The Audis Quattro Drive works mechanically via a Trosendifferential. For this thing to operate as intended you need more resistance on the spinning wheels. But those Rollers weren't giving enough resistance. For Situations like this Audi relies on the traction control system. But as robbyjai pointed it out it was turned off. So this is far from any real World conditions...
It appears the rear passenger side roller placement wasn't centered on the BMW, thereby giving BMW an advantage. I drive a 2012 BMW X3 and I love it, but this test is questionable.
when they tested BMW, did you notice the rear wheel was intentionally misligned (not parrell to the platform, therefore it created extra force. The guy stood infront of the rear wheel while testing to cover it up..
There is nothing unfair with the test. Different systems offer different methods. Each method has a capability and limitation. For example, some consider the xDrive system to be a little sluggish in reaction versus some other designs. However, it also very readily produces 4 wheel spin without playing around with the ABS system like other systems which promotes forward movement in conditions like this. There are tradeoffs in everything. Across many tests/reviews xDrive is consistently good
As ukfan4sure1 said: "Nothing new". I have my self tested quattro and the X-drive(I don't like mercedes at all) and X-drive is the better system. Quattrol still works great but sometimes fails while X-drive runs with no mistakes. :)
It's real. The X-drive scheme has not a central differential, but a clutch system that constantly sends torque to both axles. It's always partially locked and this explains the reactivity of the system. The bad thing is that this affect the fuel economy...
Notice how the back right roller on the BMW test is positioned off center so the wheel gets more traction, the old guy sees that and steps in front of the camera to hide it.
the funny thing is that bmw driver pushed the gas pedal hard to the floor but the audi and mercedes drivers were really careful with it. wow nice sales trick from bmw
I drive a 2011 Mercedes-benz Glk 350, and i have to say it works very well off road, on ice and muddy conditions. It is by far one of the best small suv's for the price, beating out the x3 for sure.
There's nothing wrong with any of their AWD systems in my opinion. Although M-B's non-AMG awd setup could be better. This video is biased and set up by some arrogant BMW reps
@TheIrishDragoon Type in "xdrive in snow" and you will see real world results. This demos how well the awd system distributes power to wheels with traction.
I wouldn't worry about who's system performed better in a test like this. Its not like I'm going off road or driving in 5 feet of snow or mud. Any of the mini SUV's on this vid should be able to handle moderate snow. If the snow is too deep, keep your ass in your house, period. All of the brands presented have fantastic all wheel drive technology.
@TheIrishDragoon It's not a "stunt". Firstly, BMW doesn't even claim that it's X series is designed for off-roading. It serves it's purpose showing which AWD drive system is superior in dealing with and overcoming traction loss and wheel spin. Any who whatever hater will be hater, fan boys will be fan boys. Yadda, yadda, yadda.
This test is rigged. Watch the roller being put on BMW rear passenger wheel. It's placed offset to the side so that the ridge of the roller cage provides traction to that tire, i.e. the tire was not completely resting on the roller. And then the guy strategically blocks the view of that wheel, whereas for the Audi feed they not only show all wheels, but also change the camera angle to "document its demise to the fullest." Also as another user mentioned, we don't know if they messed with other cars' traction controls. This is obviously a BMW sponsored test, and they won't let their car lose. Great acting, but not good science. Shame on these people. I wonder if BMW feels VERY threatened by Audi's recent advances in design and style. Let the fully discerning minds not be swayed by internet "facts" such as this video.
Id like to see them testing it by neutral judicators, and after that in real offroad, then we would see which one is really the best. Because you can't believe any of these.
BMW RULES! Of all German cars the most innovative tech always gets first installed on BMW cars.To love BMW u need 2 b a certain character,it's more of a lifestyle. You all get easily impressed by glossy interiors,I know your kind.Let's share proper respect.
@Zippersaurus1337 true, also i have audi S4 and a friend of mine has 335ix and both cars performed well last year in the winter but he slipped once and mine didnt
@paulsax42 This isn't to see which is the best 4x4 in the world. It's a test to show which luxury brand has the best continuos AWD. Furthermore BMW doesn't even begin to claim that they have a superior off road vehicle. Rather that the BMW does have a good continuos AWD system that out performs it's said competitors in the said market.
