I have struggled with VOR, yet somehow passed quizzes I have taken. This video has now allowed me to understand VOR. Clear and concise information delivered in a simple way. We need more videos like this!
I don't know what happened to me, but I woke up one day and became obsessed with aviation. I used to see myself as a pilot when I was a child, but first I walked many other paths (including weather forecasting!) before re-discovering this passion at 35. I'm taking my fist discovery flight this Saturday and I have had butterflies in my stomach all week. After staring down the barrel of another 30 years in my current tech career, I'm quickly realizing I would rather fly a plane than a desk!
I have gone through the King's Flight School and this was one of the things that I couldn't grasp. I've spent the last week watching every VOR video I could find on UA-cam. All of them seemed to be skipping the basics and assuming you knew it. They seemed to start on step 4 and then skip to step 7 and it just didn't make sense. There were holes in all of their explanations. So none of the explanations made sense. I've probably watched 15-20 different videos and still didn't get it. However, you NAILED this explanation. Your taking it baby-step by baby-step really helped me finally grasp it. I'm going to watch your video several more times to fully grasp it but all the steps are there. You explained one tiny concept at a time, then added the next. My favorite part of the video was when you explained what quadrant the plane would be in and then added the next step of spinning it to meet the direction it was supposed to be pointed. Everyone else I've studied teaches that in one step. You broke it down to two steps. Brilliant! Thank you for not only knowing your material but understanding where the student is and bring the lesson down to our level. Feel free to reach out and I'd be more than happy to write you a review anywhere you'd like.
I have been searching the internet for hours trying to find a way to truly understand why the needle deflects the way it does. Your visuals are beyond helpful. THANK YOU. I appreciate the knowledge and am now subscribing :)
I finally get it! Your teaching style is remarkably like the Cuesta Professor, the Junior High School math teacher, whose videos make college algebra understandable. Bravo.
I’ve tried everything under the sun to help me understand VOR Nav for so long, but nothing made sense until I watched this. It clicked instantly. Great job!!
I have VOR training tomorrow on a flight with my instructor and this video helped me so very much, thank you kind sirrr ! Dropped a like and a sub, great video and that was a great explanation!
You know I was actually still struggling after the first half of the video, but wow the way you explained those 3 examples at the end just made it instantly click! Thank you!
I am very glad this was helpful! Most of my time in creating these videos is trying to find concise, yet simplified ways to describe the topics. I’m glad it worked in this case! Thank you for sharing your comment!
Thanks for the comment. I’m guessing you aren’t dumb. Not everyone learns the same way, and unfortunately, a single video won’t be able to meet everyone’s learning preferences. At least a couple of viewers noted that it took a couple of viewings of the video before VOR navigation started making sense. Another option might be to check out the Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge. The PHAK-can be downloaded free from the FAA. VOR navigation is explained starting on page 16-22. I hope this helps. I wish you the best of luck. Thanks, again for the comment!
I’m on this section in my FAA study now and the section after it is on GPS navigation, which started by saying that VORs are basically obsolescent and you’ll be using GPS for pretty much everything now.
Watched a ton of videos on this topic and still struggled interpreting VOR related questions. Your explanation along with the visuals really helped me understand were to place the aircraft in relation to the VOR indication. By far the best explanation in the topic!
I'm studying for my military license, and I have some difficulties in navigation. Thank your video now is all clear in my mind! Once you find the key, all this stuff is easier. Thank you so much! New subscriber.
Mr. Koon, or as I like to refer to you, Yoda! You have a real gift and are putting it to great use. Thanks for helping me get a seemingly ungetable concept. Please keep doing what you’re doing and God bless you! Terry
Wow! Thank you! For the past several weeks I have been taking advantage of the good weather we’ve been having at my local airport to teach from the airplane. However, I have three more videos in the works that I’m hoping will be completed shortly! Thanks, again for the huge compliment!
I love this! I’m at the very beginning of my flight training (at 65 yikes!). I’ll need to watch it a few more times to really “get it”. Thanks for your generosity!
Thank you! I hope you find my other videos helpful, too! Nothing wrong with 65. I did a BFR and IPC for an 80ish pilot earlier this year. He’s a great flier and brings a wealth of wisdom to the cockpit. Best of luck with your training!!
Hello! I found your video extremely helpful! Your explanation along with the visuals expanded my knowledge. Thanks for putting this video on the internet !!
Outstanding!!! was up for hours struggling with trying to read and understand VOR ... kept flunking every practice test question dealing with VOR ... yet you made this so incredibly easy to apply! just subbed!🎉

Uma das melhores explanações a respeito do assunto navegação por VOR, o qual confunde muitos pilotos iniciantes....ficou muito fácil de entender através dos seus exemplos....
This is the light moment for me. The part that says you got to turn in the direction of the radial was very important. A lot of videos don't explain this.
Thanks Scott, this video helped me a bit. I am currently studying for my private pilots, CBH and CLA tests. I'm having trouble applying what I've learned from the video to these questions though, I will watch your other vor vids
My first CFI basically told me not to worry about them. Now tha Im with a different one and hes actually directed me to study the ACS unlike the first, I have a week to learn how to proficiently use this thing before my checkride.
Wow. So very sorry to hear that. Your initial CFI didn’t do you any favors. You won’t need a week to learn how to use a VOR to Private Pilot standards. A few hours of flight and ground should do. It is easier in the airplane than it is on the written test. I wish you the best of luck. Have you seen my other VOR video. It might be helpful, too. Let me know how things go!
@@ScottKoonCFI I actually went and flew with my CFI today and he had me tracking and intercepting radials for about 45 mins on our flight. I think Ive got the hang of it, not that hard at all.
Watched every other video regarding VOR on UA-cam and just couldn’t relate them to the written questions. This one finally helped me understand thank you. Like/sub well earned. Vid saved for future reference 👍
Thanks for the compliment and the question! And, the question of Reverse Sensing is interesting especially for private pilot radio navigation. It becomes a little more real when working on your instrument rating and flying NDB approaches (if you can find one) or a Localizer Back Course. I’m thinking this might be easier to demonstrate in a video than describe. So, as a short answer, I’ll say that for private pilot level VOR navigation, what most folks define as “reverse sensing” (i.e. turning toward the needle takes them further off course) normally means they’ve set the ambiguity indicator (TO/FROM) incorrectly. I hope this helps and I’ll see if I can do some demonstrations in the near future. Thanks again for the question.
Fantastic video, thank you. Like many, I’ve watched countless videos in an attempt to grasp the principles of the dreaded VOR, and this video I believe, has helped immensely…particularly the end portion, where you spun the diagram to align with the VOR info….that nailed it for me. Thank you again.

Hi. Thanks for the great video! Is there ever a situation where the CDI needle is reverse sensing?
Thanks for the compliment and the question! And, the question of Reverse Sensing is interesting especially for private pilot radio navigation.
