- groundschoolacademy.com VOR Navigation is one of those things that is difficult to teach. In this video I've broken it down to manageable pieces to help you better understand VOR navigation

After watching a few VOR navigation videos on UA-cam, yours is the only one I understood. I am not a pilot yet but I am gaining a lot of knowledge before ground school. Thank you for your way of teaching.
Thanks for watching!
I wished I watched these videos years ago because it would have saved me a lot of instruction in the air with CFI's blaring instructions, ATC babbling in the background and the whirl of the engines. Thank you for your support of aviators who are learning.
Glad you like our videos! Have a great day!
Every day there is another thing to find in this treasure chest, which is your channel Jason. The enthusiasm and the quality of your videos are simply outstanding! One word: BRAVO
Thanks for the kind words, Alexander!
Jason is a gifted speaker. Relates his points across as no-one else can. I enjoy listening to him SO much.
Great instructions, Jason. I´m from Brazil and I´m not a pilot, yet. But now, I can learn more and practice VOR procedures inside X-Plane flight sim. Many thanks!
I'm studying for my written test and I was having a lot of issues with understanding and using VOR and this helped a lot. Thanks!
Awesome! Thank you. Found your page today. I will be getting my sport license this spring. Your channel has already taught me so much already. Ground school doesn't seem so scary now
Thank you for taking the time to make content or in this case, share content with students not taking part in your ground school. This is a extremely helpful video. I appreciate it !
I am a new member of the school and. The reason i joined is because i liked a lot the videos i saw in UTUBE. And I have to say, the videos that are posted in utube , yes it showes the school is great, but to be honest, I think the actual classes are a thousand times better. Is incredible the suppport you get from the school , the you ask them a question and in less than nothing you get an answer. Honestly, the best online school ever!!!!!!!
Thank you very much Jason, helped me alot. I have to comment its a shame posters seem compelled to interject insults, when your doing to me a great job. Small minded people, in my opinin. Ron
Very nice demo. People like yourself are what keeps guys like me interested in the Aviation field.
Vor traing was the hardest for me to understand. I am days away from taking my check ride and I believe I will take your ground school training. Thanks alot
Thanks Jason! I very much appreciate all of the "free" teaching that you have already given to me through your videos! At some point I will be ready to sign up and get serious. Have a great day today!
This is the best video for VOR interception and tracking it has made it a piece for f cake for me
NONE of the videos on UA-cam I have seen explained this as well as you did. Thank you very much for this, it definitely helped me understand the concept fully.
Always a great help. I am a ppl with about 200 hours in my beloved 150F and yes comprehending VOR use has been challenging, actually an underused option when flying ( I use my Garmin 430 and my Nexus Garmin GPS, overkill I know...thanks, your video was extremely helpful!
Hi Jason, I'm watching you from half way across the world and want to thank you for all your advice and fantastic videos, they are all so helpful! Please keep uploading! very appreciated!
When the examiner asked me to dial in a VOR and fly to it, I did so without comparing each Morse Code character with the sectional. On the ground, the examiner criticized me for not verifying the VOR. I told him that I DID verify the VOR. I told him that I'm an amateur radio operator and I know Morse Code. He smiled. In retrospect, I should have repeated the letters I was hearing out loud, but it was so natural to me to be reading the code that I didn't think of it. So, if you know Morse Code and don't need to compare the dits and dahs with the sectional to verify a VOR, say something. As an aside, one of my pleasures was flying to smaller towns using their local AM broadcast station as an NDB and using a technique taught to me by a lady instructor who once ferried aircraft in WWII that allowed me to track straight to an NDB in a crosswind. I wonder if really practical techniques like that are taught in this online ground school class.
Would love to fly and learn with someone like you!
Danm I want to memorize Morse code now!!!
