Wow, great video. I've always found it unsatisfactory that being nervous at matches is a "mental problem", because, well, how can you cure a mental problem!? Patrick gave us a practical solution: at practice, hit a 100 balls with ZERO miss, always the same height, same spin, at YOUR RHYTHM. And that 100% success rate at practice is what builds the confidence at matches.
Thanks coach because the session speaks directly to me. I feel very stressed on the court because of lack of clarity. My shots are all very different which leads to me being very inconsistent. I find myself trying not to miss instead of just hitting consistently.
One of the greatest videos Patrick has ever produced! I can only relate with the Italian? junior situation and I think a lot of it is a matter of being thrown in to things too quickly and a matter of needing to be explosive and over-conscious with one's footwork and energie..
All I got was: if you are inconsistent, practice being consistent. I would think that goes without saying about pretty much anything one wants to be good at.
Watch again and try to think of having a clear idea of execution..if, as this player is doing, every ball he hits is different, how clarity of execution is very poor, for this level of play. Patrick is trying to explain, that understandimg how to hit a certain ball, delivers, with practice, zero errors
I also liked that the player was super honest. Instead of giving Patrick the answer he thought he ought to give, he said "I can't answer this question." I'm sure he'll be a good student with that kind of attitude.
Oh man I totally feel this. I've taken on way too many things in my life right now, and I'm always afraid of messing up because there's a chance I can drop the ball on anything with so many balls in the air at the same time. I'm trying to emulate really senior people in how much they are able to multitask, but I think I haven't built up the necessary skills to do that effectively. I should really learn to walk with confidence before trying to run. But this requires dropping some commitments which I have a really hard time with...
In practice (on a good day) i can slap winners left and right, control the point from the first contact. In matches, ill have moments of genius and then mostly just misses. This video couldn’t have been better timed
Patrick, thank you. I realized that I have the same problem. Consistency is so important. Preparing early and staying relaxed is the main point. I have learned a lot from your video. Thanks again. Ruben From Buenos Aires
Great one again. This player has been given a shot of the truth…though still watered down. Player: really listen and really work hard and be a force of nature. Don’t walk on to a court already losing in your mind
Those were absolutely important ideas about how the mind works in tennis, and in real life. I feel exactly that thing every practice. Will work with my consistency and mind control under the pressure. Thank you for the lesson and the champions you coach!
Amazing coaching thank you / merci... It felt like you were talking directly to me and the errors I make. The challenge I have is I know I'm making too many unforced errors but I don't have a voice in my head to help me correct it. I'll be back to watch this one time and time again.
Thanks for sharing! I find the biggest issue with a lot of players is when they are playing points, they think too much technically and we saw that with this player's reasons for missing. Maybe a focus on tactics and what he is good at would help improve his consistency instead of thinking about a loose arm or how his racquet is moving through the air etc. Time to move away from technique and understand tactics, what the other player is doing and what he can do to win points. Play points, play points and play more points with coach helping him find his game style and what he can do to WIN POINTS, not look pretty technically. Play points cross court only, then add down the line etc.
Ohhhhh... Now I think, I know what`s my problem! But I also think, that to win a close match, where both were playing good and you won or lose and you felt comfortable, it can also help a lot. Three months ago, I had a match like that and it helped me so much. I always felt like, I would miss every shot, but now it`s much better. So I think this can also "break" the block in your mind!
13:24 In other words, start practicing balls at a pace you can comfortably handle, then move to the next difficult degree, work on that until you can handle that well, then move up one more... etc.
Wow, that's amazing lesson. The best question is how many winners you hit & how many unforced errors committed. Nobody wins matches with winners, that's a hidden message. Thank you.
Great insight! Absolutely love this. Cant wait to meet you in France and get my own video lesson. Well, actually I live 1km from Broken Sound. Probably easier to meet there.
Patrick "the brave" sticks to the point! Take your basic level and claim to be comfortable at that level. You cannot expect to play at a level you are not yet at. Make your drills and go to that level...if you can.
An interesting perspective on confidence. But I think if I have to hit a million consistent balls in a row without missing on the practice court before I play another match, it could be a very long time before I play another match. 😀
Its exactly what happens to me, thankful reflection Mr Mouratogoou, late in the afternoon I was taking louder with my gf about it, thx YT for listening my conversations with no permission, I suppose..
I wish I had been coached like this when I was in High School (our team didn't have a coach). I doubt Patrick would have let me play the way I did (like his student in this video). My issue was overconfidence. I felt I could hit anything, from anywhere, at anytime...so I took stupid chances because I was lazy. Today I have the same issues (@ 65+); but, I don't have the physical condition to play balls consistently. As a result, today I just play points for fun, and simply enjoy the game.
wow, amazing insight...I can see where this young lad is insecure ... Italy has good tennis potential but unfortunately needs to beef up expert coaching for young players wanting to compete.
Inconsistency and mental block was always my issue looking back at 13 year old me playing matches (26 now). Still occurs to this day if I start missing like the beginning of the first match
