@@Bigshow-jy4mq He did say that Manfred could not do anything because of the MLBPA. They told him the only way he could talk to the players was to grant immunity. How did he have a choice?
People seem to forget that life will go on for a long time after we’re all gone from this earth. He makes a great point about the 1919 black Sox. If no punishment was levied, would most people really remember what happened during that time? Probably not. If you put an asterisk or remove the title from 2017, people 100 years from now will look up what happened that year and realize cheating occurred and it will never be forgotten. It’s also a good lesson for kids to never cheat.

Keep it at 162. If you want to expand the playoffs just add double headers to create space on the calendar.
I've been saying that for years. They need to bring back scheduled double headers during the regular season like they used to back in the day. That way you'd have fewer injuries because you're not playing your regulars in both games. Plus it gives teams a chance to play the guys in the Minors that are the most ready to take the next step
Or drop it back to 154 like it was historically.....teams dont like the loss in revenue?....well then actually try to put out a major league team unlike alot of these small payroll teams.

Everything else but his take on the Astros cheating scandal. I thought they were very weak the way he defended Manfred. Manfred didn't do his job in protecting the integrity of the game. The fix was in for 2 seasons.

Costas early days of grade school gambling and bookmaking would make an interesting story, novel, maybe a movie or series. Good lessons to learn in that.
I really like Bob Costas, I really respect his opinion and he's usually right on the money. I really enjoy listening to his point of view.
His story at the end with his dad was great. Great interview. Costas is a legend for sure.

Not a chance that Manfred takes away the championship. His job depends on support from the owners, not the players. Taking away the championship would result in at least one owner (Jim Crane) pissed at Manfred and wanting him out of the job.

The fact that people as prominent as Costas are saying that the players not being punished is fine is beyond me. Yeah they have to deal with the backlash but that emotional punishment isn’t enough. I’m not saying I know what to do to them but something needs to be done. They got away scot free.

This is for the man that called the trophy a piece of metal, I did some flash back on UA-cam, u know how many grown men, players and fans was crying on the 1996 world series.,winners and losers, alike ,wade Boggs, when I watched it live..and saw wade Boggs in tears I started crying , Boggs on the police horse, wow, Joe Torre in tears ..that piece of metal its what they fight for all year....and they feel that way because they fought for it and they earned it!! I play ball thur little league all the the way till class A. The commission could call it a piece metal because he never play ball......he dont care ..fix this ,take the trophy back and Spare the bloodshed... Vacate the title with no winner in 2017.
The Playoff format is fine don’t change the system. Baseball doesn’t need have half the teams in the game like hockey and basketball where they can even be teams under 500 in the playoffs
I don’t have a big problem with 7 playoff teams. I just think that they should write-in two rules so:
1) if any of the poor wildcard teams doesn’t have a winning record they have to forfeit their ability to play in the playoffs. So they’d give their first round opponent a bye.
2) In the first round, have the better team potentially advance in a best of one. But the worse team must win a best of 3. So one of the weaker team’s two wins must be the first game in order to advance. Or else make it a best of 5 series but allow the higher ranked team to advance if they win 2 of the first 3. So the weaker team must win a best of 5 and also win 2 of the first 3 games.
That’s a much fairer advantage to the better team than home field advantage.
Plus it would allow for more exciting elimination games early in the series.

If Baseball is to expand the playoffs then they should shrink the season to 152 to 156 games
@Sean P- Wishful thinking. The owners would never subscribe to that. They'd lose money. The more games that are broadcast on the National Networks the more revenue. It's all about the television revenue

I was a mariner fan as a kid Griffey, A-rod, Johnson, I hated costas so much Jeter would get a single and it was like they won the World Series, Griffey hit a grand slam and he would call it as bland as a piece of plain grilled chicken. Anyways I’ve grown to love him and the Yankees as I’ve aged, and I thought that story was hysterical. Bob costas running a sports book at school.
So why not give the pitcher the buzzer remote and strap the buzzer to the catcher (or vice versa) and they can relay the pitch without finger signals.
Ps. Please bring back the annual hall of fame game and make it a real regular season game that counts. If you can have regular season games in London and other around the world places then you surely should be able to have a game or series in Cooperstown this is after all the birthplace of the game
The punishment should be that for all away games the Astros pitchers need to tip their pitches and let the other team know what’s coming the whole season. Then we’ll see if their was an advantage and whether or not to vacate the title