Learning Morse Code is pretty easy. However, some people fear it for reasons I can't understand. If I were teaching it, I would start out with a dit. That's an E. Then di-dit (two dits), that's an I (eye), then di-di-dit. That's an S. Have someone send a mix of those three letters for a few minutes and you'll reach a point where you just know each character and you don't have to think about it. A dah (dash) is a T. Da-dah is an M. Da-da-dah, is O (oh). Now, you know how to send S-O-S, don't you? I once had a Cub Scout troop over to show them amateur radio. My daughter, who was about 12 at the time, was watching me demo Morse Code. After the demo, I had to run an errand. When I came back about two hours later, Deanna, my daughter, could send any letter of the alphabet in Morse Code! Slowly, but she did it. One final easy lesson: Numbers are sent is a pattern of five characters. 'One' is one dit followed by four dah's. 'Two' is two dit's followed by three dah's. Get it? 'Five' is five dit's. Six through Zero reverses the pattern; 6 is one dah followed by four dit's. 7 is two dah's followed by three dit's. You get it. What's zero? Yeah, you got it.

Di-di-dah-dit-dah Dit-da-dah di-di-di-dit dit-dah dah / di-di-di-dit dit-dah dah di-di-di-dit / da-dah-dit da-da-dah dah-di-dit / dit-da-dah dit-dah-dit da-da-dah di-dit-dah da-dah-dit di-di-di-dit dah
@@lyingcat9022 No clue as to di-di-dah-di-dah unless you mean a Clear/Begin but that's usually signified by di-di-di-dah repeated three times. Then 'What / hath / god / wrouq. Then you should have added di-di-dah-dah-di-dit (the 't' in 'dit' is only added to a 'di' at the end). Don, KK5DON.
Very nice. Agree with some of the comments below regarding terminology. Radials "radiate" outward. The 090 radial starts on the East side of the station and "radiates" outward. You can say, "Intercept the 090 radial and track inbound." But you cant do that if you are anywhere on the West side of the station. The verbiage should be, "Intercept the 270 radial and track inbound." Or...."Intercept the 090 course and track inbound."
Thank you thank you thank you. I was so confused. 🤦🏻♂️
@@williamgreen4103 you bet!
Very good video and a great way to supplement what you may have learned from a lecture in the classroom. Watching it happen and listening to the explanation as the airplane and the needle moves are GREAT learning tools!
Best VOR instructional and explanation ever. Hands down.
Came across your video on UA-cam this is great. I am going back to flying after so many years and I will definitely sign up. Thanks for the amazing lessons.
Thank you Jason and everyone at MzeroA, I've watched numerous videos trying to explain VOR Nav and this one has helped me the most.
Thanks for the video. I was doing my flight review today after 10 years of inactivity. I can fly a plane just as good as I ever could, but I had completely forgotten VOR navigation. I think I'll be ready to finish my flight review after watching your video.
You should get an award for this video...so helpful its crazy
Jason, thank you for sharing this video! I finally understood how to read the OBS. I really enjoy and learn a lot from your work. Thank you again.
Jason, you don't strike me as the swearing type, but you F'n rock at breaking things down and taking us through them step-by-step.
Keep it up man, I love learning things the way that you teach them.
Thank you so much!
Hi Jason: This was very helpful. I am new to flying (20 hours of instruction). It was so good that when I get a little further along I will join your gold program so that I can prepare for my licence....thanks and this was a great marking idea. I am learning in Santa Monica CA at Justice Aviation.
This actually helped me so much! Wow, never been able to understand VORs/Radials until watching this video. Feeling a bit better about taking my PAR exam this coming week.
That was an awesome training scenario. Thanks, VOR has always been a little confusing, you make it look so easy.
thank you for posting and keeping up these videos. they have been and continue to be a superb help during training.
I’ve seen the KingSchool version and this and I gotta say, for my brain putting it together as the CDI needle being the “highway” that you merge on has significantly helped how I understand VOR indications. Thank you!
Glad we could help, thanks for watching!
Jason, you have a good method of explaining not only how but why. Still learning and looking for a good instructor. Thanks, Moye.
I am an instrument pilot getting pretty darn close to my commercial checkride and I still benefited from this video...Thanks for posting!
Thanks a lot Jason, I fly helicopters and this single video helped out a ton. Great explanation man!