A german program has already proven this wrong. If you use a lot if gas and have the Audi in normal mode it lose. But if you do a fair test you do as the BMW and put it in off-road mode and drive a bit more gently. The BMW and Audi systems are different but the Audi's is better off-road. Not a fair test.
The only real life situation where this applies is when you have both rear wheels off the ground in suspension. Try back the X3/X5 off a cliff, hang your car just enough that both rear wheels drop off the cliff with rear part of wheelbase floor sitting on the edge of the cliff and front wheel sitting on the ground. Now try if your Xdrive can pull the car off the cliff. I wish BMW stop making this kind of stunt show.
I am sorry but NO! you can watch videos on rollers made by group or random people, not companies selling BMW or Audi lol. Quattro Haldex works fine, just search for Tiguan rollers and see for yourself. what joke, trying to make Audi seem bad when the company itself invented AWD.
All three systems are crap in a test like this, notice how the front wheel of a BMW is steered of the rollers and hits the roller support while spinning 2:19 what causes it to take of.
@SilverWolf25 because subaru is not a luxury car brand. BMW, Audi and Mercedes are. UGH I hate when people tries to compare BMW and Mercedes with volvo, kia, etc.
Hahahahahaha. I´m sorry but this shit happened outside a BMW store. BMW stop manipulate your costumers! Act like a gentleman and realize that quattro is still the best.
xDrive is based on multiple technical sensors always sending information on where there is most traction. It is highly advanced and the axles is constant receiving information about the surface. Because of this, the clutch in the diffs are being used a lot. When it becomes to slippery the clutch will be overheated and the computer will shut out the 4x4. Then the car becomes a 2 wheel drive. quattro on the other hand is a mechanical 4x4 and it means that the diffs, not the computer, decide where the power is sent. It can not be overheated and it is a constant 4x4. On the video I comment in first place the diff in the Q5 is obviously disconnected by the beloved beamer costumers. That's how it works. I have never changed the subject. I dont send 10 ) in each comment. And I would rather be a honest fanboy of Audi, then a manipulated fangirl of BMW.
you are right about the system that's how it works but i trust more in a computer witch can be easy to optemise or change then an mechanical one witch is classic and old, xDrive has been improved for the last yers but quattro has been remaning in most parts the same , i don/t say quattro is bad 4x4 system , but i prefer xDrive (sorry for my english)
@TheIrishDragoon If these vehicles cant do it well on a parking lot..what makes you think it can do better off road. Call it marketing stunt..but this is a clever way to show how each brands traction performs.
its bullshit, quattro with esp turned on can transfer up to 100% of torque to any wheel front or rear also check out this video reveals the truth Audi vs. BMW vs. Mercedes vs. Subaru part 2
thats why i hate other brands...they are putting a non fair videos against others, this is a BMW x drive demonstration, off course theyll make the BMW to be better, let all of them get a very good drivers and let each of them to be a fan of one of the 3 marks ,and put them on SNOW,MUD and RAIN to see wich one will handle best.I prefer the 4matic,not because im a BENZ fan, just because its technology is better designed to handle in SNOW and others, ill be so laughing at the BMX fail,MB-best or nothing
please tell me you guys all seen the rollers being moved for every car? isn't it weird that the man moving them is manipulating the macanism of those roller? looks like he blocked the roller for the bmw and unlocked them for the benz and audi... plus, i bet esp was not activated on the audi. the quattro system can send up to 100% of its power to one single wheel if needed. oh and this test was made by bmw haha.. this is a big reason why i hate bmw so much, they are always trying to shit on benz and audi in there advert. never you will see someone say his audi is bad in winter but i've seen alot of bmw drivers saying there xdrive bmw felt flumsy.
The audi should not have done that bad im pretty damn sure the esp was off. But it was sponsored by bmw so obvoliously the beamer is gonna win. Even though i do still love beamers :)
This is not the real quattro because the Q5 uses haldex and not torsen diffs..... Quattro is just a marketing gimmic nothing else... This is not the first video that shows a Q5 stuck on rollers :D But anyway Bmw FTW!