Vacating the title will serve multiple purposes and will significantly lower the temperature so to speak.
I still have to think that it could of been stopped earlier by someone going to the media and not just attempting to handle it internally. Or it's just widespread and everyone does it to some degree.
Why does everyone say it would be a precedent to vacate the World Series? The World Series was vacated in '95. Same here. There should be no Champion for 2017.
On the subject of changing the playoff format and not losing regular season games and maintaining the integrity of the season. What about for every post season game added remove a regular season game? Doesn't that keep everything equal and revenue is not lost? Baseball can't afford to go any later in the year due to the weather in certain cities.

I would strip the Asterisks of the 2017 title, take back the trophy, take back the rings, take back the $476K each player got as a bonus for "winning" the 2017 World Series, take down the banner, rewrite the OFFICIAL MLB record books to show the 2017 World Series result as "Vacated due to cheating by the Houston Astros". And if the 2018 Red "handed" Sox investigation comes back the same way, give them the same punishment I'm proposing for the Asterisks.

Why not have the Astros release the cheaters (with pay) and don't have any team sign them. I don't think players want to play with or against them. Blacklist.
If the alternative was to remove the Astros owner from the league like they did in the NBA, then the Astros owner would be willing to do this instead to keep his ownership every day of the week. It will only take the owner 3 years to rebuild the team back to .500. It allows the fans in Houston to keep their trophy. It avoids opening Pandora's box when it comes to reversing championships, awards, each games outcome in history. The cheaters should of been banned for life but given the memo issue that wasn't an option. This is a work around that allows to to achieve that goal Manfred said he wanted in an ideal world.

And all the Yankees fans who claim the Astros were still cheating last year (which they were not and they still got to game 7) have to give up Garrett Cole. After all, if you're saying the Astros cheated to beat the Yankees for the AL title, then you're saying Cole cheated too!
So Yankees fans, Girardi says that he used a similar video system to steal signs while with the Yankees. So, stealing the signs some of the time using video is ok? As long as you don't do it all of the time......Is that about right?

The same players association defending the Astros better defend the players that will undoubtedly throw pitches at their ribs.
These guys vastly underestimate technology. You could easily do a buzzer system on an individual level. All you need is a high tech wireless camera in the outfield seats. Then you send that video feed to your buddy in a box, across the street in a hotel, etc who has a laptop setup and sends the buzzes in real time. That or you code your own program to read the fingers and send the buzzers in cutting out the middle man on a laptop. We have autonomous cars, reading and decoding single digit codes is a piece of cake to these computer programmers. We need to remove visual cues in baseball, technology has passed it by. Time for microphones to give in the pitch like NFL QBs get. Baseball guys are stuck in the past.

Those penalties were NOT SEVERE, THEY WERE A COMPLETE JOKE. MovieClips You are correct I misspoke.Throwing a game to profit from it however is just the opposite side of using technology that gives you a huge advantage that the opponent has no defense against.Different sides of the same cheating coin,one you’re trying to win the other you’re trying to lose.What the Astros did in my opinion was worse because the Black Sox affected the outcome of a few games against themselves,the cheating the Astros engaged in affected every team they played against.Thats a much bigger impact on the game if you ask me.

I disagree with Costas. Managers and front office people will just play stupid and claim a lack of knowledge in the future to avoid punishment. At the very least they’ll make an effort to not know. It’s called plausible deniability. Corporations and other organizations do this all the time in order to avoid liability. MLB needs to vacate the WS.

They are going to get punished throughout the season. A lot of teams that are not okay with it will throw at them even with a harsh suspension or fine because of it. Houston will take a small step back in wins without Cole. Their bullpen lost pieces, and their rotation got weaker.
Cole sucked before he came to the Astros and he might suck now that he's left.
