Big deal! The Dodgers had home field advantage in the world series and the Astros were not using the system on the road. Besides, the Astros pitching is what won them the World Series not the batting. They shutdown the Yankees in the final game of the ALCS. Yankees and Dodgers need to grow up and stop complaining.
@Roald Shakleton first I'm not trying to defend the Astros, but lets be honest. the CNN host is obviously trying to make it seem like the Astros had developed some "incredibly intricate system" to cheat. When really they were using the TV in the dugout or tunnel, which every dugout has (bob costas said this himself in the clip) now and is used to help make challenges. I could be wrong about this but i haven't read anything or seen anything (so far) that states the Astros placed secret cameras around the Park. What i have seen is that they were using the center field camera that we see on TV. if they are studying film, its not incredibly hard to figure out signs and match them up to the pitch. Did they cheat? yes. was it sophisticated, intricate, incredibly intricate? naw.
@@dierodri88 True, it is not James Bond level. There is a general clear understanding in MLB that electronics are banned in the dugout to gain an advantage. Managers can not even wear an apple watch. So to have a set up with computers and logging of signs, that has a level of sophistication that other teams would not be ready to deploy. THey will cheat anyway they can, but using computers, tv screens in the dugout to gain an advantage. Not a good look
@@danielkim672 thanks for re-iterating my point. Not sure they had computers in the dug out as that would be overly obvious, but I'm sure computers were involved considering they moved the video room closer to the dugout. @@jeffreyholmes9607 -The difference between Costas, and so many is not only that he is smart as hell, but has always had a strong social conscience. He didn't look the other way on steroids and it hurt his career.
@@pohorex6834 That's impossible considering how instrumental guys like Clemens, big papi and many others were to those championship teams. I'm a mets fan so I also don't have anything of significance at stake. My whole point is that punishing the Astros so severely for something everyone has done is hypocritical. Its ok to steal signs using the naked eye but god forbid you use technology to do it. All MLB had to do was come up with a way to stop the bs and move on. This thing with Houston is overkill at its finest.
Now we find out how intricate it was. They had ekectrnic buzzers on their bodies they were being buzzed to tell them what pitch was coming. That's why they should be banned.
Bob Costas is 100% correct that cheating and stealing the signs is not only meant to unfairly help a batter hit a pitch (by knowing what's coming), but also about not swinging at a pitch. By knowing what's coming, the batter can lay off the pitch, in order to work the count to the batter's advantage (and adds more pressure on the opposing pitcher). But he left out another extremely important factor that unfairly helps. It helps the Astros' base runners. If the base runner also knows that a slower, off-speed pitch, away from the strike zone is coming (like in the dirt) - it means the catcher will will be slower to catch the ball, regain their balance, wind-up their arm, and throw the ball to his infielder. This means the base runner will have a much higher chance of stealing the base on those type of pitches (especially if they know its coming). The runner can take a bigger lead of the base, and take off immediately. Imagine a base runner easily stealing base to get into a scoring positions, or a double steal. This changes the dynamics of the at-bat, the inning, and the pressure on the opposing pitcher. This cheating has a big impact on the game.
Christopher Ball everyone in Houston saying that. That’s why the Mets fired him a week after being named manager. Think Fier the pitcher who started all this said Beltran came up with it. Either way, no respect for anyone on that squad. To say so & so wasn’t involved with it but u hear the banging with every single player at the plate. Mike Trout said he’d hit 80 home runs if he knew what pitch was coming.
Maybe. It's a different game. Always associated the Astros with a National League style of play. I know they put them in the American to get synergy with the Rangers. Still it takes some getting used to. The Colt 45s, the Astrodome, etc - all that has NL connotations.
Actually it begin after 2014 when they realize they could use the monitor in the dugout to spy on the catche's hand signal. The monitor was put in there beginning 2014 for the coaches to view the replays to see if they want to challenge the umpire's calls.
@@FTWinnick you not seen the tape on bregman and altuves chest? or the video of altuve rounding 3rd at game 6 ALCS 2019 and the words coming from his mouth "Don't rip off my jersey"?
This whole thing is just sad and scary based on some people's reactions. It is a big deal and it's offensive that anyone outside of Houston or Boston (or in those cities too for that matter) wants to just sweep this under the rug or just say "What's the big deal?". This is a huge deal. Cheating that is this systematic and this prolific needs to be dealt with HARSHLY. The penalties doled out were a slap on the wrist, I'm glad Hinch, Cora and Beltran were fired or "mutually agreed to part ways". This is so much worse than the steroid scandal, and yes, it is at the level of the Black Sox Scandal from 100 years ago. The problem with cheating is that it sets up so many hypotheticals because you cannot say with much confidence what would have happened in its absence. Would the Astros and/or Red Sox been good enough to beat the Yankees in the ALCS/ALDS without cheating? Would either have been good enough to beat the Dodgers in the WS without cheating? Who knows. All I can say with a lot of confidence is that a professional hitter gains a TREMENDOUS advantage by knowing what pitch is coming. And the whole team(s) were in on it? That's insane. Sure, the hitters still need to deal with the pitch speed and location but don't you think a football defense would gain a huge advantage if they knew if a run or pass play was coming? What if a team hacked an opposing team's OC's headset and mic and knew what type of play was coming, is that OK? They will not know exactly where the ball is going but holy crap what an advantage. If the Astros or Red Sox had any integrity they'd return the trophies. If MLB cared about credibility they'd strip both teams of their WS trophies. That's what cheating does, it creates a situation where stripping away achievements made through cheating the only viable option. If you're caught cheating in school, do you get to keep your "A"? No, you don't. It sucks for MLB, it sucks for those in the respective organizations who didn't know, and it sucks for the fans. People need to understand that cheating has collateral damage, not wanting to deal with collateral damage is not a viable excuse for not punishing cheaters appropriately. Upset or inconvenienced by the collateral damage? Blame the cheaters. Complacency is dangerous. I consider the 2016 Cubs the current WS defending champs. (I'm not a Cubs fan).
thespaceram2 Sacramento and Portland had them beat but Stern wanted the Lakers in the Finals so the league would make more money. That’s why Chris Webber hates talking about it, because he knows it was some bullshit.
Wish he had not brought up steroids. Who used - Barry Bonds has record for Home Runs, cheated. Who Didn't - Hank Aaron had record for Home Runs, didn't cheat Most glaring example I can think of Problem starts at the top.
Barry was the most tested player and he never failed or tested positive for any ilegal drugs. Yeah he gained weight and muscle.over year's of working out.as usual people believe in what they hear. I believe in result of evidence.
Bonds admitted to using steroids after his personal trainer allegedly misled him into believing he was taking flaxseed oil and arthritis cream. Sworn testimony lists 1998 as the earliest known offense. Still nothing is done about his tarnished record even though he was a hall a fame player without it. I disagree with Costas because something should be done about the cheaters in baseball. Their is a total double standard about pulling on the "thread" because they pulled the crap out of Pete Roses but they let everything else slide.
@Damian La quay your argument would make way more sense if you left the racism out of your rhetoric. owners give players that kind of money because the return on their investment is way way higher.