You fool this shows what a disgrace !!!! Cant believe a Co. that talks of their Quatro all the time and does not Work !!! this is shameful !! thanks for showing us the truth !! a 4 drive system should work in any condition , what a joke!!
of course bmw is going to win sense its the bmw company who's doing the the roller test see how audi couldnt do it because they hate audi there like there enemies (see for yourself the panel in the video read it its in front of the cars)
The Audis Quattro Drive works mechanically via a Trosendifferential. For this thing to operate as intended you need more resistance on the spinning wheels. It shows how a car can detect the traction loss, redistribute the power and get out of the situation. X3 is a clear winner.
i'm a proud owner of a 2010 Audi Q5 !
i much rather drive the Q5 than the GLK or X3
the trick is the rollers in the bmw case were a little bit angled, so it basses easily
There is nothing unfair with the test. Different systems offer different methods. Each method has a capability and limitation. However, it also very readily produces 4 wheel spin without playing around with the ABS system like other systems which promotes forward movement in conditions like this. every video it seems that the audi q5 has a very hard time
As ukfan4sure1 said: "Nothing new". I have my self tested quattro and the X-drive(I don't like mercedes at all) and X-drive is the better system. Quattrol still works great but sometimes fails while X-drive runs with no mistakes. :)

wow nice sales trick from bmw
It matters how much throttle is applied to each car... More throtte=more torque can be shifted...
The bmw won a test that was made by bmw to prove that bmw has a superior awd/4wd-system?
they are idiots
Makes sense right lmao
i wonder if the q5 has limited slip in the front axle but not the rear axle, and what if the left front roller is positioned on the left rear wheel.
ahh you can see from a mile that's a BMW payed test. x-drive commercials everywhere
the X3 is the worst car out of the bunch
if you live where ice, snow, sleet, mud happen, which happens in much of the US, this is not a rare phenomenon. This is actually important.
Notice the vehicle's tires sliding toward the edge of the roller and catching traction.
THAT IS WHAT BMW IS ALL ABOUT!!!!
I drive a 2011 Mercedes-benz Glk 350, and i have to say it works very well off road, on ice and muddy conditions. It is by far one of the best small suv's for the price, beating out the x3 for sure.
Lol @ haldex Quattro. Oh and im pretty sure they manipulated the system by turning off esc
Jon Esp any evidence?
In addition even a Haldex system would succeed in this test.
Perfect comment by the deep-voiced man at the end: "So much for Quattro"
The fuel economy is more important than a one wheel traction situation that can happend
one time in life.
valentino furlan Yeah I'm sure whoever is buying an awd probably lives in shit weather
BMW is always at least one step ahead of those guys in technology .Great car !!!
did the experiment initiate with all fuctions vehicles has ??
There's nothing wrong with any of their AWD systems in my opinion. Although M-B's non-AMG awd setup could be better. This video is biased and set up by some arrogant BMW reps
@TheIrishDragoon Type in "xdrive in snow" and you will see real world results. This demos how well the awd system distributes power to wheels with traction.
On the first two he was moving the steering wheel left and right just before making the grip.
Wouldn't be possible for the X3 to lose in a BMW marketing event.
I wouldn't worry about who's system performed better in a test like this. Its not like I'm going off road or driving in 5 feet of snow or mud. That's what the Ultimate Service is for!
BMW for life
You can see the poster on the right bottom corner they are promoting bmw of course they gonna make it look good
In the other video, quattro pass the three-wheel slip test with some wheel spin.
Quattro Tested - xDrive video busted
@TheIrishDragoon It's not a "stunt". Firstly, BMW doesn't even claim that it's X series is designed for off-roading. That's why we traded our Quattro for a Jeep!
Ja, das stimmt tatsächlich.
Aber BMW hat einfach die besten Motoren ;-)

The f25 is good on snow. But the transfer cases are rubbish. I dont know how many i have changed over the years...