Great tutorial Jason, you made the intercept puzzle now clear for me. Cheers!
That simulator helped tremendously! Thank you for the knowledge, This is going to help my practice tremendously. Great video as well, simple and too the point while packed with knowledge!
So happy it helped in your journey. Thanks for watching.
i have watched a few of these videos, and this is by far the most informative. cheers.
People are being really critical of this video, but I really enjoyed it. It helped me get a good basic understanding of VOR. Thanks for the helpful video!
Man, young pup Jason. I remember when this vintage gold first came out.
Very helpful video! I just had my first NAV Radio lesson and was totally confused about intercepting. Your video just made it all clear. Thank you very much!!! Liked and subscribed :)
I thought you explained this confusing subject very well. Thanks for posting your videos, I have found them to be very helpful. I'm a 50 hour student and just about ready for a checkride.
I have to say...that was amazing.....as soon as i get the money, I will definetly sign up
Thank you for the video. VOR is definitely the most frustrating to understand, but you make it funny and interesting man.
Good instructional video! You helped me to refresh my in flight technique on holding patterns, thank you. I don‘t know who would give you a thumb down, but to me it is two thumbs up ^^
Thank you On line ground school academy training for student Pilots and the Pilots who have the flying experience, I believe its a great method for a Pilot to learn and correct the mistakes that we made in our days of flying the Aircraft not fitted with VOR Though I am retired guy from flying with Good experience in Glider flying Training and fixed wing Aircraft flying as well. but I do enjoy by going through and understand more about these Birds up and above us

your videos are extremely helpful. very simple but very informative. thanks for posting!
This video is SUPER helpful! Thanks for posting!
*very helpful "find out where you are first" solid advice ahh :) taking my written in 1 week! excited!!*
HELLO JASON THANK YOU FOR THE HELPFUL INFORMATION . IT WAS GREAT.PLEASE CONTINUE TO SHARE YOUR KNOWLEDGE.
Great video.... I understand VOR so much more than what I used to! Thanks
I don't care what others think, I now have the knowledge of VOR basics that I didn't get from others.
Awesome Jason. Love the instruction.
7 years on - still a spot on lesson!
This is the best video that explains about vor , thank you
Hi - I'm a Liberty student working on commercial lis - enjoyed your video - very nice job in explaining a fairly complex item. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful for you! Keep us updated with how your training is going!
This video was extremely helpful in understanding VOR in a 3-dimensional 360 degree model. THANK YOU for your excellent description and clarification.
Glad it was helpful!
thank you Jason this helps a lot i am int the last three chapters of my ground school book where im learning navigation and charts and longitude latitude and minutes. this helps a tremendous amount
Wow. Had to watch it couple times.. not a real student yet but diving into the theory... that takes a little to sink in
Thank you for this it really helped me to understand VOR!!
The clearest VOR tutorial I have ever come across! Well done.
Well this worked as a VOR primer for me as a flight simmer. I was able to fly east of KSAN and move between three different VOR stations. I'm just about to try a specific radial intercept as per the example.
Thanks. Thought this was a good video. I agree the top view with the instruments view is very good for understanding the geometry. Might consider limiting discussion about bearing vs. course (i.e. bearing is always the radial and course determines the TO/FROM)
Very entertaining and educational. Nice to have someone talk about a subject in a non monotone voice and get to the point. Keep up the good work.
Jason, you are remarkable and I appreciate the video. I have a good friend Richard Seghieri who is about one month away from CFII and he recommended you; the funny thing was I had already found you. I would like to sign up but I a not sure exactly how the system works (because I have a time frame issue). 4 year old child, work and driving five hours to and from Sac from Humboldt. Needless to say and for a lack of words, your'e the bomb buddy! Thanks to you I learned something knew in a short amount of time and in plain 21st century verbiage.--Adam--
Absolutely brilliant tutorial
Couldn’t be clearer
Well done
Eliermurillo: I'm a student at L3 in Sandford your awesome dude at what you do thanks for doing this videos
Jason these videos are excellent.
