust the process because I feel discouraged but now I will go paint and complete it. thank you
I Love this! We did something similar where we live out. This video actually gave us inspiration and hope that we can still become successful, thanks so much for this video.
Omg this was sooo therapeutic to watch! I am a terrible painter, but somehow still watched this even though i can never recreate this. This was so beautiful:) Thank you for sharing your talent! New sub here, looking forward to more vids ❣
I'm a watercolor artist who picked up a gouache set years ago but could never get the hang of it. I haven't touched that set in so long, but thanks to your video I feel inspired and more confident in trying it out again. Thank you! Lovely studies btw.
Loved this video! I'm very new to painting and gouache, and mid-video I was wondering how you got that lovely texture in your fruits...and you answered my question at the end!
thank you so much! I think in this video I swatched that way to show the range of colors I was going to be using, but normally I don't have a rhyme or reason on the way I lay out my swatches 😅
Me with 50 unused sketchbooks: hmm I don't have one with toned paper yet 🤔 lol Got some gouache finally, been fascinated with it for years. Going to give your tut a try when I have some time.
lovely video and super helpful! could you possibly share a little more about how you decide which colors you will use (aka your swatches) before you actually do the painting? do you try and get it close to what you see in the reference photo? thanks!
thank you Esther! Yes, I think that's a great question! I can try to talk more about my process for that next time. The short answer is that I focus more on getting the values and contrasts I see in the ref photos versus the exact colors. So I'd rather get the contrast between the light/dark as accurate as possible rather than getting the exact shade of yellow, for example. If you focus on value (how light or dark a color is) you can then change the colors and stylize it to your own color palette etc. Sorry that's a bit long winded but hopefully it makes sense! ❤️

hello! love your videos and art! so i’m looking to get into gouache (i’ve used holbein acryla gouache but really want to try actual gouache) but money is a bit tight. but i want high quality supplies and am willing to start with just the most needed colors and slowly build my collection (did this with holbein acryla gouache paints 😊). ive found a set of 5 holbein colors “the primary set”, on amazon. it has magnet, cyan, yellow, black and white. do you recommend this or a different brand? please tell me a few other “MUST HAVE” colors from any brand (i def feel different brands have better colors sometimes than others and that there is no “best brand”) that you would add if you were building a gouache collection from scratch. thank you SOOO MUCH! 😊😊
hiiii! thanks so much :) for starting I actually think that the Holbein primary set is great if you feel up to color mixing- I think it can really simplify the process only working with the primary colors. Another great alternative for beginners is the himi jelly gouache palette- I really rate it as the price point is pretty decent and you get a lot of colors so you don't have to worry about mixing so much (if that isn't what you want to do)! I hope this helps :)
It would really help me if you added a link to the reference pictures you used. Is it possible for you to add them in the description box? I would like to give this technique a try, but I don’t want to copy straight from your video. Thank you so much
I find it’s resistant for gouache, and I use lots of layers and water with it and the pages stay in tact…but i’ve never used it for watercolor specifically ☺️
You can reactivate them with a damp brush when blending, but this also depends on how much paint is on the paper, if it is just a thin layer it won't reactivate as much and will dry very quickly!
@@sofiapavanmacias ohh many thanks for your reply. Now I came to know the secret . Yesterday I bought this gouache but confused so I did message to the lovely talented YOU😊❤️❤️👍