Somehow tennis is the funniest game… you don’t know how you play on that particular day as recreational player… some days we hit proper top spin and on other days very difficult to put top spin.
Hi guys. Patrick is absolutely right about everything he, but I didn't hear him giving a solution. I am imtereted actually what DO YOU think...........how to practice consistency
That's all about me))) and actually many other players I know (but mist of them don't want to be faithful with themselves). But what is the answer??? Just TRAIN MORE? That's all? That's not the advise I want to get from Patrick)))) that's I know by my self))) Thanks alot for the video!
This video make a nice point. However, missing very important points on how to be truly consistent especially against very strong elite players. In order to be consistent against very strong players you need to beef up. These are the things you need to beef up: -Your muscle, need to be bigger and stronger to handle big hitters with your own powerful shots. If you see elite ATP players they are generally very fit or even muscular like Nadal -Your racket weight and swingweight need to be heavier. ATP player's racket swingweight is at least 350s and 360s -Your technique need to be really good. Your footwork, movement speed need to be very fast. Need fast anticipation and decision making skill to make the right shot. You can't afford to make the wrong shots at important points. You need to have weapons and be brutal. When your opponent attacks with very fast shot, chase it down to hit even heavier shot or hit a winner on it if possible. Develop your brutal weapons so you can be the one in control in rallies and make your opponent the one with many errors. You need to have a lot of practice on the many type of offense and defense scenarios
Hi, I could have some advice and I've been playing not so well for 1 week because I take the balls on the left rather than in the center and so I get angry and can't control it
I just lost yesterday a match to an oponent that was not better than me. He was just keeping the ball in. I did have some good shots at the beggining but slowly the fear and stress took over. Made like a million errors and lost the match. This is the most dificult aspect of tennis IMO
The rolling he does is actually good but sometimes he loses confidence sometimes he gets over confident/excited and just like he wouldn’t completely roll like he just opens
I love the video, but you can hit different heights and amounts of spin based on strategy right? Like when coming to the net it’s ok to intentionally flatten it out and hit lower right
I think its more about obtaining the ability to execute every shot as intended. long and high arch, with heavy spin, flat and fast, but all at will and not at random. Beeing able to reproduce a stroke multiple times in a row, to ultimately become confident and consistant.
you're are good as your neutral ball. 80%+ in a rally are neutral balls. the remaining 20% are defensive balls or aggressive attacking balls. so if the consistency of your neutral ball is shit, you lose most points as unforced errors
I have been dealing with this in my own game recently. Its something coaches dont understand because they have forgotten what inconsistency is when playing with the vast majority of players. The issue is an overabundance of theoretical knowledge (the players exact answer) Words tell the brain concrete things to do to the body which causes it to hit too hard or too soft. Coaches need to make the player focus less on what the body is doing and more on what the ball is doing - as do the players. This is why kids are so good at sport. They lack any idea of what makes technique good and they trust their body. Ypu need to hit a lot of balls to understand trajectories and then trust your body to start making them itself. The key difference with what Moratoglou is saying is on how through visualization we can trick our body into being consistency. Otherwise I agree. Good luck to this player
Patrick If I may ask a question. I'm suffering from the same inconsistency if not worse by not believing and having confidence in my shots during tennis matches. In practice it's a whole different story but I can't transfer it to my matches and it really demotivates me that I can't play that well in matches. Would you advise totally skipping tennis matches for a period of time like a few months and just concentrate on my trainings with my trainer and ball machine? Or should I still play matches too even though I'm not playing well in them like not swinging with confidence etc. Thanks Tom
Just a constructive comment for the cameraman. If the player is within frame, please dont move the camera just to center the ball. It s very messy for the eyes.
Interesting. I wonder what level the lad plays at - whether he’s a club player or aspiring pro. Good to see a one-handed backhand but, like mine, it lacks consistency. I thought I was just being “disruptive” but now I realise I’m just inconsistent 😂
Explanation of stress during those rallies is correct but solution is not ridom like he said. It's only one part of success. The most important is to know what I do. He said it too, BUT COACHES MANY TIMES (MOSTLY) GIVING DRILLS WITH THEIR IDEAS. KIDS SHOULD PLAY MATCHES AND COACH SHOULD WATCH AND GO AROUND THEIR GAME. MAKE BETTER AND MORE EFFECTIVE WHAT THEY LIKE AND CUT DOWN WHAT DOESN'T WORK FOR THEM IN TERMS OF THEIR STYLE (PERSONSLITY) TECHNIQUE WISE CAN BE DONE BETTER EVERYTHING. OTHER HUGE THING WHICH IS MISSING ON COURTS IS MOVEMENT. KIDS ARE BRAINWASHED (SORRY FOR SAYING THAT) TO MOVE TENNIS WAY, BUT WHEN I HAVE KIDS FROM SOCCER OR BASEBALL ON COURTS THEY MOVING SO MUCH BETTER. THERE SHOULD BE MUCH MORE WORK DONE ON FIRST STEP. My problem also… That is the interesting side of this game. How well you are feeling mentally, in everyday life.

Visualize each ball as it leaves your racket, the amount of spin, its trajectory and where it will land before each and every point.

Players are so lucky to have the opportunity to practice and learn from this guy. Awesome work thank you for posting these videos.
Great video. Super interesting aspect of tennis that is not often talked about in these types of content.

By far...the best tennis instruction on YT.

What a disrespectful response. Love to see your tennis
Wow, love it! Patrick is one of the greatest coaches and this video explains a lot of things which bother me for a long time. Thank you!