Браво!. Я все понял. Спасибо!
Bravo !. I got it. Thank you!
Great presentation! Made something difficult to understand much easier. Thank you.
Excellent! Thank you for watching!
helped understand VORs a lot better, thanks!
That was the easiest presentation to understand I have seen. I plan to check out your website.
Kudos to luizmonteiro.com. The VOR simulator is one the of many online navigation simulators offered on luizmonteiro.com aviation education. I've been using the Windows-based navigation simulator for several years.
thank you, this is very helpfull with the simulation and explanations.
In the beginning i didnt get it at all, but nearing the end it clicked and I understood all :)
Thanks!
Really great explanation for VOR, keep up this good job
Well done presentation, I got some things straight now!
I really liked it. It was very informative. I have never seen it done that way. I’m an older student pilot. Thank you. I will check out your on line school
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching!
Wow, you really make intricate things much simpler. Genius!
Glad you think so! Thanks for watching!
Excellent Lesson! Keep up the good work.
Excellent you clear my concept in very awsome visual way these kind a visual clips makes life easy
thanks you
THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!! Thanks to this video now i know how it works ! I repeat, thank you !!!
MzeroA Thank you so much, for your lessons..specially for this VOR Navigation...
Keep them coming Jason.
Thank you so much from South Korea!
excellent!! Very Clear and I think I got it. Thank you Jason.
Thank you! Great video and clear explanation!
Very Nice Tutorial.....thanks a lot!!
Explanation was pretty good
It helped a lot! Now I just have to practice! Thanks!
I left MZeroA sometime ago, and I have solid reasons. However, Jason you cracked this one so well, thanks for sharing your knowledge. This is great!
Great tutorial MzeroA Flight Training...which software are you using to demonstrate?
Dictionary definition of a Radii (origin of Radial): "A straight line extending from the centre of a circle." in the case of a VOR it has 360 radii.
It would be clearer to use bearing to and radial from. If you're on a 050 bearing TO a VOR, you are located on the 230 radial FROM the VOR. This provides clarity in definition, the same way you only use the word "takeoff" if its in a "takeoff clearance" otherwise its departure. If you say you're on the 050 radial "but is it to or from" you are increasing the potential for error by 50%, this may be why such a high % of students make errors on this during check rides.
In this example; you are located on a 050 BEARING to the VOR on a heading of 070. What heading do you require to intercept the 090 RADIAL? And where are you in relation to the VOR? Answer: 050 bearing TO must be 230 Radial FROM..., you can only be SW of the VOR.
Do not use the definition TO and FROM in relation to your VOR positioning, only use it in reference to your aircraft instrumentation.
06:20 It's not a 050 degree radial to the station. You are flying the 230 radial inbound, which happens to be a 050 degree magnetic course.... but it's not the 050 degree radial... it's the 230 radial TO the station. You are still on the 230 degree radial. It doesn't care what direction your are flying. So the takeaway is in order to fly the 230 degree radial TO the station, just dial your OBS with 230 on the BOTTOM with a TO indication, which means 050 will be on top. Inbound = (230 degree Radial on the) Bottom =TO indication. You are making this more difficult than it actually is.... This is a great VOR learning tool tho! Thanks for sharing.
Just started with VOR and this really helped thanks
Glad to hear it!
nice video, you have one about dme arc?
Very clear explanation!
It cannot get easier than this.-
amazing, this is the best VOR video I've seen. Appreciate it!
Glad it helped! Thanks for watching!
I am late, but here I have been tinkering with some old classic planes in the simulator where GPS isn't there for navigation and you are left with VOR only.
However I have never been able to grasp the concept of this until this video came along.
thnx for the vid. how did you know to enter the 230 bearing for the "where are you now calculation. Also, how did you know which direction is north on the chart?
Thanks!!
You really made it simple!
Dude! You are amazing... Now I understand how it works! Thank you so much.
What a load of crap.
+Byron Elvey You've already put your constructive criticism. If you hate the video why waste time trolling it. I would love to see your tutorial on the subject. You should create a tutorial for us.