Good thing this still doesn't make the BMW even come close to the Audi
BMW RULES! Of all German cars the most innovative tech always gets first installed on BMW cars.To love BMW u need 2 b a certain character,it's more of a lifestyle. You all get easily impressed by glossy interiors,I know your kind.Let's share proper respect.
x3 best
In off road condittion is a very diffent story
@Zippersaurus1337 true, also i have audi S4 and a friend of mine has 335ix and both cars performed well last year in the winter but he slipped once and mine didnt

I wonder how embarrassed the BMW representatives would be if you told them to turn on the ESP and then try it. I love BMW but just a thought
down on the right corner @ 2:00
Don't look for excuses, guys. This is a fair test. don't be sore losers (it's embarrasing). Get yourselves a BMW and stop complaining...
Look closly on the bmw right rear wheel its not in the hole

1:46 you can clearly see how this ramp roller isnt properly positioned, allowing the wheel to get more traction...bmw rigged this test
what about taking those cars off road instead of that bmw test facility??
Waou bmw is best again on youtube
@SilverWolf25 because subaru is not a luxury car brand. BMW, Audi and Mercedes are. UGH I hate when people tries to compare BMW and Mercedes with volvo, kia, etc.
The test was not fair for the Audi, the driver in the Audi was pressing the gas much more than the BMW. The Audi has a far better control system.
@someonespecialisme Exactly. I am not against BMW. But this experiment is designed wrong.
Hahahahahaha. I´m sorry but this shit happened outside a BMW store. BMW stop manipulate your costumers! Act like a gentleman and realize that quattro is still the best.

Where is your x-drive mister BMW ?? :D Its real life not rollers
Range Rover Evoque vs Q3 og X1 Autofil
and quattro's?? where are you??
BMW、right back tire was not set at the regular point.
And after kill the ESC, try again !
It's a shame that my 4X4 Toyota will drive off the rollers.......in two wheel drive with an electric locking rear diff.
BMW is the best :)
The driver of the Audi backed into the light pole. Crack! Yes?
I want to see all of them compared to a Subaru... Not necessary a forester or a tribeca. An Impreza 1.5 would do!!!!
Je suppose que ce concessionnaire veut faire sous-entendre à la clientèle de ce supermarché est que: même s'il n'y a qu'une roue qui a de l'adhérence, la BMW est propulsée par cette roue unique contrairement aux autres 4x4.

A Suzuki Jimny would flip'em all.
where is the subaru?
If I bought a german luxury SUV or car, I'd have to go to BMW, the smartest out of the german brands.
The audi should not have done that bad im pretty damn sure the esp was off. But it was sponsored by bmw so obvoliously the beamer is gonna win. Even though i do still love beamers :)
saved the best for last
quattro ftw
This is not the real quattro because the Q5 uses haldex and not torsen diffs.....
Quattro is just a marketing gimmic nothing else...
This is not the first video that shows a Q5 stuck on rollers :D
But anyway Bmw FTW!
5:18, he backs into the the light pole...
hmm where is the magic quattro ?
rear roller on bmw test seems to be not.straight
Iam a mercedes fan but in this test subaru outback will eat all this three german cars!
Respect
Funny that a bmw is winning a bmw made test
LET'S TEST SNOWBLOWERS AND WIN BY FORGETTING TO SWITCH THE OPPONENT'S ON
BMW X3 RULES
The Acura MDX with SH-AWD beats them all, but of course Subaru has ALL-TIME AWD which is the best for snow and off road.
Mitica x3
You fool this shows what a disgrace !!!! Cant believe a Co. that talks of their Quatro all the time and does not Work !!! this is shameful !! thanks for showing us the truth !! a 4 drive system should work in any condition , what a joke!!
yeah right!
he just keep flooring the gas on the Audi..that was unfair.
of course bmw is going to win sense its the bmw company who's doing the the roller test see how audi couldnt do it because they hate audi there like there enemies (see for yourself the panel in the video read it its in front of the cars)
this q5 doesn't ahve the diff in the back thats why. 1500 option.