Once, my high school baseball manager thought another team figured out our activator signal, so we switched signals. They make phone apps that can figure out baseball signals, maybe instead of playing the blame game we should not keep the same signals for a 162 game season!
That's a solid idea. Let the pitcher gets signs over an earpiece/phone from the bench. If baseball has the catcher even put his glove on the inside or the outside of the plate, the batter is going to know where it's going. The catcher has to put his glove in the middle of the plate and can't do signs anymore. That simple, or it's over.
@@jackoff1826 Do you watch college baseball? The coach gives all the signals and the delays relaying the sign from the coach to the catcher to the pitcher is frustrating. Another way to do it is the pitcher can add or subtract with a glove wipe on the leg or jersey to add or take away from the sign given. I'm for less technology, not more. If it's wireless it can be intercepted.
@@slundgr take the coach out of it then. Give the catcher 5 seconds to speak the pitch to the pitcher. Keep the game moving. I'd agree that the time wasted between pitches is what takes baseball so long. And a lot of that it signaling the pitch. The game can be sped up a good deal to take away that time.
Grown men who aren't confident in their professional abilities, resort to blatant cheating to help them gain an unfair advantage. How embarrassing this has to be for them all. I'm embarrassed & I'm not on the team, lol
Like the man that provided arod with his ped’s said when they asked him how could he provide arod with them? He responded “a rod did it just to make sure he was on a level playing field!” “How does he not know if the pitcher is using or the infielders or outfielders!” Thats how bad it is!
Baseball can't let catchers do signs anymore. It has to send the signs over phone/earpierce to the pitcher from the bench. If the catcher even puts his glove on the inside or the outside of the plate, batters will know which side it will be on. The catcher has to put his glove down the middle. To prevent wild pitches, both the catcher and the pitcher have to be fed signs over phone/earpiece so that the catcher knows it's going to be a slider on the bottom outside corner. If baseball doesn't do this or something like it the sport is literally finished.

"..They devised this incredible, intricate system..." ...Banging on a trashcan
That's why they should be
banned.
And take away Ryan Braun's mvp cuz he cheated too. Kemp got robbed!! 😡
And Beltran came up with the idea. He’s gone.
Wait a minute, Barbie. I thought Cora was the mastermind.
my love songs nah, Beltran came up wit it & Cora helped

Christopher Ball everyone in Houston saying that. That’s why the Mets fired him a week after being named manager. Think Fier the pitcher who started all this said Beltran came up with it. Either way, no respect for anyone on that squad. To say so & so wasn’t involved with it but u hear the banging with every single player at the plate. Mike Trout said he’d hit 80 home runs if he knew what pitch was coming.
The astros’ cheating started when they moved to the american league
By losing 100 games a year
Maybe. It's a different game. Always associated the Astros with a National League style of play. I know they put them in the American to get synergy with the Rangers. Still it takes some getting used to. The Colt 45s, the Astrodome, etc - all that has NL connotations.
It started when Beltran developed the cheating scheme he learned from his previous team...
Actually it begin after 2014 when they realize they could use the monitor in the dugout to spy on the catche's hand signal. The monitor was put in there beginning 2014 for the coaches to view the replays to see if they want to challenge the umpire's calls.

The Lalas have cheated too with help from the NBA in the 2000 western conference finals and 2002 western conference finals.

Once, my high school baseball manager thought another team figured out our activator signal, so we switched signals. They make phone apps that can figure out baseball signals, maybe instead of playing the blame game we should not keep the same signals for a 162 game season!
Get rid of signs
“Mike up” the pitcher and catcher
Let the coach feed the signs
That's a solid idea. Let the pitcher gets signs over an earpiece/phone from the bench. If baseball has the catcher even put his glove on the inside or the outside of the plate, the batter is going to know where it's going. The catcher has to put his glove in the middle of the plate and can't do signs anymore. That simple, or it's over.
You think the game moves slow now, just wait until the coaches start giving all the signs to the catcher.
@@slundgr actually, if think it can speed up. No more signs. Let the talk/signal happen on the fly, no pause needed for signs.
@@jackoff1826 Do you watch college baseball? The coach gives all the signals and the delays relaying the sign from the coach to the catcher to the pitcher is frustrating. @@joeb2588 millions of dollars a year = lets cheat?
@@Sideler74 it's sarcasm.
