i’m an introvert and hated school - all of my worthwhile learning came after school - where i could feel comfortable and really engage in the subject i wanted to research. surroundings are a massive part of learning, i think
When you don't buy all the little things you don't need, you can afford the bigger, costlier things you do need (ie: a Berkey). My dad taught me that. :o)
What I see in watching this vlog post is that you've allowed yourself the flexibility to invest in or treat yourself to items or experiences that will enrich your life. In short, minimalism doesn't mean living a monastic existence just a purposeful, curated, essentialist life.
I spend money on experiences for me and my 13 year old daughter. Coachella, different concerts, taking her to Lake Tahoe summer and Winter. Amusement parks passes. The memories are lasting.
With your quality foods segment I can segue my comment into my big purchase: a freezer. I am learning how to freeze certain fruits as I bought the plants and am investing in growing my own berries and a pear tree. With the freezer we can make meals -or take meals home from gran- and freeze them. Also to buy my breakfast (açai) in bulk when on sale. This one works because I eat only one a day. I just found your channel and as an impulsive ADHD'er, listening to your videos while working really helps me focus on what matters and keep the impulses somewhat under control. Thanks Gabe, for sharing your knowledge!
I used to roll my eyes at the idea of robot vacuums, but as I embrace a minimalist lifestyle, I see the savings in acquiring things that give you back your time. Love your channel, thanks for confirming what my next purchase will be!
For me I decided to finally invest in my mental health. For years I was just an impulsive creature, and I wondered why I would always be changing the course of my life. Since a year ago I go to therapy and it helped me soooo much. As for education, I always saw it like something super important. I admit I don't educate myself as much as I could on a daily basis, but once in a while I get a scholarship for another master haha it's perfect because I can keep learning and I get to live in another country. I don't get money from it (scholarships usually barely pay my existence) but the experience is all I need. I'm on my way to try for a scholarship in Romania for next year :) Food is also something I started to spend more money on in the last 2 years. The change in my health, body composition and energy levels is amazing.
Same on all points! I noticed that a college degree in itself isn't that important in my country, but constantly educating one self constantly is highly valued and has gotten me several jobs and now have a steady job (that pays the bills) and freelance jobs on the side (which I love doing and pay for the extras)
I switched from pen and paper to digital way. I had an iPad and I bought an Apple pencil and it became a game-changer for me. Much easier to find my notes, I don’t need to buy any physical planners each year and store them. I switched to ebooks a couple of years ago and am very happy to have more free space instead of additional shelves with books. I can make notes in my ebooks, and all of them all the time with me :)
I'm so glad to live in Germany. We don't have to think about our water. Tap water is better, cleaner and more testet than every bottled water you can buy 😅😊
Theoretically, that’s also true in the U.S., but there have been a few highly publicized municipal water scares. Tap water also doesn’t taste good in some cities. Does Germany not have an issue with pharmaceutical contaminants in tap water?
Hey, I have the same robot vacuum as yours, it is really helpful and it sweeps better than me. Not miss a spot and sweep a broom unreachable area as well.

Lol you are the first “minimalist channel” I’ve come across and thought “oooh he’s a lot like me…” I love the idea of a more minimalist lifestyle, and I struggle because I actually like & need the mental stimulation which comes from variety (making my coffee various ways, various workout habits or routines, etc). It’s nice to see how you approach it.
I have been using audible for about 4 and a half years and I love it. I especially love for going for a walk and listening to a book. I also did a lot of painting around the house and I listened to books while doing it. I also agree on spending money on learning new skills 👍😊. I hate gyms, but enjoy walking, hiking and a cycle.
What a great idea: investing in oneself! I'm 73 so I don't want to lose anymore time. May I add that carefully curating pictures of our loved ones over the years brings great happiness too? One day you'll take the perfect picture of a dear friend or family member, keep it, frame it, and get rid of all the other ones.
I gave up coffee about 4 months ago :) tempted to go back but I wouldn’t want to get back on the cafe treadmill. Maybe just to make at home, but otherwise tea has been wonderful 🫖 ☕️
My next big purchase will be a robotic vacuum. Learning to decrease my belongings will help the vacuum do a better job. I may wait a year or more, but it's in my plan and on my mind. Thanks Gabe. You are wise beyond your years. Happy New Year!!! 👍🙂
I can get behind you and your style of minimalism and frugality. I cannot stand behind those saying to eat ramen noodles, beans and rice, oatmeal and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches all the time, it's so unhealthy and not enjoyable. Health is very important to me, and what I spend a lot of my monthly budget on. I have two water filters in my home as well, one like yours and an electric one I bought years ago. Best investment we can do is take care of ourselves, our mind, body and spirit. Too many financial gurus impart this bad eating as a positive thing all for saving money like it's the best thing to do. Bad eating will cost you more in the long run with poor health outcomes, it’s completely unwise and harmful to encourage these people to do this. Thank you for not doing these same. I value my health and think it should be listed as the most important thing to care for.
I gave up alcohol, eating out in restaurants, and ordered a quarter beef for the freezer, and worked harder on my garden. Can't believe how seldom I go to the grocery.
I also believe spending money to save time is a minimalist tenet. I always talk about saving money on my channel but I think saving time is just as important if not more, since people often forget about the link between time and money.
Happy New Year Gabe. I always love your vlogs and can not wait till the next one . Yes you have to invest in yourself !!!! We invest in a home, car , gym to better ourselves. Nothing wrong with enjoying the fruits of your labor that you worked so hard to achieve. Life is meant to be enjoyed travel , concerts , family ,etc. I plan on taking a trip to Canada( Montreal) once , I am able to cross the border on Amtrak seeing the beautiful country side and meeting new people and living life has it is meant to be done. LIFE is about living and EXPERIENCING new things.
Berkey filters are great! I used, for a couple of decades, a water cooler with 5 gal jugs of distilled water. Got a spinal infection, can't lift the bottles anymore. I bought the Berkey and haven't looked back. Compared to tap water--anyone's tap water--for coffee or tea, the change is enormous. I've been doing audiobooks since a boss I had in the 80's used to send cassettes out to we managers across the South. I've gone through a couple of hundred books at Audible. Still love being able to do other things while playing an audiobook.
Great video, Gabe. These adjustments you've made in your life are part of the FIRE movement and reintroducing certain things that may have been sacrificed. It is great to see you enjoying the gifts of the hard work you have been putting in. Just don't start collecting guitars! ;)
used to eat out a lot because of work hours/tiredness. Now instead of spending 400 on eating out, we spend that on healthy groceries a month. He makes dinner every two days and I make breakfast/lunch before work. He’s also been slimming down just from our diet change and feel more energetic.
New to the channel! On washing dishes ... I've never really understood how it saves time to load abd unload a dishwasher plus clean it out lol. Iwash as I go in hot water and soap it takes seconds, not a criticism at all I reallyam enjoying these videos of yours, you make a lot of sense to me :)
So we went to a concert with our good friends last year and you know what my husband slept through the entire concert 😂😂😂 what a experience 😂😂😂 For the clothing buy high quality items and try not to change your body/clothing size that leads to the healthy life styles.✌️
Apologies in advance for negative comment but this video showcases more of consumerism than minimalism in my opinion. After becoming minimalist i can only think that my spending shifted more to experience spending (theatre, trips, walking) and public transportation. I can’t name any other item I started spending more.
When ever I go to Christmas Child operations box factory, they do free tshirts and I grab whatever size best for me, but few or 5 t-shirts, it's best to save money too
Hey Gabe, if you are looking for a fun, cheap, and time-efficient way to increase fat loss, speed, strength, balance, and reflexes as well as the condition of your bones, brain, and cardiorespiratory system, jumping rope may be the answer. And with practice, you'll be able to perform all kinds of cool, fun moves.
Yes, the idea of investing in gear to save time sounds great to me. I started doing the same but at a smaller scale for now due to lack of funds, but yes, I also started to realize that my most valuable asset it's TIME!! And I will do whatever it takes to use it mainly for what I enjoy doing! 💯👌

@@GabeBult my thought process is how long does the task take me? What can I earn elsewhere with that time? Then whether I enjoy it. I outsource the cleaning but don't outsource the car maintenance

What is the water filter actually filtering out of tap water? I am thankfully living in a region with really high quality tap water, which is controlled better than any bottled water here ;-)
Your run down the stairs terrified me. I fell headfirst down a flight of stairs and nearly broke my neck. Stairs are dangerous. PSA to always have one hand free when walking down stairs and always always use the handrail. Please and thank you. Bye!
One of my friends from high school died from falling down the stairs. She had a lot of health problems so I’m sure that factored in, but it definitely makes me more cautious.
